...that sounds like my current problem, buying cels for shows I haven't seen. My "other" section will be expanding greatly in the coming weeks.

I went after a cel of Cutey Honey that wasn't even bid on the previous week only to get sniped. I'm thinking it's a bad idea to let the timer run out, only to bid when it comes right back up again. /images/graemlins/wink.gif

Not yet I have Dragon Pink and Wild ARMS and hope to look for the scenes tonight after Mother Day Dinner. The Wild ARMS cell I think might be form the opening credits where there is a far shot that closes in to a close-up .
For Draron Pink I might have to watch the whole thing to make sure I can find the cell, maybe several times.
I do not have Magical Twilight, yet, but I remember Liv only showed up in the first episole. if the background goes with the cell then the cell might be from right before Tsukasa's freind knock out Liv ties her up and do her, making her a dolice submissive.

Well, I went down in flames over the night. I can't say I've gone 0/5 before on YJ. I also got out bid for the first time by another SMJ user.

I guess I will have to be waking up at 5am on Sunday from now on... /images/graemlins/stunned0.gif

I lost on an Ifurita cel, a Spaurh/Lafiel combo and to my amazement, 3 City Hunter cels as well (to 3 different people on these no less!).

I guess it wasn't my night, but as my sempai once told me, if you aren't there for the auction when it closes, expect to lose.

On the bright side, it frees up some more bidding power. /images/graemlins/happy.gif

sorry you lost all the auctions. i saw that crest combo and almost went for it myself (i liked the lafiel cel) but passed as there was a diff cel i really wanted and figured it would cost me a bit. ^-^

I have been thinking of framing some of my cels of late. I have become concerned after reading some threads about this, not so much about framing damage, but line fading from light.

When they are saying things like "I don't want to put the cel in the frame due to exposing it to light." or "I framed them but put them facing the wall." it makes me wonder whether taping them to the wall was the best idea.

If they are so concerned about them fading in the light when they are inside glass, I'm afraid to think what is happening to my cels that are in bags only. Do bags provide better protection than glass? Is reflected sunlight light off walls a bad thing? I also have energy saving Fluorescent lights in the room.

At least I took down the cels that were being exposed to the sun as the summer months come around.

I had about 20 cels on the wall, but only have 7 up right now. The rest are in portfolios (finally).

Thanks for any tips. With all the money I'm parting with, I want to make sure these stick around for a few years!

Cels all suffer from line fading from light. Best way to store them is in cool dark places in cel folders.
That said, some Hankens etc should be fine as the black lining is drawn or printed onto the cel rather than photocopied.
If you are intent on displaying them, framing with UV resistant glass (or Museum quality archival glass) is probably your best bet. I have framed a few of my larger ones. Flourescent light with higher UV emissions are bad - not so good for cels.
Archival glass and framing or no, I would keep the cels out of ANY direct sunlight (my framed cels are displayed in a corridor with mininal sun) or near a light source which is on all the time.

Photocopied... that explains a lot about line fade. I didn't know that was the normal process. So they did a sketch, copy it onto the plastic and then paint it? Line fade always seems to be the big issue rather than the paint itself fading.

Maybe I should frame the best of them and put the rest into the portfolios. I found some frames, but they are too small unless I cut the cel itself... no way I'm doing that. I need to find a good art supply store around here.

Well, I think I will have a backlog, but it will consist of mostly junk/set cels. I got a 5 set on one, that has 3 junk cels. I'm not sure what I will do with those. I guess I just have to keep ordering until I can't possibly scan all these. Did I ever forget how long it takes or what... to think it's only been a month and a half. I would probably get more site visits if I held some back.

i think of all the p9 characters izumi is probably the best (or tied for the best) character design. her image is awesome. as a character she's definately not my favorite, but i love cels of her because her design is one of my favs ^-^ and her look/emotions varies.

I like that one... very nice. Now I remember that I didn't like Izumi as much after she cut her hair. I just didn't like the 2nd style.

