I thought this might be a fun poll.

Which pre-haircut Haruhi hairstyle did you like most? Choose from this picture here. (http://www.filespace.org/Vifam7/haruhi_hairstyle.JPG)

It was a tough choice between #3 and #5 for me. I ended up going with #5.

No, not the one I'm currently using as my avatar... /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif

I chose #2...was a tough decision, as I'm a sucker for ponytails and pigtails.

It's a tough choice and honestly it wasn't a specific hairstyle so much as the fact she had a variety of them. This is all your fault Kyon. /images/graemlins/cry00000.gif

I vote for the crazy Sunday versions we never get to see =P Barring that, and putting aside her eventual "canon" hairstyle for the purposes of the poll, it's a runoff between 3 and 10, but simplicity wins this time, so 3 it is.

2 and 5 were the best for me. I like the twintails, but think #2 fit her better, so that's the one I chose.

It was a hard choice between 3 and 5 but I went with 3 in the end. It adds an additional dash of style and sophistication to the twintail look IMO.

I was torn between 1 and 2. 2 was cute but it's too different from the way she looks now. 1 is like how she looks now but with longer hair. I liked the longer hair better but that's just my character preferences. I ended up picking 1 but 2 would be in second.

ponytail moe banzai! -_-;

Otherwise I'd say 1 beats out 11. The smaller ribbon works better IMO.

Well the one I liked best isn't on the list. That was the one she was wearing right before she went to the hair style she has through most of the series (she has yet another hair style in the scene where she's discussing why she's changing her hairstyle everday). While it was similar to #10, it wasn't quite the same. I think there was a extra tier and she used blue/purple ribbon. Oh well /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif.

Not knowing anything about this character or the series... But I likes #6 the best.

What show is this? It seems like this girl has the same expression in class every day. Makes me want to know more.

I guess this is The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi. Seems to be popular.

I never heard of it before the Girls anime draft. But, I don't download my anime, so I wouldn't know about it. It sounds like it might be interesting, so I'll have to wait until it is licensed, released, and then discounted in a thinpak, and then I'll get to see what the big deal is...

This is the only anime forum that I bother with. It takes too much time to just keep up with one forum, I can't imagine even trying to check more than one. For mat matter, I only pay attention to the General Discussion forum here.

It's much easier to read email, and this haven't been discussed on the mailing lists I participate in.

So, I really haven't heard of it. Is it really just about the main character looking for aliens?

No. It's about... errr. I don't even know how to describe it anymore without spoiling it. It's become a part of my very subconscious by this point. Well I'll try... Haruhi is a strange but beautiful girl who introduces herself in this way on her first day of high school:

"From East Middle School, Suzumiya Haruhi. I have no interest in ordinary humans. If there are any aliens, time travelers, sliders, or espers here, come join me. That is all!"

And from there... it just... I don't know what to say. She creates a club in order to find these mysterious beings, and names it the SOS-dan. The name comes from: Sekai wo Ooini Moriagerutame no Suzumiya Haruhi no dan, which is translated primarily as "Save the world by Overloading it with Fun, Haruhi Suzumiya's Brigade". At any rate, she quickly collects the core cast as her brigade members (starting with the narrator and other lead character, Kyon, the one who first broke the ice with her), and from there the story revolves around the very, very strange things happening around her, which she is almost entirely unaware of... Her brigade members can't claim the same though. Poor Kyon.

The structure of the series it partially out of chronological order. The main story (about half the episodes) proceeds in linear fashion from beginning to end, but is "interrupted" at multiple points by other stories that occur in later novels (the series being based on a number of them, with The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi being the first and primary). These are seemingly random at first, but the order left lots of awesome inside references and treats for the attentive viewer. When you finish the show, you realize just how much it added to the experience. It also makes the show a singularly fulfilling rewatch (and rerewatch and rererewatch and...[etc.], if you're me). The R2 DVDs switched it back to pure chronological order though, so the fear is that the R1s will do the same, depriving most R1 fans of the original order. Literally half of any "Top 10 Favorite Episodes" list I put together would come from this show, and most of them would be the "other novel" episodes. Episode is my favorite episode of anything ever, and the climax scene of it is my favorite scene ever. Still, the merits of each order are the subject of much debate, and while most prefer the boradcast order, not quite everyone does. In depth debate on that would be completely spoilery though, so I'll refrain. Just keep in mind that when people say "Kyon order" they mean broadcast order, when they say "Haruhi order", they mean dvd/chronological order. I like to give both episode numbers when I talk about the show sometimes, aka 02K/01H.

