View Full Version : Do you marathon?

I do.
I was curious what others do with their anime collections.
Do you decide to sit down and watch a whole series at once or do you break it up and watch "a little of this and a little of that" a little at a time?
I personally find myself picking a complete collection from the shelf and going through it all at once whether it takes all day or a couple of days.
How about you?

Usually end up watching the entire series in one run.

Yup, if I start one series I usually stick with it until its over. Time wise I might spread over time but then just as often when I really get into it I do late into the night runs where I can't stop until its over.

No.
I am usually watching three shows at a time. I will typically watch one or two episodes of one and then move on to the next. If I get near the end of a series that is really interesting I might watch four or five episodes in a row just to get to the end quickly. That is as close as I ever come to marathoning.

I usually buy and watch dvds as they come out, but once I own the whole series, I usually will marathon it and watch the complete series again over the course of 2-3 days.

I usually watch my DVDs the same way. Sometimes I will watch a random DVD of shows that are episodic in nature, such as Samurai Champloo or Kino's Journey.

I don't. I simply don't have that much free time.
I usually watch 2 series at once, and I'll watch an episode of each back to back about 5 days out of the week. I can't ever see myself having 6.5 or 13 (or more!) hours of free time on any given day, so marathoning is simply not a possibility. But an hour a day I can almost always do.
Some series are better over a longer span of time anyway. As long as I watch most days of the week, I can go through 2 to 4 series a month, depending if they're 13 or 26 or more episodes each. I also like going at a slower pace since it gives me more time to 'live' in the mood of a series. Cardcaptor Sakura took me from roughly last October to the very end of January... Having Sakura and company on the mind for 4 months straight is enough to melt anyone! /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif

I'm usually watching several shows during a stretch of time, but sometimes I break through moments of monotony (or waiting for new volumes to ship), by cruising through an older fave.
And then there's those shows you pick up on the fly and cheap, with varying results. I marathoned The Devil Lady one weekend and felt pretty dead by Monday. Dai-Guard on another, warily becoming aware of a new appreciation for mech-related shows.
And I just finished Chance Pop Session this past one...boy, that was some nutty music video!

I do both.
Usually when a new title becomes available in the R1 market, I will watch the DVD as soon as I buy it. But sometimes other senarios such as work, sporting events, and other activites that I'm involved in will delay my anime watching, and I have to resort to reserving time and marathoning a series.

I marathon DVDs, always, even if I haven't seen the show before.
Shows that are still running in Japan I tend to watch week by week, and only marathon if I get behind, or don't think I'll get to see it all and wait for the last ep to watch, just to be sure.

I have only marathoned 1 series non-stop which was Mahoromatic(both seasons). My mind was complete mush after that./images/graemlins/knowital.gif
Whatever I receive from Netflix gets priority unless something comes in the mail that I really want to see. So marathoning will probably never happen again, unless I wanted to get deeper into backlog.

It varies for me. With a toddler running around the house and a mother who is very strict about what he is exposed to, my watching time is limited. I usually will watch a couple of episodes of something after the kid goes to sleep before I have to hit the sack myself. If I have a large chunk of time to watch some anime, then I might get in a whole disk, but that's usually the max.

I can't imagine that watching an entire 26 episode series in one day would be any fun. My body would be aching from sitting all day, and my brain would have trouble processing all that hours of information.
I think the most I've marathoned was maybe 7-8 episodes in a day, and that was a rare instance.

I marathon!
I love just sitting down for 12 hours and watching a series completely through. I find you can really pick up on things and watch the flow of a series very well when your going from episode to episode. Its kinda like reading a book straight through I guess.
Still, I'm single and have no life really. So this is practical for me. I suppose people's milage will vary. But for me, marathoning works well. In fact, next up will be a marathon session of Gravion, Gravion Zwei, and then X-Files seasons 1-4 and the Naruto boxset over the 4th! Think I'm set for a few days at least.

Rarely. I have but I usually stick to maybe one to three episodes at a time.

It is my preferred way to watch a series. Since I collect singles sometime I will watch only the newest volume but if it has more than three month gap in between volumes I often will go back and watch all of the discs of the series I have. Once I start a series I like to watch it all the way through before moving on to something else. There are some series like Gilgamesh and Gankutsuou that I have waited until all of the disc have been released before I watch them just so I can marathon the whole series at once. I usually only watch anime for about 3 to 5 hours at a time but if I have a few days off or am really interested in a show I have watch anime for up to 14 hours at one time
Sometimes, if it's a series that I really like and have the time doing it. My most recent marathon was "Petite Princess Yucie" that I watched in a course of a week (one DVD volume a day).
The longest series I've ever marathon was "Marmalade Boy" along with my brother. We watched it over the entire Labor Day Weekend.

