I don't rightly know where best to post this, but I thought some people might like to know.

Inumaru dead after suicide leap (http://www.crisscross.com/jp/news/383874)

Rin Inumaru was the creator of OjaruMaru, which was later turned into a highly successful childrens anime, directed by Akitaro Daichi.

Ojarumaru is unheard of in Japan but very popular in Japan. There are a ton of videos available (since the series started in 1998) and McDonald's just had an Ojarumaru toys run with their happy meals.

It wouldn't last on air for 8 years, have two shelves' worth of videos at the rental store, and McDonald's toys if it weren't. I wouldn't say it's anywhere near as popular as Detective Conan, but even my Japanese coworkers who don't know a thing about anime know what Ojarumaru is.