Oh, and the first episode is a stroke of brilliance ...But you won't realize it until you're at least halfway through the show. Your first time through you'll likely just be in shock wondering what the hell that was /images/graemlins/sweat000.gif I couldn't decide if it was pure genius or pure stupidity at first. Obviously, I eventually settled on the former. Mi-mi-mikuru BEAM!

The animation is some of the best I've ever seen (my god it's so beautifully clean and clear), and the OP and ED are two of my all-time favorites. One of the insert songs is my #1 favorite song in the Japanese language. The voice acting is among the best I've heard, and Aya Hirano (Haruhi) is officially my new god. The writing in general goes beyond anything else I've experienced, particularly with Kyon's supremely apt inner commentary about the events going on. It's a Kyoto Animation production, which means production values going straight through the atmosphere and out into space, and an attention to detail that gives me orgasmic shivers to this day. I've seen some episodes as many as ten times already (<3 12K), and it moves me just as much as it did the first time, if not more.

While the standard disclaimers of YMMV and "decide on your own, not on hype" and "I may be one of the biggest fans on the planet of this show, so don't expect to like it QUITE as much as I do because it's probably not possible" apply, I fully believe it is not within the power of the English language to express how much I adore this show, or how completely it has blown away my ability to comprehend the concept of 'entertainment'. When I talk about my favorite shows (or favorite anything really), it's SHnY first, and then... well, everything else is somewhere way out on the horizon, or something. Nothing else matters >_<

After seeing how much this show is promoted/popular in Japan - basically it seemed like every other anime store in Akihabara was either playing episodes from disk 2 (the one that was in current release - which seems to actually be the 3rd disk - since there was a 00 disk), looping the beginning and ending of the show, or playing the soundtrack in anticipation of the release of disk 3 (4).

Also when I heard they were changing the episode order on the DVDs, I decided to check it out so I could see it in the broadcast order.

I thought it was very good, but not in my top 20.

I completely agree that the animation is excellent. The music is also very good.

However, I think the hype (from its many, many fans) surrounding this show, raised my expectations too high, and it would have to have been the most amazing thing I have ever seen to live up to the hype, and it just wasn't. It is too high a bar to set, and I really try to avoid hype for this reason, but with this show it is extremely difficult to avoid - although Tomcat seems to have done a much better job than I did in this area. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif

Also, I made the mistake of watching it immediately after Honey & Clover (which I wanted to check out to determine whether or not I wanted to by the R2s). Tomokazu Sugita plays both Mayama in Honey and Clover and as well Kyon in The Melancholy of Suzumia Haruhi. Both characters have the same deadpan tone with moments of desperation/exasperation in their inner monologues, and as a result were just too similar, and despite my best efforts, I kept comparing Mayama and Kyon for the first few episodes.

I usually try and avoid this situation, and don't watch shows consecutively where the same seiyuu uses the same voice/style for different characters, but this one caught me by surprise, and the show was sufficiently good that I didn't want to stop watching it.

The other thing, which I know I am in the extreme minority about - is that the female character designs didn't do much for me. The faces were too young looking IMO - this is purely personal taste, and as I said, I know I am in the minority on that issue. Obviously this didn't kill the anime for me, as I said it was still very good, but it is not getting points from me in this area that it is getting from most of its viewers.

On the other hand, there is lot in the show, that as you mention, is perfect for multiple rewatchings. I have a feeling that this is a show that I will enjoy more the more I watch it. So it may very well move up on my list.

