View Full Version : Was getting a PSP a good idea?

I've had my PSP since December 2005 and so far I've been happy with it. But all I hear now is how the DS is kicking ass sales wise while the PSP is not doing so great, in fact I just have this feeling that...well there's this convention I'm going to this week and I just bet I'm going to see a lot of people with a DS and probably only one or two people...or just me with a PSP.
I need to know if getting a PSP was a good idea to begin with

Yes, of course it was a good idea getting a PSP. As I've said before, Sony bashing is the very "in" thing on the Internet at the minute so you'll hear all sorts of people bad mouth usually without much justification for doing so.
Yes, the DS is outselling it but that in no way means it's a sub-par machine.
The outdated "there's no good games on it/they're all ports" arguement is pretty redundant as if you look (and don't be afraid to import Japanese stuff - remember it's region free) you will easily find 10 to 20 must have games depending on your tastes.
Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops is out (in the US) in a couple of weeks and that's obviously going to be a must own title.

If you play it, then it was a good buy.
I have to admit, though, my PSP has been something of a heavy paperweight for a while. I've got quite a few games for the thing, but I haven't been getting a huge amount of use out of it. The DS is just more fun :nervous:

I am looking forward to MGS: PO, I'll get that as soon as it comes out in the UK.
You're right, maybe I'm taking all this Sony bashing too seriously, I've bought 5 PSP games this month anyway, so it's not like I'm not buying games for it now
As for importing...well Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth does interest me, but I'd rather wait incase it does get released in the UK and has features added on it that are not on the US release

Highly unlikely. Its not like this is an FF game which is still undergoing work for its usual International Release in Japan. Its already been through the mill for PSOne release for both Japan and US, and now again for PSP. If they haven't added anything already, they aren't going to add anything at all.

Oh right....and you mean to say that unless it was an Final Fantasy game a UK release would not happen?

No, I mean they wouldn't add anything new to the game if it was released in the UK.
Honestly, though, I don't think it's going to get a UK release anyway. Square-Enix seem to be cutting down on the non-FF releases in Europe these days, probably after a few less-than-great titles didn't sell all that well. The fact that they didn't bother releasing Grandia III in the UK doesn't bode well for them releasing any other of their less RPG properties over here.

the PSP is cool, i don't even regard the DS and the PSP on the same level. to me, they are two very different handhelds, you can't compare them. that's why i bought both, PSP for the awesome graphics and media storage and the DS Lite for the games/gameplay
granted, i haven't played my PSP in a long time but, there are still some fun games on my shelf ie. Loco Roco, Tekken DR, Bomberman etc

You buy a console for the games. If you are happy with the game offerings on the PSP, then yes it was a good buy for you.
Personally, I think the hardware is fantastic. It is a great gaming device that delivers good graphics for a machine of it's size. However, on my personal view, UMD movies have bombed and the thing is no iPod, so the multimedia aspects of the machine have not lived up to the hype I have hoped. Also, the gaming library is sparse in offering titles I would like to play on it. So for me, it was not worth buying at launch. However, since I own it there are a few titles worth picking up on it at the moment. But, like most other people, I see a better gaming library offered on the DS and if I had to choose between the two, I would go with the DS.

Someone other than me and Johnny talking PSP. Johnny it's a miracle! :P. As for me I love the PSP and it's a great portable console. You can't judge the DS and PSP as rivals seeming as the PSP has way better power in terms of graphics and options to use for the PSP. I will say though the DS does look like it has a great library and very innovative titles that you can use with that stylus thing. But the PSP is now at a good age where they are many great titles coming in the future or already out. You got MGS: Portable Ops, Killzone, GTA:VCS, Medal of Honor:Heroes, Loco Roco, Metal Slug Anthology, FF:Crisis Core, Cacpom Puzzle World(can't wait to play Pocket Fighter :)), and don't forget the ability almost to play PS1 games on the PSP. :) This is a good time for a PSP owner. At least IMO
… don't forget the ability almost to play PS1 games on the PSP. :)
See, that's what's likely to finally sell me on the PSP, assuming Kaz pulls his head out of his HEY HEY! (/krusty) and lets people download them straight to PSP without a PS3 middleman. They have the technology.
And then I'll pick up Megaman Powered Up, Ghosts n' Goblins, and SFA3. Maybe Lenneth as well, but that one's up in the air.

