A co-worker and I were discussing GitS and he brought up the "fact" that the Major is lesbian. Now,... I know the scene(s) that this idea came from, but has it been established without question that she does indeed prefer the company of other women to that of men, so to speak?
Also, in the 2nd Gig (I haven't seen it yet so please keep spoilers to an absolute minimum) do they ever touch on the story as to how and when the Major obtained her cybernetic body as a child? I remember in the first season that she said to Batou that when she first got her body as a child that she accidently crushed and broke her favorite doll and cried over it.
This seemed to be a strong and sad memory for her and I was wanting to know more about it.

They do show the past about her getting a cybernetic body. I don't remember the episode # though.

I believe the explanation for the scene in the manga is that she is sort of prostituting herself...making money off of virtual sex where all parties are connected into each other. This is apparently much safer when done by same sex partners...or something. Shirow probably just wanted to draw some hot lesbian sex. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif Besides, IIRC, she has a boyfriend in the manga, too. Of course, SAC is an AU story, but her sexuality is never really established in the show.

I've always been wondering why people thought that she was a lesbian because of the manga thing...
I mean, I didn't really understand the manga... but I was under the impression that that thing was:
Some kinda cyber-drug porn side business that the major ran... and that, the reason why only hot girls were in on it (other than the reason that lesbians are totally awesome) was because it ONLY worked on people of the same sex...
Batou felt weird when he dived in because he was experiencing a sensation in a body part he didn't even had, which is why it only works on people with the same sex
And yeah... she did have a boyfriend.

I dunno... the manga kinda flew by me (I didn't really get it), but still... this was how I understood the thing.
But then, maybe I'm missing something (after all... I didn't understand the manga... especially the sequel)
Hey, I should try reading it again... maybe I'll fare better this time.
EDIT: OH YEAH! There are hints that the Major runs that business in the anime too, actually... yeah... I'm pretty sure there were.

I don't recall the episode number, but in the first season of SAC, I think there is a scene where she is, um, "partying" at the apartment of a female friend, and there were only females at this "party."
Whatever went on, however, is merely implied. There is nothing explicitly explained. This is just my memory, though, so if someone has watched the episode in question more recently, please feel free to correct this.

It isn’t explicitly stated in the series, but the Major is supposed to be bisexual. They talk about it a bit in the cast/staff interviews, I believe. Her boyfriend from the manga actually has a cameo in 2nd GIG.

Motoko does show a preference for women, as evidenced by the presence of her two girlfriends in the series and mention of them making time to go wild together. Other than that it's very understated, and it's hinted at least once that Motoko also sleeps with men. In addition, she seems to have no qualms about using her sex appeal and engaging in virtual sex play to get a job done.
In the manga it's established that Motoko programs high-quality virtual-reality porn for women.

I believe johnmora is right; I remember reading somewhere about Motoko's personal stats, claiming she was a bi-sexual.

She is bisexual, going by both the manga and the anime.

Yeah, that's the thing I was talking about where the Major goes to some damn place to access her external memory (so she could view some videos); I was assuming that er... Mouse, was it? Well, that chick who works at the hospital wanted to get some drugged-up virtual action... but not necessarily some actual action.
But yeah... in the end, her sexuality could very well be up to interpretation (Bi being the safest choice... totally... there's like several scenes in the TV series that point in both directions)... I'm just going with what I saw and vaguely understood in the manga, then, I assumed that the same is applicable in Kamiyama's adaptation (which might not necessarily be the case given that it's HIS re-interpretation)
Man, I must've studied those 4-5 pages like I did chemistry (har har har).

I wonder if this was more of some sort of side effect of someone that is almost 100% cyborg. IIRC, the only part that was originally Motoko at this point is her brain and part of her spine. I believe in the "Man-Machine Interface" manga, this is no longer the case.
But, my point is that I believe someone that can no longer... uh... reproduce, is probably possibly more open to alternate sources of stimulation. And, since she is so "plugged in" she is probably open to a whole lot more than we can even imagine at this point.
I'm uncertain that she is actually interested in physical stimulation with other women. It might all be just virtual.
