My votes to modify the Anime Draft rules went like this:

1. If there's a tie in the face-off vote, both participants should be allowed in. No need to punish players that draw even by not allowing them to continue on in the competition.

2. There should be more than 20 participants in the next Anime Draft so user that are highly interested in participating (like yours truly) should have the opportunity. But it should be capped at 25 players.

3. No backup votes necessary.

4. No bonuses. The NASCAR system is fine as it is.

5. The champion of the 2006 Anime Draft should have the right to defend his/her title, and allowed automatic entry into next year's draft. Winning the championship and automatic entry in next year's draft gives both old and new players something to shoot for during competition.

And now for the dumb question of the month: What's snaking?

Snaking in the Anime Draft (as well as the VA Draft which recently concluded and the Boys of Summer Tourney which is currently drafting right now) means that after the first round of actual drafting (for the Anime Draft it would be the second round because the first round positions are from the fast polls), the following round has its order reversed. So pick 20 (or whomever is the final pick for a round) picks first in the following round (giving the ends of the snake two consecutive picks).

It's a draft order variation. Instead of coaches making picks 1-20, 1-20, 1-20, etc, the order is reversed every other round. It ends up 1-20, 20-1, 1-20, etc. So if you drew the line with a pencil it might look like a slithering snake.

It's a pain in the butt, but some people seem to like it.

Tiered Bonuses for all medals are hurtful and distort the scoring results if they're only given for untied positions. Consider the following: Tie for first in Round A, no ties in Round B.

--Under 5/3/1 system like last year: Round A gets 1st (20), 1st (20), 3rd (18+1). Round B gets 1st (25), 2nd (22), 3rd (19). See the problem? Second place should NEVER be worth more than 1st place.

Either bonuses need to be applied for Medal positions regardless of ties, or there need be no bonuses at all.

The latter would make for a closer / more interesting competition, so no bonus is the way to go.

Okay, folks, we've got a little over a day left, and this is going to be the last round of major polls, since after this, all that's left is defining smaller aspects. If you've not voted already, be sure to, and help shape Anime Draft 2007 into the best AD yet!

Voting ends tonight at 9:25 PM EDT. Right now, it looks like fewer people are going to decide the second phase of voting than the first. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif If you haven't voted yet, hurry up and vote!!! /images/graemlins/knowital.gif

Phase two has now gone final.
<ul type="square"> Ties in the face-off battles will result in both players getting in, reducing the numbers in the final round
Number of players will be 20 or more, based in interest
There will be no backup voting
Anime Draft 2006 winners get nothing (have to earn their way into the next draft)
The scoring bonus question may need a runoff between No bonus (12/24) and a +3/+2/+1 bonus for untied medals (7/24). No bonus was still one vote away from a simple majority with the other three bonus options dividing the other 12 votes.

50% was the required target, so it will pass as no bonus. (You will note that revotes said for LESS than 50%.) I'm also going to leave this thread open for the next topic: player ejection. Here are the tentatively proposed rules-
<ul type="square"> Any person (player or not) may nominate a player to go to a problem trial. If a(nother) player seconds this, they will go to trial. The seconding must be by a player.
If a player goes to trial, the game will not be delayed. A seperate thread will be created with a simple yes/no poll to if the player is being obnoxious and/or reducing your enjoyment of the game. This poll will be open for 72 hours, and is open for all to vote in.
If the poll ends, and there is NOT a majority voting yes, the poll is discarded, and all goes on. (A 50/50 split does not count for a majority yes.)
If the poll ends with a majority voting ejection, and the game is still in draft phase, the first runner-up player will be offered their position, and the option to keep the current drafted people, or to release, and draft fresh characters. Released characters are open to be redrafted by anyone else, including the releasee. If a released character causes a series limit to go below the current allowed series limit (5 for 2007), any other character from that series may be drafted instead, closing out the released, and relocking the series with a different 5 characters. (Well, just the 5th one will be different.)
If a majority vote for ejection during the voting phase, the player's entries will be removed from future polls. Any currently completed polls will have that player's characters voided out, and scores of all characters below the voided character will be moved up 1 point, making the bottom position worth 2 points instead of 1.
To avoid a mass attempt to overtake a strong player, if someone has already been found not guilty, and a second trial is requested by someone, at least one of the following requirements must be met:
--Seconding by a forum admin, moderator, or the person in charge of the game. (In the event of multiple chairpeople, only 1 is needed to second it.)
--Approval of retrial by at least 2 coaches AND 2 non-coaches.
--The player to go to trial permits the trial to go on.
Should the player be found not guilty again, the player is exempt from further trial unless BOTH a forum admin/moderator AND the chairperson request one. In the event that an admin/mod is the chair, a second admin/mod will be needed. (Mods will be involved at this point, to ensure that rules are being enforced, and that nobody is being overtly rude.)
Any suggestions/clarifications/etc? I'm trying to catch all clauses here, and I'd like to hope that we can agree to any changes now, before I start (the hopefully final) phase 3. Same goes for if anything in the rules themselves need clarification. Speak up now; with dwindling numbers in the voting, your say is worth that much more!

