View Full Version : Denno Coil?
With todays Emma announcement, I found myself checking Moonphase(I love that site). I came across this (http://www.tokuma.jp/coil/), apparently being done by Madhouse. I'm not sure if this was a newly announced show or not(saying show due to the TV bit in the kanji) but it at least looks interesting.
All I could find was this:
[ QUOTE ]
Mitsuo Iso, one of the most talented and influential Japanese animators of the 1990s, is going to be a director. The first piece of information to be made public about the top-secret project that has kept him occupied for the last three or four years has just been posted on the newly-created official site. More will follow with time on the site and in Animage. The novel on which the anime is to be based will be published shortly by Tokuma Shoten, which hosts the site. Iso is credited as creator, writer and director, and it's to be produced at Madhouse. The illustration by Iso gives the first glimpse into what we can expect of the project visually. Unusually, the page makes a public call for applications from experienced animators and directors to join the production staff. I've never seen such a thing for a big studio project before. Presumaly the project is to be a TV series, since they're calling for enshutsu, which usually means episode directors. The title translates literally to "Electric Brain Coil", denno or 'electric brain' being the antiquated term for computer.

Has anyone heard anymore about it, or did I miss the boat again?

Apologies for practising necromancy on this thread but I just watched Episode 1 of Dennou Coil.
Short conclusion: I. AM. BOWLED. OVER.
If you can get your hands on this show, watch it!
Great imagination, great setup, wonderful animation and art with the beginnings of a great story and very promising characters. The fantastic potential of this show not only shoots up to the sky but is really on its way out of Earth orbit. This may just be the best show this spring season and may even end up being the best this whole year.
I'm going back to rewatch the episode and savour it.
Yeah, I was really looking forward to this, so I'll probably be watching too.
Planning took like 12 years or something, right?

Something like that. All I know is that it took more than 10 years.
I don't even want to write anything describing what happens in Episode 1 to let people discover and experience the episode (and the show) for themselves. Take a careful look at the production values and the world the show is set in.

Nice. I've had my eye on this show for awhile, so I can't wait to check it out. If it's as good as you're leading me to believe, then this is yet another addition to truly the best season in years for me. Possibly ever, depending on how things turn out.

Thanks for recommending this. I would have totally missed it.
Absolutely in the same league as Seirei no Moribito and Oh! Edo Rocket. Completely original feeling, entirely new world, lots of mysteries yet doesn't feel like it's being cryptic for crypticness sake, and you start picking up the rules pretty quickly.
Only problem with the show is that all the female characters have identical designs. I resent having to tell them apart by their drag and nondescript clothing.
Everything else was amazing. This really is shaping up to be the season of the decade.

Well, since there's only been one episode broadcast, there's a pretty slim basis for comparison. But I'd have to say, no, not really, but it depends what you mean. I quite enjoyed the first episode, but it doesn't look at all like it's going to shape into an introspective slice-of-life spiritual journey. It looks more like a sci-fi action/mystery series.
Not that both can't be good, of course ^_^ I just don't see much else in the way of commonality.

More 'neat' than 'emotional.' But in the sense of presenting you with a strange world and no explanation but not being confusing with it? Matches up well.

This is actually not true - one of the screenwriters for the anime is adapting the story into novels. But the story was created for the anime.
Yep. I loved the look of it way back when it was just a "hmm, whats this" site and it has paid off. The series has this ghibli-like charm to it and the animation is interesting with simplified character designs but "digital effects" when it comes to the world itself.

I'd compare it more to Satoshi Kon's stuff, really. They seem a lot like the Paranoia Agent and Tokyo Godfather designs to me, especially the old lady and the pets.

Watched episode one, definitely some interesting stuff. Once again though the art style didn't really click with me, it felt cold and not atmospheric enough. A milder case of the Fantastic Children syndrome for me; I'm interested in the story, but the art style turns me off. Though it's not too bad, and maybe it will grow on me.

I'm puzzled by your comment of it feeling cold and not atmospheric enough. It's in the suburbs. They have made it feel very life-like in a number of aspects. What kind and how much of an atmosphere should it have?

That's putting too much store into the "packaging" of the show. I know the packaging is what first engages the consumer. However, still what should be valued is not so much the packaging but the contents and for this show, the contents so far are stellar. Personally, I think the "packaging" suits the show to a "T" though.

Episode 2 follows up smartly from the wonderful first episode with more interesting and fascinating insights into the world. 2 episodes in and its brilliance is still supernova bright for me.
As some people have mentioned, the show does have some of the Studio Ghibli vibe. It helps but really what trumps them all is the show is smart, highly imaginative and realised. Although shown on the educational channel, it's not condescending and does not have any voiceovers to describe the world. It's all in there for viewers to pick up the clues left to assess and appreciate the world that it is set in. I have nothing but praise for this intelligent, fascinating and educational (in how they've developed and presented it) anime. This is the kind of anime I want my kids to watch.
This is a very rare occurrence amongst today's deluge of anime and as such, this show should be celebrated for its quality and worth.
p.s.
It's just brilliant that they made the granny a master hacker of this "augmented reality" world.

Hadn't heard much about this one but saw that an episode was finally available and so I jumped on it. Let's see if it's any good.
Episode 1:
- Nice OP, and very strange art style. I sort of like it though.
- Just from the first few minutes I can tell that some MAJOR effort was spent on creating the world this show operates within. The mix of real and cybernetic is both bizarre and quite logically integrated.
- Damn, Fumie's voice is familiar but she's not in anything I've really watched much of, so I'm not sure why.
- Damnit, this show is awesome. Really, really awesome. And 26 episodes? Hell yes.
- Yasako makes Oyaji blush XD
- So the Kyuu-chans are repairing all the breaks in the cyber/physical world barrier (though I wonder if making a distinction between the two is even relevant here), as well as hunting down the 'illegals'.
- RUN OYAJI, RUN!!!
- Satchi has come...
Damn this is such an incredibly well fleshed out world, and interesting as hell to boot. I am completely in love. There are a myriad of ways this show could go, from the fluffy to the disturbing, but if this episode was any indication of the talents of the team behind it, I'm sure it'll kick ass no matter how they do it.
Throw yet another on the pile of shows to watch... this season is just incredible.

Soon as they invent those JP<>ENG brain-implant chips, I'll catch up, until then this is the best I can do =P Besides, looks like it was a late starter, so only two eps have aired. The show most certainly does deserve pimping though, and then some. I'm doing as much right this moment, trying my best to get two friends on irc to watch, and watch nowwwwwww.

Episode 2 pretty much confirms it as consistently genius. Pretty obvious that the staff are massive Dr. Slump fans, but I heartily agree with her that Japanese curry is shit on a plate.
Denno Coil episode 2
Okay... so... this show is essentially a fantasy series, but the fantasy elements are incorporated using internet and technology, as opposed to... uhh... mystical magic stuffs.
It's really cool; this episode was great.
Animation amd action is still strong to boot.
Though...
Seems like Kyoko is in trouble as she's downlaoding some repair software for her glasses that's probably gonna cost a lot of money... at least, that's how I think it's working.[/color]

Episode 2:
- I really like the OP, not so much by itself but as a part of the animation. It's fitting, I guess?
- Awesome chase scene. Fumie keeps throwing out more and more strange and awesome gadgets, and they're really working this physical/cyber world melding in an incredible way. FUMIE BEAM!
- I really love the shrine they escaped into. Right in the middle of town, shaded by trees, it's like an island in the middle of everything. It would be so neat to step from one type of space into a very different type of space just by crossing the gate...
- Mojo army!
- So Yasako's grandmother is the local cyber toy dealer. And haha, Kyoko continues the respectable tradition of the loli-in-a-box. :sd: She's so... cute? Screaming "POOP" kind of changes that impression though =P
- I really really like Fumie~ I can't really put into words quite why yet, but she just seems... confident and capable, I guess.
- Hmm so back at Yasako's place, she and Fumie look into what's wrong with Densuke while Fumie explains the world a little more for the viewer, and then Mega-baa starts running some tests on Densuke to figure out what's being downloaded into him and to see if they can stop the spread of the Illegal's virus.
- Mega-baa is the leader of the Coil Cyberinvestigation Agency XD Fumie is number 7, which makes Yasako number 8 now (after she's blackmailed into joining). Whee
- Yasako is cuter without her glasses, but I doubt we'll be seeing that much since it would kind of sever her from the cyber world.
- Cryptic dreams, and a message from a brother she never had...
- Don't piss off a mojo... Kyoko catches one, but it retaliates by, uh, making her arms start to fade, kinda.
- Mega-baa counterattacks! And then a slightly weird place to end an episode.
Anyway, awesome episode again, the quirkiness continues and they continue to flesh out the world very well.

Yeah, a part of me thinks that maybe what's happening in the digital realm actually has some kinda effect on the physical plane...
But at the same time, I keep thinking of what Fumie said about how being shot *by one of those Kyuu-chan thingies* will only destroy the glasses...
But yes, I really don't know at this point; I'm assuming we'll find out as we go along.
*though, I don't think anyone has physically walked through a wall yet, if my memory is serving me correctly... I mean, the only reason why Densuke and "Old man" could do it was because they were digital, weren't they?*
Either way, it's interesting and quirky; no denying that.

Episode 3 continues the astounding start to the series.
Wonderful episode with lots of action as Densuke is spirited away by the moja. Fumie and Yasako go to the rescue with Oyaji leading them to the moja. I just broke out in a massive grin that just could not be repressed :D
More importantly, this episode fleshed out a bit more of the augmented reality world and we get to know who the mysterious girl is that sent out the moja to capture the virus/bug-stricken Densuke to get hold of the bug.
It's rare for me to rave about a series/show so early. This is one of those rare exceptions. I can only stand and applaud. The strong start is expected to continue with what the next episode preview has shown.
p.s.
When I heard some of the moja's verbal squeaks, my first thought was, "No..da..me?!?" ;)

Isako is a fascinating character. She's obviously working for some "higher" authority, but where did she learn about the chalk symbols (I've only just realised that the "invisibility" spell is a temple gate!) and why does she have those glowing keyholes marked on her shoulder?
(moreover, where did the key come from that unlocked the Illegal?)
Dennou Coil is really something special so far - immaculately paced and presented. Best show this season, by far.

There hasn't been an off note yet.
Hopefully they'll keep it up; Gurren Lagann ran into some awful filler for episodes 4-6, Oh! Edo Rocket had a less noticeable slump with a couple of episodes that didn't advance the plot much (appears to have recovered nicely) and Seirei no Moribito does suffer from the exposition factor (reading the novel now, and that stuff is riveting in prose, where I can actually understand it all) so Dennou Coil does have a chance to nab the best of season. The recap episode really took Gurren Lagann out of the competition, but the other three are all neck and neck, and it's going to come down to which of them has the best ending...

All that will have to wait for the show to reveal in due course. With regards to the deadzone area being marked with the temple gate icon, initially I was wondering why the use of the simplified Chinese word "开" (meaning "open") and only caught on this episode when Yasako hid in the temple gate opening that it is the icon for the gate.

For me, it's only Seirei no Moribito and Dennou Coil in the running for best of the season honours. Dennou Coil has the advantage of an even more solid start compared to the high standards that Seirei no Moribito already set. I'm expecting Seirei no Moribito to give us a solid and highly satisfying ending considering how well everything is coming along after 8 episodes so far but if Dennou Coil continues to be consistently this good right to the end, it has a great chance to steal it.
Oh! Edo Rocket just didn't work for me although I do see the quality in the first 4 episodes - so, that's totally out of the running for me.

