View Full Version : Buying a system in November: When to strike?

Okay, I'd like to buy a DS (leaning towards a pink Lite now, but any DS is fine) from Best Buy sometime this month. I was able to save up quite a few Best Buy coupon's from McDonalds' recent Monopoly promotion. Since the coupons meniton no limit on video games (just DVDs and CDs), I figured they would best be used towards a DS of some sort. I've got enough coupons to shave about 30-40% off of the current going price. Planning on picking up Brain Age and Big Brain Academy as my first two games for it (all the Mario games will probably come out on the Player's Choice line eventually, and I'll be looking for good deals on other games).

However, with Black Friday and other possible holiday specials comming up, I'm wondering if there's a way to bring the price down even farther? Is it likely that Best Buy will have a non-Black Friday special that will include the DS Lite system? I've never ventured out on Black Friday before, but I hear it's complete and absolute hell. Is it known yet as to whether or not Best Buy will have a discount on DS Lites? What have their game system discounts looked like in the past on the day after Thanksgiving sales? Would a good strategy be to have Dad go ahead and get in the checkout line while I go get the system (politely letting individuals cut ahead of him if necessary while he waits on me)? Should I get the games then, or get the games a few days ahead of time? Can one order it on the site and just do in-store pickup? Do you pay at the store or on the site when you do so? I'd actually have a few fewer coupons that way; one or two has the serial numbers damaged, but the barcodes are intact.

Or will it even be worth it at all and should I just be happy with the discount I'm already getting through the coupons? The coupons expire December 2nd, I believe, so I can't wait until any December sales if I'm to use it at all.

Best Buy's sales for Black Friday have already been published (see the Black Friday thread in OT), but unfortunately no discount on the DS has been listed. I recommend using any coupons you have and getting a discount that way, or heading to CostCo and get a bundle.

Oh woops, I didn't see the Black Friday thread there the first time around. Sorry. ^-^ Hmm, looked at Costco's website, but those bundles don't impress me price-wise. :/

I say it would be safe to buy now. Rarely are there deals on consoles, except when it comes to getting some bundles around the holidays. Since you are in the market for a Pink DS Lite, it should be safe to buy since it has been on the market for a while now, no real deals announced on Black Friday, and most of the demand for consoles will be centered towards the PS3 or the Wii.

You may as well buy now. No need to wait for Black Friday. Actually, if your coupons expire December 2nd or whenever you said it was, it's better you buy before Black Friday because after then the stores may run out of or low on things for a bit.

Don't count on anyone having a special on the DS systems, truthfully, as last I knew, wholesale on those was $123.50, which leaves a rather thin margin for the stores to do much with the price. I'd say to get one now.

Yeah, I'm thinking of seeing if I can get Dad to swing by Best Buy on the way home from Mom's doctor appointment this afternoon to pick one up. Just have to see where I put those darn coupons. /images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Is the chassi really shiny or is it the smooth sanded glass look.

Huh?

I can't find my coupons right now, so I haven't gotten it yet.

Since I've never seen a Wii in person, nor am I going to pick one up any time soon unfortunately (waiting for a better bundle and more free time to actually use it), I have no idea what the chassis of a Wii looks like.
