Ever watched an anime whose romance you wish was a bit different? Perhaps the most unlikely pair got hooked up? Or simply not your favorite pair? Or you wish the unrequited love could be returned?

Please cover your spoilers! Feel free to comment on what others have posted as well. /images/graemlins/happy.gif

I just finished watching Volume 6 of Samurai 7 and I have to admit, though it pains me to say it, that I'm a little disappointed at the romantic turn of events. Quite a bit of the beginning we are given scenes and hints that Katsushiro and Kirara would be sort of the main romance story of the anime, but as it turns out, or at least up to volume 6 that Kirara is actually in love with Kambei! KAMBEI!! My God! It came to me as a shock when we were given the first solid hint. But damn it, I should've seen it coming. Kambei is the only samurai of the seven that has ever impressed the priestess so it shouldn't have been a surprise. Still though, what will ever become of Katsushiro? He even kissed her and now we know for sure that she will not return the same feelings, at least he stepped up to the plate. And Kambei seems indifferent at the whole thing. It just pains me to see it, even more to accept it. If anybody has seen the ending, please spoil it for me!! I don't think I can take this suspense any longer. =P

Another one is Gungrave. When Big Daddy told Brandon that he was in love with Maria, and Maria loved him back it just tore my heart to pieces. That was Brandon's girl from the very beginning! =( The only reason Brandon didn't want to accept Maria's feelings is because he didn't want to drag her in the mafia scene, but stupid Big Daddy did it anyways. Bah! That one I really wish it was different. They could've even made Mika Brandon's daughter or something, that would've been interesting.

I guess I'm a just a wishy-washy romantic. I think I need a little Maison Ikkoku dose or something.

I agree about the Gungrave one, totally was like ACK NOOOOOOO!

I have this pretty thing I think, they have to look pretty together....

/images/graemlins/tongue.gif I can't recall any anime ones at this moment... I remember a lot of manga ones.

/images/graemlins/depresse.gif someone want to do my speech for me..... /images/graemlins/relief1.gif I'm procastinating again.

I never really liked the romance between Toya and Aya, as I always liked Yuhi more. Toya is too much of the silent type that seem kind of boring. And he was not there to support Aya for many difficulties that she had to face. Yuhi was always the person helping Aya. Even though Yuhi does have some flaws, such as his impulsive attempt to force himself on Aya, but he was more or less the nicer guy.

Meiko and Na-chan relationship was kind of weird. After he cowardly left Meiko "for her own good," I'm still surprised Meiko took him back over Satoshi. Satoshi just seemed to be a better match for Meiko.

I haven't seen the anime for Peach Girl, but if it's like the manga, I will hate the ending as well, since I feel Momo goes for the wrong guy in the end.

How about EVERY SINGLE Rumiko Takahashi romance. That woman is the master (uh, mistress?) of putting incompatible people together romantically. Her anime and manga are like a guidebook on how NOT to have a relationship.

my first thought:

Hand Maid May- Kazuya should have gotten together with Kasumi instead of May. But like many anime, the 2 leads almost always get together, even if it isn't the ideal choice.

Hmmm... I've only seen 3 or so Takahashi anime and I actually really enjoyed her romances. I just wish she finishes them. LOL! My favorite is of course Maison Ikkoku (Major spoilers) --Godai and Kyoko make a great couple. Godai compliments Kyoko much better than Coach Mitaka... and Mitaka is kind of a perfect fit for Asuna. The ones that are left in cold I guess are Yagami and Kozue. But I honestly only saw them as characters to speed up already established relationships through jealousy. Especially Yagami since she's so bold and hot tempered. =)

Actually, going through my collection I'm surprised there are only so few of these feelings. In most cases, I like the pairings. But...

DNAngel - It's not that I have anything against Riku, and I guess with the whole family angle it might have been the better solution, but for me the chemistry between Daisuke and Satoshi was much stronger. Eh, this is not an automatic BL preferred reflex, I just have it with this particular series

Fruits Basket (including non-translated manga spoilers) - I always favoured Touru with Yuki. Somehow I thought they had a much better matching temperament. I don't dislike Kyou, but he always felt like the second choice to me. Ah well, the mangaka decided it was going to be Kyou

Last Exile - I was a bit disappointed because I thought the Claus - Lavie pairing was too obvious. They're supposed to be like brother and sister. A romance with these two felt too forced for me. At least one of them, probably Claus, should have gotten seriously involved with someone else.