Having now seen the first two episodes, like everyone else, I'm really loving this show. It has such a quirky charm to it, and the excellent production values don't hurt one bit. I'm really feeling spoiled between IG and Madhouse this season. I'm not yet in the "best show of the season" area. At this point, I still think that's Seirei no Moribito (which is all just total fanservice for me, considering my taste in fiction). I've not yet seen Oh Edo Rocket, which shall now change shortly, so I don't know where that falls into the overall scheme just yet.
But yeah, I'm impressed. I also could have used a bit more variation in the character designs, but it's a minor quibble and doesn't really detract from the enjoyment I got from watching the show. This season rocks. :D

I was expecting Episode 4 to be really good but I didn't expect it to better my expectations...
Amasawa Yuko ("Isako") really shows how skilled she is with cyber warfare declared by Daichi and his gang against her. It's fascinating to watch.
It all starts with Daichi pulling pranks in the classroom against Yusako first but with Fumie's help, the prank is taken care of. Next, Daichi tries to pull the same prank against Isako who not only takes care of the prank while at the blackboard solving a problem but also sending the prank back threefold to Daichi :D
Daichi and his gang thus declare cyber war on Isako.
And they get pwned. Big time pwnage by Isako.
Looking back over the first 4 episodes, this is smart and methodical story development and direction. The care and effort taken is exemplary.

Well, while nothing can truly be a suitable followup to a new episode of StrikerS, Dennou Coil is probably as good an attempt as anything. here's hoping this episode is just as awesome as the others~
Episode 3:
- Ah I like the OP sequence more and more each time~
- So we start out with a little narration recap, which sounds to me like "people are realizing now that this show is awesome so let's bring them up to speed" XD
- Great idea, Mega-baa! She throws her back out, and can't chase down the Mojos, so... she gives Kyoko some Mega Beams. Not the smartest thing to do XD
- The Monos capture Densuka, and Fumie uses Oyaji to sniff them out. Go Oyaji! But they're getting away...
- Satchii! It fries one of the Mojos, and they drop Densuke, who Yasako then picks up. But.. there are two Satchii?
- Awesomeness with thhe shrine gate XD The shrine itself is torn down, so Yasako can only stay hidden by standing directly under the gate. But then she slips and they're on her tail again. She's saved by Isako... who proceeds to steal Densuke and run off. Bitch! But... she's so damn cool anyway.
- YASAKO BEAM!
- Oh good god this show is cool. The scene at the construction site with Isako trying to put the key in the Illegal (and open... what?), while space itself is ruptured and the Satchii hunt them down and Fumie catches up with Yasako and Densuke is separated from the Illegal, and oooooh man. Quality. Dennou Coil is pure quality.
- Isako is an Encoder. A cyberspace wizard! Muahah! And now she's their classmate...
Pretty much every second of every scene so far has been dead on. I love Yasako, I love Fumie, and I love Isako. Kyoko is alright for a little brat, and Mega-baa is awesome. This is looking more and more like it's on track to become the season's #3, overcoming some INTENSE competition. I just wish more episodes were out!
Edit: Oh, and I can't wait to see the local hacker wannabes play tricks on Isako and then get utterly destroyed by her Encoder skills. It MUST happen.
Yeah... neat thing here is that, even though I'm still not sure how much all of this is crossing over into the real world, the action sure is intense.
And I like that Kyoko was irresponsible with the mega beam thingy... that just made complete sense for some reason.
(even funnier is that she abandoned the mission half way through though)
Oh yeah, and notice how people keep the glasses OFF during class hours...

Heh, yep, that was so... genuine. That's *exactly* what a little kid that age would do if you armed her with beams of cyberdestruction and set her loose.
I mean, she runs around screaming "POOP" for crying out loud, what made Mega-baa think she'd suddenly develop stealth/search-and-destroy skills and hunt down the mojos/mojas/whatever the hell? XD

What do you mean that it must happen? It has been confirmed to have happened in Episode 4 (link (http://www.animeondvd.com/forum/showpost.php?post/460599/)) :P
Psst, I get it, I got it long ago, you understand Japanese, you watch raws, I watch fansubs, so you're ahead of me. You don't need to remind me every single time you respond to anything I say about any ongoing show >_> I know you probably don't mean anything by it, but it does get repetitive.

Episode 5 continues Dennou Coil's inexorable streak of excellent episodes since the show started.
Yet again, this underlying augmented reality of the world is well thought out as Isako co-opts Daichi and his hacking gang to help her out by appealing to their greed for metabugs.
Fumie and Yusako tail them with another member of the Coil team, Haraken (Member #5). Haraken is a laidback, quiet guy of few words. Fumie enlists his help due to the capabilities of Isako.
While Isako and the hacking gang search for metabugs in a graveyard for buses and Fumie-led trio investigating what they are doing, a couple Satchis have followed them all to the bus graveyard. All hell breaks lose. Isako takes control of the situation by setting up a cyber-inferno to stall and distract the Satchis and also manages to wrest control of the gang from Daichi.
What's more impressive is not so much Isako now, it's quiet Hariken. One of the Satchis manage to corner Fumie, Yusako, and Akira (Fumie's younger brother). Haraken comes to the rescue with stalling the Satchi by issuing it commands to stop, sit and shake hands! Although he informs them that he can only do so for a short time, he looks to be someone who should be able to match up to Isako. The episode thus ends at that point.
Ooo... this show has really captured my interest as I'm blissfully enraptured by this extraordinarily rich world and interesting characters.

Haraken clearly isn't an imago-user/angouya/hacker/whatever, though; unlike Fumie's fuda or the symbols Isako seems to throw through the air, Haraken commands Sacchi with words alone. I half-wonder whether his father's status as a digital pet maker gives him some kind of inside knowledge of the digital world, but I suspect there's a lot more to it than that.
I find Yasako's supposedly focal role in the show a little odd at this point. If everything was entirely from her viewpoint I could almost understand her passiveness, but the way the show cuts between Yasako and Isako, and the fact that Yasako is ALWAYS with Fumie, slightly diminishes her role thus far. It's my only slight niggle about Dennou Coil; I think she's actually surprisingly interesting for someone who is so clueless about the world she's caught up in because she's very genuinely characterised, but after the first couple of episodes she's been sidelined a little in favour of the (admittedly awesome) Isako.
I do hope Dennou Coil's doing well in the ratings. It's genuinely the kind of show that should appeal to absolutely anyone, and I'd hate to see it not catching on in Japan for some reason.

You highlighted something I missed out. It is possible that he has more intimate knowledge of such AI systems and that a variant of the AI software is used in the Satchis for their independent movement and decision-making. With such knowledge, he has been able to exploit it.

It's not odd. It's obvious to me that she is the surrogate for viewers. We are learning about this augmented virtual reality world together with her just as she is discovering the finer details of it.

The pre-order for the DVDs are out. The plain edition Volume 1 DVD of Dennou Coil with 2 episodes in the volume is only going for ¥2,800 (without 5% sales tax levied on sales to residents of Japan). That's a damn cheap price for an anime DVD in Japan. And Amazon Japan is giving it a 25% discount for pre-orders (http://www.amazon.co.jp/%E9%9B%BB%E8%84%B3%E3%82%B3%E3%82%A4%E3%83%AB-1-%E9%80%9A%E5%B8%B8%E7%89%88-%E6%8A%98%E7%AC%A0%E5%AF%8C%E7%BE%8E%E5%AD%90-%E6%A1%91%E5%B3%B6%E6%B3%95%E5%AD%90-%E7%9F%A2%E5%B3%B6%E6%99%B6%E5%AD%90/dp/B000RO8P4W/). There's also the special limited edition Volume 1 going for ¥6,200 (without 5% sales tax levied on sales to residents of Japan) which has extra content (link (http://www.amazon.co.jp/%E9%9B%BB%E8%84%B3%E3%82%B3%E3%82%A4%E3%83%AB-1-%E9%99%90%E5%AE%9A%E7%89%88-%E6%8A%98%E7%AC%A0%E5%AF%8C%E7%BE%8E%E5%AD%90-%E6%A1%91%E5%B3%B6%E6%B3%95%E5%AD%90-%E7%9F%A2%E5%B3%B6%E6%99%B6%E5%AD%90/dp/B000RO8P4M/)).

Well, from the site that I don't know if I can link to (A****S***), there's a thread that deals with Japanese TV ratings. Apparently, Denno Coil's best rating was 3.0% on 5/12/07. The list stops at 1%. So for the week of 5/28-6/3, its rating was less than 1%.
It airs on Saturdays 6:30-6:55 PM.

Denno Coil is the best show of the season for me as of the last episode. The latest episode that's been subbed manages to be cute, serious, original, and playful at the same time. The battle scene was just awesome. The production values and writing are simply great. It's quite strange hearing Houko Kuwashima's voice in Claymore and then Denno Coil. Anyhow, her characters sound badass either way.
Edit: I just saw the episode preview. :D :D That butt came out of nowhere. :D
Yeah... episode 4 was so damn awesome...
You'd think that they'd be doing like these pissant little pranks, but they actually pull out all the stops...
It's was off the hook; I approve.

Episode 4:
- Time to meet Isako! Not that it gets anyone very far. Isako blows them off, pretends she's never met them, and eventually forbids them to ever talk to her again :sd:
- The bratty boys in the class decide to play some tricks on Yasako, spamming her with, well, spam. Fumie quickly counters, deletes it all at super speed and FUMIE BEAMs the original message. Yay!
- Daichi (the stupid kid) tries the same against Isako, and, well... talk about out of his league. At first she only seems to be deleting at the rate he spams, but then Yasako notes that she's also *writing an answer on the board at the same time*. Even more interestingly... she's not operating any cyber computer that they can see. No interface at all, actually. After nuking all the spam she sends it back Daichi tenfold and shorts out his system XD They make with the physical world jokes though (like... an upside down desk), and undoubtedly piss her off more, but she refuses to be provoked.
- Yasako takes a shot at getting friendly with her, but Isako wants nothing of it. She then goes on to psychoanalyze Yasako (too accurately for the other's comfort).
- Then the war begins. The brat crew set up an ambush with, well, machinegun-like drones shooting cyberbullets at Isako. Then they switch to rockets and then...
Describing it blow-by-blow would miss the point and be too confusing anyway, because it's not something I can describe well, but I sure as hell know I like it. Daichi and his lackets eventually get fried, while Fumie works a backdoor in to nab some data from Isako. Isako holds both attacking parties at bay until the very end. She beats Fumie soundly, but not before Fumie grabs some data. Mega-baa informs her later that, unfortunately, most of it is corrupted. But there's one piece that Yasako notices... "Michiko..."
Again, this is something that needs to be seen rather than read about. Only by watching it can you see Isako in all her supreme glory, reigning on her throne of overturned desks, the terrible and wonderful cybergoddess of Dennou Coil~~ She is, right now, pure awesome.

After looking at the cast of voice actors to the show, I suddenly realized that Houko Kuwashima, Romi Paku, and Fumiko Orikasa are in the same shows really often. Do they work for the same place, or is it just coincidence that they get cast together so frequently?

