I saw this anime title in anime blog website and it is about to be broadcast in japanese television. It looks pretty interesting.
Sumomomomomomo japanese website (http://www.tv-sumomo.com/)
Of course, I like the designs but I want to know what the story is about. Anyone heard of it?
Thanks!

When I first read the thread name I thought it was going to be a Chobits spin-off featuring Sumomo /images/graemlins/sweat000.gif

It's a fanservice action manga running out of GanGan (http://www.square-enix.co.jp/magazine/yg/library/sumomo.html). Read a couple of the gangan chapters, but I never followed up by getting any of the collected volumes.

It's an "unwanted girlfriend" show - the lead's the son of a martial arts family promised to a sex-crazed high-school girl who looks like she's about 12 who happens to be the strongest martial artist on the planet. War breaks out between the two families, and the girl, Momoko, has to protect her would-be husband and father of her children from challengers because he's phobic of fighting.
Personally, I think I'd rather drown myself in pitch than watch it, as it sounds quite utterly generic (Maburaho with martial arts instead of magic?). But the manga's very popular (probably the second most popular Gangan series after Fullmetal Alchemist) so it's no doubt got some redeeming features.

That pink-haired chick up front looks really scary. I'm guessing that she's the lead girl.
Which is too bad, because otherwise, the character designs look decent. The plot might be good if it was played more for laughs than anything else, but...
Wow, now normally I'm not bothered by the "really big eyes" thing the way some people are but here it's just too much. It looks like they have snow globes glued over their regular eyes. Just too round and too accentuated..... it's the first I see when I look at those pictures.

It's actually in Young Gangan, which means seinen, and therefore apparently overcomes a lot of genericness by being really freaking out there.
Little sister vanilla ice cream eating contests that wind up looking more like bukkake, that sort of thing.

Oh I see, it is like a cross between "Bobobo-boBo-bobo" and "Eiken".
I mean, I can handle if it is a comedy/semi-action show like Bobobo-boBo-bobo with a little fanservice mixed in too (which I was under the impression this show would be like) but not something completely outrageously stupid like Eiken that goes overblown with too-much fanservice that borders with other "fetishes". /images/graemlins/knowital.gif

So this actually made me laugh a lot.
I'm the last person to watch harem shows, but apparently a lot of retarded Stormriders style kung fu and near constant attempts on the heroine's part to get the guy to bang her are enough to make me actively enjoy it.
The male lead not being a completely worthless personality-free zero also helps a lot.
I laughed a lot as well. I was expecting to find the insane energy and over the top emotions of the characters to be annoying, but that wasn't the case. I really had fun watching this, and thankfully the snow globe eyes weren't as bad as the promo images made them seem like they were going to be. /images/graemlins/happy.gif
Plus, it's nice to have a female lead who isn't tsundere for once lately. I dunno if that's the only reason, but I was expecting to find her relentless gushing love and kindness annoying and it wasn't the case. I'm already rooting for her and it's kind of fun to watch a girl who's unrealistically nice all the time once in a while.

I decided to check out this series because of the funny sounding title name and just finished watching the first episode not too long ago. My expectations were kept pretty low from the start but I ended up finding the episode surprisingly enjoyable. The humor seems mostly low brow but I was surprised to find myself actually laughing out loud a few times /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif. I thought it was pretty funny seeing how the main character guy, Koushi, amusingly talks his way out of fights. And for some reason, he also reminds me slightly of Light from Death Note, probably partly because they're both intelligent. I like the both of them so far /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif.
Right now, I find the girl, Momoko, to be just a little too much though with that extremely clingy and slightly creepy, stalker-ish personality and those large, extra round eyes may also take a bit getting used to. I'll give this series a few more episodes before I decide if it's interesting enough to continue or not but the first episode at least, managed to grab my attention.

I've found myself enjoying this show thus far, so of the over-the-top stuff really appeals to me, for example: the initial fight when Momoko challenges Koushi's father, Unken.
I also like the left-of-center way Unken's mind works, when he quite readily agrees to the match between Momoko and his son and having no problem with them making a baby immediately, if not sooner.
I hope it keeps up the daft antics mixed with the cuteness.

Perhaps I'll do the same because I'm on the fence about the series. The first episode was kind of nice, but it already gives me the "This could get old fast" vibes. Especially in terms of the main female, Momoko. The err chase is probably what will get old fast. In short they need to expand a bit to keep my interest. Granted I may not give it as many episodes as you will, but I guess episode 2 sometime down the road would not hurt. I tend to take things one episode at a time until I either finish or drop a series.

Perhaps but I don't know yet how long the series is going to run for. If it's 13 episodes I don't think the series will end up to be too terrible /images/graemlins/sweat000.gif. I don't think I really prefer harem in general, not being particularly interested in the concept and just having not seen a lot in general but I thought at least the first episode for this show was pretty entertaining at least. I was thinking about the main female lead of the show and I don't really know what I feel about her yet. She sorta reminds me of a perverted version of Misha from Pita-Ten with her extremely energetic personality which seems like it could lead to annoyance and irritation sooner or later for this character though.

I think so too. If they tone down her insanity by say.... 50% or so by the time the show hits episode 6 or 7 then things can start getting more serious and the show will stay enjoyable. If what we've seen so far is going to be carried through the entire show then I don't know if it'll stay entertaining that long either.

FWIW, the Kenichi manga rules (well, if you like shounen martial arts stories). /images/graemlins/happy.gif Unfortunately, the anime seems from the first couple of episodes to have slightly cheap production values, though I like the voices for most of the characters, especially Shigure's.
Getting back on topic, Sumo^6 IMO isn't as good as Kenichi, though read it and find it quite funny (especially when Momoko takes on the school gym teacher). The loli designs for a couple of the characters I find a bit disturbing, but the cow girl is better. I also think I saw an image of her costume for the anime, and it's a bit toned down from the manga version.

Well one thing that would also help is adding other layers to the series. They already did that in episode 2 with the whole thing about assassins coming to kill them. Plus I think there are still characters left to be introduced. So that may help as well. Yeah I finished the second episode and it remains decent. So I'll probably watch the third as well. One episode at a time.

Some cute & funny moments in this ep, but it did feel like they'd stretched the plot a bit thin -- it can pretty much be summed up by saying that the two masked assassins from episode 2's ending turn up at the zoo and use the animals to attack Koushi and Momoko. That said, I still found it a bit of fun.

It's an unusual style (the author has a little trouble drawing women, though I think he's gotten better recently) but not as unusual as a lot of other shounen manga out there. I mainly like it though because the storyline's quite fun.

Haha... wow. I really didn't want to like this anime at first. When I started watching episode one, it just seemed so damn dumb. And then Sumomo went on her "LET ME DO ANYTHING FOR YOUUUUUUU" kick, and I was further convinced that this was something I should skip.
But... it grew on me. Damnit, it did. Momoko is... too... damn... cute! I relent! I WILL NOT DISOBEY! BATHE ME IN YOUR ADORABLENESS, MOMOKO-SAMA!
Oh, and the chibis in the ED are awesome >_< Sigh, I admit defeat, this show is going on my "keep up with" pile. Especially after the whole scene in episode two about vaulting onto the roof, I just can't say no.
Oh and... HIRANO AYA! Goddamnit her voice is so seductive when she wants it to be. So... definitely a guilty pleasure show, and despite wanting to resist the premise, by the end of episode two I'm hooked =P
I've seen up to episode 5 now, and can confirm the guilty pleasure status of the show. This show reminds me of Kage Kara Mamoru, except it's much more enjoyable to watch. I can see the way Momoko gets treated becoming old, but as the only harem show of it's kind airing right now it's fun to watch.

I've only seen up to episode 4 myself. Actually I just finished 3 and 4 a few minutes ago. I'll admit the new activity in the thread kind of reminded me. In any case I can say my fears mentioned earlier have been lessened a little. Over all this series is kind of fun to watch on the side. It also helps that Momoko despite her strangeness is cute. Plus I approve of Iroha in more ways than one. Which I guess is where the guilt part comes in. *Runs*

I've watched up to episode 6 so far and have still found the show to be fairly consistently funny. It kind of borders on being offensive at times and there were scenes when I felt like I shouldn't be laughing, but couldn't help myself /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif. Episode 5 was probably the funniest episode yet but I'm sure some people will or have already re-watched a particular scene several times for a different reason /images/graemlins/wink.gif. Iroha was quite amusing with the way she acted in that episode but thought she just got a tad annoying in the following. That cheerleader routine that she did seemed really random /images/graemlins/stunned0.gif. I like her default personality better. Anyway, this was still a pretty funny episode but I think 26 episodes is too long and will likely run out of steam by then. I'm liking this show a lot right now and would also call it a guilty pleasure since the show is one of the dumbest I've ever seen but still manages to be very entertaining. It's also helping me to forget about some other stuff and lift my spirits a bit.

