View Full Version : Favourite Anime Tomboys

We have a MILF threat but, of course, tomboys are much better /images/graemlins/shy00000.gif
So, who are your favourite anime tomboys and what series are they from? Pics welcome too! /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif (FWIW I'm defining tomboy as any female character that posesses stereotypically male traits - they may fight, be competitive, dress like guys etc. I would also not consider girls like those from Madlax and Noir to be true tomboys because, although they are deadly assassins, they are all pretty feminine characters)

Tomo-chan (http://img93.imageshack.us/img93/2149/tomo6zi.jpg) (Azumanga Daioh)
Kagura (http://img231.imageshack.us/img231/9343/kagura0jq.jpg) (Azumanga Daioh)
Kei (http://img154.imageshack.us/img154/197/kei12hx.jpg) (Dirty Pair)
Cisqua (http://img154.imageshack.us/img154/6622/cisqua4ma.jpg) (Elemental Gelade)
Rosette (http://img231.imageshack.us/img231/9831/rosettesm7we.jpg) (Chrono Crusade)
Kyoko (http://img154.imageshack.us/img154/2165/kyoko3ri.jpg) (Initial D)
Winry Rockbell (http://img135.imageshack.us/img135/9076/winry6kl.jpg) (Fullmetal Alchemist)
Cagalli (http://img231.imageshack.us/img231/4290/cagalli7bl.jpg) (Gundam SEED/Destiny)
Priss (http://img231.imageshack.us/img231/4404/priss02c3sn.jpg) (Bubblegum Crisis/Crash)
Motoko Kusanagi (http://img231.imageshack.us/img231/8/motoko6dv.jpg) (Ghost in the Shell)
Noah (Patlabor)
Asuka (http://img231.imageshack.us/img231/7174/asuka019ix.jpg) (Evangelion)
Hitomi (http://img164.imageshack.us/img164/3563/hitomi6nl.jpg) (Escaflowne)
Cutie Honey (http://img139.imageshack.us/img139/9537/cutie4ty.jpg)
Rukia (http://img139.imageshack.us/img139/5599/rukia9me.jpg) (Bleach)
Sakura (http://img139.imageshack.us/img139/7906/sakura4jz.jpg) (Naruto)
Ayane (http://img231.imageshack.us/img231/4210/ayane5sa.jpg) (Ayane's High Kick)
Yohko (http://img139.imageshack.us/img139/7802/yohko95wg.jpg) (Devil Hunter Yohko)
Honoka (http://img139.imageshack.us/img139/4290/third414gw.jpg) (The Third)

My favorites would probably be
Casca (Berserk)
Integra (Hellsing)
Utena (Revolutionary Girl Utena)

Yay, tomboys! /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif

My personal faves include:

Cagalli (Gundam SEED)
Setsuna Sakurazaki (Negima!)
Melissa Mao (Full Metal Panic!)

Of course, of all the choices out there, I had to pick these three. One's taken, the second one <span style='color:#dddddd;background:#dddddd'> appears to be in love with another girl</span>, and the third can be a tad... scary.

...Did I mention that I love tomboys? So unpredictable sometimes...

For me, it's gotta be Yamamoto Yohko.

Re: the original post, I'm also a big fan of Asuka from Eva, but I don't think of her as a tomboy. Despite her aggressive personality, she strikes me as too feminine in appearance, and far too conscious of her femininity and desirability, to be a true tomboy.

My two personal favourites are Ichino Yanagida from Battle Athletes Victory and Riku Harada from D N Angel with Mamoru from Sister Princess not too far behind.

Ichino (ICCHAN!) is a typical Osakan tomboy but is so over the top and hilarious at times I LOL every time I see her. But you get to see her tender side with Akari, and of course, her relationship with Kris at the end is the best - tug o war with the Cosmo Beauty...

Riku is another fave mainly because she is the opposite of Risa despite being twins, it makes for very fun conversation and her not so subtle crush in the show is great. She benefits actually when anime only character Mio turns up as they have a bit of a good banter to say the least...

Mamoru I just remembered - she's so genki and energetic and as Kira Vincent Davis commented, the Sporty Spice of the group - she's just an enjoyable character.

Yeah, there were a couple (Asuka and Rukia mainly) that I didn't know whether to include or not.
I mean with Rukia, she has definite tomboy streaks but can also be quite feminine too (like when around Byakuya for example and the way she speaks, acts and so on).

Hmm . . . Which ones should I pick? Or, more accurately, how much should I limit my list? I've always loved tomboys, though it's sometimes hard to define exactly who is and is not a tomboy.

Tamayo Kizaki (Angelic Layer)
Kagura (Azumanga Daioh)
Koume Sawaguchi (Blue Seed)
Yuki Aoyama (Chance Pop Session)
Shayla-Shayla (El Hazard)
Arisa "Uo-chan" Uotani (Fruits Basket)
Kirie Kojima (Girls Bravo)
Shigeru Ookawahara (Hana Yori Dango)
Himeko Nonohara (Hime-chan's Ribbon)
Miyuki Sakura (Mahoromatic)
Tomomi Matsunaga (Miracle Girls)
Ryouko Subaru (Nadesico)
Nanappe (Nana 7 of 7)
Miina Miyafuuji (Onegai Twins)
Yuuki Matsubara (Piano)
Seira Morimura (Princess Nine)
Hikaru Shidou (Rayearth)
Misao Makimachi (Rurouni Kenshin)

The redhead (MS08th Gundam)
Misao (Rurouni Kenshin)

Heh, that's a great list for me to research because I've seen very few, if any, of those series /images/graemlins/happy.gif

Puppet Master

Too lazy to think now so I'll just list the first one that came to mind.