Revolutionary Girl Utena - I always felt Touga should have gotten a bit more out of Utena then he actually did. Maybe it was impossible in the storyline, but I figured she was about the only one right for him

Rurouni Kenshin - It was too bad Megumi and Sanosuke never really got involved. Maybe it wouldn't have last, him being a bit too uneducated for her, but I would have liked it to see further than it actually did

There are a few unfinished series that I do not want to be spoiled on and where the matter for me is undecided but where I have grave suspicions the eventual pairings will not be to my liking: Fafner and Gankutsuou.

And then there are the series where I'd wish for ANY kind of progress in the romance department, aargh... like Kyo Kara Maoh, where it is always teased away and never gets serious. Don't spoil me if there IS a later development.

I guess you're right that there's no "wrong" guy, but I was really pulling for the other guy since the end of volume 8 (or whichever volume the first arc ended on). I was pretty disappointed at the choice in the end, but you can't feel too bad for the guy that wasn't picked since Momo really wasn't such a great character herself.

So Sophia could never compete against her sister no matter how much she looked like her.

My, I had a few more in mind than I had originally thought:

The blow wasn't as bad in the Chobits anime, but in both anime and manga I was left really angry with the impossibly naive/incovenient resolution to the Hideki/Chii relationship.

Chrono and Rosette should have had a lot more time together (as a couple and onscreen) in Chrono Crusade.

I really wanted to see a definite hook-up between Akagi and Oyama (the long-haired secretary) in Dai-Guard. There was all this playfulness there, but no juicy dating antics or anything of the like. And I must admit, I would have liked to have seen something similar with the one almost-definite pairing at the end of that show, Aoyama and Chiaki (the girl with glasses). I remember just sitting there after it was all done and throwing my hands up at so many opportunities left unexplored.

The Devil Lady - See Chrono Crusade thoughts, only switch the names of the pair involved for Jun and Kasumi. /images/graemlins/cry00000.gif

Genshiken - Saki[/b] really needed to get with Madarame and forget that insensitive loser, Kohsaka.

Haibane Renmei could have used more Reki/Rakka togetherness, but I can see where that might have disturbed the mood of the show a bit.

Irresponsible Captain Tylor - Really, why Tylor and Yuriko? What the heck would she get out of this arrangement? Not much, if that one OVA episode is any sort of example.

Kiddy Grade - Forget the Eclair/Lumiere teasing; Dextera and Sinistra were more ripe for romance, or at least happy viewer slashing. I was totally annoyed by how the English script toned down the heat there. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif

If Yusaku had been in the Kimagure Orange Road films (or taken a courage pill during the course of the franchise), I wouldn't have minded some sort of scene that indicated Hikaru might give him a chance. Just a small one.

Patlabor - Absolutely no Noa/Asuma flirtations! I mean, just because they're the two youngest members of the team...sheesh. As others have mentioned, Goto/Shinobu might have been nice, but might not have afforded as much viewing pleasure or situational pay-offs.

If the Hachi/Tanabe relationship in Planetes hadn't been so rife with verbal abuse (on his end), I might have been more inclined to accept the fact that they might actually try dating, never mind ending up married and with a kid on the way. Maybe I just can't understand how anyone could fall for a guy like Hoshino.

Plastic Little - Again, another pair that should have had more time together before the separation plot twist of doom. Tita and Elise (who has, I swear, one of the prettiest names for an anime character).

Pretear - The Hayate/Himeno thing annoyed me from beginning to end. Very contrived, though lack of it would have destroyed like half of the "plot" out of this show.

Silly Princess Nine writers - Izumi and Ryo are so obviously the OTP!!!111. Much too much tension with no resolution in sight. Well, that and I have nothing against that Hiroki dude, other than he wasn't worth THAT much conflict and angst.

In Revolutionary Girl Utena, Anthy might've tried pouncing on that pink-haired bubblehead before she went and put a sword in her...and before Akio did his thing. /images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Sensitive Pornograph - Love Toy in the Closet was far too short!!

