Argh, TRSI got me again! /images/graemlins/cry00000.gif

Or, rather, they would have gotten me pretty badly if pre-orders weren't excluded. So as things stand, I'll just be picking up Angelic Layer and possibly Rune Soldier. There are a lot of upcoming thinpaks that I'm interested in, but I'll have to wait until the next sale to order them, I suppose.

I'm already planning on picking up Godannar. Thanks for reminding of Five Star Stories. Another show with nice widescreen visuals for an HDTV setup. I'm usually no fan of mecha shows but I rented FSS and was impressed enough to want to check out the manga/GN situation which I rarely do. Unfortunately, the manga seems to be never-ending and the R1 release(s) seem to be a bit of a mess. $1000 for an used copy on Amazon????? Looking forward to owning the anime though.

I’m thinking about picking up volumes 6 thru 12 of Aura Battler Dunbine while the price is right. Five Star Stories is looking pretty tempting as well. This sale is probably gonna end up putting a hurtin’ on my wallet. Being an impoverished college student sucks…

My sympathies, truly. I remember times when I was in college deliberating seriously over whether I could afford to plunk for a magazine. Being an anime fan under those financial conditions can't be easy. /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif

As for general ADV suggestions, I'd recommend the attractively designed thinpaks for their best series: Eva Platinum, Noir, and Kino's Journey.

The FSS manga does seem to be never ending, but it's still readily available at Kinnokuniya bookstores... I'm amazed at the prices on Amazon! I never did find the DVD at Best Buy, so I might pick it up this time around.

How are the extras on Godannar? I'm tempted to wait for a thinpak set in a few years, but if the extras are good, I might go for it.

Another thing to consider is the limited quantities of some of the EA titles such as Dragon Half and Sorcerer Hunters OVA. IIRC Rune Hunters EA also seems to be OOP and TRSI is pretty much the only place left with it in stock. At $12 - $14 each, you might want to pick some of those while you still can.

Super Gals! Super Gals! Super Gals!

Okay, other than Super Gals, I'd recommend Kaleido Star, Azumanga Daioh, and Dragon Half. Angelic Layer is good for the CLAMP fans as well.

Edit: I just noticed it says select. I'd still recommend those though, whether they're on sale or not. All are pretty cheap. The series' have thinpacks and Dragon Half is 1 DVD.

I'm glad it's ADV this time around because I may not be home to receive shipment and most of their titles on my wish list can wait. I'll probably still put in a late order for things I forgot to preorder such as Princess Tutu #5 and UFO Ultramaiden #2, but that's about it.

Sister Princess singles are still priced at $14.57 after sale+GA discount. What kind of a deal is that when the 7-volume thinpack can be preordered for $37.49 [$5.36 per disc]? The Kaleido Star set may be discounted to $24.29, but that's still slightly more than I'd expect to pay during next month's DDD sale, assuming it is included there. There are 17 pages of ADV items in the sale list, but did anyone notice that there are 7 pages of ADV items not included in the sale? It's time to rejoin the rest of the market, ADV.

My top recommendation:

Petite Princess Yucie - This has become my second favorite show in my massive collection. It's simply incredibly enjoyable to watch. The characters are what makes this so great, they are a lot of fun. Seriously, don't pass this series up!!!

Other recommendations:

Another show I highly recommend is studio BONES take on one of CLAMPS manga: Angelic Layer (http://www.asian-stuff.com/anime/review_44.html)

Najica (http://www.asian-stuff.com/anime/review_23.html) is a great "guns n' girls" show, with just as many panty shots as shots fired.

I had a good time with the Sakura Wars franchise, so I recommend picking up OVA 1 (http://www.asian-stuff.com/anime/review_38.html) and OVA 2 (http://www.asian-stuff.com/anime/review_37.html) (available in a single collection), as well as the TV series (http://www.asian-stuff.com/anime/review_72.html).

Aquarian Age (http://www.asian-stuff.com/anime/review_13.html) is a good character driven show.

I thought Yumeria (http://www.asian-stuff.com/anime/review_81.html) was a lot of fun, so I also recommend checking that one out.

Also good:

Magical Play (http://www.asian-stuff.com/anime/review_24.html) is a fun show, and Neo Ranga (http://www.asian-stuff.com/anime/review_39.html) was pretty good in my opinion, although I know some wouldn't agree. Saiyuki (http://www.asian-stuff.com/anime/review_36.html) was also decent, but the animation is craptastic.

Wedding Peach (http://www.asian-stuff.com/anime/review_32.html) is also pretty good, but you should pick up Princess Tutu and Pretear first if you don't have those yet.

Maybe they've just joined part of the market? IIRC, the last Viz sale from RightStuf excluded their manga (pre-orders or released stuff).

Well, the limitations will still allow me to pick up a few items (two or three Tutus, at least).

