Does she ever make an appearance in the novels?
From what I recall of the anime... she is older than Lina and works as a waitress... also has some funky title and scares the heck out of Lina.

Nope. Luna Inverse does not make an appearance in the novels. The novels do drop some hints about her. She is the Knight of Ceiphied and is probably the only swordsman more powerful than Gourry in that universe. In Slayers Special #21, there is a short story that deals with Gourry's past right before he meets Lina and there is a bit of additional information in there:
In the story, Gourry meets a man that convinces him not to throw away the Sword of Light. The man reveals that he has one daughter who's a traveling sorceress and taught him some basic defensive spells such as Elmekia Lance. His other daughter can bisect a plasma dragon with a kitchen knife. By the time the story ends, even though the man is never given a name, the reader realizes that this man is Lina's father, so the daughter that can bisect a plasma dragon with a kitchen knife is Luna.
In the manga, it is revealed that Luna is the one who encouraged Lina to go out and see the world. This is mentioned in Super-Explosive Demon Story, Slayers Special and Slayers: Knight of Aqualord (not released in English). It's also revealed that Lina shot pictures of Luna taking a bath when they were younger and sold them to earn money for the family when times were rough.
Interesting stuff. But makes me wonder.. What was Lina mom like?? Now there is a scary thought..

All that's known about her is that she was a sorceress and in an interview, Kanzaka says that she is normally a smiling person and now manages a general store with Lina's father, who was a swordsman. It looks like Lina's following in her footsteps regarding a fondness for swordsmen. :neko:
Personally? I'd probably fear getting all three Inverse women in the same room. I don't think there's enough food on the planet for that one.

Isn't she also supposed to be a powerful sorceress , more powerful than Lina ? IIRC it's mentioned in Slayers Try, but as it's been a very long time since I last watch the serie so I am not sure.

Like Sylphiel, she specializes in White Magic, she's not a generalist like Lina.
But she's more of a Mage Knight anyway, and, as has been mention, scares the shit out of Lina.

Sylphiel may specialize in white magic... but she can sure throw a mean Dragon Slave at ya.

I think this is all confirmed.
Luna is a Knight of Cepheid, meaning she ws born with one of the pieces of the Dragon King Cepheid within her - like a Shabrandigo fragment, but dedicated to good and niceness. Thanks to that, she's probably the most powerful human being alive in the Slayers world. She also has no greater ambition than to be a part-time waitress in the Inverse family's home city, and from what I recall she's had to make that very clear to a number of religions.

It doesn't say anything like that in TRY. In TRY, the only thing we hear about Lina's sister is that she's powerful and Lina has a healthy amount of fear toward her. Lina tells Gourry back during the first season that anything is better than her sister armed with a bokken. The reason why Lina specialized in magic is because her sister can't do magic. She wanted to surpass her sister in something and magic was the only way she could do that.
If anything, Lina specializes in black magic. She can perform the most powerful black magic spells there are, including the ones that tap into the Lord of Nightmares. Lina can't cast the uber-powerful shamanist spells (Ra Tilt) nor do we see her do much white magic beyond a basic Recovery. That's why there's such a good balance among the main four of the Slayers group:
Lina - Specializes in black magic.
Zelgadiss - Specializes in shamanist magic but because of his chimera nature won't be able to perform anything more powerful than a Ra Tilt (interview with Hajime Kanzaka)
Amelia - Specializes in white magic with a secondary specialization in shamanist magic (can both cast Resurrection, as seen in the Knight of Aqualord manga and Ra Tilt)
Gourry - Appears to be magically null, but actually has a magical capacity one step short of being able to cast a Dragon Slave (also from an interview with Hajime Kanzaka.) Is the most skilled swordsman in the group and the magical capacity helps in his ability to utilize his swordsmanship.
I do waaaay too much research for my writing. :neko:

Argh. This whole conversation is frustrating me, knowing that we'll never see anything beyond Slayers 8 in English (unless the Print on Demand release of 7 & 8 do reallyreally well).
I want more slayers novels. :(

*stares at her copies of the Japanese novels*
I can hold them up for you. One page at a time. I'll even allow you to breathe on them. ;) *runs*

"She wanted to surpass her sister in something and magic was the only way she could do that"
Or at least match her sisters power as an equal:)
Pictures of Luna, as a weitress & riding a dragon, do show up in the series and in the opening of TRY.
I have the 6 novels that Tokyo Pop put out. I hope they do more. I would also like to see the Slayers Special novals with Naga and Lina. This would give a true flavor of their strange relationship.
Here is a good source for Slayers info. QP Diana Was a long-time member of the Kanzaka fan club. Here is her site for more of her Slayers insights.

If you like, please check out Slayers Serious, my Slayers site. Slayersfan is also the most active Slayers site and board on the web at this time. I am sure there are some other sites that would catch your interest:)

Well they are releasing 7 & 8 as 'website exclusives' so that's something. I picked up 1-4 during the last studio sale at TRSI (had 5 and 6 ordered too but TP cancelled on me /sigh).
