View Full Version : How about a Kimagure Orange Road discussion thread?

I've been thinking about this for awhile, and was hesitant to bring it up at all, but with the license to this show expiring soon, and so many people acquiring the show either through TRSI or Animeigo's bargain sales, I thought it might be nice to have an episode-by-episode thread. It would be in a similar vein as EmperorBrandon's CCS discussion (http://forums.animeondvd.com/showthreaded.php?Cat=&Number=1225496&page=&view=&s b=5&o=&vc=1) topic last year.

Is anyone else interested in this? There's a lot of fluff and filler to the show, yes, but also quite a bit romance and generally poignant moments. Not to mention the silly parodies. I'd also accept suggestions on a start date and such.

Any date to start is fine with me. My suggestion would be to start with KOR TV, then the OVAs and finally the movies since the timeline of the OVAs is a bit tricky depending on the episodes and it is easier to just have discussion of them after KOR TV even though some of the episodes happen during KOR TV. I've watched KOR TV completely twice and hope to watch it again before the end of the year.

I liked all of KOR and the so called fluff and filler help to flesh out the characters so I wouldn't consider it worthless of discussion. There were some cultural stuff I noticed that weren't mentioned in the liner notes and of course those that bought the singles don't get the liner notes unless they download those at Animeigo's site.

I adore KOR and would do my utmost to participate in such a discussion. If it were going episode by episode, I would suggest doing it: TV series - first movie - OVA series - second movie. As far as filler is concerned, I think there's something worthwhile in every episode, even if the value is mostly comedic, rather than plot-advancingly dramatic.

Wouldn't it be better if it was in this order: most of the TV series, OVAs, last few episodes of the TV series, first movie then the second movie?

I'm just starting to get into this show before it's too late to get it now. I think a KOR discussion thread would be a great idea. Count me in. Now I just have to catch up on watching the OAVs and the TV series. /images/graemlins/sweat200.gif

Sure /images/graemlins/happy.gif I'm re-watching - started before the announcement & have watched thru vols. 1 - 4 so far.

WRT the OVAs, can't remember offhand, but some have Kazuya, a character who does not appear until 1/3 to 1/2 through the TV series.
All are seasonal. I'll look up Anime Encyclopedia to check their original release dates.

But you're safe to kick off with the TV for awhile.

I'm definitely up for some quality "cheek time" and spirited discussion. I adore the OVAs and movies, but have only gotten around to watching the first disc of the TV series. GyBaNO's avatar is one of my favorites in my 3+ years on AoD.

Yup, the most abused pet in anime. Has a harder life than Menchi in Excel Saga IMO. Yours is cool too, where's it from - Miyuki-chan?

Try KOR volume 2, because that's really where the series gets going & characters start meshing, vol.1 eps. 1 - 4 being an introduction.

Read all of the manga, such a great manga. HAve yet to see the anime, but I hope its as great as the manga. IS the anime faithful to the anime the way Maison Ikkoku is?

Njr Scrawl

Generally yes. The anime has some stories straight from KOR manga, some not in the manga. Some are different.

In the TV anime, Madoka is more kimagure & Hikaru easier going, while in the manga Madoka is softer & Hikaru tougher. KOR 1st movie (& to some extent certain OVAs, apart from Hawaiian Holiday maybe) has their characters more manga-like than from the TV series.
Having said that, as I'm re-watching KOR TV at the moment & doing some more character analysing, movie 1 could easily slot in with both. Madoka can be tough, but she's still vulnerable. /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif

Hardly any fanservice in KOR TV. More in the OVAs, though for that the manga is undoubtedly best although nothing compared to manga series like Video Girl Ai & I"s.

2 OVAs have a unique character, Kyosuke's cousin Akane who can shape-change to mimic others. She's also bisexual & fancies Madoka.

The Jump KOR pilot also uses a story from KOR manga IIRC.

I've never read the manga, but from various hearsays of the KOR manga-fans thru the years, the anime and the manga are not exactly close to faithful like MI's manga/anime.

iirc, most noteworthy were the bias/preference of Kyosuke's sisters (subplot in itself, i believe) between Madoka and Hikaru are not as prominent in the anime as it was strong in the manga. Likewise Akane only appeared in the OVA, whereas I heard she's like a regular in the manga.

Like I said, I've never read the manga to verify the other prominent differences besides those noted above.

I'm up to ep.18 now. Interesting to read Paul Grisham's (where he?) reviews for AoD again.

I would have to rewatch the series and right now with all my backlog that is impossible. I might do it in the future but by the this thread would be probably lost.

I was thinking of kicking it in gear by the start of July. Would that work for those who want to participate? I think that most of the orders that Animeigo and others have gotten for the series should be filled out by then, right?

That would be fine with me but since Maison Ikkoku will have the final boxset out on July 4th, some people might want to start a discussion thread for that and I'm not sure how good the participation would be for two ongoing discussion threads. If this happens, I'll probably watch a complete DVD every 4 days for each series and "keep up" that way as I assume the format would be an episode a day for discussion. I'm not much for watching just one episode and swapping to another single episode of another series. Both series have 4 episodes per DVD.

I never did participate in the CCS thread since at the time my DVDs were all over the place and not very well organized. In any case a July start should work for most people even if they ordered from Animeigo today and the DVDs had to go clear to the other coast.