It is a shame that they decided to change the episode order on the DVDs, because I actually really enjoyed that aspect of the show. I like it when an anime challenges me to put the pieces together myself (as long all as the pieces are actually there to be (eventually) found - I'm not a fan of obscurity for obscurity's sake).

As for the hairstyle, I agree with MeggieMay. My favorite was the 4 point one with the blue ribbons on the top two points, from the second episode that she is wearing when Kyon asks her about her hair permutations. It isn't one of the images listed in the picture.

I'd be interested in what episode orders you've tried.

I'm also curious as to what the final DVD episode order will end up being (if it hasn't already been announced). I'll probably try that sequence on my next viewing of it. I'll definitely pick this up if it is released in R1 - even though it isn't in my top 20, it is securely in my "Pre-Order when available in R1 list".

Although, I imagine it will be incredibly expensive to license since it is insanely popular in Japan, and at this time (opinion subject to change since I'm admittedly not an expert on things like this) I'm not completely sure if it would sell enough in the mainstream R1 market to make back the costs and turn a profit. I don't see it getting a TV deal so it might have to recoup everything on DVD sales.

Not to mention the potential for boycotts from "hardcore" fans who will either complain that they changed the episode order - if it is released like the R2, or complain that it isn't like the R2 release - if it is released in the broadcast order. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif

Which IMO would really be silly, since if someone has all the DVDs of any series he/she can watch episodes in any order that he/she chooses to do so.

If it does get released in R1, it would be nice, if episode order liner notes were included with the final volume.

Sorry if this has already been hashed out many times in previous Suzumiya Haruhi threads - I avoid threads of shows that I haven't seen yet. I'm better at avoiding spoilers than I am at avoiding hype. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif

From all indications it's just Haruhi order (chronological). The only exception is that the 'movie' (11H) came out first, since it was the whole introduction to the marketing for the show with that "00" LE disc. Again, while I'll never watch purely chronological, I have watched "chronological except 5H-6H", and it's certainly fun for a second go around, since you've already experienced the original order.

First off I voted for Suzumiya Haruhi hairstyle number 5 which I though looked the cutest. She looked prettier with her hair longer. Guess she did not want to attract the attention of those boys anymore... no wait she lives for attention (or at least doesn't mind everyone staring at her in awe). lol

Well, at first I though the thread was kind of pointless, but some coversation is starting.

I have not seen much of this show. When I saw the ending I really did not see what the big deal everyone was making about it. Although, I do think the boy on the right looks awfully adorable. The first two scenes I saw of this show was the computer scene (which i admit was hysterical), and the singing scene (which I liked because of the crowd and the fact that Kyon could not resist to tap his finger to the music). I then saw the first two episodes not the 00 one since I do not think I could stand it. I did see the opening of it though. I dislike that they did not at least introduce the transfer student and then proceed with unarranging the episodes from their standard order. I am worried about watching the rest. I was looking forward to this series when it first came out, because I though it would be a normal high school series (cannot it not ever be this way), but I've been spoiled, and I really do not want to see the out there episodes such as the 00. I dislike the space aliens setting. I'll keep on watching it to see how it goes for me.

I had to quote the whole paragraph because I couldn't find just one part that boiled down my feeling of /images/graemlins/stunned0.gif /images/graemlins/stunned0.gif to its essence.

Why did you just watch random scenes (if you say YouTube I swear on my life I'm going to blow that site up... well besides the fact that you can't say that here anwyay =P)? And for the love of god, you watched the ending (by which I assume you mean the broadcast ending) without seeing the rest? You didn't understand the big deal... well... maybe it's a bad idea to watch the ending to a show you havent seen! /images/graemlins/stunned0.gif Of course it'll come off as totally meaningless... why does this surprise you?

