View Full Version : The Catgirl List

An off-hand comment from a friend got me to thinking about creating a comprehensive list of all catgirls in anime. Not just a list, but a comparative page that shows the pros and cons of each catgirl in anime. I will limit it to anime catgirls. No video games, manga, live action, etc. Also, they have to be feline in more than just clothing. Wearing catears or a tail doesn't count.
Here's a short list to start off with:
Aisha Clan-Clan from Outlaw Star
Annapuma and Umipuma from Dominion: Tank Police
Aria and Lieze Lotte from Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha A's
Bagi from Bagi, Monster of Mighty Nature
The Cheshire Cat from Miyuki-chan in Wonderland
Chinami and Yuriko from Ground Defense Force! Mao-chan
Fam from Ruin Explorers
Ichigo Momomiya from Tokyo Mew Mew
Maya from Geobreeders
Merle, Naria and Erya from Vision of Escaflowne
Mia and from .hack
Natsuki from Hyper Police
Nia from DearS
Nina from Wordsworth
Miss Nyako and her neice, Konyako, from Eden's Bowy
Nuku Nuku from All Purpose Cultural Cat Girl Nuku Nuku
Pink from Dragon Pink
Miss Sanada and her catgirl maid squad from UFO Ultramaiden Valkyrie
Shader from Chrono Crusade
Shampoo from Ranma 1/2
Tabby from .hack//Roots
Tamami from Angel Tales
Taruto and others from Magical Nyan Nyan Taruto
Yoriko from Da Capo
Who is missing? Who shouldn't be on the list? What are the pros and cons of each catgirl? And most importantly, what defines a catgirl? Is Nuku-Nuku a catgirl? To be a catgirl, does she need a tail and ears, or will one or the other do? This could very well be the most important question facing anime fans today. So let your voice be heard!

I think Nuku Nuku counts. She's actually more cat than most, as her brain really is a cat's brain.
You could also have potentially added Ms Sanada's catgirl maid squad to the list, or are you looking only for those who are major characters and have names? Most of the maid squad does not.

If your going to have Mia from .Hack//Legend, you'll need to add Tabby from .Hack//Roots. I'm sure I know others but it's 7:30am my brain hasn't really woken up yet.
However I have a question, if you're including Nuku than artificial constructs are acceptable?
I believe that a tail and ears are absolutly required. So to that end the best representative prototype should really be Ichigo Momomiya from Tokyo Mew Mew. She has all the good catgirl qualities I think.
Ears and tail.
Some kind of bell (Tail).
Cute.
Uncontrollable feline urges. (Love of fish, chasing balls and ribbons and stuff)
I haven't watched the whole series yet, but It would be interesting to see the effect catnip would have on her /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif

You have Mia on your list, but there's a new catgirl in .hack//ROOTS, 'Tabby'
(edit: curse you Xenosaber - beating me to it while I posted)
Where would we be without catgirls? /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif
Is Roponmatsu 2 (Excel Saga) considered a catgirl?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catgirl
has a few that you have missed
Some other significant anime catgirls not listed in the link include:
- Chibi Neko from Wata no Kuni Hoshi (綿の国星)
- Koshka from Usagi-chan de Cue!! (うさぎちゃんで Cue!!)
- Shiro(?) from Neko Neko Fantasia (*こ*こ幻想曲)

*Checks link and looks at list in link* Wait I thought Aruruu and Eruruu of Uawarerumon were dog-girls not cat-girls. As for the list in this thread I wonder if Koma of Shrine of the Morning Mist would count. Granted she's not traditional, but she has a human form, cat form and err I guess a monster form for lack of a better term.

There's some cat people in Spring and Chaos, but the names escape me at the moment.
And aren't there catgirls in Loveless? I know that two aren't really catgirls, but isn't there more than that?

