View Full Version : "Tricks of the anime trade"?

After following two relatively popular shows this season, Fate and Haruhi, I noticed that you would see some of the same animation "tricks" between the two shows. For example the shots where they zoom in on a characters face so you can see both eyes, and put the character the other person is talking to in their eyes, as a reflection. The same can be said for shows like Canvas and others, when they seemed to put in the famous "Yurie scowl" from one of the first episodes of Kamichu.

While I like the little moments where you can tell that the animators were going for a "trick" if you will, I started to think about different times I've seen this in shows. Cowboy Bebop is a good example of this. At times the camera will go first person where you get to see what Spike sees, and it moves that way. They're just little things that draw you into the show more, or make you go "hmm, that was neat".

So I got to thinking, what other shows have little "trick shots" like the ones mentioned above?

Hmmm... I know what you mean, but I'm having trouble actually thinking of anything in particular.

I honestly can't name where these have been used, but I like when the use of camera focus is used well. A real sense of depth of field can add a nice feel to a shot.

Yeh. FLCL seemed to be a "lets try this" type of show for Gainax heh. There are a bunch of nice little shots in their.

Thinking about other series with "Trick shots", I had to go with GITS SAC. My favorite of these shots has to be from episode 22 or 23 of the first season. It's when Motoko and Batou are in the hotel/building trying to get the guy out. Batou takes the guy, and Motoko stays to battle the mech. The whole scene where shes running down the hallway then just kind of flips into a room, that was a great little "check this out" shot for me.

I've actually had fun today going back and looking at series for these "trick shots" heh.

My best for this thread is from Bebop. The bloodiest and most violent scene is done in semi-slow motion and to the lovliest music of the entire show. If this were a Clint Eastwood movie they would have punched up the action way over the top. I think this is one good piece of film making art.
