View Full Version : AoD Statistics: 5th annual top 10 anime
dunno001

As per discussion in the other top 10 thread, people decided it would be better for me to actually start fresh, and give people a chance to organize things how they'd like. Since this will be my first year doing this, I'm going to try a simplified method- simply do your top 10 anime. Movies will not be split out, and may be included with your list. Your top pick gets up to 10 points, down to 1 point for 10th. If you do not rank them, each pick gets up to 5.5 points.
These threads will be marked as kept, so you can reference your list at any time. For my simplicity, please make a new post if you wish to change your list; I'll go back and deduct the points from your old list and rescore your new list. (I'll see if I can find an easy way to port everyone's list to my computer in an organized fashion.)
If you posted in the older (now locked) thread, please repost in here, because I am NOT porting from that thread.
That aside, the top 25 anime at AoD (as of 7/22/06, 22:12), with 92 pickers representing a total of 260 entries, are...

I can narrow down my top 10 favorites (barely) but I had a harder time trying to rank them. Here's my final list:

Special tip of the hat to Kimagure Orange Road & Battle Athletes which just barely missed my list... /images/graemlins/happy.gif

Well, I'm still finalizing things for AD2007 (and partially looking for someone to take over the helm of that), but I have to be prepared for if I have to do that again also. This is my first year doing this, and while I have a spreadsheet for tracking this, I'll also be doing some other tinkering behind the threads to make this much easier for me to do in 2007, and then I should be able to resplit out movies, as well as possibly try splitting out OVAs which was suggested last year. I did state that if someone would like to take this over instead of myself, they were welcome to.
But I do have another reason- the movies list didn't seem to change too much, and had fewer participants. Also, some people really love movies, and others tend to not have them too high in their list, so I'd like to see where they fall when compared to everything else, including TV series- can they hold their own, or will they fall down? Knowing me, I'll probably still show the top 5 movies for those curious. (That's only a matter of another column to flag an M for movie.)

Which is why I'd be ok with just not doing a top 10 for movies at all, heh =P It's the same thing every year, on every site, no matter who you ask.

Fair enough I guess, although I'd still prefer the list be made just series eventually.

Ok, this'll be tricky to organize them.
*note that I haven't FINISHED too many series, but here are my top 10-and no Azumanga Daioh isn't #1*
10.Fruits Basket- Akitaro Daichi is a mastermind. 'Nuff said.
9.Grrl Power- This is such an unbearably charming and adorable OVA. I've seen it plenty of times, and am completley in love with it.
8.Princess Nine-What a fantastic story of determination. These nine girls will do whatever it takes, and its a great blend of humor, action and drama.
7.My Neighbor Totoro- Dude, it's My Neighbor Totoro-no explanation needed.
6.Samurai 7- This is one heck of an enthralling action show! Nice work Gonzo!
5.Tokyo Godfathers- Satoshi Kon makes the BEST anime movie of all time released in North America.
4.Kaleido Star- This first season of Kaleido Star is absolutley heartwarming and an exciting drama at the same time.
3. His and Her Circumstances- its just...so good!
2. Azumanga Daioh (is it even a suprise that it's on my list)-It's funny, it's heartwarming, and SO EASILY loveable. In fact, the only series that I've seen that tops it is...
1.Haibane Renmei- The most enthralling, thought-provoking and b-e-a-u-tiful anime in R1.
Serial Experiments Nobue
06-28-2006, 03:44 PM
Here it goes again... this time for the record, and this time adding the nearly impossible task of filtering movies into the list. Not listing the entire Ghibli catalog is a painful decision, but some sacrifices must be made in the name of statistics! /images/graemlins/sweat000.gif
My Top 10 as of this very moment...
01 - Revolutionary Girl Utena: Adolescence of Utena
02 - Revolutionary Girl Utena
03 - Spirited Away
04 - Serial Experiments Lain
05 - Figure 17
06 - Haibane Renmei
07 - Vision of Escaflowne
08 - Cardcaptor Sakura
09 - Angelic Layer
10 - Witch Hunter Robin
I could list so many more... I feel bad for the titles I had to leave off.
Oh, and I know it won't affect the scoring, but in my mind 3 through 6 are a virtual tie... The margin of all these top 10 is very slight.

My top ten list of favorite animes (though certainly not the best I've ever seen)
1) Detective Conan (445 episodes and 10 movies later, and for some reason, I'm still not bored o.o)
2) Marmalade Boy
3) School Rumble
4) Azumanga Daioh
5) Cardcaptor Sakura
6) Rurouni Kenshin (through the Kyoto Arc)
7) The Irresponsible Captain Tylor
8) Maison Ikkoku
9) The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
10) Tenchi Muyo: Ryo-Ohki

I will try this...
1. Cardcaptor Sakura
2. Hellsing
3. Evangelion
4. Vampire Princess Miyu
5. Berserk
6. Spirited Away
7. Escaflowne
8. Full Metal Alchemist
9. Ruroni Kenshin
10. Laputa Castle in the Sky
These three series almost made it, Wolf's Rain, ROD, La Blue Girl /images/graemlins/noseblee.gif. It is hard to come up with my top anime.