I mean... I can't really understand what it is you did. "Space aliens setting"? What show are you talking about? =P Maaaaan. You really need to just wipe your mind clean and watch the whole thing, and not just random bits and pieces totally out of order. (As opposed to the "official out of order", aka the original order... =P )

If you still dislike it then alright, that's totally cool, but at least you'll know what it is you're disliking. As of right now you're just very, very confused (and confusing /images/graemlins/sweat000.gif). Of course you spoiled yourself, so it'll be that much harder to fully enjoy it as it was meant to be enjoyed. Try not to do that again, for any other show /images/graemlins/sweat000.gif I'd never ever watch random scenes/episodes from a show without any context, have no idea what it was I saw, and then talk about how it wasn't that great.

One thing I can quote specifically:
[ QUOTE ]

And thank goodness it isn't! It would just be like every other school romantic comedy show on the planet if it were, and we wouldn't even be talking much about it. Oh you got me totally wrong. Let me explain. I have not watched the actually ending. I meant to say the ending theme (hence my boy on the right sentence). You know the one where the guys and girls from the group are dancing. Alot of people were saying how great it was so I went to watch it expecting more dancing of it except the little that we got. Although the little robotic dancing that we got was cute.

Oh no I'm going to have to see in the news that a certain site just blew up out of nowhere. lol Yes, I admit. I did see two scenes I mentioned from there. Then I decided to watch the show so I skipped the 00 episode which is not my style from the little that I have been spoiled about this series.

So, since your a big fan of the show do tell me then if there are any battling in the sky scenes or anything of that sort or if for the most part it stays on school grounds, becuase I did see this one amv...

It was a difficult choice between #6 and #8 but I ultimately went with the former. Although I thought Haruhi looked a bit prettier with #8, I thought #6 felt a bit more natural on her. It's probably the plainest looking hairstyle out of all of them but that's just what I usually prefer and never really cared much for pigtails, ponytails or any other style in particular other than normal straight hair, particularly long. I guess I'm just boring like that.

And for some minor comments on the show. I've only seen the first three episodes in the broadcast order and while I thought those episodes were very good, the two episodes following the first were just nowhere near as brilliant. The show was occasionally funny afterwards but was mostly just very odd. And the Mikuru abuse already got pretty old by the third episode. Three episodes were pretty much all I needed to see and I haven't had any particular desire to watch any further but I'll still be purchasing it eventually if it becomes licensed.

Everything is terrestrial. You likely saw a scene from the episode where they're playing a PC game that involves space combat. The whole competition is dramatized as if it were a space battle even though they're sitting in a club room in a school in Japan. It's also an absolutely brilliant episode.

Basically, don't try and squeeze Haruhi into one genre/setting role with types you're used to (comedy, sci-fi, action, slice of life, romance, drama), because it's all of those, and in my humble opinion, more than the sum of its parts.

Also... Episode 01K (00) isn't really something that's a 'matter of taste' or not. At the very least, if you want to skip it the first time through (which I don't recommend, btw), watch it when you finish the rest of the episodes. If you enjoyed the other 13 episodes even one tiny bit, the 'movie' episode "00" will be a delicious and hilarious bit of irony.

Lastly, never use YouTube for this again. Evvvvvvvvver. Watch shows as they should be. I'm not saying how, that's up to you. For all I know you might own R2s or watch Japanese TV, but the point is that it's none of my business and let's leave it at that. But, please, pleaaaaaaase, don't watch a show in shitty little no-quality clips taken completely out of context and devoid of all emotional buildup, pacing and character development. It's bad, bad bad bad. Baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad. Not just for this show, not just because it's my favorite, but for ANY show.

I've already seen the first two and I like what I saw. Happy to hear it's not based in space.

Although I wish it would just continue in it's regular order so I could see the transfer student episode. I wish I wouldn't have even mentioned anything of where I saw it from. Yes, it's the first time I've done that since I usually just buy my R1's as they come to the states. I have not ever used any of those downloading programs, because apart from giving viruses I think they are just wrong in general. Especially when it's a series that's already been released in your country.

So let's deviate from that. Let's hope a good dubbing company gets it!