If there are no objections to these rules, I'm going to cement those in. And that brings us to our final question- who wants to be in charge of AD2007? If someone wants to do it, let me know, otherwise, it'll be under my wing still.

But I guess he may as well. No, I don't want to run AD2007 myself. I can't in good conscience do so because I disagree with some of the rules that were put in place in these threads. Might play when the time comes, but I have no interest in administrating.

One other thing I won't be doing, which Anna Sartin will be particularly glad to know, is the Draft Board. Keeping up with the snaking order was a killer last year; ends of the snake went faster than pictures could be made. Since we're snaking again, I'm out of that job /images/graemlins/sweat200.gif. Wish I could have had "2 votes" for no snaking!

Hah, yeah, thanks! I forgot about this thread. And since we don't have a draft board, I've created a very crude page for AD07 here (http://www.geocities.com/dunno001/AD07). And I'm serious there about someone taking that off my hands!

Anyway, I've set up an end to the 2006 favorite anime, I'll be compiling that tomorrow. Sign-ups, though, will begin on Monday, January 1st, 6 PM EST. I will be going by official AoD time. To enter, it will be the same as last year- PM me a list of characters you wish to use, and I'll confirm which one you get to have. See the rules page for more information.

Okay, pardon my total newbitude on this subject, but what, precisely, is this poll, how do I sign up, what are the rules, et al?
I'd like to enter, as it certainly seemed entertaining last year(it's a big character poll, right?), but what I'd like to know are the specifics.
Sorry if this is clearly drawn out elsewhere, but I just wanted to know.
Thanks in advance.

It looks like anyone can vote for characters, not just 'players' who have picks. Which means I don't have to actually sign up to vote. The rules probably make perfect sense to people who have played before, but I only have a vague idea of how all of this works. I think I'll just observe (and vote) this year, and I'll "play" next year after I've seen how this works.

Well, this is my second year running it, and my first actually doing up the formal rules myself. However, I have been observing this for a while, so a lot of this is second nature to me. Let me try to clarify here. (Oh, and if something needs cleaning in the rules, please tell me, and I'll do that also.)

The anime draft is a competition of characters. (Some team captains like it to be a team competition, this is not a wrong way, rather, a different way, to play.) Anyone who chooses to try to play may, by submitting a ranked list of characters they would like to pick for the first round via PT to me. I will confirm which character from your list gets in. (Of the 12 so far, 2 have gotten their second character. Getting your first pick is all well and great, but if you get your second (or lower) pick, you've confirmed some character(s) you're up against.)

After the entry window closes (Noon EST on Monday), I draft up some small polls. These polls will determine who gets to stay in the game. A minimum of 20 people will be guaranteed in; if over 40 people submit entries, then I will allow half of them in. (IIRC, last year had 26 submissions. And should I get some absurd number, I probably won't be able to let half in.) If you make the cut, you will have to pick a total of 10 characters, 1 each round.

After drafting for all 10 rounds ends, the voting begins, with a new poll created every few days for each round. Voting in these polls is open to everyone: players, those who didn't make the cut in round 1, and observers. Points are awarded based on a NASCAR system, to prevent any runaway character from breaking the draft. The player with the most points after the 10th round closes is declared the winner.

I signed up... not sure how many players on each team. I sent you a list of 15 since I'm sure most of the characters I pick have been taken. It's prolly too late to complain, but it seems like an unfair drafting process since the first few players will get all of their top choices while those of us bringing up the rear get the leftovers. Oh well, it'll be fun anyway.

There is one character for each round, so each participant will have 10 characters in the end. Each person takes a turn each round to pick their character and it snakes, so the people nearer the end don't really have a big disadvantage.