The inclusion of movies confounds things a little bit for me. May need to readjusting later on... (three of these are "early leads" for me, meaning I've only had one or two watchings of them)
1. Magic User's Club
2. Princess Tutu
3. Magical Project S
4. Cardcaptor Sakura
5. Cardcaptor Sakura: The Movie 2 - The Sealed Card
6. Rozen Maiden
7. Spirited Away
8. Tenchi Muyo! OVA
9. Mahoraba Heartful Days
10. Whisper of the Heart

1) FLCL
2) Azumanga Daioh
3) Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu
4) Haibane Renmei
5) Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
6) Mai-Otome (/ Mai-Hime)
7) Fullmetal Alchemist
8) Samurai Champloo
9) Bubblegum Crisis 2040
0) Cowboy Bebop
There we go. I decided to shuffle them around a tad, since order will be making a difference in scoring. Biggest change was dropping Champloo a few places and sliding Haibane just before GitS:SAC. I think I'm feeling much more comfortable with this revision.

4. Saint Seiya
5. Sailor Moon
6. Saint Seiya Hades Chapter - Sanctuary
7. Fancy Lala
8. Now and Then Here and There
9. X TV
10. Berserk
WIsh movies and OVAs were split coz I feel bad for not including Tutu, Magic User's and Escaflowne...

I'll take a crack at this:
1. RahXephon
2. GiTS:SAC/2nd Gig
3. Neon Genesis Evangelion
4. Maria-sama ga Miteru
5. Revolutionary Girl Utena
6. Vision of Escaflowne
7. Crest/Banner of the Stars
8. Cowboy Bebop
9. My~Hime/My~Otome
10. Noir
GiTS is pushing hard against my longtime favorite, RahXephon. But as I haven't seen the last 2 volumes, I'm in a wait-and-see mode. My~Hime pretty much knocked Kare Kano out of my top 10. While Berserk and Witch Hunter Robin are also very close to Kare Kano.

4. Haibane Renmei
5. RahXephon
6. .hack//SIGN
7. Jin-Roh
8. Last Exile
9. Serial Experiments Lain
10. Spirited Away
I hate to nitpick, but isn't a thread that specifically limits itself to this year kind of pointless unless it's done at the end of the year?

2.) Elfen Lied
3.) Chrono Crusade
4.) Vandread
5.) Blue Gender
6.) Samurai 7
7.) Princess Mononoke
8.) Escaflowne

Yep, same as last thread, 'cept I moved Midori up a few spaces:
Here is my top ten:

2. Berserk
3. Midori Days
4. Martian Successor Nadesico
5. Irresponsible Captain Tylor
6. Gungrave
7. Psychic Academy
8. City Hunter
9. Super GALS!
10. Shingu: Secret of the Stellar Wars
The first six are pretty cemented in place, the last four were a big competition with GTO, Slam Dunk and Air Master barely losing out. Currently watching Princess Tutu, and it looks like it will be guaranteed a place by the time it's all done.

Subject to change, but as of this moment in time my Top 10 are:
1: Gankutsuou (unique)
2: Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu (best anime tv series and just all-around "what the heck did I just watch and where can I get more? in years. Honestly, it had me just from the OP/ED)
3: Ouran High School Host Club (best comedy in years)
4: Mushishi (beautiful & haunting)
5: Planetes (best sci-fi in years)
6: Hikaru no Go (I want a go set, preferably haunted. Now, please. Lots of fun, and great characters)
7: Princess Tutu (the quintessential magical girl show)
8: Whisper of the Heart (favorite Ghibli film)
9: Fighting Spirit (hella fun & funny sports anime, and characters you love and root for. Who knew?)
10: Urusei Yatsura: Beautiful Dreamer (arguably best Oshii film)
Which leaves Last Exile, Patlabor, MazinKaiser, Macross Plus, Gunsmith Cats, tactics, Golden Boy, Roujin Z, Wicked City, Phantom Quest Corps, Wings of Honneamise, Memories, Zipang, Strawberry Marshmallow, KamiChu!, Card Captor Sakura, Witch Hunter Robin, My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki's Delivery Service, Porco Rosso, et al, to duke it out for favored nation status in my heart.

This time, I've added unfinished series to the list, mainly because I know baring a major foul up, they are ending up here anyway.
1) Kaleido Star - The most wonderful shoujo ever - characters (Sora in particular), animation, music, the whole circus aura, and the plot in S2 - plus a couple of great OVAs, particular Layla's makes this the greatest show on EARTH...:p
2) School Rumble - Comedy at it's finest with about god knows how many pairings that have been suggested now and with two of my personal favourite characters ever (Harima and Eri) this even beat the mighty AzuDai to the punch.
3) Princess Nine - Yeah, I'm British - and my knowledge of basbeball is practically zilch. Yet, the soap opera drama, the cast of characters, the ectasy, the tragedy, and my favourite 'b*tch* character in Izumi Himuro...wonderful.
4) Princess Tutu - I guess seeing Kaleido Star as number one makes another Sato creation not too far behind...another unusual motif with ballet, but the use of classical music, the wonderful cast with Ahiru and Rue, the changing of both Myoto and Fakir and the telling of the story just adds to this wonderful take of the magical girl genre.
5) The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya - This year, two shows get into my list very quickly (Tutu being the other) - what can I say apart from Haruhi is the greatest character ever, Kyon's sarcasm is so brilliantly done and the strangeness of the episodes and the way they are played just add to it's overall brilliance.
6) Full Moon wo Sagashite - Comedy, romance, but above all, drama make me cry EVERY TIME when I watch this show. Every single time...*sobs*...Wonderful.
7) Kino's Journey - A brilliant tale of nothing - a traveller, a motorad, and the tales of the cities she travels to after escaping from one making discoveries that everything is different, and yet the same. Captivating.
8) Cardcaptor Sakura - It took me 3 years to completely buy this series and the two movies!!! The quinisential mahou shoujo show, with sweetness, fun, drama, romance and a wonderful heroine added by wonderful friends. A must see.
9) Azumanga Daioh - Osaka. Nuff said.
10) Angelic Layer - My second Clamp series which seems to get better every time I watch it - a rare occassion for me to see the anime surpass the manga despite it's different ending. Cute, funny and just plain enjoyable - and if anyone can tell me how to make Ringo's pigtails please...:P