Nope. I don't have the attention span to watch huge amounts of episodes in one go. The most episodes I've ever watched in a day would be 10 (last 2 disks of Gundam SEED where I got completely engrossed in the story) and probably about 15 with Naruto. But they were complete one offs.

Well, in my personal lexicon it's not a marathon if it's split over multiple nights /images/graemlins/wink.gif. Anyway marathon reasonably often, heck 13 ep shows can be marathoned on a work night (It's only 4 1/2 hours /images/graemlins/wink.gif).
When I have several unwatched shows to get through (like now after the DDD 20% sale) I tend to do disc rotation.

I rarely marathon a show in one sitting, I think the last one was Banner II. I just can't sit in one spot for hours on end. I usually rewatch series over the course of a few days or within a week. It all depends on the show and if it makes me put the next disc in without thinking about it.

I used to marathon series all the time, now I don't have as much free time, so I have to watch disk by disk. However, when I have all disks I tend to watch them all in 1 or 2 days.

I try to stretch my watching out over several nights, so it's been a while since I've marathoned a series. Right now I'm jumping between watching several shows depending on what I feel like watching at the time.

No.
I don't have time (even on my days off) to sit and watch a 24-26 episode series in a day. My way of marathon is to watch 1-2 discs a night and continue the following night. Besides, sometimes it's fun to pause and think about what you've just seen. /images/graemlins/tongue.gif

The truth is it depends on the series and my mood at the time. Both in terms of how much I watch in a row and how often I watch something. Plus outside forces may influence things. For example I may delay watching a DVD for the sake of completing a game. Especially if the game is a rental and the DVD is actually owned.

I just finished Crest of the Stars. I plan on starting a series of mini-marathons with Banner of the Stars I & II. Hopefully by the time I finish them my Firefly DVD boxset will have arrived.

If the series has been completed, I will marathon as much as I can until it's done. I rarely start another show once I begin a series. With the exception of fansubs & Gasaraki.

If I have the whole series and haven't seen it/haven't seen the majority, then I will usually marathon it, watching it all in few days or so. But I rent and buy a lot of singles, so I obviously don't marathon those.

I usually just watch my dvds as they come in, so I watch part of a series one month and then more two months later, etc...

I typically watch 1 volume of something a day. Something means one of my DVDs or a Netflix DVD. So no, I don't really marathon in the traditional sense. I used to, but I simply don't have that time anymore.

I marathoned Serial Experiments Lain...bad idea.
I also marathoned FLCL. Good idea /images/graemlins/wink.gif.
I used to but don't have the time now. I only marathon during Christams/New Years week. I watch my DVD's as they come in, though I'm trying to knock off my back catalog that I've built up.

Almost never. My idea of watching a show at high speed is 1 episode per day until it's done. I like savoring my entertainment and letting it all sink in from episode to episode.
Though I do watch a few series at once at that pace which keeps the backlog down.

Almost exactly what I do... I wish I had put it as briefly as you just did.
...and now, I am perversely tempted to marathon Bottle Fairy to see if such a feat is survivable by mere mortals. /images/graemlins/sweat000.gif

It depends on how good the show is and how much self-control I possess at the time. I intended to watch one disc a day of the Chrono Crusade thinpack box. I watched the whole thing in one sitting. On a work day. No sleep for me. /images/graemlins/knowital.gif

Not reading any other responses.......I break up shows and watch different volumes at a time. I can't watch the same show straight for 'x' amount of days. Unless I'm really into the show, or it's one of my favorites.

I usually stick with one series until I've finished it (or at least as much as I possess at the time), then move on to another series. How much I watch at a time depends on the series (and how much free time I have). If a series is really good, I've been known to end up marathoning it, but if it starts to get dull, I might watch it one episode at a time.

I only marathon series I've already seen before, as it's hard for me to retain details when marathoning a series for the first time. I've tried it once with Infinite Ryvius, and all I can tell you about that is a general description of the premise. Other than that, I don't remember much of anything.
I marathon every chance I get. Before school was out, I'd have marathons every weekend. But now I'm always out and about, so I haven't really had the chance yet.

It depends. If I buy a collection or box set of a series, I'll usually mini-marathon it. (get home from work, and watch until bedtime...)
If I buy the discs as they come out, or if it's a show I'm nut super excited about, I'll watch one disc at a time.
I almost always watch a whole disc at once. I can't remember where on what disc I left off otherwise ....

It's the only way I watch anime. I have to have the entire series in front of me; it also helps pass the time while I'm ironing clothes /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif
