View Full Version : Laughing during serious/tense moments
Ever ruin the mood and laugh out loud during teenage angst, shonen beatdowns or other seriously tense moments that make others think you're just plain evil?
I still lmao whenever I see the episode in NGE where Shinji is sent to fight the diamond shaped angel. For some reason, I find the scene where the angel first hits Shinji very amusing. Even when they're showing Shinji <span style='color:#dddddd;background:#dddddd'> screaming his head off in pain</span>, I'm still laughing.
Can anyone else top that?

Yes. Quite recently too.
I was watching Ep. 48 of Eureka Seven. It was the scene where <span style='color:#dddddd;background:#dddddd'>Dominic is hanging onto the wreckage of his ship while falling towards the Skurve Coral and Anemone jumps out of her cockpit to catch him, and the first words out of his mouth were "So, um... how's it going?"</span>
I laughed so hard I thought I was gonna pee myself.
One of the last episodes in Gundam Wing where <span style='color:#dddddd;background:#dddddd'>Treize dided </span>. I ended up laughing my ass off because <span style='color:#dddddd;background:#dddddd'>he died(my favorite character in Wing) but did it as to one up Wu Fei and kind of go "haha" </span>

Well it's not really a tense moment (maybe sometimes), but I do the exact same thing when I see Kirara on screen in InuYasha.

I can't think of any examples at the moment, but I sometimes laugh enough at strange moments during anime that the cats come running to see what's so funny. Or, maybe they are just trying to figure out what is wrong with the idiot making all the noise.

I laugh at violence. Like in Episode 5 of Speed Grapher <span style='color:#dddddd;background:#dddddd'> when a woman bites another woman's finger off on a public street. </span>
I don't know I react that way just because I find some part of it ridiculous, or if it's a safety mechanism for my mind.

I really don't know if I should have taken Gantz seriously at all, but the bulk of my enjoyment from the first season (have not seen the 2nd one yet) came from some of the humor which I wasn't entirely sure whether it was intentional or not. One scene I found particularly funny was when that dude <span style='color:#dddddd;background:#dddddd'>(one of the main characters, but forgot his name) seemingly at random, just went into the bathroom stall of this other guy who was taking a sh*t and then proceeded to get the rest of it beat out of him /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif. Also, when the guy who got beat up, previously said that he wanted to f*** that other guy up the ass, that came as so totally unexpected and out of the blue that I had a good laugh during that scene as well /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif.</span> There are lots of other hilarious scenes in there that also cracked me up but strangely enough, when it seems like the series actually is purposely attempting to be humorous it falls flat.
I also found many parts of Gundam Wing to be funny, but I don't remember if I laughed out loud. Dorothy Catalonia, probably my favorite character in the series, had some very interesting looking eyebrows that I couldn't stop staring at the entire time /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif.

I don't laugh out loud a lot, but I do smile a lot when seeing Guts from Berserk slaughter people. I imagine anyone thats seen me smirk while he sadisticly fires arrows into someones face must think i'm very twisted /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif

I do that to heh. Whenever the main character starts kicking ass, a lot of times I'll smile and think "oh yeh, time for shit to hit the fan". Something like Bebop is a good example.

I usually only laugh when a hero does something violent as though it wasn't that big a deal. I notice this in live movies a lot because most directors just don't portray the violence seriously, so why should I. I wouldn't laugh at a violent scene in rahxephon or Kino's journey, or noir/berserk, etc. because they portray the realistic nature of death and violence. Cowboy Bebop does it seriously for the most part, but sometimes they just need to kill a guy with style.

The end of Kannazuki no Miko's first episode had me laughing.

The first time the Turn A used it's escape/core fighter, and the resulting scene of the Turn A "watching" it fly away caused fits of giggles in both a friend and myself.

In the manga, they actually have a comic strip making fun of her eyebrows. She does various Gundam impressions with them. Creepy, but hillarious. The Wufei "Earth, show me JUSTICE!" comic strip is still my favourite one though.
What's amusing is that while I was watching Gundam Wing, I thought of a way to edit the footage into a Star Wars fanfilm, which means that Quatre is a Jedi and Dorothy is a Sith Lord. And Heero hates politicians. XD
Oh, and any time I'm watching Fruits Basket, I normally scream "rapist!" at Yuki, because he sure sounds like one in the dub. Seriously.
There's other things I've laughed at innapropriately, but I can't think of them right now.
X the movie.
The sceen near the end with the head...
All I could think of was "Alas, poor Yorick!"

This Beautiful and Ugly World
Anytime the girl commented on how beautiful something was.
"XXX is so beautiful!" I'd snicker and add, "...yet ugly."

I remember at the Escaflowne movie premire at Anime Expo a good deal of the crowd laughed when Hitomi said her "We'll always be together" line near the end.
Not really a funny moment and when the director (who was there) asked why they laughed, the general response was that we knew she'd probably be leaving soon after that comment. And she did, of course.
A serious moment, but the crowd knew the likely outcome of comments like that from watching the TV series and other anime.

I find myself laughing a lot while watching Higurashi no naku koro ni . Every time one of the girls goes into psycho mode , it cracks me up because most of the time it comes out of nowhere. Part of it is nervous laughter, tho. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif

Not exactly laughing but I smile during alot of the parts of Gankutsuou specially when <span style='color:#dddddd;background:#dddddd'>the Count starts taking his revenge and his enemies get what they have coming.</span> But that's all I can think of those types of moments always make me smile.

Not anime, but I used to laugh at Ingmar Bergman films. That was a longtime ago.

I remember laughing at Kimi ga Nozomu Eien, the show was so slow and depressing our entire anime club started yelling for the characters to kill themselves, just to end our missery and thiers /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif.

Now I'd call that unusual! I.B.'s films always made me want to rip my own guts out, and stomp all over them. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif
