View Full Version : Comforting & calming anime characters for companions?

One reason I like anime is the voices & personalities of its (female) characters.
Sometimes, as in the case of Madoka Ayukawa in KOR, its a perfect blend of appearance, expression, natural tone of voice & manner - and re-assurance.
Or for Misato Katsuragi in Eva, the right combination of "womanchild" adult toughness but with vulnerability, coming across just right.
In a different way, also Miyuki Kobayakawa in YUA.
So which characters, either male or female, English or Japanese version, have a "wish you were real" effect on you because of their personality, speech, voice & general manner.

Aoi Sakuraba of Ai Yori Aoshi and Tohru Honda of Fruits Basket.
Both of them define "comforting and calming" for me. The fact that they are domestic goddesses is just an added bonus. It is also purely coincidental that Aoi is totally hot. /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif

Nuriko from Fushigi Yuugi would be an awesome friend/sibling. Fun and quirky, but also can be serious, brave, reasurring, etc when needed. Nuriko rocks.

My first choice would be Mayuko from NieA_7. I feel so bad for her that I want to give her a big hug and tell her everything will be ok. I wish I was in the show in Genzo's place. /images/graemlins/sweat000.gif
And on the lighter side, Mikiko (aka Kuromi) from Animation Runner Kuromi.
On the english dub side, Sango from InuYasha.

Hmmm...
The most comforting and calming anime character that I've come across thus far would have to be Belldandy. I love everything about her. After all... she is a Goddess /images/graemlins/happy.gif
Secondly would probably be Lafiel. I don't quite know why however. I suppose it's her stern, stoic, logical attitude combined with her femininity. She can be graceful and caring, but also strong and courageous at the same time. I once compared her and the other Abh to Vulcans... only with emotions. Someone you can truly rely on without hesitation either as a friend, companion, or (dare I say?) lover. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif

A few that spring to mind would be;
Mamori Anezaki (Eyeshield 21) - A great big sister type character who always says the right word to anyone but also has the bravery to stand up for themselves and anyone else.
Ami Mizuno (Sailor Moon) - An intelligent girl who always can put you in the right direction with a kind smile on her face.
Rika Sena (His and Her Circumstances) - Always cast in the background, but she is the TRUE leader of the girls and the calming effect of everyone...even more so when she actually does get mad. /images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I forgot about her. Shame on me.
Belldandy would make my list too, as long as she did not bring Urd and Skuld with her. Those two have a lot of good qualities, but "comforting and calming" are not among them. Especially when they are together. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif

Belldandy would be mine as well. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif Mahoro Ando (Mahoromatic) deserves mention as well.

I say Mutsumi Otohime and Kasumi Tendo.
I also support The Belldandy Theory, along with the condition that Urd and Skuld are NOT included in the package deal.

Chikage from Sister Princess. She's stable and independent, and yet, she is capable of truly deep love (like in the games where she essentially sells her soul in order to help her brother). Furthermore, she has a touch of that "tsundere" personality (where the girl acts coldly around others but opens up when in private with the one she loves) that I find so endearing.
I find that her confidence would also have a calming effect -- for a glimpse of this, just see the "sports festival" episode from season 1.

Wonder if Hare would agree.
I agree with Belldany and Tohru. They both are understanding and kind. I think for guys I would pick Kenshin and Conrat(Kyo Kara Maoh) both seem to be calm and the basic good guy. At least when Kenshin isn't being a manslayer.

Add Mutsumi to my list. I knew I was forgetting someone. Tohru would be as well.

Ma from NTHT was pretty solid, but she didn't get enough screen time. Altena from Noir is pretty good too...if you don't mind being manipulated by her as well. /images/graemlins/devil.gif
Judeau from Berserk was very low key, but after seeing this a few times I'm of the opinion he is almost the den mother of that crew. Always there when a pep talk or a shoulder to lean on was required. Great character.
Why is it that Myazaki films almost never have strong mother figures in them? I think Pom Poko has the most screen time for the mother figures of any of his movies. I love his stuff, but why is it they always seem to get shunted to the side or are never in the show period? It's just odd, but this thread made me realize that...

Belldandy (yes, again!) is the first anime character I've wanted for a girlfriend.
That said, Rushuna Tendo would be my second choice. /images/graemlins/noseblef.gif /images/graemlins/stunned0.gif