With this latest episode, Isako has risen to a level of true badassness that even Dante cannot hope to rival. The scene with her standing in front of the fire as the new leader of the Daikokui Hackers was BEYOND awesome. As usual, Denno Coil was really enjoyable and just an experience that put a wide smile on my face. It's nice to see that the little brother got punished. :D I want to make the butt my avatar, but too bad my computer can't take screenshots for some reason. For another random comment, I really love how the two sides, each with a mysterious member, are setting up for an epic conflict. I've always liked those epic two side battles. I'm so excited for the possibilities of what can happen for Denno Coil right now. I haven't had a show make me get me this excited in ages. If Denno Coil continues with as much quality, this show will definitely make it into my top 10.
By the way, those Satchii are probably going to chase me around in my nightmares. Nothing represents fear like "Boku Satchii!".

Yeah... man, the series has been like on a non-stop improvement; it's REALLY good.
SPOILS EPISODE 5; practice caution.
I mean, it's charming, but it has this fairly sophisticated charm as the interpretation of "space" comes across as intelligent and the kids actually act like kids, all having a good time while being kids.
Yeah, I was like:
"OH, that makes sense... of course the data wouldn't be updated. And of course she'd be able to get them to do her bidding."
And I liked the scene where everyone tried to restore their signal; that was awesome.
Ending where everyone joins up with Isako and Denpa is left contemplating the futility of his loyalty to Daichi was really amusing too.
Also, I was fond of the speculation that Daichi might actually have this crush on Fumie; it was cute and it's always neat to have little subplots like that... have a feeling that this might turn around though if he hangs out with Isako long enough, but I'm not sure.
And then there's the suspicion that someone else in the thing might be an encoder too; I'm intrigued.
But yeah... let's keep it going.

Episode 5:
- Fumie introduces Yasako to Haraken, number five in their little group.
- For whatever reason, Isako meets with Daichi and his thugs and promises to lead them to a huge source of metabugs. She says this when she knows Oyaji is watching for Fumie. So either she wants to use them to unearth some metabugs for herself, or she wants to get both factions together so she can take both out at once.
- The next day Isako drags Daichi's people around with her like whipped little bitches, and she's clearly having fun doing it. Fumie's group tails them all the way, undoubtedly playing right into Isako's hands.
- Oh yeah, Isako is messing with them XD She takes them to a bus graveyard, and has them dig inside the bus for metabugs. When they find none, she acts surprised and tells them to try another XD
- On and on they go, at her orders, until they strike big -- nice metabugs, except... they're mixed in with very explosive ones. She sneaks off while they dig and gives some hints into what she's looking for. Whatever it is, she definitely used Daichi's group for the grunt labor. She wants to find whatever she's looking for by setting off a chain reaction of explosions to release a lot of energy at once. What a wonderfully dangerous girl~
- Satchii time! Two of them enter the graveyard and start their attack. Then we find out that the young boy in Daichi's group is... her little brother Akira. She spanks him XD
- Isako completes her conquest of Daichi's gang! As she unleashes a huge amount of energy, the boys' bodies start to get corrupted. She promises to save them if they pledge loyalty to her. Even Daichi gives in enthusiastically in the end. Wahahaha!
- Haraken is no slouch either. As Yasako, Fumie and their pets get cornered by a Satchii, he steps in and makes the Satchii his bitch. Even Fumie is dumbfounded.

The gushing continues! :D (Yeah, I forgot to do so for Episode 6 :P )
Episode 7 ups the ante. Isako (the Ice Queen) lords it all over Daichi's gang but she's really only interested in capturing an illegal for purposes yet to be disclosed and has them doing sentry duty around an abandoned site while she goes to trap and capture an illegal.
Fumie and Yasako are tasked to look for a missing hamster cyberpet which results in them coming to the same abandoned site. Splitting up, Yasako bumps into her younger sister Kyoko who has been running around doing what little kids do naturally - exploring the area around where they live. They spot the hamster and go running after it but Kyoko, just like a real life little kid, is way too fast for Yasako and they lose each other.
Meanwhile, Isako has managed to trap an illegal but the activity around and inside the abandoned site gets her distracted and the illegal escapes. While searching for the illegal, she sees Yasako going into a sound-proof room which she has booby-trapped to catch illegals. Rushing in to pull Yasako from the room, she fails to do so in time and gets trapped within with Yasako.
Yasako takes the opportunity to try to break the ice with the Ice Queen. There is a crack in Isako's Ice Queen demeanour but she does want to be referred to as Isako. Amasawa, it is then.
While both Yasako and Amasawa are trapped in the room, Kyoko with the cyber hamster is pursued by the illegal as the illegal wants to hop into the cyberpet and take control. What eventually ensues is a nicely diretced piece of tension as Amasawa and Yasako try to get out from the room while they see Kyoko being chased by the illegal.
The rest, you will just have to watch.
The characterisation is just superb. Watch little Kyoko. The mannerisms of a little kid all captured perfectly.
This show just goes from strength to strength and right from the get-go (i.e. Episode 1). This is anime that needs to be watched. An excellent show which is mostly ignored by the denizens of the AoD forums - the ignorance is absolutely criminal.

Denno Coil is really special in that it has mass appeal. I've gotten my friends who absolutely hate anime to watch it. My dad watched the show with interest. I even actually got my mom, who is a fervent anti-Japanese person, to watch and enjoy Denno. Sometimes an anime is made that simply extends beyond just anime and its respective fans, and I think Denno Coil is one of those shows that is just pure art so far.

You still remember that, huh? I don't recall "ramming" the show down other people's throats though :P Just positive encouragement to try Now and Then, Here and There ("NTHT") and the cheap price it was going for helped a lot.

However, those that are vocal in the AoD forums in the General Anime Discussion threads are generally otakus rather than mainstream viewers. They have preset genres to watch and genres to avoid. There are not many who will watch genres outside their comfort zone or broadminded enough to give it a shot. It's hard to gauge the interest of lurkers as by definition, they lurk and seldom post. So, you have no idea whether they even watch the show.
Hence, the only way here is to post regarding the episodes of the show as we watch it and hopefully entice people to give this show a try.

It's not so much as scaring otaku away. More like otaku are mostly not interested in the premise. There's no mecha, no giant robos, no magical girls, etc. The usual usual. So, they either ignore it or have a cursory glance and see that it's not a show of the usual genres that they are interested in and avoid it.

While that may be cheap for Japan, it's still extraordinarily expensive for 50 minutes of content in R1. It certainly makes it something I wouldn't buy.
Well, if you're used to buying R2J anime DVDs as some of us here in the AoD forums are, it is cheap. It is not supposed to convince people who won't buy R2J anime DVDs, whether it is price or lack of English subtitles or both, to buy. Taking into account that this show may have a good chance on getting licensed for R1 release, I'm ready to wait but I'll also be hedging my bet on its R1 licensing by putting in a pre-order to take advantage of the 25% pre-order discount given by Amazon Japan.

And regular edition (stripped edition) is cheaper than what R1 paid for Gunbuster 2, Demon Prince Enma and WoR DVDs on the surface only. I also admit that a 2/3/3/3/3/3/3/3/3 release schedule with those prices would break a lot of wallets and cause loads of cursing here. :sd:
However, this is their baby. BV should release it properly here and not like FREEDOM imo. So, give 'em hell at Anime Expo guys! :>

All the more reason you should plunge right in and watch it raw. This will help you pick up some Japanese on the go when you reference right back to the subtitles when they come out later. At your age, you're still in learning mode and should be able to pick it up fast. You may just surprise yourself when you keep an open mind to watch it raw that you can start picking up snippets here and there, match it to what's happening on-screen, and get an idea of what's going on and what's being said by investigative deduction.

Episode 8 - Yukata!
And there's a lot more in Episode 8 that just made me smile. Like Haraken and Yasako pair off very well. Daichi is caught between a rock and a hard place. We now get confirmation that he likes Fumie but is unable to express it and when Fumie starts to soften, he is forced to issue a challenge to Fumie by Isako and his gang watching from afar.
They also give a tantalising glimpse as to what probably happens when a cyber pet is totally infected by an illegal.

While watching Denno Coil, I couldn't help but think about its relevance to the world today, which is another reason I like the show so much. When Fumie-chan remarks about how even losing digital pets is painful, I immediately thought about how often people get attached to digital things nowadays, such as WoW characters. The way Denno portrayed electronics withdrawal after Fumie and Yasako turn off their glasses was also a nice touch. Denno Coil works great in that not only simply provides smile-inducing entertainment, it adds a lot of commentary about the digital society and current generation of tech-proficient children. By the way, I really like how slowly Denno Coil is adding darker elements, such as dealing with death, that an ordinary all-ages show just wouldn't have. Haraken's aunt was really cool by the way. She looks cooler than Trinity in that black clothing.

Episode 6:
- Heh, Fumie and Yasako are wary of Haraken now, since he's turned out to be vastly more competent than they were prepared for.
- Seems like his research into illegals started when a girl named Kanna asked him to do it. But she was killed in a car crash one summer. Fumie is convinced he's a pawn of evil either way, and plans to get info from him as to how he's connected to the Satchii. He claims confidentiality and escapes with a cyber smokebomb :sd:
- This is a wonderfully laid back and cute episode. Unable to get dirt on Haraken by tailing him or asking Mega-baa, they resort to a biological observation of the Satchii in its natural habitat, and humor ensues.
- Kyoko keeps interrupting in their observatons, almost getting herself (well, her glasses and Densuke anyway) fried by some Satchii and Kyuu-chans. Just as she's about to get zapped though, Haraken steps in and slaps a pause on both. I wonder if Haraken is quite on Isako's level? If so, a duel would be... epic.
- Have I mentioned how incredibly satisfying it is to watch Fumie and Yasako interact? Especially as Yasako becomes more open and confident in herself, able to interact with Fumie as an equal, if not in coding skills than at least in strength of personality.
- The two come up with various schemes to investigate the flower shop lady who they believe is a secret agent of the Ministry of Post, which controls the Satchii. They fail, until Yasako suggests just powering off the glasses. Fumie never even thought about it :sd: But once they do, they feel like they've been completely cut off from the world. "Maybe it's too late for us to become normal kids again," says Yasako XD
- This gets them nowhere as well, so they try what they should have from the start. They ask Haraken. He explains that he had a fight with Kanna, and it's around then that she was killed in an accident. An accident from a cybernavi controlled automobile, and accident that shouldn't have been able to happen. Haraken believes she was killed by an Illegal that corrupted the cybernavi net. His ability to stop Satchii comes from his aunt, who works in the Daikoku Cyberspace Management department.
- And I think we just met Haraken's aunt XD When Yasako gets a call about Kyoko not being home, she and Fumie and Haraken go searching for her. Yasako finds her as she's about to get hit by a truck, but a mysterious lady in black riding a motorcycle (who we saw before) saves her. As Yasako is thanking her, Satchii comes... and the lady stops it just like Haraken does.
- Yep, his aunt, Tamako, a "lively 17 year old girl" who seems rather fond of Haraken :sd:
- And it looks like Yasako's dad has to deal with her at work too =P
- Haha, and Kyoko is obsessed with Tamako and her motorcycle now... I guess thats better than "Poop"?
Another top rate episode, particularly Fumie and Yasako's "research".
I really liked the sudden cut to Kyoko appearing in the middle of the road and exclamating: "Poop!"

