Well, I guess I'll get the general discussion started:
For coaches, any regrets (picks you wish you could take back)? Any surprises (characters you thought should have been picked but weren't)?

I know I shouldn't really talk for Azumangaman, but I did make him cry when I pointed out Hero Sohma or Megumi Hanajima might have been a wiser pick then Vicious or Akito Sohma that he did have down. Its funny because I had a whole list of other youthful characters from other shows but he said he hadn't seen them. So being the evil person that I am I pointed out the Fruits Basket characters he would have seen as he did pick Yuki. Lets say he like a few others were hoping Youthful wouldn't show up.

I'm glad that the Rascal category wasn't one of the final four, as right after I picked him I wasn't too sure on Tylor's chances. I'm fairly pleased with my other choices, but my first choices for both youthful and ecchi were taken pretty early.

I really really wanted to pick either Envy or Wrath from FMA... both would have been solid choices IMO (Envy = psycho, rascal and Wrath = youthful, psycho, rascal). Greed could have fit a couple of categories too. I actually don't know why I didn't pick one of them, now that I think about it.
The psycho pick that occurred to me right after I selected Shishio was Orochimaru from Naruto. I think he would probably have done pretty well. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif
I regret not choosing a stronger ecchi character, but if not there, I imagine I would've ended up compromising in some other category. /images/graemlins/sweat000.gif

I thought about picking Akito Sohma as my psycho character but I thought there might be a possible backlash due to Akito ultimately being a female in the manga . I also thought about picking Ritsu as my bishonen, because I thought the Fruits Baskets characters might end a little more popular in the end.

To tell you the truth, I'm kind of disappointed the rascal wasn't chosen. I picked Takamura as my rascal pick and, although he probably wouldn't have been the strongest contender, I was interested to see how he would do. IIRC Ippo had a strong showing in the Anime draft earlier this year.

Ippo was drafted in the second round this last draft (2006). He was a round 10 pick in 2005. His early drafting in 2006 moved him into the Top 100 at #95 overall. Another year of early drafting for him will help to move him up the ladder in 2007. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif

I think my weakest choice was probably D. I kind of knew he would be a long shot when it came to getting votes, but I picked him anyway. I just like him as a character, and Vampire Hunter D was one of the first animes that I got when I first got into anime. So I guess I got a little nostalgic when I was choosing D for my team.
Unfortunately, it looks like I am going to pay for picking D since I'm getting my butt kicked in the first round. /images/graemlins/stunned0.gif

I think he did pick D for his bishonen from the start. I don't see snyone else on his roster that could fill the Bishonen role. Mugen would probably be the next closest for this role on his team, but I don't think he would work. Now if he had drafted Jin from Samurai Champloo and stuck him in the Bishonen slot, I think my match would be a lot closer. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif

Well, when I started thinking of Bishonen the first character that came to me was D. He seemed to fit archetype that Chimp1010 described, and he has that androgynous quality that some other Bishonens have. When I picked D I thought he was a good choice, but maybe I was wrong.
Oh well that's okay. As much as I picked characters that I thought would fit the archetypes and have a chance of winning, I also wanted to pick characters I personally like. I think D is an interesting character and I wanted him on my team.

I was considering Shaoran and Conan (as well as Killua & Gon from Hunter x Hunter). For me, though, my difficulty deciding on a youthful character stemmed from the fact that many anime characters who look youthful don't act or think like young boys. For instance, Conan has his kiddy moments, but it's hard to tell how voters will judge this sort of thing--would the fact that he has the mind of a brilliant seventeen-year-old detective set him at a disadvantage? The same basic principle applies to characters like Koenma and Loki. And Killua, for instance, may be a twelve-year-old, but he's also a ruthless assassin.
It would've been interesting to see how Alphonse might have done...

You are correct about D being my Bishonen pick. I was planning on using Mugen as my Rascal archetype if that came up. I thought about picking Jin for my team, but I already picked Mugen and I did not want two characters from the same show.

Despite the great start to this years BOS tourney, I'm always looking to the future. And one thing I thought about was how vicious this single elimination format is.
I was thinking of next time going to a round robin system. In it everyone character would get three games and the top three would go to the pool finals. It would go by record then points scored. It would also have the benfit of me only needing even number of teams rather then certain numbers to fill the brackets.
So what do you all think?

I debated about a lot of diffrent choices for the youthful type. But like you said a lot of young charcters act older and just don't fit youthful. I bounced all over from Hiro (Fruits Basket) and Ed(FMA) who were young but not young. Shin(Pretear) and rickert(Berserk) who I couldn't see being very popular. I even thought of Ryuichi (Gravatiaon) or Okita(Peacemaker) since they acted very youthful. It was a hard choice to make. I think that Momiji was one of the few characters that fit perfectly into this type.

I agree. Getting knocked out in the first round wouldn't be as brutal if there were only two rounds. Losing in round 1 makes you miss out on an additional 2 rounds of voting and can almost cripple your team if you get unfavorable match-ups.

