I'm always looking out for new or already released anime series that I haven't seen yet that I might enjoy. So, I thought that if some other people posted their favorite top 10 anime series, we could compare what we like to what other people like and possibly find out about some other series that we might like (hope that makes sense). So, here is my top 10.

1. Cowboy Bebop
2. Fighting Spirit (Hajime no Ippo)
3. GTO
4. Last Exile
5. Fullmetal Alchemist
6. FLCL
7. Planetes
8. Azumanga Daioh
9. Kino's Journey
10. Fantastic Children

Honorable Mentions: Fruits Basket, Haibane Renmei, Paranoia Agent

05. Berserk
06. The Vision of Escaflowne
07. Trigun

People's tastes change as does the overall number of shows they've seen. Add to that the new people that come to the forum every year and I'd wager each year's lists could be quite different.

One that seems to pop up on most lists is Cowboy Bebop. It'd be interesting to see what percentage of responses have that somewhere on the list.

I'll hold off an "official list" until I see the last two episodes of Haruhi, but that will likely be the new #1. Really, only the third show ever to enjoy those honors from me. It was Lain from the start of my fandom until Scrapped Princess aired, and then it's been that until now with Haruhi.

So, I suppose a temporary list (haven't revamped this in awhile) would be:

Favorite Shows

01) The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi
02) Scrapped Princess
03) Serial Experiments: Lain
04) Azumanga Daioh
05) My~Otome
06) My~HiME
07) Martian Successor Nadesico
08) Kare Kano
09) Uchuu no Stellvia
10) Full Moon wo Sagashite

This time Crest/Banner of the Stars took the bump, even thought it was previously #7. In retrospect it just doesn't have as much of a lasting impact on me as the shows listed before or after it, even if it is an amazing series. HiME and Nadesico swap as well. I'm actually pretty close to putting Otome/HiME at #4/#5 and Azumanga at #6, but Osaka compels me not to, at least not yet.

Here are mine:

1. Fruits Basket
2. Descendants of Darkness
3. Gravitation
4. Fullmetal Alchemist
4. Pretear
5. Wedding Peach
6. Saiyuki
7. Marmalade Boy
8. DN Angel
9. Loveless
10. Sailor Moon

It changes all the time, though.

TheGreenMan

I guess mine would be:

1. Haibane Renmei
2. FLCL
3. Serial Experiments: Lain
4. Ah! My Goddess (TV, OVA)
5. Figure 17
6. Maria-sama ga Miteru
7. Honey & Clover
8. Scrapped Princess
9. Rozen Maiden
10. Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya

If this list was a little longer, I'd include School Rumble, Kannazuki no Miko, Boys Over Flowers, Kimagure Orange Road, Fruits Basket (#11-I'm a heretic!), R.O.D. (TV and OVA), Utena, Kare Kano, Super GALS!, and Sailor Moon.

Edits: added more anime, removed a line.

Having wrapped up a couple of series today and certain series I'm watching about to wrap up in a matter of days or just a few weeks. I may have a lot of competition to consider in terms of a new top ten. Heck I've been having trouble deciding what to include in the list.

Some series are an easy choice to include. After all my list is destined to include "Shrine of the Morning Mist". Also some recent favorites have come up such as Happy 7 the TV Manga. So they'll definitely make the list. It's the stuff in between that's the problem. I'm plagued by multiple problem.

First is I end up removing one title for the sake of another title only to remove yet another title for the sake of the title I removed... Second is I need a refresher course on a lot of series. Third I keep wondering if I'm only including some series because of nostalgia. Finally I have to wonder if for some series the "wow factor" still needs to wear off.

Err I'll think of some list eventually. Heck there are times I'm tempted to list both My-HiME and My-Otome together since I feel a lot of the enjoyment from My-Otome came from having watched My-HiME. Plus well it would help me cheat that's why. Heck for certain I'd group "seasons" together.

02.) Elfen Lied
03.) Alien Nine
04.) Cardcaptor Sakura
05.) Sugar: A Little Snow Fairy
06.) Tenchi Muyo! (OAV)
07.) Angelic Layer
08.) Serial Experiments Lain
09.) Digimon Tamers

I have a few series that I'll be starting or finishing within months and I expect that my current 9th and 10th favorites will be replaced after that. If Higurashi no Naku Koro ni keeps up it's awesomeness, it'll likely be getting a spot somewhere in my top 5.

Brad's threads were purposely an annual event, cataloguing (at least for the four years he ran it) how people's tastes changed year by year. And seeing which was the most popular title on the forums year by year. And I think they usually kicked off in late May or June, running through the summer.

