Gainax has announced that this Fall there will be a theatrical run for a compilation movie that completely chronicles both Aim for the Top! (Gunbuster) and Aim for the Top! 2 (Diebuster). There is currently no information on new footage or runtime as of yet.

Edit: Now there's more info!

This Fall there will be a theatrical Aim for the Top! 2 (Diebuster) movie which is a 90min compilation of the OVA series with newly added footage. The movie will be screened as a double-bill feature along with a newly put together Aim for the Top! (Gunbuster) compilation movie which is also 90mins, but will have no new footage. Instead the Gunbuster compilation will feature a brand new voice recording with the original cast.

I really don't know what to think of this.

Somehow it's not so bad when Gundam does it for a 49-episode series, but this movie will be literally what, compressing a 6-hour OVA set into a feature-length movie?

Right now the only thing I can see this meaning is yet another video for Gunbuster completists to buy, but maybe that's just the jaded talking. If the original series scenes are re-animated to match the new series look (or vice versa), I suppose it could be worth seeing.

Combining Gunbuster and Diebuster into one movie? Length aside, that's going to be the most jarring mix of art styles ever.

What in the...

I could understand a movie compilation of each series individually, but -together-? o_o

/images/graemlins/relief1.gif As if it wasn't bad enough that they made a sequel of Gunbuster (and what sequel /images/graemlins/depresse.gif) can't they just leave the original serie alone.

Oh well this is Gainax, ready to do anything to milk to death their series.

They're like the Salvador Dali of anime - they can make something absolutely mindblowing and beautiful, but at the same time they've got the commercial instincts that'll get 'em to pose with Alice Cooper for a hologram.

I mean, some of Gainax's work is harrowingly powerful, and then they use that very same work as the foundation for a strip mahjongg game.

I get the feeling that these guys create works that are much bigger than they themselves are, and they don't quite know how to deal with that - so they seek their comfort in making tits.

Not buying. All the science lesson omakes & having episodes make Gunbuster special.

Interesting to see what they do for audio. Could be DTS there. And if a next gen DVD release.

I'm very interested to see how/if/whether it will run the stories concurrently or one after the other.

We could be in for a film capable of giving even Tarantino a headache.

Now this could either turn out to be 1 of the best ever compilations of mixing a classic and new sequal into a movie or completly the opposite. IMO, if they it's done with added animation here and there plus new voice acting (aka Zeta Gundam Compilation) then it could actually turn out to be good else i am not sure. Let's wait and see /images/graemlins/happy.gif

And dammit, no changes to the original seiyuu of any of the 2 especially the original Gunbuster.

A bit off topic, there is a Gunbuster game for the PS2 that was released in 2005 that actually re-tells the Gunbuster story as a TV series. I surly wouldn't mind something like that as a remake for the original /images/graemlins/wink.gif

Hmm, 90 minutes of Diebuster... that might be short enough for me to watch it. Maybe I'll stay for it, but I'll probably leave after Gunbuster.

If the Gunbuster compilation has newly recorded voices, I suppose the music and SFX will be remixed into 5.1 or DTS. I guess it means that a dub will be possible for it as well (not that I'd personally be interested in hearing it).

Ooh, I'd like to be in a cinema to watch the end credits, with that music playing over the top.

The one thing that scares me about this is the possibility of a region one company releasing only this version. It would be very easy for them to see this as an easier bet than the 6-part OVA, which would probably have to be released on two discs.

Definitely can't say I'm interested, now. Gunbuster never struck me as too long, and the voices were great. Diebuster's fine as a six-episode series too.

I am happy that there'll be a new dub for the original, just because it means a restored music & effects track, which means a dub is possible if anybody ever releases the damn thing in R1. Not holding my breath for that (and, like I said, the Japanese voices are great anyway), but I'll never argue with a dub for a previously sub-only release.

Preview (http://www.top2.jp/asx/top-top2_movie_pv.asx) link for the new compilation movie.

This toy (http://www.tamashii.jp/gunbaster/index.html) looks pretty sweet as well. It even breaks up into Buster Machines 1 and 2.