The "fast rounds" happen before the main draft starts using everyone's first round picks and help decide the order as well as whittle it down to 20 participants (if there are more than that, which will probably be the case)

I hadn't signed up on AODVD for the last one but basically after the first round I believe it's similar to the Boys/Girls Tournament rosters from last year where each entrant picks a character in an order (If there were 20 people, round 2 would be whoever is ranked 1 first to go first for round 2, and rank 20 to go last, but on round 3, the person who was ranked 20th would go 1st, and the person who was ranked 1st would go last, and so on and so forth.)

Anyway, confirmed my 2nd pick has got through...an old dependable favourite...but as Dunno said, it means that I know at least one of the other entries...which was a high risk new favourite. Let's see how it goes...

I have a pretty good feeling as to which series it is that is more than half-closed already. There are not that many series that have enough potential entry card candidates where this would be true (I only see about three series that could possibly have three or more characters gone right now). :>

I have a pretty good feeling as to which series it is that is more than half-closed already. There are not that many series that have enough potential entry card candidates where this would be true (I only see about three series that could possibly have three or more characters gone right now). :>
IIRC, didn't last year's draft start with a series half-closed?

Correct. Azumanga Daioh started with 3 characters picked.

My character is selected and confirmed by Dunno.
Can't wait!

Sign-ups are going on now through Monday Jan. 12 & I think that Dunno will announce the field for the Fast Polls not too long after. Good to have you back to cover the Draft again. :)

Well, I have a dumb question. I was away from AOD for a while and I just came back recently and it seems lots of things have changed. How the heck do you PM now? :P Is a "private topic" a PM?

So now that I have won the award for dumbest question...

I hope the draft goes well this year :) I like the new rules.

Yes, starting a private topic is the same thing as a PM. The PM abbreviation is just something that's ingrained into me now, so calling it a PT just feels strange to me...

Sowwy... although nothing's been announced yet other than the signups, so you've really not missed anything yet. (That is, unless you want to play. As of right now, I only have 16 players interested, so there are 4 open slots...)

To make it real quick, this is something that simply boils down to who the most popular characters in anime are, and who's best at picking them out! If you would like to play, you send me a private topic with the first character you would like to pick. You may wish to pick more than 1, so that you can get in before the deadline if your first pick is already taken. If you have any other questions, feel free to reply to this thread, and I'll reply.

If only 20, not quite 20, or barely over (21 or 22) 20 people are signed up by Monday at Noon EST, how will the draft order set up? Would we still do the fast polls to determine draft order or just set the order by when each team sent in their entry cards and start the second round right away? :>

If it's over 20, even if it's 21, we do fast polls, since the main number is 20. I would only go over 20 if at least 40 people expressed interest in playing, which I don't see happening.

However, should the number not exceed 20, I think I will do something different. I'll just run the official round 1 scoring poll, and the top scorer gets draft slot 1, etc on downward, using submission order for tiebreakers only.

Since you mentioned it, how will the voting go this year? Will we get two poll votes and no pm (pt) vote?

Correct- 2 poll votes and no PM votes; was that not clear on the rules page?

Um...I guess so now that I actually read the rules page. I was trying to make heads or tails out of the first part of this thread. :sd:

I like your plan for if we don't quite get to or just arrive at 20. I just hope we get some more people to sign up in the next 35 1/2 hours to make this matter a moot point and have a fast poll that's worth running. :>

Nope, I've got no interest in playing, I'm satisfied with my top five from the first one. But I will keep up with the thread so I don't miss when the draft starts.

Less than 24 hours left to sign up for the qualifier to get into the 2007 Anime (Character) Draft. :>

Where does the entry card count stand right now going into the final day? :D

Not good for my tastes. 17 entries received so far, which means if only 3 more people sign up, they're guaranteed to get in.

Well, it was quite a... disappointing turnout for players signing up, but a deadline is a deadline. Due to the low numbers, the secondary plan will run, and round 1 will start soon.

Reminds me of the very first Anime Draft. Only had 19 players and nobody had come up with the idea of fast polls, so the game didn't take quite as long. Still lasted well into March, though! :P But we had fun!

So we're really at a low with this one, eh? If I remember, it will spawn a new question in the post-game feedback thread... That, and there's something else going through my head now, but it's not been discussed, so it won't happen this year.

Sorry, but yeah, the thread for round 1 is already posted. I didn't catch the default year change in the first one, so I had to destroy that one and fix it.
