View Full Version : R3 (Odex) Monster is out

The first R3 set of Monster is out. There's English subs, and it covers eps 1-12. It's on Popular for around US$25.
Now the real question is does anybody have this yet? The first few episodes are heavy on medical terminology, and it would be nice to know that the translation is good and that the video quality is alright.

I have it, but I haven't had a chance to watch it. I've had it for about a week now.
DAMN...
How much is shipping at that place... I mean, from experience, how much would this cost me?
Wait... yeah, just tell me how much this costs (plus shipping) in US dollars...

Shipping to the US is almost as much as the set itself...which is why I'm waiting to find out how many of my other local friends want copies and then ordering a bunch and splitting the shipping.
Of course, it would help if someone *nudgenudge* could do a spotcheck on it and let us know if the quality is decent (or at least how many discs it is).
So, more or less, this'll cost me like 50$?
... that's not bad... but... uhhh...
maybe I should really just wait for the US release? (I'll end up buying it anyway)
...
This'll just be a last resort (in the event no one ever picks it up, which isn't likely given that even Hajime no Ippo made it over... yes, my money is still on Geneon no matter how I go about it)...
But yeah... I'm pretty torn over it... I hate waiting.
(but then, I'm still broke from the geneon sale... dammit)

How does ordering from outside the country work anyway?
Is it just like ordering from... uhh... DDD or DVDpacific?
Or is there something else that I need to do?
Ooo... been waiting for this. I'm planning on going to Singapore sometime in December 2006. *Makes note to pick up Monster R3 DVDs*

I ordered Boys Be from popular several years ago. I don't recall having to do anything special.
So, my card, like, automatically just gets charged the Singapore dollar equivalent?
That'd be incredibly convenient if that was the case...

Your credit card company will convert the price for you.

They all do, even if you don't see it. Usually it's in the form of a worse exchange rate, with the difference varying from company to company. Some have an additional one time conversion fee that you do see as a customer, but that doesn't necessarily mean that it costs you more than others.

Dang it, I just noticed this thread after posting about this in the old ODEX thread. Oh well.
Here's the link (http://www.popular.com.sg/jsp/product/product_detail.jsp?vca001=552&vpd001=61240) for the lazy people. /images/graemlins/happy.gif

I took some time to screen cap a good portion of episode 1. 75 images to be exact. While the video quality isn't that great, it's good enough for me. I'm sure people with HD TVs will probably claw their eyes out.
Caps can be found here (http://images.desturel.com/index.php?path=monster/) until I remember to delete them from my site. Around 30 megs total since I saved them as png instead of jpg. I took the large number of captures for those that wanted to see the technical jargon.
There were some odd translation choices, but nothing that stood out as "bad". Of course I wasn't pay too much attention since I was half asleep (because of work. not because of monster. /images/graemlins/sweat000.gif ) One thing that stood out was the line "Give me back... (http://images.desturel.com/monster/cap027.png)" which when included with the entire sentence of "Give me back my husband (http://images.desturel.com/monster/cap026.png)" is fine, but by itself (http://images.desturel.com/monster/cap069.png) I kept thinking "GIVE ME BACK MY BRAAAAAAAAIIIIINNNNNSSSS!!!!". (remember, half asleep)
"Give him back" probably would have worked better for me especially with how many times they flash back to "Give me back" in the first episode.

Thanks for the screenshots! Picture quality looks pretty much great to me. Nice, clear subtitle font too, Funimation could learn from these guys.
Only crappy thing about this is Popular's shipping rates. The final price for a 74 ep series isn't too bad, though if I decide to get it I'm going to have to wait until all of it is out. If someone has the license for R1 they better announce it soon or they might lose some sales here. /images/graemlins/happy.gif

Looks pretty good. Thanks a bunch for posting these. Methinks I'll be getting a couple of other friends into Monster together and grabbing 3-4 sets in order to reduce the shipping fees.

Is there still no other place to order them than from popular?
They don't carry all the sets Odex have released and that is a big negative for me as well as the very hight shipping rates.
I ordered Vandread from Odex a few years ago but not from Popular. It was another online store that carried the Odex DVDs. Don't remember the name of the site now. Links to it have been lost in computer crashes.
Anyone?
Thanks.

I don't think so. YesAsia have been reluctant to stock material from Odex in the past for some reason, as are JSDVDMall.
Regardless, I just put in an order for 5 sets. Came to $34/person including shipping.

I found out my card does a 3% currency conversion fee when I imported three Haruhi CDs. >_> Yours might too.

Yes, 3% does seem to be rather typical. Visa and Mastercard (don't know about Discover and American Express)have a 1% fee, and the issueing banks often tack on their own li'l surcharge.
Now, I ordered my Odex DVDs with my Capital One card, which is the only one that I have that doesn't charge a currency conversion fee. There may be others, and quick li'l Google'll probably give you more information than I could.

For people who live outside the US, I think it's better to use Visa rather than Mastercard.
My understanding is that Visa will convert directly between the original currency and your home currency. ie when I order something in Japan from where I live in Australia, Visa will convert from yen to Australian dollars (and there's a commission payable).
But I've heard that Mastercard will convert to and from US dollars. So if I order something from Japan, Mastercard will first convert from yen to US dollars (commission payable) and then convert from US dollars to Australian dollars (another commission payable).

I have a friend who runs a gaming business in Singapore. He knows one of the owners of Odex and says he shouldn't have a problem getting Odex DVDs.
I'm trying to get a few more details, but if people are interested, let me know.