Just as an aside; for all those listing Haruhi Suzumiya, that show hasn't finished it's initial season on japanese TV, or am I mistaken about that? If it hasn't been finished yet, and you haven't seen the ending, I find it strange you would put it in a list like this. Just because I've seen a lot of posts here where someone says something like, "Great show, but the ending ruined it for me /images/graemlins/tongue.gif". Considering how much expectation this show seems to have built up among it's fans, it is quite possible that could happen to a few people. Not that anyone isn't free to say any show is their favorite mind you, but IMHO something that I haven't seen all of I might be leery of putting here, but whatever. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif
I'm going to take a stab at this, but this is brutally hard for me, since I am not very discriminating to begin with, and I love anime movies too, so this is really, really tough. Not in any particular order:
Noir - Don't know why, but I am a big fan of the Girls w/ Guns genre; definitely one of my favorites.
Berserk - Even not really liking the last 1/3 of the show that much, this easily makes the list. Just pure awesomeness.
Blue Gender - Only seen this once, and I already know this is one of my favorites. Bleak, so very bleak. Which is good! /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif
Dragon Half - I've watched this at least 15 times. Enough said.
Crest/Banner of the Stars - It's all one show, so far as I am concerned. One very great show.
Love Hina - Everything I ever wanted in a romcom. Such yummy characters!
GitS: SAC - I'd surely have had the first movie here, but this is even better, and so much more. If you could name a franchise instead of a title this one would surely be a winner for me.
Kiki's Delivery Service - Stands in for all those Ghibli movies I love. Seeing a preview of Kiki doing the broom ride over the harbor is one of the things that got me back into anime with a vengeance, now that I think of it.
Hellsing - I know now just how far from the manga they deviated, I now know WHY the manga fans are so POed at this one, but damn it, I still like it!
All Purpose Cultural Cat Girl Nuku Nuku OVA - Left field, I know. Megumi Hayashibara does it all though. /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif The restaurant episode is somewhere in my top 5 episodes of any anime, all time.
Honorable mentions: Urusei Yatsura,Witch Hunter Robin, Slayers!, Maison Ikkoku(have not seen box 8 yet, this may catapult if it ends well), Patlabor TV, Samurai X:T & B OVA, YUA!,Kino's Journey, Armitage OVA,Gunbuster OVA, and probably about 20 other titles I'm not going to mention now... /images/graemlins/wink.gif

Oh yeah, and I also cleared up the subject, so that hopefully will remove some confusion. And add to that, remember that you can change your list later in the year should you feel the need to. I'm working on storing everyone's lists on my computer so that all you need to do is post a new one, and I can change it. Unfortunately, I've not found an easy way for it to do scoring changes automatically for me yet... so that'll be handled seperately.

And lists can be changed, so it's not a big deal. Regardless, I posted it as my #1 in the other thread, but for this one I'm waiting until the last episode airs. Granted, it probably needs to flop with the fury of 50,000 suns collapsing in on themselves, and end in an orgy of horrifying futa scat rape to lose that #1 position I'm tentatively giving it, but I'll wait anyway.
Besides, I've realized that Haruhi isn't the kind of show where we need to fear the ending. Without including spoilers that don't belong in this thread, I'll just say that most of the concerns we have with an ending (closure, wrapping up relationships, etc) are not nearly as relevant to Haruhi's final episode as they usually are in other cases. Even if it's somehow a mediocre episode, it doesn't hurt the overall progression of the show all that much. Certainly not enough to drop it down a slot, for me.
I only dropped HiME down one from where I was going to tentatively place it after ITS ending aired, and I was vastly upset at that one, so since it's not even possible, story-wise, for Haruhi to have a similarly problematic (for me) ending, I'm just not so sure it's much to be concerned about. And again, if people want to change it, they can go ahead and do so. Part of the role of the person who does the tally for this thread is watching for updates (which people should place in a separate post and mark in the subject line, to help Dunno out)
Anyway, I should be able to see the last episode... in 5 days. I'll make the list official then.

I don't foresee much of a problem. At least for that show. Many people already prefer the MUC OVA over the TV as it is (though I prefer the TV personally /images/graemlins/wink.gif) and would have no objection to listing them separately.
Maybe you can have an even more separate franchise category? Something for titles that spread over all formats of the medium: TV, OVA, movies, etc.

There's certainly no exact science to placing a dividing line, but I'd say at the very least theatrical features should be split out next year. As I've said before, it's always just Ghibli and a few big name stragglers anyway, every year, without exception, on every site with every group of people anyone has ever asked.
OVAs are the tricky part. When they're part of a franchise that includes a TV series, it's easier to say they don't have to be lumped in with movies, but one shot OVAs are much more similar to movies and it's hard to say that they should be taken out.
A three way poll with TV, OVA and Feature Films is technically the best way to go about it, but even there there are some issues -- the HxH OVAs are a direct continuation of the TV series with nary a break inbetween, so what's the point of separating those? The Tenchi Muyo OVAs 1-2 are just as long as any other 12-14 ep TV series. There are other examples as well. Still, the real problem releases should be few and far between, and decisions can just be made about those as we go, I guess.

