Youtube is one of the greatest things to ever happen to anime fandom. This is why I think so:
1. It allows shows that would've never made it to DVD become popular and then get licensed. US anime distributors then can cash in on the hype.
2. It allows fans accesss to shows that are unlicensable for whatever reason (say most Toei shows).
3. It allows people access to shows uncut, instead of having to sit through bullshit like 4Kids bastardizations.
4. Most importantly I think is it has created a new generation of young anime fans who read subtitles and want un-edited versiosn of thier shows. So the possibility of another 4Kids rearing its head is lesssened, and they can move on to more advanced anime rather quickly.
5. More competition lowers prices for consumers, and also forces companies to improve quality to compete.

Replace "youtube" with "fansubs" (and what is this other than "fansubs/raws/rips on youtube"?) and you have basically the same argument that's been going on forever. There are pros and cons on both sides, but really, what more reason is there to beat that dead horse?

The difference is that youtube has made fansubs a whole lot more accessible to a lot more people. I gurantee you comparing the fansub audiience to pre youtube wouldn't even be comparable. I've seen the change wave over anime fandom pretty clearly just in the past year. Bittorrent of course as well, but that was more a precursor to youtube's influence.

That's not relevant though. The argument is still the same argument that's gone on forever. If anything, the people who loathe fansubs would just consider this something that makes it even worse.

Really? How?
Bandwidth is bandwidth. It's the same no matter where you go.

You don't have to download anything with Youtube. I know plenty of people that either can't download or just don't like torrents.

I think his point was that you don't have to do anything other than click and then sit there. There's no finding codecs, torrent sites and clients, bot lists, irc chans, fservs, ddl sites, etc etc. Granted that's all extremely easy once you get the hang of it, but for a lot of people it's a daunting concept. Youtube cuts that all out.
And if someone has dialup they're probably not doing much fansub watching anyway =P The R1 DVDs would be out before they finished downloading XD

You know, if someone can't rub together the five or so braincells it takes to figure out Bit Torrent and find a torrent site, then they don't DESERVE to watch stuff.
And Youtube videos are shitty quality. Yes, I know why, and I LOVE it for things like AMVs, trailers, promos, stuff like that.
But entire episodes? Ugh.

Yeah. None of this is surprising at all. They've been doing it with Jpop videos for a long time already. The only thing surprising about this, is the number of videos removed all at one time.

I'd think this would be the easiest way to do it. Just put in the keywords the C&D provides you with and purge all the files that have those words in the description. Though I admit I have no idea how purging files on that scale actually works. YT doesn't care what the file actually is, though, we've seen this already when we lost all the Natsuke/Shizuru music videos and some promotional peices along with the fansubs. They just went through and wiped out everything My Otome that they could easily find. I'm just guessing they did the same thing again this time, even though it seems to only last for a day or two before more goes back up.

Well, there is a difference between you actively searching for things and things becoming as accessible as you can get from youtube. At least when you actively search for thing you need a few skills, like being able to find codex, being able to install programs for playback. Youtube makes things too easy.

I will admit to having used it for that purpose. However it's something used sparingly and I honestly don't use it for anime. I'll leave it at that. Still in general due to quality issue, Youtube is definitely far better for clips and such.

Replace 'ftp' with 'YouTube' and '1998' with 'never' /images/graemlins/happy.gif YouTube and similar sites are great for clips but as far as pirated full-episode content goes, it was a solution looking for a problem. The other methods of getting pirated content (which I won't mention here) are much better.
I'm not saying fansubs ought to have excellent quality - actually, I don't believe they should, just not eye-bleedingly bad. I mean, the quality isn't a great deal better than .rm, and it's more inconvenient if you have a slow connection because you can't download stuff in advance. (And actually... it was probably back in about 1998 or so that .rm was in use for anime...)

No, using bit torrent does not give you extra nerd points over people who use youtube. Each has thier advantages, it has nothing to do with inteligence. Also capitolizing words for emphasis is ANNOYING and STUPID

Yes it does.
And I'd use italics, but I'm lazy.

I could use Bittorent. But given a choice between searching for a torent and then waiting 45 minutes to download it, or just going to Youtube and playing it right away it's an easy choice even with the quality difference.