Wow.. a lot of stuff happened in a small space of time at the end of this ep. I'll try to summarize the bits that sunk in (and that I vaguely understood)
Background: Daichi's gang (bar Fumie's brother who is youger), Yasako, Fumie, Harakan and.. is it Aiko? are staying over at the school for the night with a couple of teachers and Daichi's dad. They have a party, the Teachers leave them in tents in the classtoom while they have some fun of their own. After telling ghost stories they start a kimodameshi, with metatag-created dennou monsters along the way. Yasako's team is one short, but they are joined by their teacher who is drunk as a skunk on chocolate liquors.
Isako is also skulking around the school, and Haraken's aunt is watching from the outside.
Now the good stuff:
Michiko emerges from inside a kirabug; she is white apparition like a tiny girl with long hair and a creepy laugh.
Haraken's Aunt can make metatags the same as Megaba, but hers generate the sort of geometric patterns that Isako uses. She uses one to hack Sacchi so it can enter the school grounds.
Michiko creates a bright light and within it a virtual space. Haraken enters, dials 4423 on an old-style dial phone, speaks to Kanna, passes out.
Isako traps Michiko and invites it to enter her, which is does, leaving a glowing keyhole. She can now block Sacchi's beams without moving a muscle or putting up any barriers.

There is something cool about watching Clare and then Isako in succession. :D
As for the episode, it was excellent. Denno Coil manages to be cute, humorous, tense and thought-provoking at the same time. In addition, the creative people have nailed the mannerisms of children ridiculously well, which makes it even more fun to watch. Isako and Yasako's character development this episode was just great. Seeing Isako start to open up like so many other cold Houko Kuwashima characters was smile-inducing stuff. In addition, though the theme of friendship and cooperation is usually really trite and overdone, the episode was written well enough that it seemed quite fresh and stood out from the numerous other "friendship rules!" shows I've seen. As of now, Denno Coil is just a great experience where everything manages to come together, something that rarely happens. The music , though it doesn't stand well for stand-alone listening, works excellently with the show. The opening and closing themes are wonderful. (I'm definitely going to be importing the single when I can.) The animation is probably Madhouse's best this season. The character development is great. The action is great. The writing is also excellent. The show even has some nice commentary on technology. Denno Coil is just a culmination of everything I love, not just in anime, but in any creative work at this point. Seeing as episode 9 raises the bar further, I really don't see Denno Coil screwing up now. The fact that this show is getting as little recognition as it's getting on these forums is criminal, though it does look like this show has a pretty good chance of getting licensed.
Something, you helped hype up Nanoha and Haruhi. Help Denno Coil some too! :P

Episode 7:
- Fumie and Yasako get busy with a job Mega-baa assigned to them - finding Tome's cyber hamster and therefore hopefully getting a piece of a treasure it has the coordinates to (a kirabug).
- And Isako is busy as well - being evil cyber queen to her stupid harem of lackeys XD They try to question her authority, and she just gives them a withering look, and I'm pretty sure they all need to change their underwear now.
- Isako and her team wind up crossing paths (unknowingly at first) at an old abandoned complex where Tome's hamster is hiding. Kyoko pops in as well. Meanwhile, Isako has located an illegal and gets her key inserted right away, so it can't degrade.
- But Isako screws up. Something invisible knocks the illegal from her grasp, and it runs away with her key still in it. Isako runs after it and sees Yasako walking into a trap she set for the illegal, and when she goes to pull her out, she gets caught too. Oops.
- Heh, I'm liking Yasako more each episode. Isako tries to pass the blame off on her, and Yasako reacts with this look of complete and utter "are you fucking shitting me? I don't *think* so" XD
- They see Kyoko run by, holding the hamster but being chased by the illegal, which wants to enter the pet.
- As Daichi and his people are discussing the legends behind kirabugs, Fumie runs by looking for Yasako. Daichi tries to start shit with him, and she hits him in the face with a FUMIE-BEAM XD
- Yasako wins some more XD She's not scared of Isako anymore, and even gets a little uppity with her. I'm loving it, because it just shows how quickly she's grown as a character from the beginning.
- Kyoko runs by again and this time sees them, but instead of helping just points and laught heartily. And then gets chased by the illegal some more :sd:
- Isako launches into an interesting story that half seems made up to scary Yasako, and half makes perfect sense in the context of the show. Illegals' ultimate goal, she says, is to inhabit a human kid's body, and uh, eat their soul. She's having a lot of fun freaking Yasako out, but you can't help but think that she's precisely one of those kids who has, in urban legend at least, been taken over by an illegal... Her attempts to tame the illegals could certainly be connected to her quest to purge herself of the illegal inside her, if that's the case.
- At the end she says it's all a joke, that an Illegal is just a virus after all, and she has a good laugh at Yasako's expense. Whatever else was going to come of it is headed off by Yasako turning into a human antenna, boosting the signal temporarily just enough for Isako to nullify her encoding trap and escape the room. Just in time, because a Kyuu-chan is bearing down on both the illegal and Kyoko.
- Kyoko is cornered on a rickety old walkway and a Kyuu-chan bears in on her. Isako slaps a lock on it at the last moment, and then we get a great scene where Isako shows some pretty obvious concern for Kyoko, and eventually rescues her from the collapsing walkway. Yasako thanks her before Isako leaves, and asks if they really can't be friends. Isako still rebuffs her but in a decidedly less confident manner. Nobody knows exactly what will happen in this world, indeed.
Wonderful episode, the only downside being not enough Fumie. But they make up for it with uppity Yasako XD
There is something cool about watching Clare and then Isako in succession. :D
Haha, I'm doing the exact opposite, Coil then Clare.
Something, you helped hype up Nanoha and Haruhi. Help Denno Coil some too! :P
Heh, Nanoha and Haruhi are something entirely different for me, and rank head and shoulders above any other series I've watched and so I'm that much more motivated to push those shows. It's obvious that Madhouse's budget was mostly diverted towards Denno Coil and Oh!edo. While Claymore does have decent animation, it still isn't as good as the real fluid and detailed stuff in those two aforementioned shows.
If you thought that those 2 shows looked good, you should see the last 2-3 episodes of Death Note; visuals for that were friggin' AMAZING.
Oh yeah, Devil May Cry is really good too, but the animation sort of slipped in episode 3.
(gotta find the thread)
That said, Denno's best visual asset (unlike Death Note, which has its brilliant moments, but still suffers from some weird looking episodes) is the sheer consistency; it just feels almost dead-locked for some reason.

Denno Coil 10 - I like how it seems to alternate between episodes that focus on the arc plot and the flashier effects, and episodes that concentrate on the emotional core.
And with Episode 10, we get plot, story AND character development WITH emotional core. The bar has already been set sky-high by the previous episodes. This episode raises it even higher.
It's dropping some teasing hints - could 4423 that Yasako met when she was younger be Isako's older brother?. There's also Kanna who seems to be leaving clues for them and leaving messages for Haraken (probably in part to help him to find closure?). For those fans of Isako, we get to see more of her softer side.
The preview of Episode 11 just made me wide-eyed in great anticipation. Can it get any flashier? :D
Like a broken record playing the same tune over and over again, I find myself compelled to repeat - "This show is stunningly brilliant."

I mesnt to post yesterdsy but fell asleep. My memory is now a day old so I may miss or confuse stuff.
This weeks is an immensly entertaining episode.
Daichi goes illegal hunting with Denpa. Kyouko finds him one of those black holes (don't know how?) and he goes fishing (with one of Megaba's rods) until they are interrupted by a Q-chan. After making thei escape they find they are not empty-handed.. they really did land an actual fish, only it is very tiny. Daichi takes it home to examine, they are worried about it dissolving but it somehow produced a cube of water around itself and swims around perfectly happily inside. Daichi treats it like a real pet fish and feeds it bits of data peeled away from corrupted areas on the street. Periodically it gets larger, and so does it's water cube.
While Daichi is asleep it breaks through his wall and the cube expands into the air outside his window, now rapidly expanding. A couple of Q-chan's come to take a look, and it shoots water at them, which forms another cube adjoining the first, then eats them. This alerts Takako(?), who goes to investigate with a couple of Sacchis, which get half eaten by the fish requiring an emergency shutdown. She rescues Daichi who is sulking in the street. Yasako and Fumie meet up with them, as does Megaba who is know to Takako - who is actually the second member of the Dennou agency and still wears the badge (explaining her use of metatags in an earlier episode). Megaba created a metatag vaccine, which Fumie uses to create a big plug hole, but only after Takako releases Daichi and Daichi apologises. Without water the fish reverts to it's original size and is destroyed by a passing Sacchi.
Best moments:
Kyouko saying "Unchi unchi unchi!" and Daichi interpreting.
Kyouko finally calling him Daichi and him saying "It's not Daichi, it's Unchi!"
Normal people without glasses carrying on as normal despite being underwater.
Suspension of belief:
Two people only feet away from each other on either side of a wall of digital water cannot understand each other despite there being nothing physically there to distort sound waves.

Episode 12 is just brilliant on so many levels! This is so far the best episode of Dennou Coil to-date.
I laughed so hard watching this episode and yet was completely astounded by the "concept" it threw at us. Needs to be watched to be truly appreciated. Tempted to post just one screenshot but I do not want to spoil your first time experience watching it.
Considering how excellent nearly all the episodes have been, this episode takes it to a level that may be extraordinarily difficult to surpass.
*Gives Dennou Coil - Episode 12 the standing ovation it truly deserves*

