View Full Version : New shows for a new year
With the new anime season approaching(is it Winter already?), I've noticed some sites going up for shows that are airing in January. Some look really good, others.. well lets give them a shot. So here are some shows as of today that have been announced.
Master of Epic (http://moepic.com/anime/) - The designs look nice, and it seems like a RPGish type of show. The first thing I thought of was Tales of Eternia. I haven't played the games, but it's based off one.
Manabi Straight (http://www.ufotable.com/manabi/) - Well, this is another UFOtable production. From the looks of it, the characters are made to appeal to the "moe" audience. This really doesn't look like something that I would be into, but I'm sure it will find its mark.
Majin? (http://www.majin.tv/) - I can't read kanji, so I'm going by the url. It does look interesting and the character designs are something new. Although I don't know if they coordinate their hair in the morning heh.
Sisters of Wellber (http://www.avexmovie.jp/lineup/wellber/) - This is a Avex and Production I.G joint project, so this will probably be the hit of the season. The designs look great, and so does the animation (http://www.dengekionline.com/data/news/2006/11/10/ee7ff150f6df1156d4c0f2c1c9a0a940.html). This looks surprisingly mature as the slides have a naked main character holding a bloody dagger with a naked guy on the floor. Again, it should be interesting.
Hidamari Sketch (http://www.tbs.co.jp/anime/hidamari/) - Another cute type show. The designs really remind me of Kamichu though.
You also have your new shows like Giant Robo, Rozen Maiden(again), Tokyo Tribes 2, Romeo and Juliet(thread on it already) and so on. But I wanted to highlight some of the brand new shows coming out in the upcoming Winter Season. We can't forget the second season of Emma, but it didn't have a new site heh.

It's a MMORPG only available in Japan, hence whyyou haven't played it.

Tokyo Majin Gakuen - Kenpucho.
Based on some ADV games, I know bugger all about it.

Except it's not airing until April, so it won't be a hit until next season when it'll have much more competition :p The good stuff doesn't normally come along until April or October.
Other shows for January include:
Major Season 3 (http://www3.nhk.or.jp/anime/major/) - does this keep going until the main character's geriatric or something? Baseball anime.
Les Miserables Shoujo Cossette (http://www.nippon-animation.co.jp/lesmise/) - World Masterpiece Theatre returns, although I question the wisdom of using the most annoying character in the story to tell it with...
Deltora Quest (http://www.deltoraquest.jp/) - I gather that these are very popular kid's fantasy books in Australia or something, but I'd never heard of them and the art doesn't exactly look high-budget.
Getsumen Usa-Heiki Mina (http://www.mi-na.jp/) - the character from the Densha Otoko opening gets her own series.
Venus Versus Virus (http://www.tbs.co.jp/anime/vvv/) - more big-breasted lesbian sci-fi.
SHUFFLE! MEMORIES (http://www.shuffle-tv.com/[/url) - memories I can't block out of the first series, unfortunately, but looks like it's back for more.
Himawari! Season 2 (http://www.starchild.co.jp/special/himawari2/) - why? The first season was average enough as it is, although the promo art looks a bit more interesting this time round.
- the next Noitamina show from much of the team behind Honey and Clover. Can't wait for this one.
[url="http://www.gamecity.ne.jp/neoromance/tv/ange/"]Koi-suru Tenshi Angelique ~Kagayaki no Asahi~ (http://www.nodame-anime.com/Nodame Cantabile[/url) - again, why a second season of this? Maybe they'll have a budget this time round.
Tengan Teppo Gurenn Lagann (http://www.gurren-lagann.net/) - Gainax mecha show. Good staff, but I don't care for Gainax much so I guess it's wait and see on that front.
I think you mentioned most other stuff that's coming soon (although a fair whack of that isn't confirmed for any date at all yet, like Romeo X Juliet).

