Hmm, assuming that the kid is a brat and doesn't have some serious issue causing his behavioural problems (I noticed several comments at that article crying "ADHD"), good for her, one less kid being a brat. Too many people here let their kids run wild without taking responsibility for their actions these days. This may not have been the best way to issue punishment, but at the very least it should have scared the crap out of him and it's better than nothing. And it should definetly teach him a thing or two about what happens to people who steal....

I don't know. I think she went a bit far. Hasn't anyone ever heard of just returning the toy to the store and giving the kid nothing for Christmas?

The kid's mother and/or grandmother or whoever should've been arrested for getting him a GBA and not a DS.

I can't judge too harshly cause i don't have kids of my own yet. However I work in a Home Depot and I see way too many children grossly misbehaving all the time. All I can think about when I see the stuff I see at work is: "If I did that when I was their age I would have been punished for it." It really makes me wonder what kind of generation is being raised right now. Such a huge lack of disipline that I'm seeing and this whole attitude of "It's not your fault you stuck a fork in a plug and got electrocuted. Sue the maker of the fork. It's their fault...somehow"

I just can't help but to think that that is kind of a harsh punishment for an early opening, but to each their own, I guess.

Sure the DS can play GBA, but maybe the kid would like to play some GBC and GB. Yeah I know in the long run getting both a GBA and a DS gives you a wider range of options.

As for the story in question. To be honest I think my main problem is involving the police in such a matter. The police should be reserved for actual emergencies. The parent(s) should rely on themselves for punishment and yes the kid should be punished in some form.

At first, upon reading this, my initial thought was "Whoah, crazy parent." Then after reading further and seeing what the child had done BEFOREHAND, it seemed more understandable. Fine, mother, harsh punishment. Albeit, calling the police IS kind of extreme, but if you're at the end of your rope, fine.

Really, it's the police who are crazy for even going along with any of this. I mean, you'd think they'd hear this mother on the phone, pause, than laugh hysterically. In normal life, this is not something you call in the police for.

Reminds me of a sound clip I heard that consisted of a woman calling 911 to complain that a fast food place wasn't giving her her burger the way she wanted it... pretty funny stuff.

Oh wow. That reminds me of all those stories of people sueing fast food restaurants because "their food made me obese." People will do the craziest things, eh?

Well in an expanded version (http://www.breitbart.com/news/na/cp_K120511AU.xml.html) of the article it said that the great grandmother had put it on layaway and paid on the thing for months so you're talking $80 versus $130, they might not be in the best financial situation.

He also has some problems with the law (he swung at a police officer) so it looks like the mom is using this as a sort of wake up call to change his path in life.

My parents used to bring us outside and spank us if we misbehaved. Now a days the parent will get arrested for disciplining their child. :tired:

While on one hand it seems "extreme" and perhaps a waste of valuable law enforcement resources, I'd rather she do something now about the kid than wait until he does something truly horrid.

It would be a perfect irony if his mother got him Barbie's Horse Adventure for the GBA

Exactly. There are people in the world for whom a misbehaving child is less a problem than a parent who tries to correct their misbehaving child by a good spanking. It would be nice if we live in an age when matters like this could be taken care of within the family and not involve outside agencies, lest of all the police department. But considering the way things are, maybe calling the cops on the kid was the smart thing to do.

And yes, if I had done something like that when I was younger, I would have been spanked too. Seeing all the wild kids that come through work, I wonder if their parents remember that too.

I found this article yesterday actually on CNN.com. Printed it out and posted it up on my whiteboard at work. I decided there wasn't enough humor in the office right now so Jecca-neko's Stick Figure Cartoons and Crazy Article o' the Week is featured on the whiteboard hanging by my cubicle. Everyone who walks anywhere near my desk sees this. Already I've gotten some chuckles from both. Cartoon is a work related joke so you guys wouldn't get it.

I think it'd be even more poetic to turn around and sell the GBA on EBay like that guy did with three DS's last year.