Guess I'll post 8-10 together under this post about 10, since they all just came out at once. Also, Andrew, can you please change subject lines when you post about a new ep (say, "Dennou Coil Ep. 10" or even just "ep10", etc)? Thanks~
Episode 8:
- Ooh things are getting complicated. Haraken's aunt is investigating something at the school, and seems particularly interested in Yasako and Isako. Yasako reveals that her dad is the one who named Satchi (hah) and Haraken receives Kanna's glasses from her mother, who wants him to unlock them and find out what happened.
- Summer festival! Isako has Daichi and his gang setting up a trap for Fumie et al. Yasako arives in her kimono looking cute, and Haraken gets flustered XD
- But Fumie is even cuter! Aww <3 Also, Kyouko is kicking Daichi's ass. Go Kyouko, hah.
- Daichi declares his duel, but not in the way he wanted to, since he's flustered as well at seeing Fumie. Heh. But with 30 minutes before they can really do the duel (Daichi has to wait for Isako), Yasako suggests they go around the festival together. ...Btw, who the hell is this Aiko girl with them? o_O I guess she's vaguely familiar as another Coil member, and we saw her earlier in the ep, but I dunno. At any rate, Haraken definitely has a thing for Yasako, and is interpreting her interaction with Daichi in entirely the wrong way.
- But wow I think Isako just beat both Yasako and Fumie in the cuteness department, mostly because she looks so different from normal. Isako I love you~ With her there now, it's time to declare the duel.
- Except Daichi can't do it. He's finally realizing how he feels about Fumie, and what isako is telling him to do would make Fumie hate him forever. Oh the drama!
- Just as things are getting good, he glances over his shoulder and sees Isako, and knows he has to go through with it. She's also tempting him with the promise of telling him things about this "Michiko" thing that's been mentioned a couple times. He screams out that he hates Fumie, and they set up the duel, with the losers forbidden to wear glasses for the rest of the summer.
- At the same time, Haraken and Yasako had encountered an illegal. Haraken eventually recognizes it as Kuro/Chloe/whatever, a pet that belonged to Kanna, if I remember right. Just as he's about to reach out to it, a Kyuu vaporizes it. Not before it leaves behind a little stone of sorts for Haraken though...
Episode 9:
- I love how the "kid's net rumors" aspect of the world is integrated into everything. Especially all this mysterious "Michiko" talk. It's ful of childish innocence, even as it becomes clear that there's nothing innocent about what's behind the illegals, Kanna's death, and Isako's personal mission.
- Maiko-sensei is love <3 She does a "summer camp" for the biology club in order to patch up differences between the two sides, though she doesn't know they're engaging in another cyber war that night.
- Daichi, trying to use Fumie's weakness to scary stories against her, tells one of the many variations on the Michiko story. Haraken, who is interested in the Michiko stories from a folklore perspective, tells another one he heard from elsehwere, and succeeds in freaking out not just Fumie, but *everyone* :sd:
- And as they do that, Isako is busy working on another illegal, and things get weird...
- Bwhahaha, at the last minute they realize the numbers are uneven. 4 Coils vs. 5 Hackers. So who stimbles along but a very drunk Maiko-sensei XD LOGIC DOESN'T WORK WITH DRUNKS (http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t299/anon09876/DennouCoil-09Anoni02358421-15-03.png)! XD AHAHAHAHAHAHH XD
- Oh wow shit is getting intense. And awesome. Yasako goes with drunken Maiko while Fumie's little brother and hat guy go in for Daichi's team. Haraken's aunt hacks her Sacchi into the school grounds, and Yasako chases down a strange little glowing person with a creepy laugh that came out of the illegal she captured o_O Haha christ, this is awesome. Oh, and points to Yasako, she's getting good at this cyber combat stuff =D
- Oh man, this episode just raised the fucking bar, and I don't mean slightly. Haraken's disturbing phone conversation (4423!), Isako merging with "Michiko" (again? that's her second keyhole...) and that Sacchi staring in the window at the end... Also, just went back to ep 2, it's there that Yasako has the "4-4-2-3" dream. 2-3 (ni-san) probably means just that, nii-san, because the voice claims to be her brother. But what's the yon-yon part? Hmmmmmmm~~
God damn. Just... god damn. What an incredible show, and this is on par with the CYBER WAR episode earlier on. EPISODE 10!
Episode 10:
- Picking right up where we left off... ISAKO IS FUCKING SCARY. She just blows up the Sacchi like it's a piece of junk mail. She's just... wow. Wooooow. Isako is amazing. And frightening. She calls out Haraken's aunt, swears to keep collecting Illegals/Michikos, and disappears. The two sides call off the duel considering the circumstances, though Daichi tries to claim victory. Later that night, Yasako overhears Haraken watching Kanna's diary, and looks a bit depressed.
- The next day Isako says that they failed because they didnt confiscate Fumie et al's glasses, and she kicks Daichi out of his own club. Denpa quits too, opting to stay with Daichi, who declares the formation of a new group, the Pioneer Hackers.
- Ah Isako and her throne of desks again =D She's in contact with... whoever that is, again, saying that she's merged with another illegal-michiko-thing. And that somehow this all comes back to her... brother?
- Haraken meets with Fumie and Yasako to investigate the route he was given when he experienced that disturbing phone call during the chaos. He shys away from telling them where he got it (it's a bit weird, as he says). They try getting from beginning to end the short way, but nothing happens. Yasako suggests they redo it in the exact way the map indicates.
- Taking a break, Haraken goes over the 4423 thing again, when Yasako remembers something that happened to her when she was younger. She had lost sight of Densuke when a boy, perhaps a little older than her, helped her find him. She thanked him and they sit and chat awhile. She asks his name, and he tells her his code name: 4423. He's also the one that gives her the Yasako nickname. He says she should be his apprentice/follower, and she replies "No way, I'm going to be 4423's lover!" and kisses him on the cheek XD
- They complete the route, and doing so acts as a password, unlocking obsolete space and a letter which itself has a password on it -- for Kanna's glasses. When Yasako notices that they were looking at it upside down, Mega-baa is able to unlock it, though the process will run for a few days. Yasako does get a glimpse at one piece of it. Kanna's diary. She comes to the end, reads the last entry... and returns it to Haraken, saying it's not for her to see. That entry was one where Kanna said she was off to the crossing, and how when she returned she would tell Haraken she loved him. Yasako feels terrible for having read such a personal bit of information, and Haraken cries when he reads the entry. Yeah, Dennou Coil indeed does the emotional, character-interaction stuff just as well as it does awesome cyber-warfare.
- The episode ends with two rapid fire character introductions. One is Isako's uncle, someone she seems to be very fond of and open to, though she seems to dislike her aunt. The other is a young man who knows "the route" and snaps photographs of Haraken and Yasako from a distance, and seems interested in the fact that they seem to know the route as well.
Ah, three stunning episodes. And it looks like 11 will be setting some crazy shit in motion. I look forward to it.

How can you now in good conscience not rate this show as the best this season? ;)
Because I just watched Lucky Star 16... oh my god.
At any rate, Nanoha and LS have an unfair advantage over all other Spring shows. They were conceived from the union of awesome and godly and could do nothing other than ascend into a position of profound greatness seldom known by humanity. So it's not really right for me to directly compare them to the other shows, and so I really try not to.
Put them aside and Dennou Coil is one of the four next best, in no order: Dennou Coil, Claymore, Touka Gettan, El Cazador. Hmm, might even go so far as to put it on top of that pile, though tied with El Cazador.
At any rate, they're all mind-blowingly fantastic so thinking about it too hard just takes away from the time that I could be sputtering over their greatness.

I don't like to cuss, but episodes 8, 9, and 10 were fan-fucking-tastic. I stayed up real late waiting to watch those episodes, and even though I was extremely groggy, the first few minutes of episode 8 were able to snap me awake immediately.
First of all, the humor was great, cute stuff. I'm still amazed at how closely the writers were able to nail childhood behavior and I couldn't help but to giggle as I watched stuff that reminded me of what I did in elementary school.
Besides the humor, Denno Coil also began to grow darker much to my glee and added another dimension to the show with "Michiko-san", even though it was awesome and fun before. That laughter was creepy by the way. :D Haraken has just proven to be a really interesting character along with Isako. Haraken's attempt to deal with the past and wish to discover the truth behind Kanna's death made him quite striking, while Isako is still an enigma. One thing I love about Denno Coil is how much is still left unknown in the show. Like Isako, Denno Coil still remains an enigma to me. I see the subtle commentary about technology, the ever increasing influence of computers, and children, but I still have no clue what the themes might be, and I'm having a really fun time thinking about that stuff. I know that eventually, there will be on episode where a lightbulb suddenly pops into my head and I know what's going on. I LOVE shows that make me do that. :neko:
Anyhow, I always want to know more, and the Denno Coil is excellent in its deliberate revelations. Denno Coil is also doing an impressive job of showing, instead of telling, something I always applaud. Bring on Episode 11! :D
At this rate, Denno Coil will definitely have a chance of getting into at least my top 10 shows. Strangely enough, however, I still can't crown Denno Coil as my absolute, uncontested favorite show of the season yet. I'm also enjoying Darker than Black to an awesome degree as well right now as it satisfies me in a different way that Denno Coil can't really fulfill. Granted, those two shows now range far and wide above the shows in my next group of favorites, Claymore, Bokura no, and Seirei no Moribito, though I adore those shows immensely as well, just not to the extreme degree that I like Denno Coil and Darker than Black.
Man, I still can't get over how good the spring season has been. The spring crop of shows was just ...supercalifragilicious.
Edit: I'm just going to throw out some random speculation and say that 4423 is Isako's brother...it definitely looks like that's the case anyhow.

Shit yeah, more so soon~ Sometimes the translations being very behind isn't have bad, if you don't realize how behind that is. Four eps in a row =D
Episode 11:
- Daichi hatches his GREAT COMEBACK PLAN! 1) find an illegal 2) plunge your hand into it 3) withdraw metabug 4) profit! ...or cyberdeath.
- Wow, Daichi speaks poopanese. He and Denpa run into Kyouko, and she tells them that she's seen what they assume is an illegal.
- Interesting... Kyouko somehow *hears* and locates an obsolete space, leading them straight to it. She also continues to make a fool out of Daichi. It seems like she can handle him better than anyone XD
- And... and they do find an illegal. A tiny, tiny little fish. But that tiny fish is surrounded by water... and grows, and grows and... And Daichi is obsessed with it. Bwhahaa. Seriously though, I want to know how Kyouko was able to find that obsolete space o_O There's something strange about her we haven't been privy to yet...
- So Daichi teaches Denpa how to steal flakes of textures off of obsolete space and feed it to the 'goldfish' illegal. The Illegal especially likes red ones ...I think some Sacchis aren't going to survive this episode.
- Wahaha, illegal grows enormous, and chews its cyber way through Daichi's walls. Then it eats a kyuu-chan o_O
- Fumie is gloriously evil. She refuses to help Daichi and Denpa unless they... BOW TO HER XD Fantastic.
- But it's too late, Haraken's aunt already has a hold of Daichi and says he's under arrest XD Then Mega-baa speeds off to the scene as well, eager to get in on the action. Everyone converge on the illegal!
- And two Sacchis nearly bite the dust before Haraken's aunt does an evergency shutdown on them. Illegal loves red things after all. But it hates black things, which saves her from being eaten :sd: While she's glad... she's also slightly jealous that it prefers Sacchis to her XD
- This is just an absolutely breathtaking show to watch sometimes. The sight of the city "underwater" while everyone moves about freely (and those with glasses have no idea anything is happening) as if there were no water at all is thirteen million kinds of awesome. The imagination and creativity behind this show make me soooooo happy~
- Tamako! Harakawa Tamako is her name (which I think I read before, can't remember), and she's... Coil Agent #2! XD She knows Mega-baa, and asks her for her help. There's some reference to a rocky past between the two, and Tamako apologizes for something, Mega-baa accepts, and prints a metatag that will work as a vaccine against the virus.
- But Fumie continues to be evil and it makes me love her all the more. She grabs the tag and first begs for Daichi's release (Tamako grudgingly agrees), but then makes him bow down and admit his defeat in the duel as well as apologize. I think Daichi is thoroughly humiliated by now :sd:
- They apply the tag, drain the water, and a Sacchi fries the illegal. Case solved~~
Pure fun, and hugely imaginative. Great ep.

With scintillating hints about the past, Megabaa and Haraken's aunt have become even more interesting characters...that and the revelation about the wetting was pretty funny. :D Fumie was the most badass character in this episode, a role usually fulfilled by Isako. I absolutely love the characters in Denno Coil anyhow. Everyone gets their own moments, even fat Denpa. :)
Ironically, what once were the scariest things in the Denno Coil world got easily torn up in this episode by the giant fishy. It seems that as the series goes alone, those Sacchies are getting weaker and weaker. I felt bad for the fishy as well after it got fried at the end because I own some goldfishies too.
I still keep on forgetting how awesome the comedy in Denno Coil is. Aside from the really fantastic and original cyber-action, more serious revelations, and character development, some bits are just piss-in-your-pants hilarious. The funny moments in Coil easily rival the moments from series entirely dedicated to comedy from this season for me. Next episode looks to have more silly moments in store with Daichi's "character" development. :D Me love Denno Coil. :neko:

Well, wasn't that a sad episode?
Denpa has been feeding metabugs to a Nessie illegal in a digital fog area, but it is a contruction site so they need to move it somewhere else. Yasako somehow finds a new home, but since the illegal doesn't like bright light or white things they have to somehow move it there through shady areas with no white paint or tiles on the ground, all before it disintegrates from spending too long away from the old-version space. They fail, it dies. Boohoo.
And did I read right that there are no more eps till the end of the month?

It's such a damn shame that after so many ludicrously awesome episodes, Denno Coil is on hiatus until August 25th. There'll also be a recap, though unlike countless others in anime this one was evidently pre-planned early in the production.