That should be fine. I think you just have to pick a start date and go with it and others will climb on as they get their orders. Are you going to do episode by episode or disc by disc? That might be a consideration for starting the discussion, i.e. a disc a month, an episode a week, etc.

I'm actually looking forward to this because this was one of the first anime series I saw in it's entirety. Thanks for starting this Shsway.

Yes, I did think about this (I'm also gonna be watching, discussing MI then). Alright, how about a start date of the 10th or the 15? Hmmm, maybe the 15th might be best at that. It might be further enough away from the day MI drops, without delaying too long for folks who may be watching KOR for the first time. Thoughts?

Gruesome: I'd prefer an episode-by-episode thread. I think it's the easiest way for all participants to chime in whenever they feel like, and throw in reactions to certain moments at random, while still being able to recall the specifics.

KOR was one of my first shows too, when I finally caught the anime bug. For sure one of my first loves in the medium.

I certainly would go along with your thinking, especially when you consider that a lot of people probably will be away from their computers during the July 4th holiday weekend anyway. There probably won't be a problem with people watching the last box of Maison Ikkoku even on the 10th since I'm sure that most will end up rushing through those discs. I like the idea of the 15th better though since there will be ample time for people who want to do the dual discussion threads for MI and KOR, to start both series.

Hi. Didn't want to start up a new thread for my question.. Had a question about the ending of the TV series.. So obvious spoiler here.

<span style='color:#dddddd;background:#dddddd'>
So when Kyosuke and Madoka was transported back to their present, did Madoka retain her memory of the time trip? Because Kyosuke seemed to be playing along with conversation as he knows what is going to happen, but was Madoka doing it also? She seemed to have a different expression at the "afternoon nap" comment than in the next to last esisode of the series..
</span>
Thanks

Hey there.

I might not be able to fully answer this question (my memory is on the fritz tonight), but I could have sworn that <span style='color:#dddddd;background:#dddddd'>Madoka was not playing along with Kyosuke, and did not remember the time slip experience at all. Didn't Kyosuke's grandfather must pick out a specific moment before that even happened to bring them back to? I realize that this must create some complicated scenario somwhere</span>...

Feel free to chime in whenever the series discussion thread goes up. There will likely be a lot of details that many of us will want to revisit on this re-watch, and hopefully enough people checking it out for the first time.

Nope. I do think that I'll be starting things up later than originally planned, closer to the end of this month or into August, given the delayed release of the final Maison Ikkoku box. As Colorado Jim pointed out earlier, folks will be preoccupied with discussing that series and those episodes for awhile. And since these two shows are usually compared to and associated with one another, it could get a bit odd, I guess.

My take from closely studying those 2 episodes, is that <span style='color:#dddddd;background:#dddddd'>Madoka does remember the time trip &amp; may even recall some details of her chibi-self meeting &amp; being rescued by Kyosuke. She is clever &amp; subtle enough to play it coy though, &amp; will not discuss it unless Kyosuke brings up the subject. Their replaying of the nap scene &amp; kiss is all the more poignant, bonding &amp; intense because of their shared time-trip. </span>

The TV ending also gives some OVA moments extra emotional clout, e.g. the scene in "I Was a Cat..." where Madoka <span style='color:#dddddd;background:#dddddd'>is depressed alone in her apartment, thinking she has been stood-up by Kyosuke. </span>

But mainly the TV ending helps explain how strongly Madoka reacts in the first movie. <span style='color:#dddddd;background:#dddddd'>After taking for granted that Kyosuke is in love with her, &amp; Madoka obviously is with him, helping him with revision more than ever &amp; being supportive - she learns he's given Hikaru a passionate kiss.

That really is enough to make her angry bigtime, then tearfully give Kyosuke his ultimatum etc.
I reckon after the TV series, Kyosuke &amp; Madoka probably were closer when they returned to normal life, &amp; seemed more a couple than before. Hikaru picked up on it &amp; (as she admitted) intensified her emotional attention on Kyosuke.</span>

Okie doke.

I'm giving this particular topic one more boost to express my desire to kick things off in one week - August 1. I was trying to make one particular day this week the start date, but I kind of fell asleep at the wheel. Thought it would likely be more proper to give a final heads-up tonight. /images/graemlins/sweat200.gif

This will be an episode-by-episode discussion, with the OVA series following the TV show (the viewing order provided for this by ANN (http://animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=492&amp;page=25) seems to be best?)

I still feel as though there should be a viewing break of at least a week between the TV series and OVA material. After that, we can all decide whether to simply dive into the movies immediately, and how long the discussion should last for these (I'm thinking at 2-3 days each).

I am happy that this will be starting, and I will be chiming in on many episodes.

I do, however feel that I have to be annoying just one more time, and suggest watching the the first movie right after the TV series, then moving on to the OVAs. The events of the movie follow on the heels of the TV series, with none of the OVAs (unless I'm very much mistaken) taking place in between. It would also follow the order in which the material was orignally released.

Having said all that, I'll be taking part regardless, and I don't want to delay things, so if you'd rather stick with your original plan, I will (once this post is over) have total respect for that.

See you Aug 1st.

I'm through the first 8 TV volumes so far.

The OVAs are arguably more manga KOR than TV, while the movies are either or neither...

Really we should be starting with the Jump pilot OVA..but its not R1 or any DVD /images/graemlins/wink.gif