Well, it looks like the dreaded scan/stitch wasn't so bad. I won't claim it's up to Gabriel's standards, but it should do the job. /images/graemlins/wink.gif

You can change it so it doesn't scale the images if you want. Thats how I have mine set up.

I am beginning to understand the meaning of a pan cel's dimensions. The measurement on that one approaches a frightening size. Wait, how big was that old Tenchi hanken... 500 x 390. Ok, that one was truly a monster. /images/graemlins/stunned0.gif

The size is in millimeters. They aren't THAT big, but are a challenge to scan. To see why, I have included a little comparison image:

That was mostly a joke. /images/graemlins/wink.gif Pans that are just one row of scans are pretty easy - aside from the extra scan time it takes usually under 5 minutes to join them acceptably.

However, the cels that are too large for the scanner bed in both height and width are a major pain. I reserve the right to get cranky after doing one of those!

I went after another City Hunter cel last night, but like a fool, I was up until 2:30am playing a computer game, so I wasn't there for the 4:30am close. I placed a much higher bid this time, but I get the feeling it could do more harm than good in the long run. Someone always has more money to spend if you give them enough time, and if they know about it...

I forgot how last minute it was (I can't see the bid history now), but yeah someone did. It was still at 3k when I went to bed, but I knew it wouldn't stay there. I'd rather fight these things in person than take guesses before-hand, but I do need some sleep. /images/graemlins/wink.gif

The good CotS run over there has ended, at least for now. Well, maybe I shouldn't say "good" yet. The auctions I won are aging to the point to make me nervous (12 days). Actually, I'm on vacation myself! However, since I can see the need for updates, I am always willing to oblige, since I have a neverending backlog.

Somehow, I managed to scan 4 cels in just over an hour, with sketches too! I was stunned by how many came in, so I needed to get going right away before giving in to the backlog. /images/graemlins/wink.gif

I picked up a new scanner last night... this thing is fast.

It's too bad I didn't find any with a wider bed, but hey, it's "fun" to do multiple scans, right? /images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I'm pretty sure that's from their first meeting. Jinnai thinks the staff is a control device and doesn't yet grasp that she needs it - so he's reluctant to give it up. He's such a fun character that it's a shame he was so "dumbed down" for the TV series.

Yeah, Moby Dick has caught my eye. I can't believe that one was uncontested. I have another one coming, which I was only able to avoid a sniping on in the last minute, so it must be getting more popular.

also love the sarah cel. it's beautiful. heck all of those shamanic princess cels are great. is that tiara closeup (hearts) from ebay? i saw it and ended up not being able to bid (got distracted. hehe) and was wondering who won it so i could go see a nice gallery scan. if it was you yay, it's gorgeous. and if not, well it's close enough that i don't notice ^-^

Wish that was the case. I have some fierce competition with a few other collectors in this series. The nice parts is that I have met most of them personally over the years, so it is kind of a friendly competition.

I set all my images today at the width of 500 and finished out my CotS section. (all except for my Seelnay pan cel which I will rescan when I pull out my oversized cel folder) When I get to my Shamanic Princess folder, I'll resize all ones I posted above to 500 too. If you want to do it in real life and not just in your online galery, you'll want to print the image out on a high quality color laser printer. The regular paper it uses is fine, but you will want to attach it to some cardstock for strength - or use a slightly thicker kind of paper. Don't use an inkjet - those backgrounds tend to look grainy, especially when scanned.

For display purposes you will want to put a sheet of clear plastic between the background and the cel. Cels stick to lasercopy backgrounds extremely easily - even worse than they do to sketches. Easiest way is to cut up a cel bag and use that.

This is a great update! I love the Ifurita reference on the one cel. It reminds me of a few cels over a 2 week span. That was crazy. It's been a bit quiet of late by comparison... but maybe no one has any money left. /images/graemlins/wink.gif

As for the moisture problem, I think I've seen the same thing on a few of my cels. It only happens on the ones with multiple layers, but can be really hard to fix, depending on how they are stuck together.

