Does anyone know of any Pirate-themed anime other than One Piece?

Anything a bit more historical or fantasy as opposed to Sci-Fi? The only other one that comes to my mind right now is Ellcia...

Since space pirates are out, I'm coming up blank.

Animal Treasure Island. It's like Dog Three Musketeers only with a wider variety of animals, and Treasure Island.

I think there are pirates in Ashita no Nadja, but I forget.

I know I've seen more. I mean, Pirates are what made Harlock the most parodied costume ever. If I think of more, I'll post.

Edit: Confirmed Nadja. Also, Nadia. (But Nadia is by Verne, making it Sci-Fi.)

Treasure Island:

Though I'm not sure how helpful this is, since I saw it on TV years ago and have no clue whether it got released anywhere besides Japan.

Animal Treasure Island? Does that have a different name in Japanese, or a site where I can find some more info?

monika
09-11-2006, 10:23 PM
It actually has a US DVD (http://www.amazon.com/Animal-Treasure-Island/dp/B000BLI5Q4/sr=8-1/qid=1158031328/ref=pd_bbs_1/104-8319133-5259906?ie=UTF8&s=dvd) release. I was shocked too. I probably saw it in some European language or something as a kid.

This list is Randy's. He's watching Colbert, which is why I assume he's not posting and instead just feeding me answers over AIM. That's also why it's in stream of consiousness instead of a proper format for posting.

[(non-animal)Treasure Island] Directed by Dezaki.
Dezaki also directed Cobra. Which is about a pirate. But in space.
There are pirates in Kenshin.
And in Those Who Hunt Elves, which is fantasy.
There are space pirates in Abenobashi. Which, despite having space pirates, is not a sci-fi show.
FLCL has space pirates. But I'm not sure where that show falls.
(Did Lupin ever fight pirates? You'd figure he would have.)
Oh! Porco Rosso. Air pirates. Non-sci-fi.

Randycat

So many space pirates...:o! Anyone have a site for the Dezaki Treasure Island? That's the only one on that list I'm not familiar with..

monika

It's the one Bobma posted.

Ah thanks! I somehow managed to completely miss that post (oops...) Anyone have more info or sites? From the 1 pic I saw it looks just like what I'd be looking for /images/graemlins/happy.gif

Aren't there Air Pirates in castle in the Sky? But that is more of a fantasy setting I guess... I'm sure Slayers! has had some pirates, but again, fantasy setting.

Actually, outside of sci-fi, pirates are pretty thin on the ground. Which I find odd, you'ld think there would be a few more out there, they are so fun to use.

Lumberjack

Aren't space pirates the best kind of pirates? Kind of like space ninjas?

Randycat
09-11-2006, 10:53 PM
Yeah I'd figure they'd be more popular because of the popularity of One Piece and Pirates of the Caribbean (although, I'm not sure how popular POTC is in Japan?)

monika

I would not be surprised if there weren't air pirates in every single Miyazaki film and I'd just forgotten. The guy likes his flying (and pirates too). Porco Rosso is like someone told him "Hey. i want you to make a movie that has in it every single thing you love, except for the heavy handed environmentalism." When I first saw it, I was shocked that any one movie could be so completely Miyazaki. The sheer concentration of Miyazaki in that film is terrifying.

That reminds me. There are pirates in Future Boy Conan, which is sci-fi but the pirates are regular water pirates.

I've seen Japanese cosplay of it, if you take that as any indication.

I'd like to see him have a bout of insult fencing with a Guybrush Threepwood cosplayer. Potential hilarity. /images/graemlins/happy.gif

Kiki doesn't have pirates, although it is heavy in the flying department.

I haven't seen it myself, but I believe Blood Royale (http://www.rightstuf.com/1-800-338-6827/catalogmgr/yM44e0nPwJEQaAQFeh/browse/item/62725/4/0/0) has pirates, though the emphasis of the show is on sex rather than piracy. /images/graemlins/shy00000.gif

Not exactly pirates, but the rogue crewmate of the Sylvanna from Last Exile is pretty close.

Oh yes there be a pirate and a naughty octopus. Mainly about a pirate captain trying to fix his ship by sex slave training of two princesses. Not bad except for one scat scene. But still enjoyed it.

Mermaid Forest, Samurai Champloo, and Otogi Zoshi also have pirates in some episodes. Which is to be expected from historical-fiction road-trip shows.

Legend of Basara has a little bit of pirate action in it. At one point, the main character has to duel the captain, who happens to be a woman, in order to win over the crew.

Black Lagoon deals with modern pirates/mercenaries who smuggle goods in and around the seas of Southeast Asia.

If you have any interest in Vikings, who sailed the seas to plunder and trade, there's an anime called Chiisana Viking Vicke (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=1246).

There's also a pirate-themed Doraemon movie (http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=PCBE-51422).

Yep, I will vote for Black Lagoon too. It might not be the traditional Caribbean variety, but that doesn't make them any less entertaining to watch.

Actually, the Japanese Captain Jack I saw was the most accurate cosplay of any character I'd ever seen (well, except a Snape I saw at a HP doujinshi-only event). The hair was perfect, the costume was great and the mannerisms were dead-on. Wish I'd taken a picture of it but was too shy to try at the time.

I don't think Whisper of the Heart (screen play and produced), My Neighbor Totoro, Castle of Cagliostro, Spirited Away, or Kiki's Delivery Service have pirates.

Miyazaki has said that Porco Rosso was done for himself.

None of Miyazaki's films have "heavy handed" environmentalism. If you want to see that, try Arjuna. /images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I didn't actually mean that every Miyazaki film has pirates in it. I can think of plenty that don't on my own. Now flying, that I actually did mean.

Flying or at least really extreme jumping.

It's at the very least decently popular. When I was there, my host student was a Johnny Depp fangirl.

Hmm, in regards to the original post, I'm sure Pokemon has some pirates, or at the very least parts where Jessie and James dress up as pirates. They've got everything else and more than enough episodes dealing with water.