Saber (Fate/Stay Night)

bctaris
06-26-2006, 01:18 PM
Besides liking quite a few already mentioned (like Noa, Tomo and Ryuunosuke to repeat three), I'll toss out a few people have neglected:

Leona Ozaki (Dominion)
Chiaki Komatsu (NieA_7)
Mayumi Kino (Blue Submarine No. 6)
Lavie Head (Last Exile)
Nanaka Nakatomi (Magic Users Club)
Lu Amano (Miami Guns)
<span style='color:#dddddd;background:#dddddd'>Kino</span> (Kino's Journey)

And why not Nausicaa (Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind) while I'm on it.

And a couple kids:

Anita King (R.O.D. the TV)
Kosuna (Desert Punk)

If we're just including girls who fit the superficial image (short hair, etc.) but who aren't exactly precociously boyish this list could be a lot longer...

Akane Tendo (Ranma 1/2)

EmperorBrandon
06-26-2006, 01:36 PM
Tomo Takino (Azumanga Daioh)
Riku Harada (D.N.Angel)
Kasumi Tani (Hand Maid May)

and likely some others, too. Depends on who we wanted to count as a tomboy...

Lego
06-26-2006, 02:27 PM
I seem to like tomboyish characters, due to most of them being more interesting. Some of the characters I'll mention might not fight Johnny's description, but I consider them tomboys.

Haruka Suzushiro (http://img365.imageshack.us/img365/6715/baseharuka10xr.gif) (Mai Hime/Otome)
Fee Carmichael (http://img265.imageshack.us/img265/3214/planetes287lm.jpg) (Planetes)
Meia Gisborn (http://img272.imageshack.us/img272/6007/image27meiagisborn3kw.jpg) (Vandread)
Haruko Haruhara (http://img274.imageshack.us/img274/4526/haruko4cf.jpg) (FLCL)
Anita King (http://img59.imageshack.us/img59/4928/anitaking120hh.jpg) (ROD TV)
Sakaki (http://img162.imageshack.us/img162/350/sakaki3ep.jpg) (Azumanga)
Mitsue Shijou (Kamichu)
Revy (http://img162.imageshack.us/my.php?image=blklgn12139jt.jpg) (Black Lagoon)

Those are it for now, as I can list a lot more. But those are the ones that come to mind(at least to me) when I think of a tomboy character.

Darkseid
06-26-2006, 02:32 PM
Um.... Ed from Cowboy Bebop? *shrug*

Lego
06-26-2006, 02:39 PM
True, Ed can be considered a tomboy, and she is one. But I don't automatically think of Ed heh. I listed the ones that if someone asked me "what female anime characters are tomboys or exhibit tomboyish traits?", I would use that list. There are many more to list, but I listed some of my favorites. While I know Faye cares about her looks and etc., she really has this tomboyish attitude during the whole series.

• The Shrike Team (http://www.gun-plus.com/gallery/vgundam/vgundam_2.jpg) (Mobile Suit Victory Gundam (http://animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=1403)—it's arguable whether they are all tomboys, but there's no denying that they are strong, independent women—except for Oliver Inoue, of course. ^_^ )
Already listed:<ul type="square">• Madoka Ayukawa (Kimagure Orange Road)
• Meia Gisborn (Vandread)
• Motoko Kusanagi (Ghost in the Shell, especially Stand Alone Complex—though I'd argue that she is less of tomboy than some of the others mentioned, being more of a very mature, confident, competent woman.)
Honorable mention (IMHO only, of course):<ul type="square">• Rally Vincent (Gunsmith Cats)
Suprised how many posts it took before someone mentioned Akane of Ranma, but glad to see she finally got a couple votes.

So far no one has mentioned Slayers. I'd say Lina and Amelia both qualify as tomboys.

Can't forget probably the ultimate tomboy who couldn't be a girl no matter how much she wants to be, Ryuunosuke of Urusei Yatsura. Not a favorite, just feel sorry for the poor character. Even if her dad died it would probably be too late for her to try to be girly.

Some others, all fighters -
Maki aka Air Master (Air Master)
El Lag (Shadow Skill)
Chun-Li (Street Fighter)
Sakura (Street Fighter)

I am shocked that not one post mentioned my two favorite tomboyes:O

Lina Inverse from Slayers
Asia Clan Clan from Outlaw Star

There are also two characters that I cannot remember the names of.

The young female mad scientist from Love Hina
The gun-toting maniac from the Burn Up series.

I am also glad that Ryoko from Tenchi and Natsumi from YUA got a few votes:)

I think that one reason for the tomboys in anime is that they are woman in a mans world and have to out-guy the guys. I think that this is true for many characters that are career rather than marriage bound.

Another one (and god knows how I didn't include her before) is Anna Hart from Kaleido Star. She has the masculine looks and the outgoing personality, but at the same time her simple desire to make everyone laugh always make me want to cheer her on.
