Ah...another "fire/earthquake/we lost it" anime settled nicely. Come on R1 release! /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif

We hope (you and I both—I have bootleg VHS tapes to replace)! However, I still want to know the story behind it—are they using the laserdisc masters, did they find the original masters somewhere else, or what?

This looks interesting. What kind of action should I expect (what other action series does it most closely relate to?)

Mellowlink is a side story to VOTOMS. It's the story of a man whose unit was betrayed by the military when they stumbled upon a jijirium smuggling operation at the end of the war. Only one of the men survives (Mellowlink), and he goes after the chain of command responsible for his comrades' death. It's fairly episodic (each episode is one more person), but pretty damn cool in general.
I have no idea what the best comparison for it would be, though.

Sounds like it's up my alley. I love revenge stories.

Additional information: One tough loner with one big rifle (20mm?) going hand-to-hand against mecha (and no, he's not piloting one himself—he's in fatigues and a cloak, with no armor).
The Manga & Anime HQ story entry (http://www.mahq.net/animation/votoms/mellowlink/ahmtoc.htm) (spoilers on the linked pages!), and the mecha entry (http://www.mahq.net/mecha/votoms/mellowlink/index.htm).

I'd like to mention that I've seen this several times and the action scenes are superb and suspenseful despite their edge. VERY highly recommended.

I just wanted to point out that the official site of the DVD box has been updated. They've added what looks like the art for the box and a better picture of the figure that comes with it and a few character pictures and what looks like a summary of the first episode. And if the pictures that have been posted on the site are indicative of the video quality of the release then it seems that this has been remastered and not just a dumb from the masters used on the LD release.
For anyone who may not have known what the official site is: http://www.vap.co.jp/merowlink/index.html
Can't wait for this show to finally come out!

Okay can anyone explain the title on the banners on the official site calling the show "Leechers Army" Mellowlink? I've never heard the show referred by that name. Where exactly does the "Leechers Army" come from?

I'm no VOTOMS expert, but the name seems to be the official English title, which, in the tradition of mecha anime, displays varying degrees of disregard for the kanji used in the Japanese title (ala Mobile Suit Gundam instead of "Mobile Warrior Gundam" or Aura Battler Dunbine instead of "Holy Warrior Dunbine"). See here (http://www2.hi-nobori.net/battling/votoms/visual/VPLV-70513.htm) and here (http://www2.hi-nobori.net/battling/votoms/audio/PR-834.htm) for other appearances of it.

I don't remember the phrase "Leechers Army" in the show. Was it used? If not, the official name is doubly funny, not to mention English fans constantly refer to the title character as "Mellowlink" and not "Merowlink."

Considering the plot, where members of the command staff ordered an attack using military resources so they could smuggle contraband, is quite appropriate...
They "leeched" from the military, and profited from the deaths of the soldiers in Merowlink's (or however it's spelled acceptably) unit.