After pouring through the listing yesterday....it seems to be a bit more streamlined than I thought:

Rune Soldier thinpak, all the Saiyuki double packs, shuten doji, kekko kamen, saint seiya, ...and a few others. I want saint seiya badly...but...it is in machine robo chronos territory firmly now. Rune soldier is likely...and probably saiyuki since there won't be another chance to pick up all these double packs at a good amount off anytime soon.

But then I gotta rationalize it all to include the weekly for this week and for next...

This'll likely be a last minute order for me then. /images/graemlins/cry00000.gif

[/ QUOTE ]The ADV exclusion principle is pretty much a recent phenomenon. I think they started the practice last year. Other than Geneon's lower than average studio sale discount, ADV sales seem to offer the least incentive. As for applauding limits as a way to control one's own spending habits - a bit egocentric, don't you think?

Top recommendations include:

Evangelion and Macross: Duh. Two of the biggest titles in the mecha genre. Can't go wrong with these.

Getter Robo Armageddon and Mazinkaiser: Major thumbs up on these revival OAVs of the two 70's robot greats. Just flat out giant-robots-kicking-alien/monster-ass. SHIN.... SHINE SPAAAAAAAARK! TURBO SMASHER PUUUUUNCH!!

Princess Tutu: Everyone should get this. Yes, everyone. It's that good.

Gatchaman: Just plain old school goodness. Nuff said.

Full Metal Panic (1-5+7 available in bargin bin) + Fumoffu: Kick ass action and laugh out loud comedy.

and off topic, since it isn't anime, but I will be a friend for life to anyone who will try out the first season of Farscape. It comes out to around $40 a season for the cheaper re-release edition (Starburst Editions). The best science fiction television show ever created. Come on, grab the first season. You know you want to. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif

I love Nurse Witch Komugi.
The show is a parody of anime in general and magical girl shows in particular. For me it was really, really funny. There is also much cuteness and quite a bit of fanservice, but the service is really part of the parody.
Just watching the opening of this show makes me happy.
Nurse Witch Komugi makes me feel good.

here are my suggestions. They are all complete collections so they are good values.

These are among my favorites:
Angelic Layer
Super Gals
Sakura Wars (TV and OVA)
Rune Soldier

These are not, quite, favorites but I do like them enough to rewatch them:
Blue Seed
Dai-Guard
Dirty Pair Flash
Dirty Pair (movie box and OVA box)
Full Metal Panic
Happy Lession
Kaleido Star
Mezzo
Najica Blitz Tactics
Wedding peach

I will also mention Petite Princess Yucie because it is one of my favorites. But it does not have an inexpensive collection yet, so it might be better to wait on it.

Edit: I can't believe that I forgot Angelic Layer the first time. /images/graemlins/sweat200.gif

What I like? Great animation, lovable characters (you WILL cheer Sora on) and a simple yet very appropriate plot. In the end it comes down to the characters though (of course) because that's how it always is with me. The only downside, I guess, would be that some of the old "new girl gets picked on by mean girls jealous of her success" storyline we see all the time in any idol-type show (I don't just mean singing, anything competitive suffers from it really), but that's to be expected. I do hear that aspect gets heavier in New Wings which leaves me somewhat apprehensive, but I'll still be buying it, though maybe in a boxset.

As a side note, I'm watching the Angelic Layer thinpak now (on disc 4 of 5) and very much recommend it to anyone who was on the fence. Fun show, Tamayo is the best!

City Hunter springs foremost to my mind at the moment, since I am in the middle of semi-marathoning it as we speak. Good luck getting anything beyond the movies though, as the series' collections are OOP and hard to track down. I think TRSI only has the movies listed currently.

I wonder why the BGC2040 Perfect Collection is 50% more expensive than all 3 of the individual EA volumes combined, especially since it's been out longer. Is the Perfect Collection thinpak or a boxset?

And being more partial towards quality reversible art and inserts if possible, which versions of Dirty Pair (original OAVs and movies, and Flash) and the Slayers specials should I go for? And for fans of Goemon, is Legend of the Mystical Ninja recommended? Thanks!

You answered your own question with the part I bolded. Naturally a newer rerelease (EA discs) is going to be cheaper. Especially when the other is more than three and a half years old.

And it can't be a thinpak since it came out in 2002 (according to ADVfilms.com), long before ADV started with thinpaks. As for boxset vs. brick, I don't know.

I'm quite happy with my Dirty Pair Flash brick. Nice & compact with all extras on the dvd's. I don't think there were reversible covers on the individual releases.

My thinpack original Dirty Pair OVA's & Movie packs may be a different story. Since like all thinpacks, they've stripped off extras. Still, I'm happy with them and they take up damn little room.

The singles for the Dirty Pair movies don't have any extras, so it doesn't make any huge difference which one you get. The two OAV discs have a few of ADV's Dirty Pair trailers and clean OP/ED. While not an extra, the two singles also have alternate angles for logos and title cards- I don't know if the thinpak version does as well.
