By Main Stream I mean most people recognize it and have watched/seen/grew up with it.

Anime that's stuck out beyond it's orignial run.

I'd say Doremon, Shin Chan and Hokuto No ken (I wish ADV would give that the same treatment they gave Gatcha man Kenshiro and friends deserve it)

Anything directed by Miyazaki/Studio Ghibli.

Also, Sazae-san.

The most obvious answer has to be Hello Kitty.

I'd start with the second list from the "Top 100 Anime" lists that TV Asahi published recently. (ANN Article here. (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/article.php?id=9652)) The celebrity one. That should give you a good feel for what's popular and well known, both from a long-term stand point as well as a snapshot of what's currently well regarded outside of Japanese anime fandom.

I wouldn't say Hello Kitty counts. It was created as character merchandise, the various animations resulting from that are simply another form of merchandise. So while Hello Kitty well known, it's not well known/popular as anime per se.