Broadcast order is the "regular" order =P Anything else is a later change. As for the "transfer student episode"... mild spoiler but he just sort of shows up, and joins. You aren't really missing anything of the story there. It's one small scene. In other words, it's not really an issue at all.

You have a response for everything don't you /images/graemlins/tongue.gif. I do know that it's messed-up order is it's regular order, and of course they must have there reasons for it as you probably know. Only one small scene for bishie boy huh? Yet, a whole bunch for Mikuru... clearly caters to the fanboys. /images/graemlins/wink.gif

The intro you were concerned about is what I was talking about. He's a full fledged brigade member and appears in almost every episode, so he definitely gets a lot of screentime. Honestly, almost as much as Mikuru. And he's a great character, but they all are.

I swear I can't talk about this show without getting the urge to rewatch again... I gotta slip in at least one episode tonight...

And I only keep responding because it seems like you're at least mildly interested, and you started out with some pretty major misconceptions about the show that I wanted to set straight, that's all. And it's my absolute favorite *thing* ever, like, not just anime series. But... object, thing, creation, piece of existence. So yes, I'm going to talk about it a lot =P

Not to mention the potential for boycotts from "hardcore" fans who will either complain that they changed the episode order - if it is released like the R2, or complain that it isn't like the R2 release - if it is released in the broadcast order. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif

I actually feel terrible for the poor company that eventually licenses this. If the DVD release of this isn't absolutely perfect in every way, the company is going to catch pure hell.

I have to say the hype really hurt the show for me. I'm just naturally a contrarian when it comes to popular shows, and this show's hype brings to mind the peak of Evangelion-mania. I'm just tired of seeing it everywhere on the internet. I love the character designs, the animation is excellent, and the show is generally enjoyable, but I just can't see why it's raved about so much.

Which seems like a more restricting form of conformity than liking the popular shows =P I suppose it's just a mindset I'll never understand. I watched GitS:SAC long after everyone else did, so I had read alllllll the hype, and yet that was never on my mind at all. I didn't expect or need the show to "live up to" anything, because the only opinion that matters to me in the end is my own. Ditto on CCS, which I've been watching for the first time. When I watch FMA one day (whenever that is, hopefully a cheap set isn't years away), the same will apply there. The list goes on... So it's not just a matter of me getting in on big shows before they're totally hyped up. I've watched many hyped shows after their hype was started.

Also, keep in mind that internet fandom has exploded in the past few years, and made itself much more visible, so making a fuss about a show becomes much easier because many more people see it and there are so many channels through which to spread said fandom (imageboards, messageboards, video upload sites, anime blogs, all the facets of 'alternate distro systems', the list goes on). Those have always existed to some extent, but their expansion even in the past two years has been meteoric. Haruhi has been neither the first nor will it be the last to experience extreme levels of exposure.

In short, I can quote this:[ QUOTE ]
I love the character designs, the animation is excellent, and the show is generally enjoyable, but I just can't see why it's raved about so much.

[/ QUOTE ]
And ask... Why do you need to see why it's raved about so much? You said it was generally enjoyable, and isn't that all that matters? In my eyes being too concerned about that is almost like liking a show less because others hate it. If you don't let that bother you, why let the opposite do it?

I dunno. I've brought up this exact point in relation to a dozen other shows before, but I should probably stop asking because I truly will never understand what the big deal about "hype" is and why it's so villified. Anime, music, live action movies, the same weird attitude pervades everything. ::shrugs::

Not in that scene. That picture is a splicing together of screencaps that run by as the narrator character, Kyon, talks about how Haruhi changes her hairstyle everyday, according to a color and number theme.

For most of the rest of the show she has the standard hairstyle that you'd see in fanart/promo art, and rarely changes it, except for one time that has major story significance...

I always like the look of #7. If you ever watched Mahoromatic: Something More Beautiful, when Mahoro goes to school (trying to be in disguise) with that hairstyle, it looks pretty good.

Oh, seeing as how I've not seen the show, why does she look angry?

Because she's stuck in a classroom with "boring" people. That is, they're not aliens, time travelers, or espers =P
