View Full Version : Buyritedvd security breach

Both myself and a friend have started to receive spam sent to email addresses that we have only used with buyritedvd.

We both have our own domains, so are free to make up as many email addresses as we want. In his case, he just puts the name of the company in the address - for example buyritedvd@hisdomain.com. I am a little more tricky and use some random letters and then keep a list of what random letters go with what company.

Anyway, starting back on the 5th of may, we've both been receiving mortgage spam with the subject like "Re: the crred" sent to these addresses that are unique to buyritedvd.

Since we have never used these addresses for anything except purchases and correspondance with buyritedvd we can safely conclude that one of two things have probably happened:

1) Buyritedvd sold the email addresses from their customer list to spammers.

2) Buyritedvd has had a security breach - maybe hackers on their server, maybe an "inside job" from a disguntled employee or the like - which resulted in them losing control of their email list and probably the rest of the information in their customer database including shipping address, billing address, telephone, and credit card info.

Number 1 would simply be bad business practices on their part - bad enough to desrve a boycott.

Number 2 could be a whole lot worse, fraudulent charges on your credit card, possible identity theft, etc.

I haven't contacted buyritedvd myself about this because they were closed for the night long before I noticed what was going and I'm lazy enough to just post the warning her and let someone else take it up with buyritedvd. Anyone else getting the spam "Re: the crred" might want to contact buyritedvd themselves.

It looks like another email virus going around; I've never shopped at Buyritedvd and I've been receiving "Re: the ccred" spam emails from different addresses over the last couple of days, so someone *else* who has my email has been compromised. BTW the footer of the email looks like a snip from some sword and sorcery novel.

While I don't buy at Buyrite, I do get the occasional "rolex" spam now and then. I only use my core email for contests on AOD, and to order from trustable stores. So sometimes it worries me heh. But they're so few and far between that I ignore them, as the internet is full of spam.

Something I do is I turn off html and pictures in my email.
