Hello all.
I was wondering if there are new Berserk episodes in the works.
I own all 6 dvds and it kinda ended...well, it felt like it was unfinished. Can we call that Season 1 ? Is there a Season 2 ?
The thing that I heard about the Berserk manga is that the story continues beyond the anime series.

No.
No no no no no.

Short answer: No. If you want to know what happens, you have to pick up the manga (which is vastly superior IMO).
The longer answer? Media Blasters wanted to co-produce it, the Japanese wanted to make it, but the mangaka wanted to wait. So, as it is, we don't really know if they'll ever make more.

It is perhaps the most wished for sequal in the history of anime, but no, there are no more episodes for Berserk and no concrete plans to make them. It may happen some time in the future, but for now, what you have is all you get.
And yes, the manga continues on far, far past the anime.

I've expended my sarcasm for the day on 4chan and in the bandai thread on R1.
I'll be back tomorrow with more.

Ok than, since I seen the anime, anyone here would know from which manga volume to pickup to start from where the anime left off,
OR
Is there a big different between the anime and the manga that it would be better to start from volume 1 if I intend to learn what happends next?

I would highly recommend that you start from the beginning. The anime left out some very important details about the story that will be very important for later on. It also left out characters, one being very key, that appeared in the manga.
That said, if you really don't want to read from the beginning, the anime covers up to about three quarters of the 13th volume.

If I ever do have the budget, I wouldn't mind starting from volume 1 if its worth learning things that the anime left out.
Personally, I don't really read manga. I don't have that many. I prefer watching anime than reading them. Though, I do buy comics since 2003.
Berserk would be an exception to collecting an on-going manga series since there are no plans for new episodes.

Just a random comment - The artwork in the later volumes of Berserk is insane. I bought most of the later japanese volumes way back when the anime finished here, despite not being able to read a lick of japanese, and volume 22 especially just had my jaw on the floor page after page. I just recieved vol 11 from Dark Horse and it's getting pretty close to that level. One of the best manga I've ever read, and I highly recommend all of it, though the biggest differences from the anime are in the first three volumes. It stays relatively close to the show from then to where the show stops, though with a few extra battles, etc.

It leaves out quite a bit. Guts being sold by Gambino and raped by Donovan (hence his aversion to being touched), the introduction of the Kushan, Skull Knight, Wyald, The King's obsession and attempted rape of his daughter, the story of the origin of Midland and Gaiseric (who is most likely Skull Knight), the rescue of Rickert, Puck, etc etc That was just quickly off the top of my head. I'm sure there's more.

No problem. It's always nice to get someone interested in reading the manga. It really does outclass the anime in every way. It just gets better and better as it goes along, and as jejune noted, the art get positively jaw-dropping in the later volumes. It's really interesting to see just how much his art style changes and matures from the first volume to where it is now.

Why is it that every single time someone wants to ask if there are more episodes of something, they insist on giving the thread a misleading title and destroying my fragile hopes again? Why not just show up at my house and give me a physical pummeling?
There is at least a question mark. Doesn't LOOK like it was edited in, that usually gets noted.

Yeah, it depends on what you think is more superior for an artist since they have their own styles. Their evolution is pretty different along with what they draw. Miura has what I'd call a more detailed, gritty style that is able to capture all the scenes of the moment extremely well. Hojo's backgrounds aren't as impressive as Miura's (although they're still very clean and quite detailed), it's the way Hojo draws the facial features and reactions given by the characters, the way he gives each and every character a personality all their own. When you just think about the amount of women Hojo's drawn in City Hunter and how each of them are distinct in their own way, it's really amazing. You see an evolution of Tsukasa's style throughout City Hunter and you look at some of the Angel Heart stuff now along with how clean it is and it's nothing but amazing to see what it was to what it is now.
Despite the difference in preferences, I do fully admit Berserk is one of the best stories ever written and there is no question that Miura is an excellent artist that stands above most others.

Very cool. I can`t wait to see the artwork of the manga and start reading the series. I`ll let you know if I ever what to get into a different manga series.
By the way, how many volumes is there in all ?

To be honest, after reading the manga (up to vol.28 so far) i wouldn't care if they released a sequel to it or not because even for the animated chapters the manga outweights the anime in many aspects. Not that i don't want another anime for it or so because i'll surly be glad if they do, but for me Berserk is the manga !
A bit off-topic, i highly recommend the PS2 Berserk game for Berserk fans. It is based on the manga (i think vol.15 to vol.28) and features the original seiyuu from the anime for their roles (Nobutoshi Kanna as Gatts, Yuko Miyamura as Caska...etc) and new ones for the new characters. So even those who didn't read the manga would get the chance to enjoy more of Berserk anyway /images/graemlins/wink.gif

Hearing that makes me really want to start reading from volume 1 and and collect the whole series.
Only question now, if I do collect them, where would I store them. Between my board games, dvds and comics, I wonder where I will keep them. That is always a question to ask if you don't have lots of room.

