According to a report at Anime News Service (http://www.animenewsservice.com), a new Kino no Tabi anime feature film is in the works. Not many details, but here's hoping the original anime staff is involved. Here's also hoping we might actually see an R1 release of the thing, unlike "Episode 0" and the first short movie.

Unless my memory fails me completely, Nani ka wo suru tame ni is the story from volume seven that the first movie animated.
Either they've confused the old story with the new, are reporting the original news article like it is new, or I am entirely wrong about which story the first movie animated. (Haven't actually seen it...)

According to ANN (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=4381), this is the plot of the first movie:
[ QUOTE ]
A prequel to the Kino no Tabi series, Kino is being trained by her teacher. She learns how to ride Hermes and becomes gifted with excellent marksmanship. However, her guilt revolving the real Kino is with her when she decides to set off on a journey. Shizou even directs her to Kino's real mother. All the while, Kino is becoming confused with her real identity.

Probably you can identify which original Kino story that's based on.
I actually only recently discovered Anime News Service, so I'm not sure how accurate they usually are, but they seem pretty knowledgeable to me. Certainly the report specifically references the previous movie, and seems to clearly identify this as a new project. But who knows?

That's the story from volume seven, certainly.
I swear that was the story they used as the first movie.
Since they don't provide any source at all, it's kind of hard to tell where that might have come from.
I would have thought the big story in volume 8, Fune no Kuni, would be a more logical choice for a new movie...since it isn't a prequel.

Right. The plot description I quoted is for the first movie. /images/graemlins/sweat000.gif
So from the sound of it, something's screwy with ANS's report. Maybe they just got the title of the original story wrong, or maybe the whole thing's a crock. As you mention, a source for their info would be helpful.
In any event, I edited the thread title to add a question mark.

There is a post (and a picture) about it on today's Moonphase too :

Anybody here willing to translate what it says, please ?

Confirms there will be a second movie, and hopes it will get a wider release than the first film, which only played in one theater ever.
Presumably that reference to the first film is what caused the confusion.

Thanks a lot /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif
A second Kino movie. Absolutely lovely. Hopefuly it will be a little longer than the previous one, even if I don't know how the feel of a Kino story would translate to a one-hour long movie.

Hopefully this will give ADV or another company incentive to license the first movie and Episode 0 to release along with the second movie. Being able to buy just one more Kino disc to complete the set would make me very happy.

That's why I speculated that it would be the Fune no Kuni story, which is possibly the longest one in any of the books, and (very vague spoilers)
brings Shizu and Kino back together again while introducing a new major character.

Reportedly, the official Japanese Kino no Tabi website (http://www.kinonotabi.com/) has further confirmation and possibly additional info. I say "reportedly" because I can't actually read any of it. The site does have a rather /images/graemlins/noseblef.gif picture of Kino on the front page, though.

Nothing about the new movie, then? Eh, AnimeNation's news page said there was. Oh well.
I do see where Anime News Service has revised its original report to state, "The specific story to be told in the new work is currently unknown."