Good ol' copy and paste:
1. Full Metal Panic Francise
2. Azumanga Daioh
3. Gungrave
4. Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha/A's
5. Ai Yori Aoshi/Enishi
6. R.O.D. the TV
7. Vandread/2nd Stage
8. School Rumble
9. Planetes
10.Twelve Kingdoms
Did a little switchin' around. Removed GK21 since it's an OVA. However for some like Nanoha and FMP is it to include more under one since it's part of the same francise?

I had been waiting for B-Rad to start this thread a couple months ago. One may think that would mean I am prepared... I am not. /images/graemlins/wink.gif
I will try this anyway and will merge the movie(s) in, somehow. I have kept a spreadsheet of my selections from the past, which helps, a little. Still, cutting out some movies/TV series will sting a bit (going from 15 total to 10).
1 - SDF Macross: DYRL (Movie)
2 - SDF Macross: (TV)
3 - Crest/Banner of the Stars
4 - Macross Plus (OVA)
5 - Record of Lodoss War (OVA)
6 - Neon Genesis Evangelion
7 - Genesis Climber Mospeada
8 - Last Exile
9 - Bubblegum Crisis: Tokyo 2040
10 - Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam
That was a lot harder this time. The first time around I had barely seen 10 series, so it was a lot easier a couple years ago.
My Top Ten:
1.Revelation Girl Utena
2.Fruits Basket
3.Full Metal Alchemist
4.Kurau Phantom Memory
5.GIST SAC/2nd GIG
6.Cowboy Bebop
7.Fushigi Yugi
8.Escaflowne
9.Monster
10.X TV

Dunno001 is right, and I can think of a couple other series(YUA!, Patlabor) that started as OVA and then converted to the TV series. Me, I just lump it all together, I did not realize some might prefer just the OVA say, in cases like that.
Also, what does one consider something like Voices of a Distant Star? Is that a one episode OVA? It's certainly not movie length, but it definitely is stand alone. Blood: TLV is in the same boat.
OK, as with almost everyone else I find this extremely difficult to restrict to just 10 entries - so I've made it a bit easier by restricting it to those anime with a complete R1 DVD release. Of course the ranking and which ones take the top 10 positions changes with mood/phase of the moon etc., but these are ones I've enjoyed rewatching.
1. Dual! Parallel Adventure
2. Full Metal Panic! / Fummoffu
3. GITS: SAC / 2nd Gig
4. Hand Maid May
5. Planetes
6. Midori no Hibi
7. Onegai Twins
8. Cowboy Bebop
9. Neon Genesis Evangelion
10.Kareshi Kanojo no Jijyou
Sorry to the 198 other titles in my collection that didn't make it :-(
One minor point - I can sympathise with most of the selections on the lists posted, but I'm mystified that Kino's Journey makes it on to soo many.

I have two thoughts on this:
One: I think if someone votes for a show they are voting for all it's sequels and continuations, regardless of format, unless they specify otherwise.
Two: I think that format is not as important an issue (as far as categories) as length. For instance, I'd compare the Tenchi Muyo OVA with a TV series, because it has as much space as a TV series to get its story told. I'd compare a short TV series like the recent Shinigami no Ballad to a short OVA such as FLCL or the original Catgirl Nuku Nuku. Does that make sense? People argued last year about whether Voices of a Distant Star counted as a movie or an OVA (I guess it premiered on video). So if there were three categories, I'd say: Movies and Short Features (single episode videos); Two to Eleven Episodes; Twelve Episodes or More.
I have no doubt there are many problems with this notion, so I trust you all to tell me what they are.

Well here's my Top 10 list and except for my #1 pick don't ask me to put them in order. It was hard enough just picking only ten.
#1: Kimagure Orange Road - Madoka will always be my girl.
Cowboy Bebop
Planetes
Figure 17
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (1st and 2nd seasons)
Kimi ga Nozomu Eien, Rumbling Hearts
Starship Operators
Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki (OAV)
Iriya no Sora, UFO no Natsu (Iriya's Sky, The Summer of UFO's)
Crest/Banner of the Stars
My honorable mentions (some of these are too new or not yet finished and may move onto the list in the future):
Mai~HiME, Eureka Seven, Scrapped Princess, Fate-Stay Night, Shana, Kurau Phantom Memory, Last Exile, School Rumble, and The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya.

First time actually ranking my favorites and it was rather difficult since I thought of ~20 titles in like five minutes. And while they are ranked, there isn't much of a difference and could be switched around easily.
1. Princess Nine
2. Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
3. Cowboy Bebop
4. Fighting Spirit
5. Super Gals!
6. Monster
7. Rahxephon
8. Crest/Banner of the Stars
9. Neon Genesis Evangelion
10. Kimagure Orange Road
Titles that nearly made it: Princess Tutu, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Twelve Kingdoms, Fullmetal Alchemist, Giant Robo, Macross, Touch, Planetes, His and Her Circumstances, FLCL, Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu, Fruits Basket, Berserk, Maison Ikkoku, Turn A Gundam, Beck, Gundam movie trilogy, Porco Rosso, Kiki's Delivery Service, and many more.
1. Cowboy Bebop
2. Boogiepop Phantom
3. Planetes
4. Fruits Basket
5. Neon Genesis Evangelion
6. His and Her Circumstances
7. Figure 17
8. Angelic Layer
9. Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
10. SuperGALS!
Thank goodness I haven't seen all of Princess Tutu or Fullmetal Alchemist yet...otherwise this would have been even more difficult.

