I hope their storefront was a little more secure. Lots of people leave their credit card info on that site. /images/graemlins/sweat000.gif

I wonder how long until it's fixed. I guess this ends the sale as well as calls into question any storage of personal information on their website. Makes me glad I've never ordered from them.

Hah! Yee of too much faith

This is the home of the ADV slasher, negative customer service, and the webstore where you can choose your own price for each product just by changing the URL that your browser sends when you add an item to your basket.

The only surprise is that it took so long before they were publicly hacked by the script kiddies. Chances are they were professionally hacked long ago and every customer's info has already been compromised for months - just ADV was too incomptent to notice, or too anti-customer to warn anyone.

That's why I always use single-use credit card numbers like MBNA's shopsafe when I buy online, let them steal my credit card#, they can't do a damn thing with it and I don't have to place any trust in the competence or integrity of a website.

For some reason this really doesn't surprise me in the least. I guess there securities as lousy as their infamous customer service. This is just another reason I'm happy i decided to never order from them and avoid their sales like the plague.

Someone over at the ANN message boards posted some info (http://animenewsnetwork.com/bbs/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=24070) on the hacker group responsible:

[ QUOTE ]
The Ayyildiz group (one A, two Ys) is Turkish, not Persian.

They hack pages to put up a propaganda message claiming that the Armenian genocide never happened, and that Kurds are the biggest terrorists on the planet.

[/ QUOTE ]

Apparently the group randomly attacks sites that have a particular security flaw.

No, that would be DLW's password. Which maybe is how the site got hacked... nwell known initials with a well known mentality. /images/graemlins/wink.gif /images/graemlins/happy.gif

According to what was posted on the ANN fora, it seemed that only the front page of ADV's main website along with their sister sites were hacked. The flaw must have occured in the "index" files apparently. All of their sub-pages were still intact, including their sales section and press releases. Only the main homepage was defaced by these hackers.

I just read through some of the posts over there. One guy was worried... about losing ORDERS... So the site gets hacked, he's given ADV his credit card info and he's more concerned with what he ORDERED and not his credit card security? Either he's a hardcore fan and doesn't think of anything but Anime, he has the single use credit card thing or he hasn't thought it through.

BTW, I don't think ADV stores CC info on their site. Not in terms of, I log in and it remembers my credit card number. So I don't think it is quite the same as what happened to say, DVD Pacific. Of course, they have to store the info SOMEWHERE to process your orders, let us just hope the server isn't connected to the external network.

I would put money on the main web server holding a log file of every order ever placed and all the billing details.

I would also put money on ADV not even knowing such a file exists on their system.

Personally since the system INSTANTLY does the charge, I would figure that the only file that needs this information stores is the credit card batch file - in which often is stored on another system or just not even stored.

Thank god, I have never ordered from ADV Films and order from stores like Right Stuf or Robert's Anime Corner Store. This disappoints me and tells me they need a e-commerce staff as part of their team, badly.

Woah, you can do that? Interesting....

I really hope they don't have cc information stored since Dad has ordered from there, but if someone uses his card far enough from our area; the bank will say "wtf?! that can't be right!" and block the charges, I believe. I don't know if that applies to websites though.

Quick update: I just visited ADV's website and currently they are displaying their company logo with the message "We're making revisions - please check back", so you can access the site but at this time cannot advance any futher. So hopefully everything will be running normally within the next 24-48 hours or so.

I'm not sure if this is trolling or not. They seem to be pretty nice, average maybe, but not junk. I've seen lesser cels sell for more. The only thing that seems to be priced a bit too high over market value are the Sin and Wild Arms cels, the rest seem to have sold pretty well.

ANN has a post-mortem (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/article.php?id=8840) on the hacking incident:

[ QUOTE ]
ADV removed the hacked server on Saturday morning, no more than a few hours after the original hack itself. Their website resumed regular operation on Sunday evening. According to Mark Williams, CTO at ADV, they took advantage of the downtime to implement several already prepared expansions, including the addition of new servers. The reparations took longer than Williams would have liked as it was the weekend and several staff we're out of town for the weekend. "Plus," adds Williams, "We liked the Turkish terrorist music."

Williams states that the vulnerability that lead to this attack has been corrected and that the only server affected was a front end content-caching server, no customer data was affected in any way.

[/ QUOTE ]

Yeah, I read that earlier today. It's certainly fortunate that the customer data wasn't effected and that it only defaced the front page of the site. Also good that it took them less than 48 hours to get things right again.

Except (it seems) for the "Check out" portion of their shopping cart—I can't get it to work. Yesterday I kept getting the error message that (approximately) my connection had been terminated prematurely. Within the last hour it changed to one stating that the security certificate was mismatched: www.advfilms.com (http://www.advfilms.com) (certificate) versus www25.advfilms.com (actual server). When I accept the certificate, the destination page is not found. :-( Is anyone else having this problem?
