Is the Japanese DVD of Wings of Honneamise cut?
It's 1 hr 59 minutes 36 seconds long.
The US DVD is 2 hrs 1 minute and 12 seconds long.
Is the difference in runtime ( 1 minute 36 seconds ) caused by the strange encoding or does the Japanese DVD miss the attempted r*** scene?
Does anyone know?
I was thinking of making a combination DVD with the director's commentary from the US DVD together with the Japanese Video and subtitles from the US DVD. But since the runtime is so different it won't work.
Thanks for your help.

The additional runtime is likely caused by addiitonal logos at the start of the film (Manga Entertainment, etc.) and an English credits translation at the end of the film, much like the Manga release of End of Evangelion.
I don't know for sure, but I've never heard of the US release of this film being any different than the Japanese version - aside from being poorly encoded, and I HIGHTLY doubt the Japanese release would be edited. If you wanted to include a different audio track you could always use an authoring program (like DVDLab Pro) to offset the AC3 track by however many seconds you'd need to match the Japanese video, or by actually re-encoding the audio track and removing the 'excess'. I've done both before, and I prefer to not re-encode where at all possible.

Yes it's cut. The missing scene is included as an extra on the Japanese disc. I don't remember exactly where, but if you download the dvdsubber script from scriptclub that'll have the details. That said, I'm not sure whether that scene is on the R1, so if it's not it's possible that there's somethign else missing as well.
EDIT: I looked where it's supposed to be on the R1 (43 mins in or so) and it's definitely not there. Maybe it's in a different spot on the disc, but I'm not going to watch through it to check. Logos only account for 30 seconds, so there's still 1 min unaccounted for that the scene would normally cover.
EDIT2: Never mind I figured it out. It's the english credits at the end that screws it up. It's not cut.

It's only as an extra on the US disc as well.

Thanks for the comments. I'm not sure I can move the sound as much as is needed on DVD Lab Pro. I think it's about 30 seconds I have to move it forward. How would I tell the program to do that? I've only used direct copies of soundtracks or edited soundtracks with it before.
Thanks again.

I believe the scene was cut so that the movie would fit on a single CLV format laserdisc (the scene made the movie just over two hours). It was put back into the movie for the CAV LD box. Not sure why they couldn't leave it in for the DVD.