I don't see why this isn't--or can't be--the same thing. Of course, it doesn't need to be, either, if making it more "formal" takes the spontaneous fun out of it. But if someone really wants to make it similar, with an overall favorite list, they'd have to assign points and keep track. Heck, here are the abbreviated guidelines Brad had for his version, which split movies off from TV/OVA, and which certainly can be changed:

[ QUOTE ]
* Simply choose your top 10 TV/OAV anime series and your top 5 anime movies.
* Rank your shows if you choose... 10 points for 1st on down to 1 point for 10th.
* Movies are a little different. 5 points for 1st and 1 point for 5th.
* Don't rank your picks and each show gets 5.5 points. Each movie gets 3 points.
* No ties are allowed if you're ranking. And if you cut your list short, you'll simply be losing out on points.
* You can make changes to your list... but you'll need to make a new post or trigger the 'edited by' button or they may not be counted

[/ QUOTE ]

Well, whoever does it should probably have some idea of how to do it in a spreadsheet, since that's what B-rad did I believe. Without a tool like that the task would likely become cumbersome. But anyways, my list:

1. Revolutionary Girl Utena
2. Urusei Yatsura
3. Fruits Basket
4. Patlabor TV/OAV
5. Giant Robo
6. Escaflowne
7. His & Her Circumstances
8. Haibane Renmei
9. RahXephon
10. Full Metal Alchemist

My top 5 are pretty solid but the bottom five fluxuate a lot depending on mood, and how good FMA has been has rearranged things somewhat as well.

Yeah, IF I do it, I'd keep it pretty similar, the only real change probably being merging the movies and TV, just for laziness, and to see where they actually hold up. (And does anyone remember if things like FMP were seperated from Fumoffu and TSR, or was it a big merge?)

Wow that took forever. Yes I went over board and I don't care. The first list is the actual Top Ten. The second list is for the honorable titles. The third and final list is for series I have to finish, but have definite potential. Some obviously because they are still airing. Maybe later if I'm feeling up to it, I'll actually order the three lists, but I had enough of a headache making the lists in the first place. In other words don't hold your breath.

Top Ten
Shrine of the Morning Mist
Happy 7 the TV Manga
Mao-Chan
My-HiME/My Otome
Strawberry Marshmallow
Scrapped Princess
Sugar: A little Snow Fairy
Bottle Fairy
Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha/Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha As
Kanon

Honorable Ten
Ragnarok the Animation
Shuffle
Rozen Maiden/Rozen Maiden Traumend
Binchoutan
Rakugo Tennyo Oyui
Yoshinaga-san chi no Gargoyle
Pani Poni Dash
Azumanga Daoh
Petepetosan
Maharoba Heartful Days

Potential Ten
Sasami Magical Girl Club
Utawarerumono
Kasimasi: Girl meets Girl
Zegapain
Ouran High School Host Club
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
Aria the Animation/Natural (Yes I'm counting them together)

Yeah and in the end I grouped My-HiME and My-Otome together. After all part of the enjoyment of Otome comes from HiME for me. Plus I realized they were sort of leeching off each other. I couldn't add one without wanting to add the other. I couldn't remove one without feeling wrong about keeping the other. Thus the logical conclusion was to put them together.

At least I finally finished deciding. I used various means to decide what titles to drop from the list(s). Some because I need a refresher course. Others because I'm so close to finishing them that it's a waste of time putting them in the "potential list". Soul Link with only one episode left for me to view is a good example. Not that it matters, I'm inclined to hold off on making any future changes for awhile.

They were separate. It was the idea that franchises that had the same continuity could be lumped together as one entry in the top ten list, otherwise not. Examples were: Kenshin TV and OVAs; Full Metal Panic! and FMP! Fumoffu; and each of the Tenchi series would all be distinct from one another, while things like Crest of the Stars/Banner of the Stars and the three Slayers seasons could be considered lumped together.

But obviously your choice if you sacrifice yourself for the sake of tabulating all this. /images/graemlins/wink.gif

Last year's top 25 is still in the post, but if I wind up doing this, I would like 2004 and back to help trace the patterns. I'll probably just keep that the same, then, to make tracing easier. (Of course, then for series I've not seen yet, I'd have to discern. I'm more a fan of merging, so that, in the case of FMP, it doesn't dominate someone's list. I don't really remember that happening, though...)

And that reminds me... I need to make another post...

