Since there's a few people who have complained in the past about all the RPG discussion, I wanted to see what genres people here like to play. This poll is completely independent of what platform you play it on (console, PC, handheld) so vote for the ones you play most.

Also, I tried to include every genre but there's so many subgenres and games that fall under many genres that it is hard.

I ended up clicking everything other than Sports, Shooters and Online, though I was kind of err'ing on Strategy games (at least until I remembered all those N-1 and that Super Robot Wars game I played this year).

Even then I do make exceptions, so I'll probably get Gears of War and Lost Planet. I guess that leaves me with Sports and Online...

Sure. You're playing volleyball afterall.

I haven't voted in my own poll yet, but I'm not voting for sports because I only have 1 sports game, which would be Harry Potter Quidditch Cup. I pretty much play or have played every genre, but I'm only going to vote for the ones I regularly play.

Everything except strategy and online.
And I ticked other as you forgot shmups /images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Let's see here. RPGs, platformers, action-adventure, sports (how else will the (-49)ers win the Super Bowl this decade?), racing, puzzles, simulation, and other — because I'm not sure that Clubhouse Games or Big Brain Academy and their ilk really count as simulation in that way. FPSs can kiss the very ass that got whooped by <span style='color:#dddddd;background:#dddddd'>Adramellack</span> this morning. /images/graemlins/devil.gif

Everything but racing (with the exclusion of Mario Kart and Mario Kart only-I think), Strategy and Survival Horror.

While I mostly play RPGs. I'm also known to play Puzzle games, fighting games, action adventure, and of course platformer. Often used as break between RPGs or for a change of pace. The other genres I'm not into that much. In any case speaking of break from RPGs. Perhaps it's time to visit 2Flash Games (http://www.2flashgames.com/newgames.htm) and play around with some of the puzzle games there for about a half hour or so.

I went for everything except sports and online. But the main choices I play are RPG (duh!), Platformer, Action/Adventure, and Fighting. Every other choice is on occasion. As for "other", I'm going to state Strategy RPG (Fire Emblem /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif) if that counts. /images/graemlins/tongue.gif

While I don't play anymore, I was generally into everything except sports, music, survival horror and online.

While all of those except sports have existed for a long time, the last three were much smaller back when I played. Music hardly existed as a genre at the time, and online games in the sense of MMOs were not nearly as widespread.

And this was only, like... around 2000 that I started to stop /images/graemlins/sweat000.gif

RPGs and strategy were always my favorites, I suppose. I don't have the patience/time for them now though.

I voted for RPG's and strategy games, which account for the vast majority of my gameplaying time. I do play and have like other genres, though, particularly platforming and fighting games, and several others.

RPGs and Fighting games for me.
I still enjoy the magnificent stories RPGs tell every time, and I use fighting games as a quick fix, spontaneous stress relief.

I checked everything except online and sports. (if online is primarily referring to MMORPG, as I have never stuck with one for more than a month.)

I don't think you need an "Other" for Strategy RPGs or Action RPGs since they are akin to a sub genre. Ie they are both still forms of RPGs in the end. I've played both types myself. As well as the the well more traditional RPGs.

RPGs, visual novels, action-adventure(mostly just Zelda, though), and music games for me. My game collction is over 90% RPGs. I'll occasionally play specific games from other genres, but am not interested in them on the whole.

Not much love for survival horror, is there? I suppose it's not that much of a genre, with relatively few good-quality game releases in recent years. That was one of my picks, anyhow; I'm definitely a Resident Evil fan, but I hope there can be more new entries in the genre too.

A bit disappointing that plain 'adventure' wasn't included; with the recent handful of adventure titles for DS (Phoenix Wright 1 &amp; 2, Touch Detective, Another Code) the genre seems to be undergoing a bit of a revival, and there are still new PC games in the genre too. Upcoming on DS is Hotel Dusk and I believe the same developer is also working on a Wii game; both Nintendo's systems are well-suited to traditional point-and-click adventures and both also provide ways to add extra touches. (Another Code, while ridiculously short, had several excellent puzzles that relied entirely on DS features.)

Plus I think the continuing wave of well-written modern text adventures are awesome and well worth anyone's time (being free is a plus). I probably actually spend more time playing those than paid-for games. (Which reminds me... wonder if I've missed the voting deadline for IFComp 06 yet, I could stand to get a few more games rated if not...)

Everything except for Simulation, Sports, and Strategy. /images/graemlins/sweat000.gif There are some simulations I like playing, but for the most part, I can't really play them. /images/graemlins/relief1.gif

Wel, I wanted to click "shooter", but someone snuck Halo in there as an example, instead of, say, Gradius, R-Type, Ikaruga or anything else produced by Treasure. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif

I'll play anything as long as it's good. But RPGs are my clear favourite.

While I'll play any game as long as it's fun, my favorite games are typically adventure games and strategy games.

Even though I played many video games representing many genres, my favorites have been RPGs, platformers (esp. the Mario games), and stategy games (esp. real-time, as opposed to turned-based). For some reason, I have never been interested in the other genres on the list.

I play a little bit of everything...
Except for sports and music games...
But that's just because I only have 1 Madden game and Rumble Roses for sports...
And I have no game in the music genre...
Although I'd like to check out Guitar Hero...

I picked RPG, Platformer, Action Adventure, and Survival Horror. Although to tell you the truth I haven't really been playing anything at all. I think the last game I actually beat was RE4 for GameCube. FFXII is calling my name from the next room but I want to wait until I can devote a good chunk of time to it.

11-11-2006, 12:45 PM
My choices in order:

Rythm games (In the Groove and Pump It Up mainly, but I should have my Pop'n controller soon)
RPG
Action/Adventure
Survival Horror (mainly RE and SH)

I rarely play the other genre's, except when something HUGE gets released, like the New Super Mario Bros or Half Life 2. Other then that, I stick with the above genre's. I used to be big into fighting games, but they honestly hurt my hands to much after extended periods of play. It's best for my health to just stay away from them.

Based on the examples, I went with RPG, Platformer, Fighting, Action Adventure and Sports. Although I'm sure I could go with a few of the other categories as well.

RPG, fighting (SNK), sports (NBA) and Other, as I didn't want to pick 'shooter' to indicate that I like 'retro style' vertical shmups.

Pretty much 75% of my games are RPGs, with the remaining going mostly to platformers and action-adventure ..though I do pick up fighting games and racers from time to time..and the very occasional puzzle game.

I tend to be drawn towards Puzzle/Strategy type games only because they keep me interested and stimulated. My DS collection alone is evidence of that.

Jecca, where's the poll??? Did it have a limited timeframe or something? I don't see it anywhere.

I play a lot of genres, but strategy and turn based war games are a long time favorite. Though Lords of the Realm with it mix of realtime and turnbased was very near perfect. I wanted more games like that...

I like a lot of adventure and RPG games too.

This was one of the polls lost when Chris moved us over to the new forums. I don't know if I can edit my first post and add in a poll, but even if I did all the entries people already did are lost. Stupid forum transition.