Oh...my...god...episode 12 made Denno Coil even better than it already was. I got pure happiness from watching that episode.
First off, that episode was outrageously hilarious and made me erupt in explosive laughter multiple times throughout the episode's duration. Daichi's dad's declaration regarding nudity was awe-inspiring. The "digital civilization beards" was managed to be ridiculous, comical, and insanely original all at the same time. First just watching hair sprout up on everyone's face gave me the giggles. Watching the civilizations develop and nuclear war erupt ripped me into pieces.
The episode was also surprisingly somber and serious at times, in the midst of all the crazy events happening. I never even thought that Denno Coil would tackle anti-war themes, but the it certainly did this episode and even did it quite well.
Denno Coil is solidified in my top 10 now, for sure. Now, on to episode 13!

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! Why must there be a recap episode and delay?!
While episode 13 was not as funny or original as the previous episode, I liked this one even better. Why? Because this episode showed that Denno Coil could just as easily tug at an audience's heart along with making its audience laugh or captivating its audience with fantastic originality. I loved the sad mood this episode created in contrast to Denno Coil's previous lightheartedness
Throughout Denno Coil, illegals have been slowly built up. At the begining, they were deemed as just "viruses," but they've gradually become a metaphor for lost things looking for a place they can be.
Through the illegals, Denno Coil presents the basic question of what life actually is and how this line can become blurred in this new digital age. Life was once only applied to organic substances, but as technology continues to advance, can something digital take a "life" of its own as well? It's a bit strange and scary to think about that, but it's food for thought nonetheless.
Denno Coil manages to be deep and exquisitely fun at the the same time, something that's rarely done well. That Plesiosaur was cute by the way.
I'm feeling too giddy now thanks to Denno Coil, so I guess it's time for me to start rewatching Now and Then, Here and There! :)

Unfortunately, I'm not sure whether NTHT would make a good discussion topic. The thing with NTHT is that while it definitely is a thoughtful series that requires turning on your brain while watching, NTHT's themes are presented in a straightforward and clear manner that's easily understood, whereas other series such as Lain or Boogiepop make much better discussion fodder because of their much more obscure and convoluted nature that makes things much more open to debate and differing interpretations. I made an NTHT discussion a while back, and after several posts, everyone just began to rehash and reiterate what already had been said, because frankly, everything had already been covered in the first few posts. Part of the reason why NTHT appeals to me so much is the simplicity of its depth. The themes are clear-cut, yet so profound.

And oh shit, I almost started watching episode 13 before I realized I haven't seen 12 yet...
Episode 12:
- Ah, all it takes is about 5 seconds of the OP to get me in the mood again.
- Daichi (tormented by what he had to do last episode) and Denpa continue looking for illegals and metabugs and such. What I find interesting is how nicely Kyoko has been integrated into his sorry little group. She follows them around like a puppy. One that bites and shits on the rug. And even as she's beating the crap out of Daichi, you can see him growing completely used to her, as if she were his little sister. It's pretty cool.
- Haha, <3 Yasako. Daichi brings Kyoko home to Yasako, whose first reaction is "No way, you didn't kidnap her did you?" XD
- Oh god it gets even worse for him. The next day he brings her back again, and while he's handing her over, Kyoko half wakes up and kisses him right on the mouth XD Yasako gives him this look of disgust and tells him never to come near Kyoko again. Poor Daichi :sd:
- ....Then Daichi sprouts a beard. A beard made of an illegal o_O
- So does Kyouko? O_O It spreads by kissing... and other forms of contact XD Yasako and Fumie with beards... ahahaha, this si disturbing and hilarious and wierd and... what the fuck XD
- The illegal beard creatures are... evolving o_O They've formed cities, and transportation and... this is just utterly surreal.
- Not only that, Mega-baa finds a way to interpret their conversations. AND, to communicate with them. WERID WEIRD WEIRD WEIRD
- And Yasako gets addicted to communicating with them, like some kind of virtual pet XD
- Or more like a god game. She sees all and knows all, and tells the illegal people how to avoid danger. They make her their patron saint.
- And it's spread to everyone in town almost. Sacchi are busy shooting people in the face to kill the infestation XD
- "Go do work! It'll be finished in three turns after all." Oh my god, she's playing a fucking god-game/turn-based RPG with little cyber people living on her face. That needed to be bolded, because it utterly blows my mind.
- The people in Daichi's beard are at war, carpetbombing each other o_O
- ...They launched nukes. Yasako's beard people JUST INVENTED NUCLEAR WARFARE. And now Fumie and Haraken are acting as an SDI to interept interfacial ballistic missiles in orbit.
- But they it spreads to... interstellar war o_O Their faces are nuking each other.
- Finally they settle on listening to their god (Yasako) and migrating together to a new place. The old bald dude'a head :sd: Some time later though, they've gone. Off to find where they came from, to find some meaning in life. It's their journey for self discovery :sd:
I think I just watched one of the most creative episodes of anime ever made. Not necessarily the best or anything like that (it was essentially meaningless in the larger story, though fun to see everyone together), but the sheer imagination the creators have utterly FLOORS me. Awesome!

Episode 13:
- Denpa is raising the Loch Ness Illegal? We get some interesting background on the illegals to flesh them out a bit more. Then some specifics on this one's situation. There's a buiding to be erected on the spot it's living in, and so Yasako, Haraken and Denpa work on a way to move it to another, safer area. The problem is just getting it there before it corrupts.
- They stop to see Tamako. But she's not at the office, instead she's... at school. An all girls' school. And she's in uniform... =D SO CUTE!
- Fumie finally agrees to help them out. She engages in a bit of cyber terrorism against the construction project, though it doesn't really slow them down. And Sacchi is going to be allowed entry into Long Neck's domain the next day...
- Well they try and fail. This isn't an episode that evokes much discussion (unlike last ep), and definitely isn't one of the best, but even at its worse Coil is better than most shows.
But no more until the 25th? And then what sounds like recap at that? Damnit, not cool. Oh well. Gives me time to catch up on other stuff -_-

Not quite related to episode discussion, but I just wanted to mention how excellent Denno Coil's soundtrack is. I thought the music fit the show excellently from the beginning, but didn't feel as if it would provide a good standalone listening experience, so I was wavering over whether or not I should import the soundtrack. My fanboyism of Denno Coil won out, so I decided to take the risk. I was not disappointed to say the least and found that the music worked even better separated from the series. Though there are a couple of bad synthy tracks, the rest of the music is quite spectacular, with quite a bit of harp, clarinet, and drums. Like the series itself, most of the music is delightfully playful, but there are also some more poignant tracks. There is also one Celtic-sounding piece that is absolutely spectacular. The soundtrack is a great value to boot, and the release includes two discs worth of music for the price of one, so there is no second soundtrack that has to be purchased. I'm really satisfied and would recommend it to anyone who collects soundtracks and stuff.

I'll respond to this part of the thread since more or less episode 10 is as far as I've seen giving an idea of how far I can discuss right now. So far it's been quite interesting, but in some ways kind of confusing. I think the main confusion comes from the whole cyberspace aspect. I mean either cyberspace has advanced to the point its literally effecting the real world. Or the characters themselves figuratively live in cyberspace and are nothing more than computer programs. Ah well maybe they'll explain it eventually.
Edit: Oh yeah I almost forgot one thing that needs to be said is this. Saitchii is more or less a bully when you think about it. :sd:

The cyber world is laid over the real world--so a little bit of both. The kids have cyber bodies as well as real bodies, but getting your cyber body messed up won't actually hurt you. They can see their pets, but they can't feel them. Everything in the cyber world is essentially a visual representation of something abstract (e.g. viruses, spam).

Ah okay that explains it a bit better. Although to be honest the idea of giving spam visual representation is scary. Still in the end it does create a strange world set up that works in a rather weird way, but that may be part of the appeal.

On a random note, I gotta say that the OP/ED single for Denno Coil is great stuff. Both the OP and ED are quite different in their full form, and the longer version of the ED is especially better than its tv-size counterpart. I usually despise Jpop, but Ayako Ikeda has a great enough voice that I like both the ED and the OP very much. The bonus song ain't bad either. I'm gonna have this CD and the OST in my playlist for quite a while.

Yes!
In sticking to a singular group I'm a bit behind here, but wow 11 & 12 were Fantastic. 11's a strong contender for my favorite episode of the year, and 12 isn't far behind, they're both so incredibly imaginative and, just as importantly, well executed.

Jeez, after rewatching those episodes with subs, I just laughed my ass off. :D Even though Denno Coil is still much more than a comedy, for me at least, Denno Coil is THE funniest show of the season. I absolutely love situational humor that does not reference other stuff whatsoever.
By the way, in addition, this series got so much more dramatic. I<3<3<3<3 Denno Coil.

Jeez, I can't believe I overlooked something so huge.
It only hit me moments ago that one of the largest themes in Denno Coil was about the blurring between what actually exists and what does not. At this point in Denno Coil, one of the fantastic things is that you don't know if what you are watching is actually happening, or just completely a digital effect of the glasses. "Digital" things are able to cause huge explosions that shake the ground and even tear apart clothing.
Another touch I really loved was the fact that many of the urban legends referenced some myths. One of those urban legends in particular about how one cannot take off his glasses and "see" before exiting in old space without losing one's soul is really reminiscent of some ancient legends and stories. Considering that there was some relatively "mythological" imagery in the last episode, episode 14, it doesn't surprise me at all now that I think about it. Still, I REALLY can't believe Denno Coil is just a children's show. There's plenty of sweet humor that children will laugh at, but the dialogue, lines, and imagery are so layered that I doubt a standard 11 year old kid will pick up a substantial amount of that.

Yessssssss, three episode Coil mini marathon time <3 Orgasmic.
Episode 14:
- Ah... right. Recap. I guess thats not too surprising after nearly a month long break and a show coming into its second half. Well, maybe it'll be okay. I mean, I liked the Geass recaps, only because I got to hear Lelouche talk for 22 minutes. Akira doesn't quite have the same effect. :sd:
- Heh, I like the the way his voice picks up and gains emotion when he switches to talking about Yasako. "It's not related at all but... I'm attracted to gentle women..."
- Wahahaha, Akira getting spanked in front of Yasako - "This is the worst memory of my life. In the future I'm going to become a lawyer or a public prosecutor, sue my sister and make her culpable." ...Except illegially recorded video is inadmissible in court. XD
- Ok, Akira is cracking me up. "It's not related at all but... I'm REALLY attracted to women with big breasts." Akira, you're awesome! Muahaha. Tamako IS pretty damn hot...
- This is a great recap so far. "It's not related at all but... I'm really attracted to courageous women..." He's totally horny for everyone. Which makes perfect sense for someone his age.
- Hah! Nice, seeing Mizzet in the hospital room when isako visits her uncle was indeed for a reason. That's pretty awesome, they way they led up to this recap all along. So now Akira alone knows that Isako has another side to her.
- Ahahaa, Mizzet got some action XD
- ...And Fumie is totally going to kick his ass. She hears all, sees all... You underestimate her, Akria.
- Oooooh. First off, the Midget series that Mizzet totally banged seems to be following Haraken. And Haraken almost just walked in front of a car at that fateful crossing, only to be stopped by the man we saw photographing them in 13.
- And... he's creepy. And drops all sorts of cryptic hints in Haraken's lap. And he knows about Kanna...
I'm also guessing he's Isako's brother (the little dolls certainly look like the two of them) as well as 4423.
Anyway, I feel bad for anyone who skips this thinking it's mindless filler :sd:

Denno Coil does not feel like a slice-of-life show show whatsoever, but in essence, it is a slice-of-life feel in how it deals with the intricate nature of "every day life." At this point, I've kind of realized that it isn't quite the maddening originality, as great as it is, that makes this show so "flashy" for me, but how they go in describing these events that make all the circumstances so riveting.

