View Full Version : A poll on anime merchandise
I was going to put this in the R1 forum, but I figured it would be more at home here, as it didn't pertain directly to just the R1 market. A large majority of us spend a bulk of our anime budget on DVD's. I myself do, and rarely buy other merchandise. But I know others in the R2 forum do, and we see constant figures and other things come out. I remember reading that most shows(in Japan), make their money off of merchandise. So I figured that I would make a poll about it.

DVDs and CDs (OSTs) by far and than some books I generally don't buy anything other than those types since I'm not a collector and I don't need more things that have no use taking up space.

Same here. I mean I'll pick up a figure, manga, or book now and then, but the bulk of my money goes towards DVD's.

Absolutley DVD's. Manga happens to be a really close second. Also, I only have 2 cds and I can't find a place to buy figures.

DVDs and CDs. I think this is going to win by far.
Next most is manga, then figures. I don't really buy much of other anime merchandise. Most anime related video games aren't so great.

That's true *remember DBZ Sagas*. There are a few decent ones at least but not many unfortunately.

Since I held off on the R1 DVDs, I've had some available income to support the R2 figure habit. Still limited on the R2 DVDs though.

I'd say DVDs and CDs. Since that's mostly what I get. Well for CDs it mainly means Anime Music CDs to be exactl. Been awhile since I've gotten any CDs though.

Most of my money goes toward those little round disk thingies, but I can't discount the manga/artbooks/doujinshi either. And shitajiki, well... that doesn't cost a lot, but I like getting them. It's also slowly approaching $1000 spent on that... gah!

I just had to answer this.. as I've noticed a while back that my collecting habits have changed through my fandom years. I answered Figures, since I've really gotten in to them lately, but I'm cutting back on it a bit, as I've seen what happens in my collecting cycle.
When I was a younger anime fan I was all about buying VHS since anime was still young around that time and I was just getting in to it, which when I found anime posters I just loved them, so I began buying posters. But VHS/DVDs still reigned the budget. Then came artbooks and some t-shirts. Yet still I spent more on the DVD side. I look back now and realize that I wanted to get the posters and tees not just because I liked them, but because I wanted to show off that I was a fan of anime and that certain show. Artbooks made more sense as I am an artist and studied animation so they were entertaining reference. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif But I've slowed/stopped buying them right now.
Now I bought a few manga earlier on(during the beginning stage), but there wasn't much out there.. I subscribed to Mixxzine when it came out, and once the manga boom began I found myself buying more manga then DVDs. Price was "better" as I could get 2 manga over 1 dvd, and there were more titles that appealed to me.
But I've found both of these "on hold" due to me finding figures that I "just gotta have" /images/graemlins/tongue.gif This is basically because I can put off buying manga and anime for later where as the figures are more limited in release.
So I think beginning fans like to buy merchandise to show others I like this stuff!! And after a while that slows down and they get where they don't need to show it off so much. The other side of it is just what phase you're in, I'm in my figure phase. Where I just enjoy the figures a lot. In the old days I may just buy a figure because at the time I liked it, but now I look at it and question how much I'll enjoy it later.
But now that I have a job YAY! I hope I can begin to even out the spending.. figures will probably still be a priority (depending on how much I like them) but getting dvds and manga again will be great! They never really dropped off, just slowed down a lot.

DVDs are the only anime-related thing I buy.... well not including my newtype-usa subscription. I'd like to buy more trinkets and whatnot, but I never find any that pertain to the series I like.

I chose DVDs and CDs but it's just DVDs. Besides that, some manga. I have no need for anything else anime related.

Almost all of my money goes towards DVD's as far as anime goes. I have spent money on some manga, wall scrolls, and other trinkets, but that is almost negligible in comparison.
I spend most of by anime related purchases on DVD's. Though I may get the odd manga title that I'm interested in.

I'm a mecha fan so I'm always buying those expensive, well engineered toys that the Japanese companies just seem to love.
Still manage to spend more on dvd's though as the toy buying is never as consistent.

Figures (un)fortunately for me. DVDs come to a close 2nd with manga and CDs being dead last.
Manga and books. Most of my budget goes towards books in general, so this wins. I've almost stopped buying DVD's.

The majority of what I buy is DVDs, with a few CDs and manga.
I have no use/desire for figures or trinkets.

The vast majority of my money is spent on dvds and I don't imagine that changing any time soon. I've purchased a little bit of everything else in the past, including music cds, figurines, wall scrolls, etc. but since I'm currently not rich, I really can't concentrate too much on that stuff right now as much as I want to.

For me DVD's are where most of my dollars go, with CD's second, and manga a distant third. Besides that, I've picked up a few wallscrolls and not much else.

DVDs, with figures in second place. It used to be artbooks in second, but I've been collecting fewer artbooks and buying more figures.

Most of my anime money these days goes toward doujinshi and manga. It's cheaper and easier for me right now.

It's mainly towards DVDs. I'd go for more CDs but I can never find anyone to talk to about what's good and what's not. Manga (R1) I buy on occasion, and Figures and Artbooks I buy every once in a TYPE moon. Sorry, I just had to say that. /images/graemlins/tongue.gif
The other lot of my luxury budget is towards games mostly, gamer games anyway.

Nowadays i spend most of my discretionary income on DVD and OST CDs as well....
but i did pick up a few things outside that area over the years, and i havent ruled out going back to that
Sailor Moon wands > SM, SMR, SMS, SMSuperS, and Stars, plus ChibiMoon's S wand
CCS figurines in two sizes and SM gashpion (sp?) figurines...
An Eternal Sailor Moon alarm clock, SM playing cards, cards and some of the inserts from the original Pioneer releases of Tenchi Muyo
and the part of my collection that amuses my current ladyfriend most, a small collection of Sailor Moon dolls (including the hard-to-find doll of Sailor Sat-chan which i 'stole' for $14.00 a few years back...she had never been out of the box!...plus a set of Sailormoon World Outer Senshi (Uranus, Neptune, Pluto and Saturn) that a freidn sent me from Japan a few years ago...
Dont know if i would ever go quite THAT far again...but one never knows...

Anime-related games. I would personally count this as games that were made AFTER an anime came out. So I wouldn't count things like Final Fantasy, Xenosaga, or Wild Arms, but I would count (if I had them) Dragonball Z, Naruto, etc.

"DVD's!!"
It's actually a running joke among my friends, co-workers and family members. I'll show up to a gathering or whatever, and if I don't mention anything related to my collection, someone else surely will. /images/graemlins/sweat000.gif /images/graemlins/tongue.gif
After that, manga, CD's, figures and art books, in that order.

You're going to love this answer: Depends on the season. That being said, I voted for DVDs/CDs. In the winter I buy and watch more DVDs because I am home more; in the summer I buy and read more manga because it's more portable. I just ordered 28 manga volumes in the Del Rey sale at Right Stuf and will probably pick up a few random volumes at Borders this summer but probably will only buy a half dozen DVDs all summer. Next fall I'll jump on the few DVD studio sales that come up to stock up for the winter watching season. Overall, though, I have more DVDs and they generally cost more than any of the others that I do buy. I don't join in any of the collectibles other than what comes with limited edition DVDs because the shows themselves cost enough to begin with and isn't that the entire reason for anime anyway?
Heh, I get what you mean. With Rightstuf and other places I'll jump on the studios sales and buy things that I normally wouldn't buy.

Books, right now.
I've been going through a huge artbook phase. With domestic manga purchases added to the import artbook/doujinshi buys, the overall expenditure goes even higher.

Most of it, DVD's, then manga, then action figures.
