Ok I know that their is a realtively cheap five episode Oh my Goddess ova. The question is how good is it comparied to the Tv series? Does the tv series ignore it entirely and basiclly start from scratch?

Both start in the same place, that of Keiichi meeting Belldandy, but from there, the TV series, which is much longer, fits a whole lot more of the manga material. They're both pretty much awesome, I say, who have not yet seen the second half of the TV series.

They're both good and both re-tell the same story so you don't need to see one before the other. Just keep in mind that the TV series is about a decade newer than the OVA and the animation quality reflects that. If you're curious about the show, I'd still start with the OVA just because it's shorter and makes a good "taste test". The TV series is a full season with a second season already in airing in Japan which is a lot more to buy into.

Thanks guys! Now I know to get the Ova in the near future and wait for the tv series to be box setted/thin packed.

Yes. But if you get the OVA, make sure you're getting the new remastered edition.

I prefer the OVA character design, particuarly Belldandy's rounder face. Keiichi is also more distinctive than the TV & movie versions IMO.

The OVAs opening & ending songs I prefer as well.

AFA voice acting, the TV voices (same Japanese VAs) sound slightly different, maybe a bit more everyday. Belldandy seems a bit firmer & less delicate (but still gorgeous), Urd is least changed IMO. Skuld is less bratty sounding.

10+ years will make a girl firmer, of course, whether goddess or seiyuu. Inoue Kikuko's been in the bidness almost 20 years now (and has taken on some rather tawdry roles in that time, and she's really good at those!). But both she and Kikuchi Masami (K1) sound great in the new show and still have good chemistry together.

Anyway, since I'm a relative noob to the O/AMG universe, having only started picking up the manga when they unflopped volume 1, I would like to know (how? where? when? if?) the movie fits into the storyline. Or does it just … exist?

AMG movie is sort of similar to Sailor Moon R and Sailor Moon SuperS movies. It's just... there. It doesn't fit into the storyline at all. Celestine doesn't exist in the manga, at least through volume 18.

Go for the OVAs, especially if you have never watched Ah My Goddess before. The OVAs are some of my all time favorite anime and always places me in a good mood after watching them.

As for the TV series, I've only seen a few episodes, but it is definitely much slower paced and more loyal to the manga. I can easily say look into it after you are done with the OVAs and if you enjoyed them.
