View Full Version : Link's newest adventure: Twilight Princess Discussion Thread(HEAVY SPOILERS, BEWARE)
Since this just came out, and not everyone has the chance to marathon it, I'll put in a rule or two. Please use spoiler tags and remember that other players might not be at the same parts or points as you. Also, since this will show up when looking at the boards, use a generic topic subject to avoid spoiling. Other then that, feel free to discuss anything related to the game.
So with all the talk about this in the general "what are you playing thread", I thought "hey, why not make a post about it". I managed to pick my copy up at a Toys R' Us on release day, and I've been playing it nonstop ever since. Around 44 hours in, I beat the game this morning.
My overall impressions of the game after completion are(remember, these are impressions after finishing the game) pretty good actually. The dungeons were pretty good, but I was suffering from dungeon fatigue when I ended up getting shot into the sky to get the last mirror piece. The dungeons were laid out nicely, if frustrating at times. I did enjoy most of the boss fights though. My favorite probably had to be Zant. I just like going through all of the levels again and he was pretty fun to finally fight.
As for the story, for me it was a mixed bag. The core story about Midna, Link, Zelda, Zant, and Ganon was pretty good. Midna came off as a suspicious creature, and her motives wern't known sometimes. I kept expecting her to be Ganon in the end though. As for Zant, I found it funny that he came off as a whiny Twili who had a lust for power. Ganon seemed tacked on to a point. I did like the cut scene that showed how Ganon basically killed one of the sages when they tried to imprison him, but you really didn't get the feeling that he was around for the whole game. I know that he basically gave Zant his power, but I'm unclear if he was acting as him(ala taking control of him). I was disappointed again when I didn't get to see anything happen between Ilia and Link, even though they built it up for the whole game.
I did enjoy the ending to some extent as Ganon was gone. I was surprised at how "human like" Midna was when she was finally able to reveal herself heh. She wasn't to bad looking either. So she was the one that was able to destroy the mirror(as she tells you a couple times during the game). It was a touching moment when you can tell that she has deep feelings for Link but she knows that it's for the greater good if she breaks the mirror. The ending cinematic were kind of lack luster to me as it really didn't do much. But I guess it sets you up for the next one.
As for misc things, I really enjoyed Malo. He(or she?) is a little kid, but god was that a great character. From the dialog when you first meet the kids to when he opens up his shop and the shop in Castle Town. The one thing that I'd have to say that I liked the most about this game was the designs. Agitha's Castle was nice, so was the Star Game and other places. The enviroments were busy and it felt like a lived in world. Oh, and one more thing, I FARKING HATE HOWLING STONES, ugh.
Well, those are my initial impressions. I'm sure this is a game that I'll be playing for months to come.
I have a question for those of you who have beaten the game though. Did you just geat a "The End" screen showing the fountain in Castle Town then get pushed back to the title screen? I know that it was like this in OOT where you could go up and beat Ganon again, and again, and again. I know that the conclusion of the story would make it pretty damn hard to keep playing. But I guess it's bugging me that I missed a chance to save(I saved before I went in) or that it somehow didn't count that I beat Ganon.

Game has been out for quite awhile. When I beat the game, I just got "the end" with the fountain, only I couldn't go anywhere from there other than reseting the console. Then again I played the Wii version, so the GC one might be different.
Yeah the howling stones were a pain to look for, but you learn some cool attacks from it, like the mortal slash or whatever...that one where you draw your sword right when the enemy attacks you.
Favorite boss would be the dragon from the Sky temple. I was WOWed by the use of the clawshot useage there. Zant comes close.
Oh, did anyone else find Zelda/Ganon's puppet to have one of the most predictable strategies ever?
As I said in the "What are you playing" thread thread *copies and pastes*, Overall if I were to give it a ten point score, I'd say it's less than a 10, but more than an 8.8. I found it better than Wind Waker (which is still enjoyable), but I liked the N64 Zelda titles more (even Majora's Mask).
Out of all the Zelda games, the worst one IMO is Zelda II: Link's Adventure for the NES. I don't care if it's "Old Skool" which seems to be an excuse for making old games "cool" from most gamers. And let's not get the cd-i titles involved.
And if there's one thing I hate about the Zelda francise, it's anything releated to water. :P

Took me a while to figure out how to fight the boss after Zelda (bottom of the screen should say hold A not push A!) but Ganon vs Link on horse is fantastic.
What's wrong with howling stones? You got no rhythm or something? :p
Really need tougher enemies though. The hardest fight is just those 3 knights at the bottom of that fairy cave. And that's only because there are 3 of them.

I was confused by that too. And yes, the two after that were kickass! Didn't do the Great fairy sidequest though. After awhile I decided to skip the sidequests and just focus on the main game. :P
I do agree with the enemies. I died twice due to my own stupidity, the enemies weren't that hard. The boss that I did enjoy was the boss at the Arbiter's Grounds. I guess the feeling of going up the spiral tower with the spinner, jumping back and forth was great. I would of loved it if you had to make it to the top, then pop up and there would be this giant head thing growling at you. But still, it gave me a rush.
I have the damn Malo mart(is that a spoiler) theme in my head now

Yeah, stupidity definitely. On the first time up Death Mountain, I kept on getting killed by the Goron who kept knocking you off the cliff because I didn't realize I had to leave and go get the Iron Boots.
On the issue of coolest boss: having watched my brother play through the entire game, my favorite boss that I have seen is the Stallord at the Arbiter's Grounds. Lego's right - the part where you spiral up the tower to get up to the head just gets your blood pumping. Also, the middle two parts of the Ganondorf fight. Unfortunately, the final sword fight still can't live up to the one in Wind Waker. That one was godly.
As for favorite bosses that I myself have fought in my current run of the game so far: Morpheel in the Water Temple. This is sort of a "the other two were a little dull, so this guy wins by default" thing, but I did like where you had to swim/hookshoot onto him and slash him while latched on. Reminded me of that Colossus game for PS2. But without the actual difficulty. :)

I guess you'll love the dragon boss then ;)
The dragon boss was pretty nice to. Whats up with the size difference between the Yeti's in Snowpeak? And man, why do you have to push me down and take my pumpkin, then my cheese you big yeti.

Well if it doesn't do that then ... NO SOUP FOR YOU!
Heh, I kept coming back and scooping up soup as it was a nice little heart refiller. I liked the Snowpeak Mansion. It broke up the dungeon fatigue later in the game. Actually, there was something heartwarming about the two yetis. The big yeti wasn't a monster, he just wanted to take care of his wife

As much as I hate water boards, that one was awesome. It was so satisfying to hookshot onto him, grab his eyelid (I guess it could be called that), and keep jamming my sword into his eye. So sweet.
Sadly, that's as far as I've been able to get. I'm off tomorrow, though, so I'll be spending some good time in Hyrule.
I was a little confused at first on how to latch onto him while swimming heh. But it was satisfying to hookshot in, and just stab him a couple times. I've spent about 55 hours in game, with about 20 to 22 of those coming after completion. I bet if I went back, I could probably finish it in under 30.

I just completed the game after about 42 hours of game play. I haven't played a Zelda game since the NES days. I never did own the SNES (Parents force my younger brother and I to choose Sega or SNES and my brother won out) nor an N64 (Brother had an N64 but never did get either Zelda. I had a PSOne). Spin attack was very useful in the 3D world, but I miss the old shooting sword at full health. I have to say the skeleton boss was my favorite. It was just a lot of fun doing the sand surfing on the spinner to attack him. I didn't find the howling stones to be annoying because I stumbled across all of them.
The 3 major annoyances for me in the game were: 1) The hidden cave in Hyrule Lake. I kept falling near the end with the bats knocking me into the pits. I just got frustrated when I would get sent back to the very beginning. 2) The plant boss. I kept firing the boomerang/bomb combination at the main head, but it would never eat it. I kept trying different angles until I got one that felt was somewhat working. 3) I found the horse riding/fighting sequences to be hard. It just wasn't comfortable doing all of those actions just to get one hit on an enemy.
It was good to see Ganon hasn't lost his pig quality in his beast form over the years. Boss battle were great. The majority felt like mini games than all out button mashing or controller swinging in the Wii's case. I felt "wow" when I finally got to the Hyrule fields and just seeing the size of the place. Most players probably don't care about that since it was done first in Ocarina of Time. I think I'll finally pop in Windwakers. I've had it for over 2 years, but I mainly played Mario Kart/Smash Brothers Melee on GC. It was nice investing more time into a game that my usual 10-15 hour platformers I've been playing for a while.