Berserk was my segway into manga. I picked up the anime simply based on recommendations without really knowing anything about it. Then after finishing the series I (obviously) wanted more, so I picked up the manga.
Thank God for TRSI's Dark Horse sale recently too! I was able to get caught up all the way through Vol. 13. I can't wait for all my manga to ship. Berserk marathon baby! I'm so friggin' psyched! /images/graemlins/knowital.gif

Oh! That reminds me - all Berserk fans should pick up a cheap Dreamcast somewhere and play Sword of the Berserk: Gut's Rage. The story was written by the original author, and the cutscenes add up to several hours. It's set after the series ends. And to top it all off, it's a really fun game too - you actually get to fight Zodd the Immortal!!
It was actually my first exposure to the series, and prompted me to check out the anime. (Though it has an encyclopedia as an extra that totally spoiled the end of the series for me - BOOOO! I watched through the whole show thinking Griffith knew about the eclipse all along and was planning the whole thing - boy, did I think he was EEEE-VIL. )
Did the PS2 game ever come to America, or was it Japan only?

I own Guts Rage.. it's alright. I wouldn't buy a Dreamcast just to play it. Though I would buy one to play the many other great games the system has to offer. Even though the story is supposedly from Miura it's a pretty crappy little sidestory. I didn't like the dub either, especially Pucks voice. For some reason they pronounced Guts as "Gattsu" in English.
I'd much rather get my hands on the PS2 game, but importing PS2 games isn't as easy. I don't have a modded PS2 and you can't just use a boot disc thing like with Gamecube.

Because the game came out before the "official" english name for Guts was decided. They just used the Romanji to decide the way to pronounce his name. The game came out in either February or March of 2000. The official english name for Guts that was used by Media Blasters wasn't decided until 2002. The official artbook that has his name was 1999 which is why the game's subtitle has Gut's Rage.

His name in katakana is ガッツ which depending on how you romanize it could be either Gattsu (more literal) or Guts (more correct form). It's no different than with other names like Lupin whose name when written in katakana is literally romanized as Rupan. At the time there was most likely not an "official" name for him and so apparently the more literal romanization, Gattsu, was used.

That's great, so what? You asked why they used the name and I gave you a perfectly valid reason of why they would have. If you want to know exactly why the name was chosen talk to the people who worked on it. But it still doesn't change the fact that Gattsu is a perfectly legtimate romanization of the name.
Texhnolyze

I never argued against the fact that "Gattsu" was a romanization of the name. It's just one of the things I hated about the dub, in addition to the the voice acting.
I'm not really sure why you're trying to get all heated up and throwing an attitude with comments like "that's great, so what?" You've been registered 2 days and already have 50 posts. Maybe some fresh air?

Fresh air sucks, it means sun, and that gives me sunburn =( Ouch...
In any case, it's just another strange romanization issue, when there's rarely much in the way of logic behind these things, I think. I think Zod and Griffith are a bit more obvious, as "Guts" is just a strange name, but then again... a lot about Berserk is strange, and it's certainly fitting in that context /images/graemlins/sweat000.gif

His name actually isn't that strange when you consider how he was born and found by Gambino and his troop. And, well, we use the terms "guts" to reference courage and Guts has plenty of that as well.

It's an interesting story, but I never owned a Dreamcast. I know that there are some video games that are out which are about anime on the different game consoles.
Kinda funny that they would do a video game before the english version of the anime is out. Unless the video game in question was out only in Japon at the time.
On the other hand, I don't follow these things anyway, so I wouldn't know these things normally works.

Nope, and even though that it's not unlikely but my guess is no since it's been almost a year since it's release but not even rumors about a possible US release for it. Which unfortunate for those who can't play import games because IMHO this is the best anime based i ever played so far (not counting SRW) and it's not your typical average anime-based games.
Oh ya, the OP,ED & music scores are also done by Susumu Hirasawa who did the music for the anime and the Dreamcast game as well /images/graemlins/happy.gif

You know, I may be in the minority, but even though I love Berserk I really don't want to see more animated. Just because the ending as they showed it in the anime was so FINAL...anything they did after that would have to be a totally new direction for the story. And I don't know if I would care for that story, it was a lot of the characters who died that made me love the show in the first place. Without them, the show would seem, well, gutted. /images/graemlins/depresse.gif