Hmm.. I guess my list would be:

1. Magic User's Club (Mahou Tsukai Tai!)
2. Princess Tutu
3. Magical Project S (Magical Girl Pretty Sammy TV)
4. Cardcaptor Sakura
5. Rozen Maiden
6. Mahoraba Heartful Days
7. Tenchi Muyo! OVA
8. Super GALS!
9. Hand Maid May
10. Angelic Layer

Some in the middle are a little pretentious (have the ability to be higher or lower) as I don't know how they (Rozen Maiden and Mahoraba) will hold up on rewatch. It may be some time, since I want to wait on them being licensed and released R1-side before watching them again. 10 is a pretentious slot as well, as there are several others I think of for it. With movies I can't really think of an order now. Need to rewatch some of them.

[/ QUOTE ]

I only have last year's threads (four total over the course of the event), but Brad probably has the previous three years' results. If you can get a hold of him.

And my offer above was more for each individual list people made, especially if they were posted in the now non-existent three previous 2005 threads, if they can't remember what they did or did not have last year. Looking at my own I'm up for some hard decision making since things have changed, especially after the big CCS marathon discussion from last Fall...

He up and vanished right after he posted his cast for the VA Draft over in Engilsh Track (back sometime in May) and hasn't been seen here since. I do wish he would come back. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif

[/ QUOTE ]

I think Brad vanished shortly after the "coup d'etat" that took away his role as maintainer of the "Monthly English Dub Award" thread. It was rather unusual to see someone being asked to stop and voted off from maintaining a thread. From what I'm used to seeing here, it was usually a person getting tired of maintaining a thread (or not having time) and volunteers to quit.

Here is my top ten:
1. Fighting Spirit
2. Berserk
3. Martian Successor Nadesico
4. Irresponsible Captain Tylor
5. Midori Days
6. Gungrave
7. Psychic Academy
8. City Hunter
9. Super GALS!
10. Shingu: Secret of the Stellar Wars

The first six are pretty cemented in place, the last four were a big competition with GTO, Slam Dunk and Air Master barely losing out. Currently watching Princess Tutu, and it looks like it will be guaranteed a place by the time it's all done.

I was going to compare with last years, but apparently I didn't participate, and I'm too lazy to search up year 3. I know the top 5 have been the same for a long while - Midori is the newest addition, and Nadesico and Tylor have been there for 6+ years. Sometimes I feel like I'm keeping them there almost like a legacy despite how they stack up against newer shows - but then I rewatch a bit of them, and it all comes back to me.

And as a side note, has anyone else tried guessing who is posting just by reading their top 10? I managed to guess two or three people correctly.

Miku barely beats out Gravion for my 'Mindless Guilty Pleasure' slot. Outlaw Star could easily have been replaced by GTO or BAV. I've only seen the disks that have been released for Fighting Spirit and Slam Dunk, everything else I've seen complete. Shingu will probably be on this list next year.

It's always traumatic if I see what I have to leave out. I mean, there should be more places in a top 10. I'd need at least 25 to include all the series I love very much. I mean, now I don't have room for R.O.D TV, Haibane Renmei, Ghost in the Shell: SAC, Trigun, Wolf's Rain, Samurai Champloo, Haru o daite ita, etc, etc.

3. Gungrave
4. Vandread
5. Ai Yori Aoshi
6. R.O.D. the TV
7. Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha
8. School Rumble
9. Planetes

6. Fruits Basket
7. Mobile Suit Gundam SEED
8. Cowboy Bebop

Gravitation
Kaleido Star
The Irresponsible Captain Tylor
Fushigi Yuugi
Pokemon. When it is good, not when it's suck.

Now and Then, Here and There
Gundam Wing
Sailor Moon
Sorceror On the Rocks

Potential Top-Ten members in the future:
Kyo Kara Maoh *haven't seen all of it* Gotta have my queers.
Revolutionary Girl Utena (seems right up my alley)
Requim from the Darkness (first disk= ooooooooooooooohhhhh)
Record of Lodoss War (not seen any as I still need the first part, but hear it's excellent)
Ranma 1/2 (seen just barely less than half)
Dragonball (those first thirteen episodes, despite being edited, are excellent fun)
Haibane Renmei (only seen a quarter, but it's so cute)
Kodocha (only seen a quarter)
Gankutsou - Liked the novel, and liked the first three episodes. If it shapes up to be as good as it seems it will be, then it's got great chances with me.

Saint Tail
Tenchi Muyo! OVA

Been a while since I've done one of these...

NOTE: These do not include series I haven't finished yet. So series that could easily end up in the top10 (Haruhi, School Rumble, Eeyeshield 21, Strawberry Panic, Kodocha) won't be in there until I've seen the entire show.

So my current top 10 is...