Episode 15:
- Direction poop! XD Oh how embarrassing for Yasako :sd:
- Huh, Yasako wanders around a neighborhood on the other side of the station. It feels really nostalgic for her, but she's interrupted by three boys who mistake her for Isako (well, they got the given name right...)
- She's saved by a boy (who looks familiar... hell all four of these kids look kinda like variants on the other characters :sd: ) who also knows about Isako. He shows Yasako a code left behind by her. And it's damn funny when he ask if she knows about Isako, and she sort of stumbles and then goes... "zenzen!"
- The boy's name is Takeru, and he likes Yasako too. She's quite the guy magnet, isn't she =P
- They get to talking and she tells him about her dream she's trying so hard to remember. He seems interested (in her at least), and they spend the day searching for the torii-gated stairway Yasako remembers.
- No luck though. Takeru muses that it may indeed not "exist"... but that doesn't mean they can't get there. In other words, old space. But with Satchii all over first district lately, old space won't last long.
- He then tells her about an urban legend: Imago. The power to find old space.
- And Yasako thinks she has it. She hears the whispering again. This time it's stronger, and it's leading her deeper into the city. She even comes across an old space, to Takeru's amazement. And all the while she's remembering more of her meeting years ago. After leading 4423, she got lost with Densuke. Around the area she's in now, she met an illegal. A man sized illegal that can talk. It says it's lost, and it follows her around.
- The juxtaposition of her walking along with Densuke next to this large illegal is amazing. A mixture of innocence and creepiness. Maaaaaaan.
- As they near the old space, Kyuu-chans arrive and start formatting it. Yasako wants to rush in but Takeru stops her.
- He tells her some urban legends about old space, and the more he talks the more dangerous the world of Dennou Coil seems to become. Deeper and deeper the mystery goes. The glasses become not just a game. "Urban legen says..." kids have died.
- Yasako thanks him and returns home where she finds out she got a call from an old friend, Mayumi.
- And back in First, Takeru is talking to someone about Yasako. He calls her an Imago.
..."Just like that Kanna kid."

Episode 16:
- Fumie tires of waiting for Haraken to finish researching the illegals and wants to get their free research project out of the way somehow. Yasako goes to the hospital to retrieve Mega-baa.
- Oh, and the guy who met with Haraken is named Nekome, and Tamaki knows him, and he's now her superior o_O With him playing such a visible role, I guess I have to change my mind about him being either Isako's brother or 4423. I can't imagine that what Isako is searching for could be taking such a public profile as Nekome now is. It's gotta be... far, far more mysterious than that. So I don't thik Nekome is either.
- Heh, Yasako says behind at the hospital to pick up a prescription Mega-baa forgot about. But she hears that whispering again... Except this time it's just Akira, snooping some more on Isako :sd:
- Yasako startles him and he bumps into his cyber display, revealing dozens of images he tool of Fumie and... and Yasako XD She gets especially interested when she sees he has images of Isako. Images happening right now...
- Isako still visits the hospital even though her uncle has been discharged. And she goes into a certain room each time, and even sets up a code on the doorway. With some blackmail, yasako gets Akira to apply an anti-code patch to Mizzet and enter the room.
- But then Yasako notices something disturbing. The room number Isako has been entering. 4423.
- The pieces start to come together. Mizzet records Isako in room 4423, as she talks to somenoe they cant see - there's an antirecording hack set up in front of the glass divider between Isako and the patient. Mizzet hacks it and begins to record the person behind it.
- There's a scar. The same scar Yonyon-nii-san had. Yasako is... more than a little taken aback. As Mizzet pans up towards his face, Yasako tells Akira to stop. Isako gets up and leaves the room and Mizzet follows.
- They aren't the only ones onserving. The pink Mizzet was in turn watching Akira's Mizzet. It's gotta belong to Nekome...
- But this means that Yonyon-nii-san is the brother Isako is so obsessed with. And given what Yasako remembered of her dreams last time (him being engulfed in a wall of black as she ran away with Densuke), it looks like that might have been the incident that landed him in the hospital.
- And the event of four years ago keeps coming up...
- Nekome talks to Tamaki and she's worried that he's going to cause trouble, as he apparently did four years ago. What kind of trouble we don't know. But they seem to be closing in on Isako.
- Haraken as well is connecting the Amasawa name to some strange events, involving dennou medical treatment. Fumie digs up an old collection of accounts of children who fainted some years ago after using their glasses. The images they drew are disturbingly familiar.
- And Yasako catches up with Isako and tells her she might have met her brother years ago... Isako agrees to tell her something of what happened to him... Nekome knows something about Isako's brother... Things just keep coming together more and more and we're only on ep 16
Isako tells Yasako just what Yasako heard in the urban legend from Takeru. You can tell that Isako held out some hope that Yasako would believe her, and while she didn't expect it, there's still that twinge of disappointement. She tells Yasako never to come near her again.

What this show has is akin to what I like about Kyoto Animation shows. Theres just very little wasted time, almost no wasted emotions, perfect seiyuu delivery, a wonderful sense of imagination, a knack for immersing the viewer in the atmosphere of the show, and an overall tightness and coherence that just smacks you across the face with its competence.

I think it beyond coincidence that a guy calling himself 4423 happens to end up in a hospital room with that number on the door. Hence I think at the time Yasako met him he had already been hospitalized, she met a Dennou version of him (ala Shibumi in Digimon Tamers), and the place they met doesn't exist in reality which is why no-one knows where it is.

Could be, they did mention that he probably met her in Old Space. And he did already have the scar. And the whole problem, Isako said (and Takeru mentioned i another context), was that his dennou body and real body desynched. Maybe they desynched so badly that they're independent of one another. And it sought out someone who could help... someone with the Imago.
Or going further, maybe the dennou body is really the soul itself, and Isako is trying to find a way to fuse it back into his body? ::shrugs::

Revelations aplenty in the early half about Dennou Coil by Tamako as she informs Yasako as they rush off on her bike to bring back Haraken.
Long story short - Yasako goes in to get Haraken with outside help from Isako and Tamako. Haraken gets his closure with Kanna and Kanna asks Yasako to take care of Haraken. Shortly thereafter, Yasako confesses. Meanwhile, there's a fantastic battle to re-format the place while Tamako tries to slow it down as Yasako and Haraken are in the dead space.
A number of surprises in this episode, especially Isako and Tamako working together in their own ways to help out Yasako and Haraken.
While Haraken got his closure with Kanna, it's not over yet though as the episode leaves us with Isako being surprised by someone.

This show may be aimed at kids in Japan but it's good enough to cater for older age groups who appreciate a well-realised concept-rich show with a fairly detailed and intriguing story. However with the current situation in the anime market, this is not a show that I foresee any of the usual suspects picking this up (except maybe on the slightest chance, Bandai Entertainment) and neither would it be a show that would appeal to 4kids to pick up - it's a bit too advanced from the kind of fare that they are keen on.

Damn did the ending credits begin rolling at a bad time. The first half of the episode was pretty cute with the romance that is developing between Yasako and Haraken, but shit, the last half of that episode was just awesome. The way some of the scenes were composed were utterly fantastic, like the shot of Haraken's aunt being flanked by five Satchiis. The music in this episode was pretty badass too. - Another Kanna dream for Haraken... Tamako is getting increasingly worried about him, even wanting to confiscate his glasses and telling him to forget about Kanna.
- I really like how Yasako has grown increasingly comfortable with the cyber world. It happens in small ways, but when you see her navigate virtual files like it's normal, you forget that she knew nothing about all this before coming to Daikoku. She meets Haraken and tells him about the obsolete space she found, which Isako seems interested in as well.
- She also tells him about Isako's brother and the kirabug theory. But then talk drifts to Haraken himself. And it's quite the well done conversation, really. Yasako talking about how she doesn't want him to disappear, about how it's their last summer in elementary school and they should just worry about having fun, Haraken agreeing and promising not to worry about Kanna anymore, and then... Yasako about to confess. Oooh. Though some badly times loud birds kinda muck it. I think he understands her even if she hasn't said it out loud yet. But I also don't believe him for a second that he is going to give up on Kanna. I also don't believe Yasako can give up on Isako.
- And the misgivings are for good reason (well, besides being obvious because the show can't end here :sd: ). He heads to the obsolete space without Yasako, and begs Isako's subordinates to let him talk to her. And this while they're trying to catch an illegal, and Tamako is bringing out the big guns to finally stop Isako, and woo~~
- Damn, this sequence has been just the kind of top tier cyber warfare that makes me love Dennou Coil. Awesome encodes (man, learning under Isako results in FAST development), FIVE SACCHII, Tamako backhacking encodes, Isako trapping another illegal and some strange things beginning to happen...
Oh goddd, cliffhanger~~ Haraken offers Isako the Sacchi command codes, but in exchange... he wants her to take him to the other side with her o_O
I want MOAR!!
...See you in about a month, I guess. Edit: or... tomorrow! Woo! but for now, sleep..

Yeah, I always think there's going to be some tidy resolution at the end of an episode, but something always keeps suddenly comes up and makes me clamor for another episode.
By the way, I know Denno Coil does not have anything to do with horror, but was anyone else just the slightest bit creeped out by the black "things." I've always had a phobia of humanoid-looking things that aren't human. :sweatdrop:

Right back into the action! I should be holding off this a few days as I have no idea when I can expect 19, but I really want to watch now~
Episode 18:
- Oh crap, using Haraken's backdoor, she just fucked up three Sacchi something fierce (one other getting hit on the way in and the last chasing her).
- Haraken wanders off, thinking Isako broke her promise, not realizing that she did nothing of the sort. But he finds the passage before she does, and enters, and there's Kanna...
- Man. The passageway has opened, but it's unstable, and dissolves. Haraken's cyberbody is out of sync but Yasako arrives and is able to apply the metatag he has in his pocket, and reverses the dissonance. Isako knows she missed her chance, but this is valuable information for her, and she can try again... and we're left wondering who it is she's talking to on the phone. Tamako was in touch with Nekome, but who did Isako talk with? It sounds like... well it sounds like Nekomi. If not then it's someone we've never met, but if it is, he's playing both sides like crazy.
- More good Yasako/Haraken discussion. He admits that he's never given up on Kanna, and never will. He asks Yasako to leave him alone, even as he thanks her for quite possibly saving his life when she called out to him as he was in the passage. Poor Yasako.
- And Tamako knows it was Haraken that gave Yasako the access codes... guess he didn't plan for what would happen afterwards.
- Fumie! I remember you, you used to be in this show...
- And then a good scene between Haraken and Tamako. Gah Tamako is hot... anyway, she takes his glasses and says there's no way she'll let him give himself over to someone who is dead. No glasses for Haraken is like being blind.
- Oh, yeah, DEFINITELY Nekome that Isako is talking to. So what does he gain by helping Isako? And what about when Tamako finds out his secret...
- So the passage closed but space is still unstable. It could open anywhere over night...
- ...Fumie brings Yasako home and since she's worried about her, she invites herself over for the night...
- ...they close the door and we see that there's obsolete space around Yasako's house...
- ...and apparently Isako is very worried about this question of the unstable passage because the event of a year ago happened due to the same thing. Nekome tells her it's exceptionally rare that anything would happen but Isako is terrified that she'll be the cause of "something like that" again. What's she plan to do?
- Kyouko hears a voice o_O And after bathing, she has her glasses on and spots obsolete space *in their house*. Isako and her mojos better get there fast.
- Yasako tells Fumie about what happened. She talks about the black keyhole, and reminds us that that's exactly what witnesses illustrated when descrbing the chaotic events of a year ago. Ooooooh. =D I'd forgotten.
- And she remembers this keyhole. It's not the first time... she saw it when she was with Yonyon-niisan.
And now it's in Kyouko's fucking rooooooooom~~~~~~~~ Shes being taken to the other side, and arrrgh cliffhangersgiveme19nowgoddamnit.