This episode was a bit more serious than the previous ones but it wasn't all that bad. Because of that, I thought it was more noticeable in this episode that the character design for Momoko is just really bad. Her eyes are way too huge as it's been mentioned several times by others and I just can't seem to take her seriously no matter how hard I try. I just kind of see her as a "joke" character because of her design and every time I see her, I expect to be smiling or laughing because of something stupid that she's doing or about to do. Anyway, I hope the show gets back on track with the comedy in the later episodes. It kind of fails at attempting to be serious.
For some reason, I'm finding myself kind of liking Koushi-dono and while it was predictable in this episode that he was going to get his ass kicked by those punks, I hope to see him start to fight competently in later episodes. Also, I hope to see more of Iroha later on. She is my favorite character so far but I hope she does a bit more than just gush over the male lead. I find it to be highly amusing when I see her pretending to be moe. :neko:

Ah yes her, she was one of the highlights of the series. At least based on what I watched of it. Too bad even she wasn't enough motivation to get me to finish the series. Granted this may be because Sumomo herself got tiring after awhile and in a sense probably killed the series for me.

So it actually does get serious at the end? I quit watching halfway with the intention of finishing someday, but there's never time.
Well...pacing wise. This is what happens. The 1st 3 episodes or so are ehh? (as in "Should I really be watching something like this?") Then suddenly the jokes start to hit their stride around ep 4 ("I will rock you" :> ) and becomes incredibly good around episode 7 when Koushi starts to have a change of heart and shows tremendous character growth. The really hilarious gags continue (the scene of Momoko and Iroha humping each other is particularly memorable. :> ). Up to ep 10, this show is really classic.
Then from ep 11, the show starts to slide a little. Sure, the gags are there but some of them are more embarassing than funny. Eps 12, 14, 16 are especially meh. There are some strong episodes in between such as the episode focusing on Saigo though. Then suddenly from ep 19 to the end, the story becomes extremely focused and dramatic with continuous development and plot. At this point, the VAs seemed to have settled nicely into their role and the voice-acting for the leads in these episodes is just amazing. I can see why Momoko's VA won an award. And while most of the early episodes didn't do much to convince me why the leads should be together, it is these episodes that convince me otherwise. Personally, I think the show would be better if they had cut some of the middle episodes and kept the series shorter and tighter.
The 1st OP and ED are incredibly catchy. Too bad the 2nd ones aren't as catchy.
Anyhow, the ending certainly leaves room for a 2nd season. Has anyone here read the manga? After the anime ending, what happens in the manga?

Actually I did remember her. Well in the sense of remembering there was a cute girl with blond twintails named Iroha anyway. Although obviously having dropped the show and not watched it in awhile the higher level details are harder to remember.
My use of "her" was more likely out of pure laziness and really I was just commenting on her being one of the better parts of the series. Besides until Nosredna actually confirmed which girl it was for all I know it could have been anyone. Even one not introduced until after I stopped watching.

This was my favorite show of the fall and winter of 2006. Unfortunately, that says more about the shows it was competing with than about it. I got through 16, but there's so many good shows coming out this year that I doubt I'll get back to it. Sumomo was OK and pretty funny at times, but it just seemed to be missing a spark.

I really liked approximately the first 1/4 of the show but found the rest to be mostly mediocre and filler crap. Iroha was probably the reason the show was decent enough for me to follow through with it when it started going downhill. I quite liked her and wished she was the focus of the show rather than the two main leads whom I didn't care for much at all by the end. The male lead appeared to have some potential in the beginning but ultimately was a disappointment due to his lack in development. Like I said before, most of the show was quite lacking as it went on but the last few episodes were a bit better but not in the way I most enjoyed the series for in the beginning, the comedy. Overall, I found the show to be pretty decent but disappointed that it didn't maintain the quality that it had in the beginning. If you liked this show, I would very highly recommend Seto no Hanayome, which is absolutely superior in every way. Just about every character in this show is awesome and the two main leads don't suck in the least. The comedy is more consistent and even when it takes itself seriously (somewhat) it still manages to entertain. This show easily takes the top spot for my favorite comedy of the year and I've seen quite a few. I'm actually a little shocked that it seems you haven't tried this show out yet.

The first OAV is about them going to a hot spring and having a bunch of misunderstandings (I just watched it), haven't gotten a chance to watch the second one yet. From the previews, the next episode looks like Koushi is kidnapped and they have to go rescue him, not 100% sure about that though.
