View Full Version : Gundam ZZ - where to board?

Alrighty, I finished watching Zeta Gundam recently, and decided to go ahead and rent the first volume of Double Zeta the following week.

The show's reputation precedes it for me, but I was hoping it wouldn't be quite as bad as it indeed turned out to be (wacky hijinks...narcissistic bishie wannabe comparing his MS to a rose...Haman Kahn's awesomeness being diluted by the mere fact that he's working for her...(sigh)).

So anyway, I hear it gets better. Around what volume? And is there anything I need to know by that point that was buried in the mush that came before?

For me, the show finally changed around episodes 20-21.

Thanks; that's good to know!

I like it all, but for 2 events. Rasara getting killed needlessly & Judeau joining AEUG at the end.

The first part is fun because its lighter & slightly self-parodying.

I think it drops the overdone comedy angle a little earlier then that. As I recall it starts to resemble the UC saga more closely after the episodes where a *ahem* jungle tribe living on a remote colony worship the ZZGD as a god... *sigh*

That was the absolute lowest point in the series for me, it was so bad that I stopped watching and it was almost two years later before someone wrote something much like this and convinced me to pick it up again.

SEED is one of the alternate universes, and it has its own sequel (with a second in production). It does not require any prior knowlwdge of the Gundamverse. If you're looking to pick it up, it's a perfectly safe starting point.

Hee, hee! Sounds like I've hit UC Gundam's "Island Episodes", then, as it were /images/graemlins/happy.gif

Colony of Illusion is the worst Gundam anything. It makes G Savior look like a masterpiece.

Can the one episode be skipped? (Assuming we get the series over here, as I won't see it in any other way)

All of Gundam ZZ 1-19 can be skipped. The two-part Colony of Illusion does introduce a character of some importance in the second half of the series.

Now come on. the colony was only a two-parter. How many episodes do they spend in that damned junkyard? Far far worse.

I think you're missing the point, if you're referring to Shangri-La colony. Judeau & his friends survive there from the salvage business of war debris. Judeau pays for his sister Reina's education & looks after her using his share. The kids don't care whose side the salvage comes from, just that its potential income & keeps them fed & clothed. No high principles as Amauro & Camille get stuck with.

This is their background, & why Judeau has little respect for the military & authority in general. He's a survivor living on his wits from the wreckage humankind creates fighting each other. As the series progresses, he gets angry at what he sees & then when Reina is kidnapped, he becomes vengeful - but always a loner. Which is why his decision at the end is so odd IMO.

I'm not a Gundam UC purist, & enjoy all ZZ as lighter relief after the holocaust of Zeta. Apart from the 2 instances in my earlier post.
Judeau (& the guy in MS08th) are the best UC heroes IMO.

Not missing the point at all. Those who slag off that two-parter miss the point that the junkyard episodes drag on for far too long. Completely agree that around episode 18 or 19 it picks up a lot and feels like the sequel to Zeta. Dips again near the end, then pulls it all together for the finale.

I don't miss the point that the Junkyard episodes last too long; the whole first 19 episodes of Gundam ZZ is shit!