Fucking cliff-hangers. This series should be watched continuously, not weekly (or in our case, irregularly). Yet why do I continue to do so?
The race to stop Isako with the Satchii is easily the most tense moment yet in Denno Coil. I can't believe that I had thought it lost a bit of its luster before watching 17 and 18...

A hell lot of it in this episode. It's another superlative episode. However, this coming week's episode is going to be a recap. The good thing is that this will be like the earlier one between episodes 13 and 14 and will not be numbered as as a full episode number.

Mean of them to insert a recap after that.
Only thing about these later episodes I'm wondering about is... where'd Oyaji go? Fumie mentioned in one of the Kyouko-coil episodes that "if only I had Oyaji with me", so what happened? Did I miss something, or has she got him off on some unknown secret mission that'll pop up eventually?

Episode 19:
- Wooo... shivers. Very, very awesome. It manages to be creepy without resorting to cheap startle scares or graphic violence. And the girls win my respect by keeping their cool in a desperate situation. And Mega-baa shows just how skilled she is, she has metatags set up around her room/office and they're so strong the illegals can't break through. Points to Densuke too for leaping to Yasako's defense. The blacked out "NO DATA" Kyouko is a great touch. And oooh, those black humanoid illegals... creepy.
- Isako tries to find the obsolete space she knows must be forming again. She thinks that perhaps Haraken's place is likely... but he seems to be safe and she seems relieved. He sees her and wants to talk. he apologizes for breaking the promise, and she tells him she won't trade with him anymore, and he's better off forgetting Kanna and staying away from his glasses. Then she takes off.
- Back at Yasako's place, Fumie is vehemently denying any possibility of cyberbody dissonance, "the other side", pain from glasses, etc. But Yasako insists. If Imago can project real thoughts into cyber form, can't a reverse exist?
- Fumie has heard enough, she says she's going to take off her glasses. But Yasako stops her. And we see that Yasako is shifting from when she got touhed by an Illegal. Yasako is not taking her own glasses off. She has reason to fear the "urban legends"
- Haraken had spare glasses? I guess he didn't rush to use them because they're not as powerful or someting, but he plans to log into the system again for some reason...
- ...as the illegals finally start to weaken Mega-baa's barrier =D
- Muahaa, Mega-baa calling on an old rotary phone. She tells Yasako that there's a black Coil tag at the front of the store, but before Yasako can find it she's surrounded by Illegals. She backs up against a wall and falls backwards into a hidden passage. (Meanwhile, Mega-baa's pay phone runs out and she's cut off before she can finish what she's saying to Fumie about calling Kyouko's glasses...) It leads back to... the room Fumie is in. Ahahaha, Yasako comes out through the wall and they see each other and scream XD
- They call Kyouko and connect. They convince her to turn around, not to ascend the stairs. Course when all the booth vendors turn into illegals, Kyouko needs no additional motivation :sd:
- And runs and runs and then... DENSUKE TO THE RESCUE! Oh god, Densuke saves her, and then he CARRIES HER ON HIS BACK XD! SHE'S RIDING DENSUKE! XD
- They reconnect Kyouko with her cyber body, but their barriers are being bypassed. The only way out is through the store front. And the only way to do that is FORCE their way through...
Oh god yeah that's a killer, awesome, horrible, wonderful cliffhanger. But I *almost* thought it was going to end just as Yasako and Fumie slip into the hidden passageway, and everything went BLACK. And silent. Oh god if they had cut it off there... XD
If they manage to keep this pace up straight through to the end.... yum~

Episode 20 kicks off with the save. By Satchi! More like Tamako and Mega-ba rushing to the scene.
That was just too fuckin' cool.
I thought there would at least be a break after the illegals assault Yasako's house, but there wasn't. Immediately Denno Coil moves full speed to Haraken. Who wins the episode though? Satchii. Badass Satchii was ridiculously awesome. I liked the meaner eyes. The reformatting battle between Badass Satchii and Floating Detaching Boombox was just fucking insane. That is probably one of the most awesome battle scenes I've ever seen and reminded me a lot of Tie Fighters against X Wings in Star Wars with the lasers and the flanking. By the way, regarding one of multiple twists in the episode, while I always knew Haraken's aunt had some involvement in the past, nonetheless, I was still a bit surprised by the revelation.

What happened to the school and how did they get moved with other students into a much taller building?
What happened to Isako's brother? Did he die or was he moved?

Is 'Sousuke' the person with glasses?

What happened to the school and how did they get moved with other students into a much taller building?
It was an old building, and was torn down. Plans had been in the works for ages; not sure if this new school is temporary or a replacement, but with the shrinking birth rate schools closing or being merged is not unusual.
What happened to Isako's brother? Did he die or was he moved?
According to the voice, he died years ago and the images she saw through the glass were faked.
I forget exactly what was on the board, sorry. But I believe it was blaming Isako for what happened with the illegals.
I believe Sousuke is the man with glasses.

Yet another kickass episode.
As usual though, I have several questions. First, who is the main antagonist and does one actually exist? It isn't the guy with glasses for sure. I haven't been able to figure out whether the pink thing is working for the guy with glasses, or instead is independent. I also can't quite entirely think of the big black boomboxes or the lethal illegals as antagonists. With that said, I don't quite mind if no real antagonist exists. Films/literature have been moving away from the classical antagonist in a while. My current favorite show, Baccano!, doesn't quite have one either, as the cast, rather than being divided up into important individual members, functions more like a united unit. I also have a question about who controls big black boxes. I have no knowledge of Japanese, and have not been able to figure that out through visuals alone.
One unfortunate thing of note include the unfortunate lack of Fumie-chan. There's a certain amount of fun her character brought in the past, and the role she's been relegated too is quite inconsequential. Of course, with the direction the story is moving, it's easy to see why she is less prominent, but I do hope that she was a bit more involved. Daichi's return bodes well though.
Another thing I noticed is that in the last couple of episodes, there's been just the slightest increase in fanservice for Haraken's aunt, with some subtle bounces here and there. I remember BluWacky mentioning before that Haraken's aunt should flash her cleavage to increase viewership, so I had to chuckle during those moments.

Definitely is Sousuke - he's up to all kinds of stuff.
Who controls the pink thing was a bit confusing - there may even be two of them. I lost track there as well. One of them seemed to belong to Takeru, but then it later shows up obviously working for Sousuke.

Gah, I thought that the guy was helping when he was fiddling around with his stuff in this episode when the boom box deactivated for a short time, but it was clear in the previous episode that he was controlling it. Shit, maybe I really should at least take a beginner's Japanese course in college if it fits into my schedule so at least I wont have to make stupid mistakes like that.

He did temporarily deactivate it.
He works for the government, who run the black boxes - the black boxes are trying to eliminate the Michiko bug once and for all, taking drastic measures. They themselves are neither bad nor good; they just happen to be causing problems for everyone at the moment.
Sousuke is up to something, and he realizes that Densuke holds the key to his plans, so he helps them out - but only for his own benefit, and not enough to get caught doing so.

As Andrew Cunningham said, the voice said he had died, and that the Imago made it easier for others to mess with her senses. Whether or not he is dead is still open to question.
What was written on the board that infuriated Isako so much?
Part of it blamed Isako for Kanna's death. She seems to blame herself for that, and does mention not wanting a repeat of what happened a year ago, so it hit the mark.
Is 'Sousuke' the person with glasses?

Honestly, I'm not sure yet. The illegals, at least the non-Null ones, seem more a MacGuffin than an antagonist. It seems like it's shifting to be Megamas recently, which is definitely right in the tradition of cyberpunk. However, I'm not clear if they're the ones behind the Coil domain or just the cover-up. If it wasn't them, it'll likely turn out to be whoever was, but it may have been an accidental thing, which doesn't really leave an antagonist per-se.
I also have a question about who controls big black boxes. I have no knowledge of Japanese, and have not been able to figure that out through visuals alone.
It's either Megamas or the police, or some combination of the two. Since they're able to enter shrines and homes, it's almost certain there's at least some degree of the latter.

From what I can figure, Coil originally created, or was instrumental in creating, the dennou megane technology and Megamas obtained it from from them when they went under or disbanded or whatever. Imago and the C-Domain are legacies of Coil that Megamas has no control over so is trying to eradicate (which is why Imago only works in old cyberspace).

Episode 20:
- Tamako and Mega-baa to the rescue! But not before an Illegal gets a good grasp of Yasako's arm and shifts her dennou body significantly.
- Tamako hears from Nekome that someone Haraken's age is involved again with the incidents. She confirms it must be him, he used Kanna's glasses.
- Then she creates an UBER SACCHI! Sacchi is no longer smiling... And now Tamako going to get told on by an undercover investigator who has been tracking her. But she doesn't care.
...
And no more need to comment in depth really, the episode is like a month old. And I decided to just watch straight through without pauses anyway, because it's so damn good.
This show integrates digital effects (for lack of a better word) better than anything else I'e seen. And it makes SENSE in this show, which helps it mesh even better. The format program vs the kyuu-chans was particularly nice. So was Isako's encode machine gun XD
The scene with Kanna, Yasako and Haraken was, as the title of the episode indicates, one of the important things. Does this bring the Haraken-Kanna story to a close? I also wonder how Haraken will react when he sees Yasako next...
It's also nice to get backstory on the event four years ago: it was Tamako, and Mega-baa is the one who saved her. This is also why Tamako is so adamant about stopping Haraken and Isako. She doesn't want them to repeat her mistakes. And we find out what a "Dennou Coil" is.
Ah, so good. 6 more episodes!

Anyway.. lots of talking. Lots. Get's exiting towards the end though.
The Coils lab is in their new school building of all places. Isako decides to go it along and traps Yasako in a lift taking Densuke with her. The Coils logo is circle with three 'T' shapes around it. The lab produces the key to Densuke's locket and he heals upon unlocking but then starts dissolving and so does the room which starts filling with Nulls. Nekome is getting seriously evil. The keyhole-shaped doorway appears, complete with the steps and torii beyond, but the top of the hole has the Coils logo. Michiko is waiting beyond the door. Isako saves Densuke from the machine but he is still damaged. Yasako arrives, and Isako holds her off with a barrier. Isako runs through the doorway, Densuke is taken down by the Nulls while protecting Yasako and then the Cubes arrive followed by Takamo. By the time Yasako has been Coil tagged back to normal the cubes have finished their work all all that remains is Isako's shadow.
In the next ep preview, as the episode title says, all the kids have taken off their glasses.

Although it looks like this is posted as a response to the original post, situations similar to this are why I hate the flat display mode. We'll never see the likes of the old forum's threaded-flat option (or whatever it was called; I don't remember any more ;_; )...
Is there a way to switch from flat to the other display option on a per topic basis (instead of as the forums as a whole)? Am I overlooking the option somewhere on each topic's page?