4) Kino's Journey
5) Fullmetal Alchemist
6) Cardcaptor Sakura
7) Gravitation
8) Loveless
9) Voices of a Distant Star
10) X TV
Fruits Basket and Princess Tutu were knocked off when I had to add in the movies. I've only seen ten episodes of NANA so far, but I'm sure it's going to be well up there on my list next year. /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif

Since when did length determine the type of production/release? Blood was shown theatrically thus it is a movie, Voices (to my knowledge) was not, therefore it is not a movie, I don't think it's harder than that.
And I too wish movies could be separated as this is going to make things a lot more difficult. Yeah, we all know a movie list would just just be the same old Ghibli, maybe GitS and this particular board seems to be infested with fans of this Utena thing so maybe that too. But couldn't the same be said for the regular list? I mean I would be surprised if Cowboy Bebop, Berserk and Fruits Basket didn't come out on top, again.
With that said here's my list:
1. Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
2. Lain
3. Haibane Renmei
4. Evangelion
5. GTO
6. Porco Rosso
7. Patlabor The Movie
8. Planetes
9. Azumanga Daioh
10. Nadesico
Could I have separated movies FLCL, NieA_7, R.O.D The TV or Paranoia Agent would be somewhere in there, and to my movies list I would have added Patlabor 2, Spirited Away and Mononoke.

Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children is considered anime.
1. Monster – A brilliant achievement in coherent complex plot-weaving for what is quite possibly the most ambitious anime TV series ever produced, what’s not to like? Not only that, this is probably the most consistently beautiful of all Madhouse TV productions. If anything though, it needs a second viewing, I got lost with many of the overflowing details around episode 39.
(While we’re at it, I’ll probably open a discussion for the show here when I re-watch all 74 episodes in the next 3 weeks)
2. Master Keaton – It’s sort of like “Monster-lite.” Contained stories, but with many wonderfully interesting characters; all this as Keaton makes his way through gorgeous depictions of Europe in the late 80s through the early 90s.
3. Princess Tutu – Wow, such a dark and well thought-out story that carries surprisingly intricate ideas that get weaved together through what seem to be reinterpretations of various ballet and fairytale stories (reinterpreted in order tie all the ideas in, of course). It’s awesome.
4. Strawberry Marshmallow – Please refer to this picture:
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a342/dklreviews/doink1.jpg
And that is all.
5. Cardcaptor Sakura – Yeah, another great cute show… and wow, it’s when Clamp was still sending their stuff out to Madhouse. Also, when I say I like this, I mean I like ALL of it, which includes the two excellent movies that were produced alongside the TV series.
6. Gungrave –Such a neat show that goes into understanding the passion of men. It’s a little more updated here though, but still has that antiquated charm. It also has arguably one of the more powerful TV endings in an anime.
7. Now and Then, Here and There – It’s almost too surprising how Daichi was able to take a firm grasp of what is arguably more serious and sophisticated storytelling. Sure, the element of heavy drama is present in most of his stuff, but to build such fascinating ideas and characters on it was something really out of the ordinary for him, especially now that I’m looking at him through the context of all his other works.
8. Super Gals! – This is what you get when you combine cute girls and old-fashioned manliness. It’s such an ingenious concept. ADV needs to spend some of the money in that Evangelion live-action movie budget in order to bring the second-half of this show out to DVD here in the US.
9. Kaleido Star - Another neat Satou show. What I really like about this and Princess Tutu is how clear all the damn motivation comes across (much like Gungrave, except this is aimed at girls); I don’t necessarily find myself wondering why the hell the character’s feel the way they do mainly because it’s always explained in the clearest way possible, which is how just about all storytelling should be done. Oh yeah, Kaleido Star also has the record for “largest number of conceited people to ever grasp a single show.” Seriously, so much douche-baggery, so little time.
It’s awesome.
I think I cried when (spoils the first DVD of the 2nd season):
<span style='color:#dddddd;background:#dddddd'> Leon put Layla down because of how unimpressed he’s been with Kaleido Star’s performers… it had a lot of weight because you know it’s just not true, but you feel mortified as hell given that he’s so perfect and everything… man, what a douche </span>
10. Princess Nine – Wow, when I went in for this, I didn’t expect such a climactic tone to the overall atmosphere: this show was dope as hell. Arguably, the ending was kinda rushed and contrived, but there was a brilliant idea attached to it that really left and impression on me… just wish there was more.
And that idea was:
<span style='color:#dddddd;background:#dddddd'> Tomomi Mochizuki (was that his name?) was able to effectively turn the game of baseball into a well-rounded metaphor for love…
yeah, I talked about this before!
How’d it go again?
“Just like how she was running away from her love, she was running away from the game” </span>
Yeah, that’s brilliant!

I'm just not going to even consider movies to make this easy. I don't know. This is definitely subject to change.
1.) FLCL
2.) Magic Users Club
3.) NieA_7

5.) Slayers TV
6.) Urusei Yatsura
7.) Princess Tutu
8.) Patlabor
9.) Texhnolyze
10.) Cardcaptor Sakura
Azumanga Daioh, Irresponsible Captain Tylor, Ah! My Goddess TV, Planetes, Genshiken, Rumiko Takahashi Anthology, His and Her Circumstances, GitS: SAC, Last Exile, Boogiepop Phantom, The Big O, Legend of Black Heaven, Now and Then, Here and There and Kino's Journey should all be in there as well. In fact they probably alternate with the last three spots every month or so.

