View Full Version : Memorable non-romantic couples

Are there any couples that you find memorable where both of them are of the opposite genders and heterosexual and very compatible (age, etc.) and attractive and while their bond is very strong, yet strangely there is clearly no romance between the two of them?
To get the ball rolling so that you know what I am talking about, I'll mention Erementar Gerad's Kuea and Rowen. Quite honestly, I'm surprised that they are not a romantic couple even though they clearly care deeply about each other (in a non-romantic way).

Captain Harlock and Pirate Queen Emeraldas.
They're two people whose friendship is stronger than many characters' romances.

30 some odd manga volumes (spanning at least several years worth) and yet only a few kisses between them. Either Keiichi is gay or Belldandy is lesbian. /images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Most definitely. I can't think of a better one than this off the top of my head.
Other thoughts:
Rin/Archer (Fate/stay night)
Shannon/Senes (though it's more of a rivalry, really... Scrapped Princess)
Dutch/Revy (Black Lagoon, another recent entry)
Integra/Alucard (Hellsing)

Actually, I would quality this: We have a case of unrequited love on Batou's part, since Motoko is a lesbian.

I may be premature here, since I've only seen the OVA's and through episode 40 of the TV series (and not yet seen the New Files):
Patlabor: Noa Izumi and Asuma Shinohara--there like a really close married couple, who can barely keep their hands off of each other--but never actually get it together.

Actually if we take the manga into consideration she would be bi-sexual since she is shown dating a guy in section 1 (although it didn't last long)
My vote on the topic would be Ryoga and Ukyo from Ranma 1/2.

My vote also goes to Ryoga and Ukyo form Ranma. I loved that episode with the haunted cave and how they were working to break up Ranma and Akane.

What about Lafiel and Jinto? Unless this changed in later novels (I haven't seen Banner III).

You're right... /images/graemlins/shy00000.gif Taking the manga into account together with various actions and statements in GiTS:SAC, I would still argue that she clearly prefers women. /images/graemlins/cool.gif

Shinji & Asuka in Eva? /images/graemlins/devil.gif
Motoko in GiTS is bisexual IMO.

Megumi and Sanosuke in Kenshin? I don't know the manga, but in the anime at least they seem to be almost married with all the bickering but they never actually seem to get it together. I mean they clearly dig each other at times, but at others it's like cats & dogs.
Faye Valentine and Spike Spiegel from Bebop? It would seem after a while Faye would be interested, but Spike has baggage he can't clear away.
Teiresias: Good call on Noa and Asuma, and IIRC they touch on that again in movie 1 or 2, One of those,"Why didn't you ask me?" kind of things.
I don't agree with you on Alucard & Integra since I am firmly convinced that Alucard gets his jollies by corrupting people and his only interest in Integra is to see if he can eventually tempt her into crossing over. He's one sick puppy. /images/graemlins/tongue.gif Though I recently started getting into the Manga, that may change my views eventually.

Definitely Ayu and Morita from Honey and Clover; I thought the part where they were walking down the street holding hands and Ayu was narrating that since she didn't know how to pray for herself, she prayed for the owner of that hand instead was one of the prettiest scenes I've seen in a long time (although admittedly, it's been a while since I watched it, so that snippet may not be entirely accurate).
Also, Lina and Zelgadis from Slayers are always fun - just the right mixture of teasing, irritation, and respect.

Ditto. I think the same can apply to Goto and Shinobu..in The New Files, they find themselves in a 'situation' but it doesn't end in romance. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif
Maybe Fuyutsuki and Onizuka (GTO)? Don't remember seeing them get romantic.
Tetsu and Mizuki (Saikano OVA). Testu admittingly says if he wasn't already married, he'd be more than just a subordinate, or something like that.
Winry and Ed (FMA) Attached, yes, only if Winry takes into account her automail, though the two seem to keep denying some sort of affection to each other..then again, I guess Ed is really oblivious, but Winry just can't get through to him.

Considering only SAC, it seems like The Major isn't interested in sexual relationships at all. The manga Major is probably bi.

What? /images/graemlins/noseblef.gif /images/graemlins/noseblef.gif /images/graemlins/noseblef.gif Yeah, I guess it'd be hard for her to... you know... with all that "baggage" in the way. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif
Anyway, another good couple would be Mugen and Fuu from Samurai Champloo. Near the end of the series, Fuu has feelings for "Spike's predecessor," but he doesn't seem to be interested in her.

Hmm...
Tenma and Harima in School Rumble? One sides love doomed to failure but always good for a laugh...
Any of the girls with Kyon from Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya...if one of them does end with him, don't spoil it for me as each of his relationships are brilliant...
Ken and Sora from Kaleido Star - Poor...poor Ken, I feel his heart breaking every time Sora goes 'Oh, but he's not my boyfriend!' Their dynamic can be very silly, but also very serious as well...

They don't really count. I'm talking about couples where there's absolutely no romantic/sexual tension despite the fact that they might be compatible for each other.