Well there is a spoiler warning for this topic, so I see no reason to use tags.
Anyway, I beat it the other day, and it was an awesome game. Just awesome. There are some things I missed that I will have to go back and find (like the magic armor), but the game was very enjoyable. I thought the final battle with Ganon was really cool, especially the sword fight with Ganon in his human form.
The biggest complaints I have about this game are the fishing stuff, the lack of all out voice acting, and the Sky Temple. I don't know why, but that temple seemed very piss poorly made. The puzzles were so freaking impossible I found myself at Gamefaqs for half of the dungeon.
My favorite boss battle in the game though is with the Twilight Fossil. That was wicked fun. Zelda is my second favorite game of the year, and now I want to play some other Zelda games.
I had to look at IGN's guide for the Sky Temple, and even parts of Snowpeak. The Sky Temple was a interesting feat as it really wasn't that big. The thing that I liked about the Sky Temple was that you got the feeling that you were actually in the air. The final boss at the end almost gave me vertigo when I had to clawshot up, and up, and up then swing around heh.
Fishing was ok as it was put in mainly as a diversion like it was in OOT. You just wade around in your little boat and fish for a while. I wish there was a reward for catching a certain ammount of fish, but I guess different lures are that reward. As for voice acting, it's a heated debate. I don't know how many times I could handle a VA saying different things as I had a lot of text repeated to know what to do. But I do think that the next Zelda game needs to at least have partial voice acting, more sidequests and mini games, and just more to do.
My only two major complaints are that sure Hyrule field is nice(I love randomly riding around), but there is almost nothing on it. It serves basically as a giant hub to connect you to where you're going. I would of liked maybe a little village somewhere, or some type of interaction. Also, money. You get so much money in TP, that you have nothing to spend it on. I mean I know they probably did that for the magic armor, but half the time I just went in as normal, because I would only loose a half a heart.
The game is well done, and some of the little touches are nice. Malo is my new favorite side character, and the Yeti's are great. Now if you excuse me, I have to see a Yeti about some cheese..

I only had to look up one hint for the Sky Temple, and that was getting past the first room. Once you get out of the pool, I couldn't determine how to cross the gap in the first room. After reading a guide, it was having to use the stupid man/chicken things to fly across. I should have determined that myself when I kept trying to throw them into the gap out of frustration.

BTW, does anyone know how the hell to get across the broken crevice to the inside of the fort where the broken bridge is? I cannot get over there for crap, but there is a ladder in the fort, so there must be a way in there.

How the heck can you donate 1000 rupess when you can't even carry more than 300? That would be annoying, getting 300, donate them, go find 300 more, donate those, repeat... ugh.

Umm...you have to give Agatha all twenty-four Golden bugs to get the wallet that lets you carry 1000 rupess. But yes, that is an alternative. :P
EDIT: You don't spend too many rupees in this game, and finding them isn't a problem. especially in dungeons.
I would donate 600, come back, and donate the rest in two trips. I made sure to have some bugs on me(after receiving the first wallet upgrade from Agitha), and would go get some cash from her. You have loads of unused money though, but I guess thats what the Magical Armor is for.

Speaking of all the money, I really like how if you open a chest and there's money inside, and your wallet is full, you put the money back.

On one hand I like that you don't waste money, but on the other hand if you're looking for a piece of heart in a chest or something it's irritating to keep opening the same chests because your forget.
That said, this game had a lot of great parts, pretty much every part of the snow area was awesome. I also liked the wild west style shootout in the hidden village, the last guy I shot spun around and fell out a window making it extra dramatic.
Snowpeak was great. The Yeti's were great, and Yeta was adorable. I loved the music when you walk into Snowpeak from Zoara's Domain. It has this creepy atmosphere to it. As for the Hidden Village, I loved walking in as link and getting the "old west" theme heh.

I finished it, and would say that it makes my top 3 favorite Zelda games. I still think the SNES LttP was my favorite followed by OoT. Twilight Princess was great, but like others have pointed out, it was a little easy.
I've gotten almost everything. The one thing that bugs me tho is that I couldn't figure out how to get the two chests out on the south entrance of the castle city, the one on top of the small tower and the one in the middle of the pool. Any hints?

I couldn't figure out how to get those at first, either.
Spoiler for Chest Getting: Y'know that the tower is connected to another one by an outcropping, right? Well, on the one to the left when facing the castle, there should be a clawshot circle. It's the tower that doesn't have the chest on it. Once there, you should be able to get the two chests one at a time. I'll say this: you need the Spinner for the one in the pool, and Wolf Link for the one on the other small tower.
Yeah, that place bugged the hell out of my until I picked up on the ropes and clawshot target on the towers

Finally got them. I had already known how to get on top of the tower without the chest, but for some stupid reason, I never saw the ledge under the clawshot target. As for the other chest, I also had tried before to grab on to the ledge and move to the other tower, but I don't know why it didn't work before. The camera was getting in the way I guess. Anyways, thanks for the help.
Interesting.
I just opened those two chests right before logging in here. I can't believe I missed those for so long- I'm right about to start the Twilight temple.
Of course, I discovered it at night and was stumped until it turned day and I finally noticed the Spinner rails.
Well, I was messing around in game today and decided to check out some of the locations and listen to some of the music. Am I the only one to notice that this game has a huge wild west feel to it? Granted not everything is like that, but there are areas that make me wonder. The Hidden Village is one, especially with the music, the look, and what happens when you first enter. The same can be said for Kakariko and the shaman. He kept reminding me of a Native American.
Maybe it's just me reading to much into it heh. It's probably due to me riding around randomly in game. I tend to go to the area where the Boblins seem to come out of no where at you heh. It's fun taking things out on horseback.