Looks like my anime preferences are significantly different from the AoD forum crowd.
My consolidated list:
Legend of the Galactic Heroes (Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu) (<font color="darkblue">new</font>)
Rurouni Kenshin OVA: Tsuiokuhen (Rurouni Kenshin OVA: Trust & Betrayal) (<font color="red">**▼</font>)
Touch (<font color="red">**▼</font>)
Tomorrow's Joe (Ashita no Joe) Seasons 1 and 2 (<font color="red">**▼</font>)
Monster (<font color="darkblue">new</font>)
Planetes (<font color="red">**▼</font>)
Patlabor 2 (<font color="green">movie</font>)
Now and Then, Here and There (Ima, Sokoni Iru Boku) (<font color="red">**▼</font>)
Mushishi (<font color="darkblue">new</font>)
Zipang (<font color="darkblue">new</font>)Key:
(<font color="darkblue">new</font>) - New entrant to the list
(<font color="green">**▲</font>) - Moved up the list
(=) - No change
(<font color="red">**▼</font>) - Moved down the list
Rurouni Kenshin OVA: Tsuiokuhen has at long last been toppled from the number 1 spot. It took a series that truly defines the word, EPIC, for anime - Legend of the Galactic Heroes, a new entrant to my list. This long running OVA series just keeps hitting all the right buttons in terms of storytelling and characters that I can't help but be swept along. The huge number of characters in the series can be overwhelming but as long as you concentrate on the main characters, the rest fall into place in the detailed story. And the real stunning thing about the achievement of Legend of the Galactic Heroes is that I have yet to finish the series! THAT is how damn brilliant this OVA series is. It's no wonder that I have this OVA series at the very top of my licensing wishlist.
The other new entrants into the list are Monster, Mushishi and Zipang. Monster was expected to figure in the top 10 but Mushishi and Zipang surprised me. Mushishi is a highly series about primodial entities known as mushishi and their deadly impact on direct interaction with the human species. The real beauty of this episodic series is that while it seems like a "monster" of the week show, the stories actually tell of the human condition. Zipang was expected to be a controversial title but my decision to just watch as is was well-rewarded. There's more to it than just simple time travel. The series asks fascinating questions about approaches to securing the peace and much more. (p.s. I absolutely love the titular main theme of the show.)
There are only 2 sports anime in the list but they are not there because of the genre, but because the stories have great heart in them. Touch is a drama about fulfilling dreams and finding one's confidence and self again after years of suppressing it. There's baseball, romance, and humour in there but it's the heart of the personal drama that makes it such a winner in my books. Then there's Ashita no Joe, the anime series that made me realise in my much younger days (late 70s/early 80s) that there's more to Japanese animation than space battleships, a certain charismatic space pirate /images/graemlins/wink.gif, and giant robots (including those transforming and recombination ones). That there's an engrossing story about a street ruffian who becomes a boxer and the path of drama and tragedy taken. Yes, nostalgia probably played some part but when I have been rewatching the series (both seasons) often recently, it was the characters and the story of great heart, drama, and tragedy that makes it so exceptionally memorable.
Patlabor 2, the only anime movie that made my consolidated top 10 list. The intricate plotting, political maneuvering and philosophical discussions made it a heavygoing but highly delectable movie that showcased how brilliant Commander Gotoh is. He's my favourite anime character.
Credit has really got to go to the staying power of Now and Then, Here and There in my assessment. Simplicity, steady storytelling/direction, and sheer impact of the message all delivered in 13 episodes. The best work of ace comedy director Akitaroh Daichi turns out to be a gripping drama which is a 180° turnabout from his usual fare.
What should be noted is that there are still some excellent anime being made and it's not the preserve of older shows. Monster, Mushishi, and Zipang are recently broadcast high quality shows with intelligent content that caters towards the more mature audience. It's also where I find my interest starting to concentrate on. And with the manga, A Spirit of the Sun, being adapted into anime for WOWOW's anniversary, there's more of those kind of shows to look forward to. *Waits for news of manga like 20th Century Boys, Rainbow and Pluto to be adapted into anime*
For the record, my current Top 20 anime TV series and OVAs:
Legend of the Galactic Heroes (Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu) (<font color="darkblue">new</font>)
Rurouni Kenshin OVA: Tsuiokuhen (Rurouni Kenshin OVA: Trust & Betrayal) (<font color="red">**▼</font>)

Infinite Ryvius (<font color="red">**▼</font>)Lots of new entrants. None on previous year's list moved up. Credit to Hajime no Ippo for being able to hold its place in the face of the onslaught of new entrants.
And my Top 10 anime movies:

