Alright I believe this is anime related so wtf is it? I keep seeing that name on numerous releases in the past year or so and everytime I try to find some information I pull up nothing useful. So would anyone care to fill me in?

Sure it isn't Densetsu? I think it means legend or legendary or something to that effect and is used in numerous game and anime titles.

It's dentsu I've seen it on at least three of Geneons artboxes (Saiyuki Reload/Gunlock, Mermaid Forest). May have seen it other places as well but those are the one's I know.

It's a Japanese advertising agency. One of the biggest if not the biggest in Japan. The company purchased Pioneer Entertainment to become Geneon (IIRC).

'Geneon' is just the anime-producing bit that used to be Pioneer LDC/Entertainment; the rest of it is still called Dentsu, afaik. (That may have been what you meant, just clarifying.)

That's correct. In fact, Dentsu IS the largest advertising agency in Japan. They are often times involved in the anime industry, mainly producing TV and theatrical anime. They bought both Pioneer LDC and Pioneer Enterainment (USA) and on October 1, 2003, their names are changed to Geneon Entertainment, Inc. and Geneon Entertainment (USA), Inc., respectively. Dentsu wholly owns both companies (Geneon Entertainment DOES NOT OWN GENEON USA!!!).

Chiyosuke has it pretty much right. Here's a few more details.

Geneon Entertainment and Geneon Entertainment (USA) are sister companies, basically on the same corporate level under the Dentsu umbrella. However, while the main of our business here at GUSA is anime, GJP is a broader entertainment company, doing things with popular music, live-action television and film as well as animation. They are perhaps more comparable to what Warner Brothers does in the US.

Pioneer Electronics remains as it is (we are still located in the same building as them, though our offices are now split off); basically, they wanted to concentrate on hardware manufacturing while Dentsu was looking for more content, and so, the transfer happened a couple of years ago.

I remember back when Dentsu first bought Pioneer and took it over, when I was buying their products a few years ago, I could still at first see the Pioneer logo on it. Later on, did the Geneon logo eventually get added on the DVD cases. (This was around the time Pioneer still had titles being released, such as Mahoromatic and Chobits. /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif

As part of the corporate transition, we dual-branded a number of our products for a little while. This was to make sure that folks made the connection between the old Pioneer Entertainment and the new Geneon Entertainment. We're now fully and only Geneon Entertainment logowise, including new pressings of older titles that were originally released under the Pioneer name.

One last thing: when you see Dentsu listed in the credits of our titles these days, it's not because they are our parent company, but because they are the licensor/coproducer for the property.