Which was the reason Momiji was pretty much my only 'risk' pick - all my others fell into various categories, so you have no idea how relieved I was when youthful came up (though Naruto isn't an easy match)
Maybe, I regret going a bit more adventorous - I was thinking Happosai from Ranma as a pure ecchi pick, and Tamahome from Fushigi Yuugi as well to fit bishie. Other surprise ideas included Taro Yamada (Sister Princess) who could have fitted Rascal and even psycho to a little part.
The one I really wanted to add was Harima Kenji (school Rumble) just because he's my favourite male character in anime, but aside from cool, he was hard to stereotype....ah regrets...

Yup I knew that going in but at the time I was figuring out the other aspects to the tourney and stuck with my first thought on format. I did state that early on this game would be brutal. But when I had problems with signing up enough to fill the brackets and then watching World Cup, I final thought of pool play.
Well one thing is for sure, most of the teams will have to rely on each others teammates to keep them in it.
Just to let you all know I thinking of dropping the Best In Tourney grand final with all the archetype pool champions. Too many points being missed by at least eight teams if not more.
Oh and don't be surprised if a secret bonus contest to the BOS shows up. Its a little way for all the teams to rack up some extra points but it will have a little sense of humor to it as well.

I'm surprised that the link to the Psycho voting pool hasn't been put into the root post yet. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif The first two voting pools are there. I wonder if he is waiting until later when the Youthful voting pool starts tomorrow. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif
The link is up now. Where are the voters? /images/graemlins/stunned0.gif The first two archtype pools (Bishonen and Ecchi) seem to be peaking right now with about 35 - 40 voters in each battle and don't seem to be getting many more voters. Hopefully there will be some more voters show up this weekend. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif

Most of my guys are losing, but Desert Punk and Yoichi Hiruma are REALLY deserving (Yoichi's only 9 away!)
Arima could do it, but he's up against a maximum youthist.

Ok, here are my predictions for the Boys Of Summer tourney.
(From the way it looks of it, it's a 3 way battle at the end).
Bishonen:
Nuriko vs. Ayame vs. Yuki
(Ayame and Yuki will probably steal most of the votes)
Youthful:
Momiji vs. 2nd Place vs. Junior
(It'll really be between 2nd and Momiji-I think)
Ecchi:
Shigure (who's not even that Ecchi) vs. Onizuka vs. Kintaro Oe
(Between Shigure and Onizuka)
Psycho:
Dilandu vs. Dio vs. Jinnai
(between Dilandu and Dio)
I'm excited for this bonus round you speak of Chimp1010! It could actually give me a chance!

I'm kind of torn on the open polls thing. It's fun to keep track of the voting, but I don't like that you can view the results before you vote, because it'll sway some voters to vote one way instead of another. I know that's the purpose of the open polls, but still...
I guess, ultimately, it's all in good fun though.

No I think Desert Punk is losing because a lot of people haven't seen the show including me. Add to the fact that Shigure is a perv and we got ourselves a reason to vote for doggy-boy.
Its the same problem Jun is facing in that there are so few people that watch hentai. And if the opposition is known and has some inkling of the topic they win. Too much evidence of side characters pulling out wins for people to just be voting for popular characters.
As for the viewing the voting, well not many seem to have even noticed that feature. It's actually in place for you coaches to try to sabatoge the other teams, but I might take it out for the second round. Mostly because nobody even seems to notice it in the first place.

To compound on my problem, my Jun is also going up against the king of all male characters from the Anime Drafts in the GTO. I could have put someone else in there and maybe pick up a couple of more votes, but the result would still be a slaughtering by the GTO, which is what we have.
For open voting in the next round, just make it so the coaches and voters acutally have to vote before they can see what the results are for each match. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif

My predictions last time were a bit strange, so I'll make 2nd round predictions for Bishonen and Ecchi!
First up: Bishonen
2nd round matches:
Dark .vs. Nuriko
Verdict: A close one. Two good lookin' fellas. I'll give the nod to Nuriko (more popularity-and I like Nuriko more)!
Ayame .vs. Kurama
Verdict: People love Kurama. People love Ayame. This'll be really exciting. I'll vote for Kurama, because I personally would rather face him!
Howl .vs. Yuki
Verdict: Uhh...I really don't want to toot my own horn here, but if I pwned somebody from Utena, losing to Howl would be, odd.
Ecchi:
Shigure .vs. Miroku
Verdict: Shigure. 2 people I don't want to win (Shigure killed me, Miroku killed Kimura) but I think they're both pretty popular. Not sure who I'll vote for...
Roy .vs. Onizuka
Verdict: Sorry Roy, happy time's over.
Onizuka.will.own.the.Ecchi.category
(but I'll vote for the underdog!)
Kintaro .vs. Kurz
Verdict: No idea who either is, so I'LL probably abstain...The winner will be...Kintaro (because I said so).