Here's where my Top 10 stand
1. Voices Of A Distant Star
Voices Of A Distant Star does in 25 minutes what it takes most anime 26 episodes to accomplish. Full of raw emotion that each and every one of us can sympathize with and character development that never seems too rushed or too slow, it's almost hard to believe at the end that this only took you a half-hour to watch. The animation style is incredibly unique and painstakingly detailed to the point that it's hard to believe this was made by one man on his PC, and much of the music is just plain gorgeous. I still tear up every time I hear the first notes for the ending song. No other anime has been so moving or left such a deep impression as this one, and with how short it is, it makes it the perfect watch.
2. Air
There is something to be said about a series that can make you feel the way Air does. I wouldn't say the word is "sad", but it is incredibly moving, illustrating in incredible scenarios the power that family and companionship truly has. On top of that, the series has a dynamite soundtrack with music that fits each and every scene perfectly, awe-inspiring animation, and a very well-planned-out plot that takes some time to come into view, but once it does, it just really takes off.
3. Full Moon wo Sagashite
Shoujo is good, but Full Moon is no ordinary shoujo. The premise sounds a little bizarre, a little cheesy, and the setup for an incredibly painful ending. However, it suceeds in being none of those in any way, shape, or form. The voice acting, while uncoventional, is perfect. The execution starts out slow but really picks up in the latter half. And the character development is some of the best ever. If you do watch this series, watch all the way to the end, as Full Moon has the most perfect anime ending EVER.
4. Elfen Lied
By far the darkest and most disturbing series I have seen yet, but it is through it's horror that Elfen Lied is above the rest. Rather than use it's graphic qualities to disgust or terrify you, Elfen Lied uses nudity, gore, and incredibly graphic subject matter to it's benefit, painting a gloriously eerie tapestry of innocence and depravity with it's characters.
5. Kaleido Star
I hate series like this one. Ones where the character has to accomplish incredible feats and obstacles to be the best at something, full of training arcs and incredibly stuck-up "villains"... so why is Kaleido Star so freakin' good!? Well, for one thing, the motivation of it's characters is incredibly sincere, the relationships have a very real quality to them, and the animation is nothing short of orgasmic, especially the various performance scenes.
6. Azumanga Daioh
This is a show about nothing. It has no plot, no overachieving goal for it's characters, other than to graduate high school of course, but Azumanga Daioh has such a unique brand of characters that seem very familiar and likable to it's viewers and it's brand of comedy is nothing short of original. Plus, there is no man who can resist the lethal cuteness that is Chiyo-chan in a penguin suit.
7. Mahoromatic
Gainax's biggest fanservice-palooza is also one of it's most heartfelt series. Combining random scenes of T&A with some very moving revelations of humanity from it's main character, Mahoromatic strives to be better than any other fanservice anime and completely suceeds.
8. Haibane Renmei
Does this anime have a plot? I don't know and I don't really care. Haibane Renmei takes serious depression and turns it into something completely uplifting, plus it is gorgeous to look at.
9. Fullmetal Alchemist
Like everything in life, it's about the journey, not the destination, and Fullmetal Alchemist nails this right on the head, putting the relationships of it's characters to incredible lengths and having some of the most jaw-dropping and heart-wrenching plot twists of all time.
10. Kannazuki no Miko
The plot of this series is completely hokey, the characters contrived, but the relationship depth between it's two female leads makes it more than worth the watch, especially in the latter eps.

Ah so we are merging the My~* series? Let me think then... Man, it's hard to decide what to add to my top 10 /images/graemlins/sweat000.gif I suppose I ought to move back in one of the series I pushed out, namely Evangelion or the * of the Stars franchise. I'll go with Evangelion. Take my updated list to be this:
<font color="red">01) The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi</font>
02) Scrapped Princess
03) Serial Experiments: Lain
04) Azumanga Daioh
05) My~* (HiME/Otome)
06) Martian Successor Nadesico
07) Kare Kano
08) Uchuu no Stellvia
09) Full Moon wo Sagashite
10) Neon Genesis Evangelion
BTW, where is My~* ranking at the moment? I'd assume not all THAT high since Otome isn't licensed and HiME only has two or three discs out in R1, but I'm curious.
As for the results... well, as much as I love Bebop, I'm glad to see it not in the top three. It's just always there, boring =P
And Azumanga at #3? Fricking awesome, if I do say so myself. I remember last year or the year before when we had this poll, people were commenting on how they thought Azumanga's popularity would fade over time. It wouldn't hold up alongside the true fan favorite classics of anime. Well, here we are, time has passed, and it isn't falling any -- it's just growing more popular. Go Azu~

It took a long time to decide, but using various criteria to remove series from the list, I finally managed to get it down to the top ten. So here is my list.

You know what? No movies this time. And I can't STAND not having Azumanga Daioh as #1...I just can't...

5.Kaleido Star
4.Samurai 7
3.His and Her Circumstances

There's some more Gungrave love! Although it is at #8 for me, it still beat out some tough competition to make it on my list. As much as I love these series I left out Eva, Bebop, Hellsing, and Niea. And then I thought Paranoia Agent and Genshiken were both list worthy, but I haven't completely finished those series yet, so it wouldn't have been fair to include them.
Man, looking back on my list, I just noticed how much soundtracks influenced some of my decisions, FLCL and Voices especially.
Let's see here....
1) Haibane Renmei
2) The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
3) Shakugan no Shana
4) Bleach
5) Mai Otome/ Mai Hime

And much <3 for Haruhi, glad to see it doing so well (since that #1 vote for it is me, of course) even though I know it can't maintain that position forever -- it's just way too new. Staying in the top 25 for awhile would be awesome enough. Still, impressive showing, and the highest ranked unlicensed show by far.
Speaking of that, what's the next highest ranked unlicensed (or well, unreleased at least) show on the list? I can't really even guess what it would be without scouring the existing posts so I could make an educated guess.

That's... hard to answer fully without an in-depth discussion that's not appropriate for this thread, really. I had scored them separately at first, but Dunno said others were scoring them together, so I had to go with that. And hey, that's fine, cleans up a spot in my top 10 to add another show =P In any case, there are good arguments both ways, so it doesn't bug me.

I imagine so, if the My~* shows are. Similar situation, though there's even more of a case for these.

I think it's a hard call and could go either way depending upon one's opinion. It depends upon how you want to define a direct sequal. Mai Otome is *kinda* but then again it kind of isn't. I'd lean towards isn't personally. But they do share all the same characters. The Please series does not share the majority of it's characters which is the biggest difference. Please Twins stands as it's own show and not a direct sequal much more clearly because of this.