They've already said it'll be possible in the future to download and play without the need for a PS3 (direct downloads from the official PSP site I'd imagine) but unfortunately have given no timeframe.

Don't lose hope in VP:L and VP2 getting released over here...

Hmmm, have you heard something in regards to this?
I mean, personally I don't really care since I have the US versions of both already, but the way you stated that makes me curious...

I really like my PSP.
It has flaws for sure, but I've had a great time with some of the games on it, and it's been a great way for me to play some classics I missed out on back in the day like Lenneth and Tales of Eternia. Hell, I even enjoyed the critically mauled Popolocrois :)
I don't really play my DS so much anymore, as the games scene(At least here in Europe) has been pretty quiet since New Super Mario brothers came out, so I've been glad of the PSP to keep me in handheld gaming, as I travel a lot these days. Plus, the PSP is a lot easier to play on public transport if nothing else :)
I just hope the games scene doesn't suffer another horrible patch like the one between GTA Liberty City and Daxter's release again. That was a pretty dire time for the thing.

When it comes to any system all that matters is one thing. Are there games on the system you enjoy playing? If the answer is yes then the system was worth getting. It's just a matter of what games you try in most cases. After all before owning a system you have to guess what is good, but once you do own it you can see for yourself what you will truly like or dislike.
I can't say if the PSP or DS is better, but in the long run it doesn't really matter for this reason. Even if X is better than Y, it's still possible to love Y. Something doesn't have to be the best or favorite to be good. Plus if you can afford it there is nothing saying you can't own both systems.
Assuming one can't afford both a DS and PSP. Then well honestly you can think "If only I had gotten the other system", but in reality if you had gotten the other system you may still be thinking the same thing anyway. Especially if you can find a few games that look interesting to you based on pictures, videos, articles, etc.

I've been getting a lot more out of my PSP that my DS. I don't care about "killer apps". I care about RPGs, and the PSP blows the DS out of the water when it comes to RPGs. The DS has only two traditional RPGs, one of which is pretty crummy(Lunar: Dragon Song).

It's little late to worry about that now, isn't it?
I have a PSP and I'll admit I don't use it very much (only just recently finish "Daxter"). I should be using it more since my current commute includes a 1+ hour train ride each way.

I love my PSP. I bought it in July and I recently beat Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror and trying to get all golds in Wipeout is addicting. I also bring my PSP to school everyday to listen to music between classes (Yukari Tamura owns me). Can't wait for some newer games to drop in price either...I'm lovin' it.

The PSP is a great thing to have, but I still feel like it's a port machine more than anything. Still, these ports almost always end up being better than the source material and there are some really good original games on the system. And there's some really good original games on the system... there just needs to be more of them.
That said, it's definitely worth having a PSP because even though there's not a ton of great original games, there's still more than enough to make it worthwhile to own the system.

I got my PSP last year and I'm pretty happy with it. There's some good games for it. I also have some movie files saved on it to watch while traveling.

bwahaha, she was prob just bored, bus rides are boring
plus, she was all about Light-kun, i don't even think she knew i was there everytime he was on screen. damn bishie sociopathic weirdo's

Er.. actually, the DS has a quite a few RPGs at this point.. :nervous: Stuff like Children of Mana, Contact, Magical Starsign, Mario & Luigi, and Final Fantasy III :neko: Plus, technically, all the GBA RPGs.
(I don't mean this as a dig against the PSP, btw - my stance is, if the hardware has games you enjoy, then it was a worthy purchase. :) I might pick one up someday for Crisis Core, but that day's a long ways off.)

I picked up a PSP when Ultimate Ghosts 'n Goblins came out, which was a must-play for me (I was a big fan of the series back in the day). Since then, I've mostly picked up the retro game collections. It's kind of cool to be able to take 40+ old-school Capcom arcade games with you. If they ever release a Castlevania collection similar to the Gradius one, I'll be ecstatic.