Interesting. I wouldn't have picked Ichigo as "the archetype" or "template" of a catgirl. While it's true she has the qualities you mention, that list is only accurate when she's in Mew Ichigo mode. Until it's time for a transformation scene, she is just a normal-looking girl with little more than a catbell choker. By the by, Ichigo was also born as a totally normal human female, with no special feline characteristics at all. She didn't get her neko-side until the show begins. So while Mew Ichigo is a great example of a standard catgirl, I wouldn't call Ichigo overall an archetype. I think you need to be all catgirl all the time for that!
I've always thought, rather, of Escaflowne's Merle as the definitive catgirl. Not only does she have the requisite pointy ears, tail, and characteristics, she's also the most plausible catgirl I've seen. Merle's ears are a more realistic fusion of feline ears with how the human skull is laid out, and hence she looks like a more "natural" catgirl. That kind of thought counts for a lot: it's obvious she was born a catgirl and is the real thing. I like her natural stripes (thighs, upper arms, tail, and cheeks), pointy eye teeth, slightly sharpened fingernails, and fur puffballs as well. Physically she's as well-defined as you can get I believe.
Merle is also well-defined emotionally, in that she's cute, mischievous, and loves to pounce around: all important and realistic for a catgirl. The original designer put a lot of thought into her, and it shows. She's what a catgirl would be if one really existed, so if anyone is deserving of the title of "definitive," it'd be Merle! /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif

Her daughter, Ariadonne, isn't a catgirl though. I guess Ariadonne inherited more from her father than from her mother.

I agree with everything, except one part. I think that you should give Ichigo a little more credit. She was transformed at the genetic level. She doesn't have to transform, to show feline characteristics, all she has to do is get excited and her ears and tail pop out. She also always lands on her feet. Transforming just gives her full access to her powers, that's all.

Okay, next step. Lets' start rating them. I was thinking of a radar graph rating them from 0 to 10 in five different categories: feline, cute, ferocious, sexy, insane. I'll also try to include something special about them, something that makes them stand out from the rest of the catgirls.
For example, I'll start with Maya from Geobreeders.
Feline: 8 - She's able to transform from fully cat to nearly completely human, with only the eyes as a give away. She can also pause the transformation at any point, making her a true catgirl.
Cute: 8 - She rates high here, too. She's cute as a human, but her feline tendencies make her as cute as a little kitten as she plays with the cattail or chases butterflies.
Ferocious: 5 - About average, since she is Taba's protector. She's faced down a few phantom cats in his defense, although she's not the most ferocious catgirl out there.
Sexy: 2 - She has the figure of a 12 year old girl, so she can't really be described as sexy.
Insane: 1 - She's probably one of the most well-adjusted catgirls out there. She has no emotional hangups, nor is she prone to violence.
Special: She's a phantom cat, so she can travel through power and phone lines. She can control computers. Her relationship with Taba is a high point of the show/manga. She's more than an observer/protector. She's his friend and little sister as well.
Do you think I have the right five categories for rating catgirls? Do you agree or disagree with my numbers? Take a catgirl and try rating her. We can discuss the ratings and I'll try to put together a definitive catgirl webpage. Oh, and we'll need images. Like this (http://img97.imageshack.us/img97/3513/maya039hf.jpg).
Finally, try to change the title of your post when you rate a catgirl so it'll be easy to identify it.

No, there are several females in the show, including a girl-girl pairing. However, while many characters have tails and animalistic ears (cat? dog?), these are physical attributes associated with not yet having become an "adult". I'm not a Loveless expert, but within the series, "adult" seems to be defined as someone who has had sex.

Feline: 8 - She has all the requisite features of a catgirl, plus she can transform into a full cat.
Cute: 5 - Cute, yes, but not overwhelmingly so.
Ferocious: 9 - When transformed into a cat, she can destroy cities. Even when in her normal catgirl state, she's a dangerous fighter.
Sexy: 7 - She's got the goods, and she knows it. She's not afraid to show them off from time to time, either.
Insane: 8 - Prone to violence, and she never seems to learn from previous mistakes.
Special: She's an officer in her people's military.
