View Full Version : Anime recommendations that you regret giving

I've noticed that in the anime recommendation forum, sometimes people give recommendations for an anime when they have only seen a few episodes (a fact that they sometimes conveniently omit to mention). For me though (especially with recommendations against , I will often make sure I have watched the entire show (unless we're talking superlong anime like DBZ) before giving recommendations.
Have you ever given a recommendation for(can also be against) an anime after only watching a few episodes only to regret it later on when you watched more episodes and realized that the later part of the anime was nothing like the early part?
As for myself, I've only regretted twice, for Maburaho and Scrapped Princess . To be fair though, when the recommendation thread started, the two shows had not even finished airing in Japan yet - a fact that I clearly noted in my recommendation that it was based on the 1st half.

I recommended Air Master to everyone I know based on the first episode. I loved the show all the way to the bitter end, but every single person I knew watched it and despised it so much they refuse to ever trust my judgement again.
Baffling.

Eh? I love Air Master. One of my all-time favorites. And I generally don't even like fighting anime.

Airmaster is a hard one to recommend. I absolutely love it, but a lot of people would despise it I think, because of how ridiculous it is, and how ugly the characters are and all that, but that's what I love about it. It's so absurd and hilarious. And the awesome fight scenes of course.

I really wish I had seen all of Kiddy Grade before trying to get more people to give it a shot. I was thoroughly engrossed by the show from the start, but I expected too much and the story simply did not deliver. It's a shame, since I still endorse the awesome score and the English dub.
Now I do try to clam up until the finale, unless someone specifically requests negative opinions about any element in a show that he/she is considering.

While I'm sure there are a few series out there given that some anime I liked at first eventually fell apart. However I can't remember too well which of those I directly recommended. Still even if you finish a series, you may regret recommending it later. Simply because there is the "wow" factor and you may not notice how you truly feel about the show until it's long over. That much I can say.

Tenjho Tenge
I loved the first 2 DVDs and got a few people to bite into the show. Then the series lost its direction with too many uninteresting flashbacks and it just sucked overall. Then there's the fact that it has no ending, or so I'm told. I haven't bought anything past DVD 5. What a terribly misleading series.

Easily one of my favorite anime series of all time, the flashbacks defined this show for me, bringing richer characters to bear from the manga whose stories were finished, as opposed to Souichirou and the gang whose adventures continue to this day, it took a lack of completed story material and made more than the most with it, I've watched it three times and anxiously anticipate a fourth...
BUT, trying to recommend TT to people has yielded mixed results...
Though, I've had somewhat worse recommendations, I love Divergence EVE...LOVE, but telling someone to just try the first episode...BAD IDEA, I actually went back and watched the first episode, and yeah, it's not as vibrant, complex or, hell, ALIVE, and now I wonder if the people I recommended to will continue...for some, it takes a few episodes to get hold, for me, well, I'd say by ep3...my point being, recommend a whole volume(or more, eek) of DEve...

Tenge sucks. Just read the manga (and I dislike manga). Then it's not a surprise when you get still shots for fight sequences. You know it's garbage when the bad guy's absorbing charges from a 3 story bull for training. Please.
J2 is way more of a fighting anime than this show, and it has entire episodes where no action occurs. Hell, so is Love Hina. More effort is devoted into animating a Naru punch than most episodes of Tenge.

You should add "Argento Soma" as well *thinks of your recommendation to me of that show* /images/graemlins/sweat200.gif /images/graemlins/icon_rolleyes.gif

Personally I don't usually give recommendations for shows I haven't seen all of, but sometimes I do and mention that I've only seen a certain amount of it. I always remember getting so excited and giddy about Now and Then, Here and There being licensed and trying to get others excited about it, even though I'd only seen one episode. Of course, it turned in to one of my all time favourites so I am glad I did. But I don't tend to regret my recommendations because I don't give them unless I feel sure about a series.
Actually, from the end of someone receiving a recommendation, I find it more annoying when people jump on the bandwagon and start dogging a show after just one episode has aired in Japan. I personally find that annoying as I'll always give a show a few episodes to find its feet (I find that with pretty much any TV series that works out best, as some first episodes of normal TV shows are horrible as well). But I always thhink of things like Divergence EVE and several others that were just bashed to death by a lot of people to the point of annoyance when they had barely seen any of it.

I certainly don't recall ever giving a whole-hearted recommendation of Argento Soma. Are you sure you are not confusing me with someone else? My opinion of that show has always been mixed - it does have both its strong and weak points and it never really swings too much into the extreme end of either.

Wonder if that's one of those not watched fully shows. I was pretty fascinated with the premise of that one myself. Really felt reminiscent of Signs, except with an even stronger buildup (an advantage to being a series). But then the twist wound up totally sucking. Bleh.