Nuriko vs Sanzo = no contest, Nuriko owns Sanzo
But I felt strong with the other 3 matches even against Jinnai and Roy. To me, Jinnai is more retarded with his gay laugh than being pyshco, but nonetheless his pressence has been noted. As for Roy, I was actually happy to go against him, lol. That was a round I thought I would seal at least 1 win.

While I don't plan to change this tourney, I was wonder about the next. I sure when I go to the three game round robin play the polls will be shorten to 3 or 4 days.
I tend to like five because its easy to setup to run on the weekdays and into the weekend. This I found can leave the polls open for those that check in during most of the week.
But it seems that about 70% of the votes come in the first 48 hours.
So what lengths do you all think the polls should be?

Truthfully, I like having it stretched out a bit, because it's fun watching people agonize as those last few votes roll in... but whichever.

I find it interesting that the bishonen and ecchi 2nd round pools had approx 60 votes each and the psycho and youthful pools have approx 50. I wonder if those pools are just more popular or if it has to do with the timing of when the pools were started.

Okay I was thinking of implimating the same rule I have for the Diva Open here. That is past champions can't be drafted anymore. For the BOS that would mean the overall Pool winners can't be drafted again. Of course if there is a tie in a pool then there would be co-champions (since I'm not doing a mini-faces) so both would be out.
Now this could be a lifetime ban or just the next tourney. So whats all your thoughts?

I'm assuming you mean can't be drafted anymore. I like this idea. I think a lifetime ban might be a little too harsh, but a one year ban may not be long enough...maybe a 3 year ban? I think it'll make future drafts a little more interesting.

I agree with Lumberjack. A three year ban on pool winners sounds like it would work. Another question? If a pool winner is banned, would he only be banned from the pool that he was assigned to and won (i.e. I could draft a character again, but I could not assign him to the same archetype pool he won in), or would he be banned from all other archetype pools as well?

It would have to be a ban from the entire tourney since the pools will change in the future. Usaully this fact alone might have been enough to change the characters drafted but some very popular characters are also very well rounded.
So a three year ban huh? Well that seems fair enough.

No not yet I'm still wondering if that was a mistake. Anyhoo overall it was Kyo Sohma and he gaining 15pts with one poll win and a poll tie. Sanji straight up won a poll for 10pts and Kuhonbutsu Taishi got 5pts for a tie with Kyo.
I have the results recorded and will add them at the end of the tourney for two results. I figure that is fair enough so those that want to include them and those that don't. I mean I see this as a friendly game so even if my little wild idea was half baked it can be ingored if they want to. Especially if they do have a effect on the final results.

Okay now that the 2006 Boys of Summer tourney is over I will go over what I have down for the format in the next tourney.
All rules in red are subject to suggestion and most likely be put to a poll vote.
1. Announce players banned form being drafted (this would either be pool finalists for one tourney or pool champions for three tournies).
2. One week open sign up for up to 20 teams first date and time announce in advance for first come first in (need to be even number of coaches).
3. Announce six possible archetypes (to be determine by me with suggestions from the peanut gallery)
4. Determine draft order and set it up in snaking order (to be setup randomly by me).
5. Five rounds of drafting with each coach given 24 hours to pick (missed picks going to the penalty round at the end of the draft).
6. Once drafting is done reveal the four archetypes that will be used in the tourney.
7. All coaches will PM me which of their five players will go to which pool (all coaches given 48 hours to get their assignments in).
8. Going to pool play each player will have three contests 4 days long (contest will be open polls but voters must vote before seeing the results).
9. Points will be scored from the percentage of each poll they are in and added to their respective teams (There will no longer be any Mini Face Offs ties will be left ties).
10. The top scoring 3 or 4 players in each pool will go onto the pool finals (going by record, then points, then overall votes recieved).
11. Pool finals will be closed polls so no one will know the results until the poll is over (I will do them all at once)
Well that is all folks for now. I

Great tourney Chimp1010. It was a lot of fun, although it was unforgiving at times. (I am sure Team Gay Lords can attest to that./images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif) I also liked the smaller format. With fewer teams and characters to pick everything was able to progress at a nice speed.

Hmmmm, that would be interesting, but not until fall. Lets see any events being run around then?
I reason I did the BOS tourney in June/July was to fill an empty spot and spotlight some male anime stars. If I do a Girls League Championship Series it would have to fall somewhere it doesn't conflict with other established contests. Meaning it can't be during Anime Draft, BOS, Anime March Madness, Moe Invitational, or English VA Draft (spring or fall), or Diva Open.
Plus someone before the BOS tourney started suggested another game involving racing, a sorta Anime Grand Prix. Then there is the little fact that I really wanted to play as well. See if my skills were up to the task. Man it was hard trying to stay impartial and never reveal my votes.
Anyhoo thanks to all the coaches, voters and posters that made this first annual BOS a success. I hope next years games will be bigger and wilder then ever.
Oh and remember to check out the little format poll I will put up soon to decide the direction the 2007 Boys of Summer Tourney will head.