Master of Epic (http://moepic.com/anime/) - I'll check this one out on character designs alone. Looks very nice.
Manabi Straight (http://www.ufotable.com/manabi/) - Wow, I remember seeing art for this like... over a year ago. I always wondered what it was and really wanted to see it animated. Well, now it will be. yaaaay~
Majin? (http://www.majin.tv/) - Hmm, site doesn't tell me enough (can't read Japanese), so I'll wait and see. Art looks nice though.
Sisters of Wellber (http://www.avexmovie.jp/lineup/wellber/) - Boobies! Er, I mean, looks interesting even though I don't have a damn clue what it's about. Definitely going to check it out though.
Hidamari Sketch (http://www.tbs.co.jp/anime/hidamari/) - Nothing on the site seems to be active yet, but I'm sure I'll check it out.

something
11-11-2006, 11:29 AM
Deltora Quest (http://www.deltoraquest.jp/) - Looks UBER generic... might or might not try it. Depends how swamped I get.
Getsumen Usa-Heiki Mina (http://www.mi-na.jp/) - Haven't seen Densha Otoko, but I take it I don't have to have seen it for this to be watchable. I'll probably check it out just out of curiosity.
Venus Versus Virus (http://www.tbs.co.jp/anime/vvv/) - Nothing on the site, but you can be damn sure I'll check this out. The art looks great.
SHUFFLE! MEMORIES (http://www.shuffle-tv.com/[/url) - I loved the first season, but I'm so divided on this. Do I really want to watch what is largely the same show again? And more importantly, if I do in fact watch most/all of it and obligate myself to buy it, do I really want to buy both versions if both get licensed? Probably... not. I'll take a wait and see approach on this. But I don't think I can resist more Asa and Primula and Sia and Nerine and Kaede....
Himawari! Season 2 (http://www.starchild.co.jp/special/himawari2/) - Due to unfortunate slowness on the part of some, I haven't been able to see more than five episodes of the first season. I really want to see more though, beause I very much adored Himawari herself as a character. So, I look forward to this but naturally need to finish season 1 first.
Nodame Cantabile (http://www.nodame-anime.com/) - ...I'm so terribly confused... What?
Koi-suru Tenshi Angelique ~Kagayaki no Asahi~ (http://www.gamecity.ne.jp/neoromance/tv/ange/) - Never even heard of the first season, so... pass I guess
Tengan Teppo Gurenn Lagann (http://www.gurren-lagann.net/) - Ah, I'd seen art for this for awhile but I'll likely pass. I mean, I suppose I'll give it a chance but I doubt it's my sort of show. You never know with Gainax though >_>

If you are looking for big breasts, you will be sorely disappointed:

example c (http://images.desturel.com/misc/vvv03.jpg)
example d (http://images.desturel.com/misc/vvv04.jpg)
Plus it's not sci-fi. It's supernatural action. I guess you can consider it partially sci-fi, but people expecting sci-fi will be disappointed. Also about the lesbian part... well that is also false. Although there isn't a whole lot of romance in the first three volumes, there are times like (minor manga spoiler from vol. 3) this one (http://images.desturel.com/misc/vvv05.jpg) which certainly displays that they aren't heading the lesbian route at all.

Heh, I dunno what's going on with that commercial, either, but to clear it up for ya, Nodame Cantabile is a quirky story following the lives of students in a music academy. It's a lot of fun (well, the manga is, anyway). There is no space action, and um, definitely no faeries... /images/graemlins/sweat000.gif

Okay since GONZO already prooved that they can *really* badly screw up the wonderful designs by okama *cough* Glass no Kantai *cough*, the fact that Mina will now be featured in a TV anime series rather than the originally announced OVA bothers me "a bit".
As for Himawari! season 2 I agree with you.
Nice okama chara designs, but I'd much more like to see the IMO wonderful CLOTH-ROAD getting the (high budget! because the awesome designs/ideas of okama for this series *require* high budget animations and a talented staff adapting this into anime!) anime treatment.
Speaking of the new year anime season in Japan and okama, there's yet another title with him involved in the character design department (well he and Kiira (http://hamlet.jp/)) that is scheduled for January (according to Moonphase's list at least). Saint October (http://www.konami.jp/visual/saintoctober/).

Lord knows, they haven't actually released a lot more information than is on that website thus far. I'd guess its probably in a school where the characters are learning to be mecha pilots rather than pop idols (I suspect the mecha will be refered to as iDOLs, actually). Its just an excuse to transpose the characters into another setting, really (there is a lot of HiME staff on there, after all).