1) Kaleido Star
2) Princess Nine
3) Princess Tutu
4) Martian Successor Nadesico
5) Kino's Journey
6) Full Moon wo Sagashite
7) Read or Die TV
8) Cardcaptor Sakura

Sticking to series, there would be the seven in my sig (in no particular order, because ranking them would just be too hard):

1. Noir
2. Serial Experiments Lain
3. Neon Genesis Evangelion
4. Kino's Journey
5. NieA Under 7
6. His and Her Circumstances
7. Gunslinger Girl

And I'll round out the list with the first three other faves to come to mind:

8. Boogiepop Phantom
9. Berserk
10. GTO

A number of other shows might also be candidates for those latter slots, though.

1. Twelve Kingdoms
- One Piece (sucks that there's no uncut bilingual dvd release for this)
- GitS: SAC/2nd Gig
- Bleach
- Beck
- School Rumble
- FMP: Fumoffu/TSR
- Fullmetal Alchemist
- Nadesico (Wish the recent remaster was somehow released over here)
- Kurau: Phantom Memory (ADV, why isn't this title released yet??)

12K is the only one on the list with a set order, as I can't see it being anything other than number 1. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif I just rewatched the whole thing a few days ago and everything still holds up and I remembered exactly why I love it so much. I'm kinda surprised it's on so few lists here.

I've been really enjoying Haruhi (both of them) and Blood+ so I'd imagine they'd be cracking the top 10 at some point. I'll just have to pull my hair out trying to decide what to take off from my current list. /images/graemlins/depresse.gif

I'm so bad at these, but here's what I THINK are my Top 10 series (I don't like movies that much...)

1. Escaflowne
2. Earth Girl Arjuna
3. Noein - Mou Hitori no Kimi e
4. Now and Then, Here and There
5. Fantastic Children
6. RahXephon
7. His and Her Circumstances
8. Witch Hunter Robin
9. X
10. Honey and Clover

I don't even think this is right, but I change my mind on a fairly regular basis anyway. I don't even pretend some of these series are all that great *cough*Arjuna*cough* but I love them anyway...

Cyber City Oedo 808
Escaflowne
Samurai Champloo

Full Metal Panic(If only for Second Raid)
Fullmetal Alchemist

I could come up with a completely different list tomorrow, but today my top 10 are:

Urusei Yatsura: Beautiful Dreamer (arguably best Oshii film)

Whisper of the Heart (favorite Ghibli film)

Princess Tutu (the quintessential magical girl show)

Fighting Spirit (hella fun & funny sports, and characters you love and root for. Who knew?)

Hikaru no Go (I want a go set, preferably haunted. Now, please. Lots of fun, and great characters)

Planetes (best sci-fi in years)

Gankutsuou (unique)

Mushishi (beautiful & haunting)

Ouran High School Host Club (best comedy in years)

Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu (best anime tv series and just all-around "what the heck did I just watch and where can I get more? in years. Honestly, it had me just from the OP/ED)

1. Neon Genesis Evangelion
2. Cowboy Bebop
3. Revolutionary Girl Utena
4. Vision of Escaflowne
5. Ranma 1/2
6. Urusei Yatsura
7. Dragonball Saga
8. Slayers Saga
9. Yu Yu Hakusho
10. One Piece (original Japanese version please)

Note: In any case Bleach or Naruto could easily "sneak" into the top 10 but since both those series are heavy in filler-ville I decline at present.

Rurouni Kenshin OVAs (Trust/Betrayal)

Hmmm, it's been a while since I've attempted at a list. This will be tough...

1) FLCL
2) Azumanga Daioh
3) Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu
4) Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
5) Haibane Renmei
6) Samurai Champloo
7) Mai-Otome (/ Mai-Hime)
8) Fullmetal Alchemist
9) Bubblegum Crisis 2040
0) Cowboy Bebop

Honorable mentions – I hate to cut them, but there’s just not enough room /images/graemlins/sad.gif
Slayers
Trigun
Lain
Outlaw Star
Patlabor
Galaxy Angel
Gunslinger Girl
MS Gundam 08th Team
School Rumble
Escaflowne
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Ranma 1/2
Bleach (up until the filler anyways)
Crest / Banner of the Stars

I better stop myself now, or else I’ll be agonizing over this for a while :p

Random notes:
Depending on how it ends up, I can see Haruhi easily overtaking AzuDai for my #2 spot, but I’ll leave it as is until I’ve seen it through, simply due to the raw number of repeat views AzuDai has endured. FLCL is probably stuck at #1 for good though. I lumped Mai-Hime in with My-Otome for space and completeness. Mai-Hime by itself probably wouldn’t make my top ten, but Otome is too good to pass up.

