So My TV is Samsung 4041D and dvd players are Oppo 971H and Saumsung HT-TQ72. What happened was:
I tried playing Azumanga daioh r1 dvd and I noticed massive flickering from the opening. I tried everything with my samsung player (Which can upconvert upto 1080i) but none helped. I changed my TV settings but none helped.
Now, I Heard good things about Oppo 971h so I just got it delivered. Unfortunately, I still see the god damn flickering, with/without truelife, CCS stuff.
Any suggestion? its really killing me since I feel like I just wasted $230 for an extra dvd player(oppo).

Did you try to set the Oppo to 720p? It looks like the TV would work best with 720. The set can work with 1080i, but you'll probably get better results with 720 because that is what resolution the set is closest to.

For 720p, it had faster flickering while 1080i had slower flickering. Im guessing becuase its 1080"i", but anyways, both had flickering. Both are annoying as hell and very noticable. Also, most of the time, at least for my samsung player, 1080i looked slightly better on the TV set.
*and yes, I worked with 480p too. It was the worst case. ^^;;

Can you describe the flicker in more detail? Does it affect the entire image, or just text? Is it aliasing/jaggies along lines? Is it limited to a certain part of the image? Does it affect only the OP, or the entire episode itself? I'd test it myself, but I don't have azumanga unfortunately.
Oh, and are you using HDMI or component?

1)the azumanga diaoh logo: the edge of the logo flickers while its zooming. I see some lines keep appearing and disappearing at the bottom edge of the logo while zooming.
2)when two characters are slowly moving upwards/downwards, the outline flickers like crazy.
3)for most of the pan/scanning and zooming scenes outlines are flickering.
4) for some scenes, where characters are moving slowly, outlines are flickering.
I think thats about it, and yes, I'm using HDMI. For samsung player, HDMI/HDMI, and for Oppo, dvi/HDMI.

The Azumanga Daioh opening (and I think the ending too) was animated at 30fps, could perhaps that be where the problem lies?

Hmm,the thing is, it looks fine on the computer, even when I zoom it x9. So I think its either the LCD TV or the dvd player set-up. Also, wouldn't the DVD player be able to handle 30fps?

Not with the default setup. Try changing the deinterlacing to video 2. It is possible that it's due to the way azudai is encoded - do any other discs have flicker issues for you?

Not that I remember. Azumanga was the only one I can remember since it was just SO BAD. Anyways, I'm actually away from my house right now, so I'll have to try video2 when I get back. I'll post if it works or not when I try it out.

okay, I got to change it to video2, but flickering still visible. damn...

muhootsaver, my friend on campus has the 4041D, i'm gonna head out there tomorrow with my Oppo and test it out. i will bring my entire Azumanga Daioh boxset and test all the disks, paying special attention to the logo
i feel so guilty telling you the Oppo 371H was fantastic! hopefully it is just a small problem with the Sammy that can be fixed. testing the Azumanga disks on my Oppo right now, OP's and ED's look clear. replaying it over and over again, see no flickering at all, logo remains clear and unwavering

Hey Zanza. You shouldn't feel guilty at all! I tried out 1080i and changed my TV setting's sharpness to 0 which made the flickering a LOT less visible. It IS still there...but things look a lot clearer now. So I guess the problems lie on the TV mostly rather than the player itself. I'm too tired right now and my sis is watching the TV so I'll try out some DCDi stuff tom to see if it'll change anything.

neways, I just finished trying out all the possibilities. To put it simply, flickering didn't disappear even when I applied filters such as Truelife, CCS or so on. (of course it is there without any filters). Video2 or 1 didn't change a lot. I also tried different upconverting: 720p and 1080i but they both had flickering. Since Zanza's TV is fine, I'm guessing maybe this is the TV issue rather than a DVD player. So I guess I'll just wait and see how Zanza's friend's TV works out.

muhootsaver, just got back from my friend's place. i am baffled.
on his 4041D, when i play my Azumanga disks on my Oppo, i notice a disturbing amount of flickering in the OP. i am baffled, i just played the exact same disks with this same Oppo a few hrs ago at home, no flickering. i tried fiddling around with the image menu on the 4041D but, couldn't completely reduce the flickering
looks like the Oppo is good, maybe a PQ problem with the 4041D model /images/graemlins/depresse.gif

Yeah, I think 4041d can't handle some images very well. By tweaking the "Movie" section, I managed to come very close to no-flickering but it is still there. So I guess I'll have to live with that /images/graemlins/cry00000.gif Having said that, I actually recognized the difference between Oppo and Samsung dvd player. Oppo had cleaner lines and had no color bleeding which I am happy about.
neways, thnx a lot for actually trying that out! I appreciate it.

The Oppo should handle that material fine still. My first thought would've been that he was running TrueLife and CCS. The combination would produce flicker or ringing, especially the CCS but since he says he's tried both of them off already I'm stumped.

[/ QUOTE ]You need the oppo in Video 2 mode for it to detect 2:2 (ie, 30fps) though.
[edit]Ah, that's already been mentioned hasn't it.