Steel Angel Kurumi - I didn't exactly expect Kurumi to return Saki's feelings, but why the heck did she end up in a nude embrace with that twelve-year-old boy?? It was always more fun to watch the dynamic before that, and through the OVAs. Come to think of it, I wish that, in Steel Angel Kurumi II, Uruka could have found herself interested in Saki, even a little bit, if she couldn't have Nako (and so poor Saki could have suffered a little less in this one).

Tenchi in Tokyo - I liked Sakuya well enough I think; she could have been brought back and somehow added to the current harem, or written in to live next door to it, or something. It's been awhile since I've watched/thought of this particular character.

Pairings I could've done without:
Bubblegum Crisis: Tokyo 2040 - I was actually surprised that Priss and Leon ended up together, given the copious amounts of subtext between that biker girl and Linna. More in the English script, now that I think about it. *Laughs*

Cardcaptor Sakura - Sakura and Syaoran. Argh. I didn't want either paired up with anyone in particular (I wasn't even in Tomoyo's corner here). I simply never cottoned to these two as the one true pairing.

Chrono and Rosette should have had a lot more time together (as a couple and onscreen) in Chrono Crusade.

Chobits - I never enjoyed these kind of stories. They're funny and charming, but it throws too much realism out the window. One of the very few "happy endings" I dispute. Might as well add the Pinocchio magic or something if they're already going that far fetched.

Chrono Crusade - Definitely. I felt the emotional connection but not a romantic one.

Haibane Renmei - LOL! That kind of relationship wasn't the intention of the show at all. =P

Tylor - I actually thought they made a cute couple. =/

KOR - I would have loved to see Yusaku at least in the movies. But it's like the writers completely forgot he existed!

Planetes - Now this one I'll have to disagree completely. I thought they had some great chemistry! I was honestly emotionally attached to both of them. They're both equally stubborn. /images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Pretear - See nothing wrong with this one either. lol

I'm going to go with a general answer on this one - any anime in which the main character takes a robot over a living, breathing human being.

Also, Happy Lesson - I haven't watched the next season, but I've heard that Chitose ends up with Mutsuki. What's up with that? The first season made Fumitsuki out to be pretty much his only real romantic option.

I figured somebody would mention Fruits Basket, but personally I like the way it's going simply because I find Kyo to be a more interesting character than Yuki. She's abusive; there's no reason why he should choose her over Tohru, especially since Tohru treats him better.

I don't think there was a "wrong" guy in peach girl! I would have been fine with either of them. Momo went with the one that needed her the most. Both guys loved her.

[/ QUOTE ]

I guess you're right that there's no "wrong" guy, but I was really pulling for the other guy since the end of volume 8 (or whichever volume the first arc ended on). I was pretty disappointed at the choice in the end, but you can't feel too bad for the guy that wasn't picked since Momo really wasn't such a great character herself.

[/ QUOTE ]

Exactly my feelings as well. I was rooting against the one she chose most of the way even though he wasn't a bad guy or anything.

The more notable ones that bother me:

Escaflowne: Yeah, so the power of their love saves their world, and then, she leaves to be with her family. What the hell!? Seriously, a great show but such a nonsensical ending

Revolutionary Girl Utena: Wakaba choosing Saionji over Tatsuya/The Onion Prince. It makes for some great scenes going forward but at the time it just feels so very wrong

Ceres, Celestial Legend: I am perhaps alone in this feeling but I always thought that (despite his problems) Aya should have chose Yuhi over Toya. Again, I understand that the plot couldn't go to the brutal places it does without this decision, but I still didn't like it.

Patlabor: I would have loved to see some more happen between Noa and Asuma (as well as Gotoh/Shinobu) but it could have messed up a lot about the series. That subtext is part of what made Patlabor a great TV show/OVA series

Gungrave: Seeing Maria and Brandon's love for each other being unfulfilled was heartbreaking. At least they could have had a fling before they were torn apart from each other

Its fated pairing originating from a childhood together. Thus an anime convention. But apart from that, they are both compatible in personality & both have a domestic mentality really.
That's the TV Akito. Yurika likes her command, but she'd be as happy at home with a family IMO.

The changed, PoD Akito is more likely to choose Ryoko - but perhaps he's too far gone for anyone then - turned into a loner