This looks fairly similar to what goes on in the Rec forum every year or so. What I wouldn't mind seeing is a twist, like "Top Ten Favorite Episodes". It'd be kind of interesting to see if some of the hated series get some credit for having a good episode or so before falling apart.

Yeah, it... sort of moved over here after B-Rad's disappearance from the forums. Nothing's official yet, because I want to see if someone else wants to do this before I start tallying, because I don't want to take it from someone who wants to do it. (Not that I DON'T want to do it, because I love numbers and their crunching, and I can see where all the series fall, even the one at #106.)

The only slight problem with using this thread is that not everyone numbered their list. I'm not sure how you were planning on tallying, but I'm assuming that the points would be weighted (i.e. a series at #1 on someone's list would be scored higher that a series at #10). If we wanted to compile some type of official list, perhaps we should start over?

Well, not everyone numbered in the official one, either. I'd hold to the same scoring procedure that B-Rad had: un-numbered lists are given 5.5 points each title.

Plus, knowing me and my memory, I'd just mark this thread as kept, add to my favorite threads (so I can always find it), tally it up, and if someone wants to change, it's easy enough to find their list.

Yeah I guess you can tally it up for shits and giggles, but not only are some not numbered but some are not including movies and ovas while other do. If someone really wants a favorites list I would be wiser to start a new list and setup a few caveats just to attempt to get everyone on the same page.

I'm sure my list is way different than last years so here goes:

1- PLANETES
2- Last Exile
3- Haibane-Renmai
4- Azumanga Daioh
5- Galaxy Angel
6- Metropolis
7- Saikano
8- Full Metal Panic
9- Hand Maid May
10- Chobits

7 through 10 may be switched around if I thought it out more, but that's where they stand atm.

Honorable mentions:

Ai Yori Aoshi
R.O.D. the TV
Mahoromatic
Card Captor Sakura

Yeah, it... sort of moved over here after B-Rad's disappearance from the forums. Nothing's official yet, because I want to see if someone else wants to do this before I start tallying, because I don't want to take it from someone who wants to do it. (Not that I DON'T want to do it, because I love numbers and their crunching, and I can see where all the series fall, even the one at #106.)

[/ QUOTE ]

The only slight problem with using this thread is that not everyone numbered their list. I'm not sure how you were planning on tallying, but I'm assuming that the points would be weighted (i.e. a series at #1 on someone's list would be scored higher that a series at #10). If we wanted to compile some type of official list, perhaps we should start over?

[/ QUOTE ]

Well, not everyone numbered in the official one, either. I'd hold to the same scoring procedure that B-Rad had: un-numbered lists are given 5.5 points each title.

Plus, knowing me and my memory, I'd just mark this thread as kept, add to my favorite threads (so I can always find it), tally it up, and if someone wants to change, it's easy enough to find their list.

[/ QUOTE ]

Yeah I guess you can tally it up for shits and giggles, but not only are some not numbered but some are not including movies and ovas while other do. If someone really wants a favorites list I would be wiser to start a new list and setup a few caveats just to attempt to get everyone on the same page.

[/ QUOTE ]

True, that probably would work better. I'll leave this for a day or 2, and if nobody else steps up, I'll start a new thread for offical tracking. Or should I just go ahead and start it?

As for the people not listing movies, that category did have fewer entries than series. However, my laziness would merge them all into 1 cluster, so I guess that I would have a lot of changes to do once I say that, anyway...

I'd say make the new thread. It'll make things easier.
Also for a new thread, a good requirement would to have people talk about each title on their list.

I don't think it should be a requirement. We want as many submissions as possible to get a more representative tally. Putting restrictions on it by making it harder and more time consuming to contribute is counterproductive, I think. It also makes dunno's job harder if he has to pick out the titles from blocks of text.

People should certainly be able to comment if they wish, but keeping it simple is best. If they really want to talk about a series, it can get its own thread.

Okay, I'll do that tomorrow night, since I'm getting ready for bed now. I'll do it myself, though, since I want it to be clear that this thread will not be checked, and that it'll all be merged into a big list, not with movies seperate.

Ahh... the memories... /images/graemlins/happy.gif I think that one was decently successful, so might think about doing another magical girl series-themed discussion topic.

Okay, I mentioned tracking this, so I've started a new thread for it. If you've posted here, you may want to post your list over here (http://forums.animeondvd.com/showflat.php?Cat=&Number=1375439&page=0&view=colla psed&sb=5&o=2&fpart=1), as I'm not logging this thread.