Both the ones we have and the ones we should be looking for... such as Miz. I'm re-discovering that the ones I've seen on YJ don't do her justice. I wonder which show the current offerings are from.

I decided to get going on the main cel of my latest update. I was going to save this until the rest were put up, but since I put all the time into getting the scans worked together, I put it up now.

This was a wishlist cel from the moment I saw it. I had passed on a similar one earlier that quickly exceeded my limit, but somehow this one stayed more "reasonable."

The mouth layer is separate. Unfortunately, there was quite a bit of trapped moisture as a result, but I carefully separated the layers to get it out.

It even has a sketch, but they got a little lazy...

I think I did ok on the scans. I figured out a new way to merge them together that helped (a lot!), but part of it was done the old way.

Surprised Girl (http://falcon.rubberslug.com/gallery/inv_info.asp?ItemID=168485) - they aren't frequently this young in City Hunter. For the most part it's a cure for high school aged girls, but there are some. Ryo seems to find them "acceptable" only if ~5 years removed from high school.

Profile (http://falcon.rubberslug.com/gallery/inv_info.asp?ItemID=168486) - A nice profile of yet another unknown woman. A common problem in City Hunter.

Look out! (http://falcon.rubberslug.com/gallery/inv_info.asp?ItemID=168487) - the movement lines here suggest something is coming.

Bijyo - 2 (http://falcon.rubberslug.com/gallery/inv_info.asp?ItemID=168488) - I wish the face was fully painted on this one, but I could turn it into a project...to finish the job.

It would just be on the front (or the back, not sure) - thats why the hair wraps around like that so the image is circular with no unfinished edges. Just imagine a circle on a shirt, then replace that circle with the Akari head image.

Ok, I had planned to do an entire NON Battle Athletes update...but this first cel was such a pain to scan and join cleanly I ran out of energy to do any more. Didn't get it perfect but its close enough I hope.

Looks like a good merge to me. I almost grabbed that one when I first saw it, but couldn't quite justify spending so much on a non-Nanami cel. It got sold before I could change my mind, and now I know where it went. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif

Nice job. I can't see any evidence of merging, so it is definitely "good enough." With a cel that large (wide too), I guess I can let it slide with only two updates. /images/graemlins/wink.gif

I have a bunch of cels in the SMJ backlog. Maybe I will feel motivated to request a shipment before too long.

You would be able to see it easily if you had access to the full sized scan. Shrinking it for display purposes tends to hide bad joins...but I can still see this one. Of course, I know where to look. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif

I've been slacking a bit of late, but a new shipment came in today. You'll have to excuse me for only putting up one cel, because it took 3 scans.

I think it's a good one though:

Saila with a rose (http://falcon.rubberslug.com/gallery/inv_info.asp?ItemID=171604) - Just about every Saila cel I've seen looks good and this one is no exception. I just love the flowing hair as well.

The cel came w/o a background, but as is customary with some of my nicer cels w/o BG's, I have added a gradient to help.

One more note: No, there are no details below the bottom edge. /images/graemlins/tongue.gif

My avatar is a copy of that Rei cel... it went for JPY350,000 back in the day. And since then, I have not seen another Eva cel go for anything like that Misato.

Mandarake actually had an Asuka and Rei to go with that Misato. The others went for about half, probably because only Misato's cel actually had nipples /images/graemlins/tongue.gif

On the Saila cel, I had bid on it the night before, but someone else came in with under 30 minutes left. I saw that I had been outbid and raised it again. Well, there's no way you could have known the 1st bid was mine, nor was there a way for me to know that was you on the 2nd bid. Sorry about that... It has been a while since another one has come up, sadly. Though I finally found another one.

Silvie Gena (http://falcon.rubberslug.com/gallery/inv_info.asp?ItemID=172465) - from Macross II. I don't remember Silvie being quite this lovely. The color saturation surprised me a bit. Many cels are "enchanced" when up for sale, but not this one. Other than a contrast fix after scanning (auto-tone is off these days) I didn't make any other adjustments... no, not even to the lips. /images/graemlins/wink.gif