On another note, what happened to B-rad? I thought it was his role to start one of these every October. Also Dunno, it's kinda too late now, but I think that a seperate list for movies in the future would be better, and people would instead have a separate top five list for movies. Sometimes it seems as if movies are left out because the series get a much larger share of attention.

Well, yeah, there's nothing scientific about it. I look at how the first few to pick a series list it, and go from there. Since when I first compiled the list, quite a few people had listed Mai-Hime and Otome together on the same line, so I merged them. (I'm also not familiar with either show, so I just went with it.) But you did get my reason for Please Teacher/Twins right- different characters, which makes it harder for keeping it straight running. Likewise, I have all the Tenchi series seperate, Crest/Banner together, etc.

Well, the initial reasoning was that since this is my first year, I want to try something simpler, to find a good way to track everything. (Ideally, I'd find a faster way than now to update the scoring...) And, one way to simplify would be to put it all together. The movies list never changed too much, either, so I figured that I would see how well they hold up going against all the series. Next year, if I do this again, I'll prolly reseperate it. (Which will mean that I have to find a good way to split and make 2 lists per person.)

*shrugs* I don't know. But as a number cruncher, doing it this way makes sense to me. Someone who picks 9 series unranked gets the same number of points as 9 series ranked, but not the full value that they would get if they had 10. (So perish the thought that someone only picks 1 series, it only gets 1 point.)

Number eight isn't too bad, don't ya think?
I find the whole B-rad situation kind of exaggerated. To me "personal attacks" and "exile" have always seemed like words too strong to describe internet situations. I always get the impression of brutal beatings and fleeing refugees with those two words.

I missed the original tiff, which I assume went down in the dub forum. I avoid the DF like the plague, as I prefer my melodrama in its most pristine form a la Marimite. /images/graemlins/knowital.gif
Social relations online are pretty fascinating. From my perspective, I suppose that on more than one occasion I've taken offense where it wasn't warranted.
It sounds like this little spat has gotten way out of hand--which is too bad because B-rad has had a lot of interesting comments to contribute in past "conversations."

It is actually a pity that he left, because the old "AOD's favorite anime" threads that he made contributed to a major part of my collection, and only on a few occasions was I really disappointed with highly ranked shows.(Witch Hunter Robin which was originally on the top 25 list and Gundam Seed which was not ranked but on many's lists to be exact. The fact that I bought half of each show before even starting to watch them also left me in an even larger quagmire.)
Eventually, it's interesting to see how we humans get so easily exasperated over trivial matters. Spats online have little significance to real life, and it's amazing to see how people will get really worked up over some minor issues. Disputes over religion and race and sexual orientation, I can understand, but seethe over "personal attacks" seems like a tad waste of brain. It's just the internet after all. There's really no way to actually beat the person up. I guess emotions just get the best of us sometimes. That reminds me of Fencedude's plight as a GameFAQs mod. He purpotedly even received empty boxes from disgruntled posters. The power of emotions is amazing. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif

Well, fortunately, this annual AoD favorite thread lives on without him, showing it was larger and more than the guy who used to run it in the first place, which interestingly enough is the point to why Brad has "exiled" himself--though it had to do with a different forum "institution": the monthly dub awards in the English Track. Really, that's all there is to know about it. The "personal attack" thing is a side show. It was primarily a political issue, which one side lost, and one side won.
I’m glad the favorite thread was rescued by dunno and very much appreciate his effort to keep it running. And I’m disappointed it was left in the lurch to begin with.
So, thank you, dunno.

Heh, I try. This year is more an experiment for me; ideally, I'll be handing this over to someone next year, so I can focus more on my moderator duties. (I don't neglect them now, but it is why I don't get to update this as often as I'd like.) And, as things stand now, this goes through December, and then AD2007 (which it looks like I'll still do) starts right up in January. That'll go through March (probably), then if nobody else takes this, it's back to this in April or May... damn, I've got year-round thread-watching now...

New update done, and it seems like the top 10 is really starting to settle, but I'm sure that Kenshin would like to get in, knocking on #10's door by only half a point. The updates have finally finished getting up the top 5 movie scripting, and of course, #5 had to tie, so that's shown also. I can tell you that my template has room for exactly 10 series per person, no more. So if a list is >10, and not ranked, I can't score it. (I can chop a ranked list off at 10.) Not to mention that I'm not going to try to devise a new scoring system for more than 10 at this point.

Having almost all the same characters (and series length and animation and story structure) is a big point, I guess. But again, it's just how the things went. It was decided long ago that ROD would be separate, while for HiME/Otome, people had mostly been putting them together, so Dunno went with it.

I understand that. I just think of the Hime/Otome verse as two distinct stories that are/could be related, whereas with ROD it is very clear that the TV series is a continuation of the OVA. In both cases the main characters are different from one incarnation to the other, but characters from the previous incarnation show up in the later incarnation. I feel Hime/Otome is similar in this way to Please Teacher/Twins, which I believe are considered seperate for the sake of this poll.
Either way, I don't care that much, I just found it a bit odd considering how vastly different Hime/Otome feel outside of having the same character designs (not all characters act exactly the same across both incarnations), and similar plot elements. I find many more people gravitate to one of the two series than do with ROD where it seems they take or leave the whole thing.

That's pretty much it. I don't look at length, and the biggest influencer for me are the first few people to pick a series. I do know that there are a few differences between ROD OVA and TV, so I decided early to seperate them, which was also supported by early lists specifying TV, and not doing a TV/OVA listing. However, most of the early lists also had Hime/Otome, and since I don't know much about them, I went with the listings and left them together. There's nothing scientific about it.
