Hi all...

I am working on determining exact terms for some of my series box descriptions for my records, and need some help. Now I know chipboard... but some of the boxes in my collection are those old crappy paper boxes that came with Noir and RahXephon, ultra thin paper that come with some hentai sets... plus any I must be forgetting aside from the brick collections. Please help and let me know... This is one area I'd like to know more about... :)

There's digipacks, which are the ones where they mount a clear plastic tray onto a cardboard backing. Usually very aesthetically pleasing, but not as durable or repairable as other types. Often come with slipcovers. Also, there's the digipack books variant that are comming out now where the digipack trays are hinged and connect to the spine of the book. Cardcaptor Sakura TV, Kyo Kara Maoh vol _ + artbox, R.O.D TV, and I think X TV use some variant of this. I believe some of the cheap Bandai sets have been similar to this as well, but not as nice as the Geneon sets.

There's two kinds of bricks I think. I think the one they use for Kenshin economy sets, Magic Knights Rayearth economy set 1 and such are called Alpha bricks.

Some series have tins.

Many Funimation boxes are funky. I don't know what they tend to be called though, other than that the Negima one could be called a chest.

Unfortunately, there used to be a thread from long ago that listed the various box types for many releases, but I am unable to find it (it may be too old for the search system to find it).

The paper boxes you're talking about, which ADV used to use quite often, and which are very common with CPM's last/latest release and MB economy sets (when no bricks), were, I think, called "flip tops." If the person who used to keep the box list is still around, maybe they can come in here and give a list of all the box types. Chipboards, flip tops, tins, digipaks, and bricks are the main types of "box sets" that are in use.

The Alfred Haber site (http://www.alfredhaber.com/animeBox/) offers some basic definitions of box types. It also has a data base for released boxes, though it's not been updated recently.

Let's see if this (http://forums.animeondvd.com/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=region1&Number=923611&fpart=&PHPSESSID=) works. I had it in my favorite threads. Unfortunately many of the links seem to be for pictures that no longer exist.

Hey! That's the thread! The link works. I tried every which way, but the search function seems to not let you search for items older than one year, even with that, it did not seem to want to make any posts from this old thread appear.

Thanks for digging this out. I've made a copy of the opening post myself into a text file, since it's a useful little guide, and who knows how long the old forums will exist.

So, retributionzero, that thread from the old forums Touma has the link too is very useful for answering your question.

Oh yeah... Exactly what I was hoping for. So one of these nights I can adjust my records for my anime collection. It's just useful to have this info around and gain more insight to my collection...

Hi all...

Noir actually had a chipboard box, very sturdy.

You may be confusing it with Najica Blitz Tactics, which was thin cardboard. That made up for it with the art, though.

Edit: and if you still only have that old Rahxephon box, get yourself to rightstuf.com and order the Rahxephon movie box, which is beautiful chipboard, has a thick extras booklet, and holds the entire original series as well as the movie.

And, IIRC, it's only $13 or so.

Yeah I need to check out the Noir box again, but yes I did grab the RahXephon movie box which is far prettier and sturdier than that crap box the series started with. It's one of display series right next to Samurai Deeper Kyo wood box and Trinity Blood all enclosed box, with Berserk's Box of War not too far away. :-) Most of the rest of my series stay shelved in lockable cabinets unless I want to show them off. Or I'm in progress of getting the rest volumes which are facing open to show me the empty spaces. This serves as a reminder to get more...lol