They been tweaking the ages of the characters somewhat, towards the 15 point (Yayoi was only 13 in the game, whilst Makoto was 16). I don't really like the fact that they've toned Iori's forehead down somewhat, though.

There's a Japanese artist (initialg) who has done a lot of art of characters from this 'idolmaster' thing so I always wondered what it was. I'll be checking it out based on that alone, whenever it comes out.
I filed all those away to remember them and that's all the thought I'm giving it for now. There are too many good shows to watch right now to worry about the ones that are coming up next year. A couple were on my radar already though, like Manabi Straight. I can't wait to see what UFOtable does with it. Plus we have Lucky Star coming from Kyoto Animation once Kanon is up and that's guaranteed to be fun.
Ah, thanks Blu(again). I'm already interested in a couple shows this year, but I hadn't seen someone of the ones that you posted. Venus looks nice, but what is with the eye patch fetish? I'm seeing it everywhere now.

Although there isn't a whole lot of romance in the first three volumes, there are times like (minor manga spoiler from vol. 3) this one (http://images.desturel.com/misc/vvv05.jpg) which certainly displays that they aren't heading the lesbian route at all.

Yeah it's lame... I rather they animate John Peel's series, I forgot the name though(with Score, Pixel??, and Helaine??). Except now that I'm older, it reads really badly...

You know, I could've swore that Idolm@ster was a popular game in Japan with dance sequences and what not. The image on that website throws me off completely. *Glances over in Gatt's direction*

THE iDOLMASTER (http://www.idolmaster.jp/) is a networked idol management arcade game, and indeed it looks a lot like this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jpGULNrV3ik) (well, thats the upcoming 360 game, but the song is catchy).
So, yeah, they've changed the concept somewhat for the anime version.

Admit it, the only reason you linked to that video was because of that song /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif I think anyone who sees that vid becomes obsessed with the game.

Well, here's (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kf144Wof4mk) another video of it.
--EDIT--
I found something interesting:
Here's DOL MASTER MAD(HappyMaterial mix) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JztkrXaXIro) that sounds like either the Negima opening (not sure), but here is a video of it in reverse: [GAME] happy material reverse play THE iDOLMASTER (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CArimqokqOM)
Totally off topic here, but here is the Negima opening played in reverse with English subtitles (the same song as the previous link). See here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I2Rj_Ai8FxM)
It also looks like Claymore (http://mj.shueisha.co.jp/claymore/anime/index.html) is getting animated soon. Cool - I'll certainly be checking it out when it airs.

Tengan Teppo Gurenn Lagann (http://www.gurren-lagann.net/)
The director of Dead Leaves and the writer behind Ashurajou no Hitomi (The Eyes of Ashura Castle)? Sounds different.
So the Dead Leaves guy is doing the new Gainax show? Man is that going to be interesting.

Hmm. That might be interesting. I was kind of dissatisfied with the ending of KnM. While this is not a direct continuation, perhaps some further story will remove that dissatisfaction.
Avex (http://avexmovie.jp/lineup/momotsuki/) has a site up for a new show or movie. I have the sneaking suspicion that this is probably some type of Ero or PC game.

That's the new Carnelian series called Touka Gettan which is supposedly based on Kao no Nai Tsuki II (if anyone does remember, Kao no Nai Tsuki was released here in the U.S. by Kitty Media with another name called Moonlight Lady).
Though the peeps who did the Yamibo series will be working on this so it's not going to be a hentai. So I don't know if there's going to be hypnotic lesbians involved like in the first one!
12-11-06 (9:50PM EST)——Winter Anime TV Season Dialed In
Excluding one shot specials and movies, 27 new anime series are set to debut on Japanese television between January and March 2007. This period is unofficially known as the winter anime TV season. Oddly enough, the figure is lower than this year’s winter or summer manifests. A big push seems to be gearing up for the springtime however, with a possible 70+ (or more) new series in the works.

It is not that rare, the spring and fall season always have more series debuting that any of the other two seasons. the winter and summer seasons only have to replace the series that only last 12-14 episodes. That is why the spring has twice as many new shows as the winter and summer season.
Yeah, I know that the Spring and Summer seasons are the "big series" months if you will. But as a anime fan it kind of makes me be quiet and take a step back and realize that we'll probably see around 70 series this spring. Man is that a lot to choose from.
