2007 Moe Invitational Tournament - Nomination Stage

It's time to start naming which characters will be a part of the 2007 Moe Invitational Tournament. The brackets will be divided into three groups (instead of six like last year). The three groups are 'N. America (R1)', 'Japan/SE Asia (R2/JP) & (R3/SE Asia)', and 'Europe/Australia (R2/Europe) & (R4/AUS)'.

Nominate characters that meet the following criteria:

1. The home video release (DVD, HD-DVD, Blu-ray) of any volume of the series the character is a part of must be between Jan 1, 2006 to Dec 31, 2006.
Saimoe has the benefit of using the original airdate as the qualifier. We don't. So we're using the street date for the DVD, HD-DVD, or Blu-Ray instead.

2. The home video release must be the first run for the series for any type of home video format in any of the following regions: R1, R2/JP, R2/Europe, R3, and R4.
In other words, re-releases like thinpacks and "Essential Collections" don't count.

3. The character must be female.

I think I'll only be following the R2 bracket (cautiously, and with much detachment, after last year), as that's far more interesting, and it's much easier to say "this is for 2006 characters" when they first appeared in 2006... not "2003/4/5 and then licensed and then ::waiting:: and then released".

Though for the R2 bracket, there's no reason why we can't nominate based on air dates.

Limiting things to DVD release dates makes sense to me, but with the R2 market in there it still makes for a pretty open field.

Yeah, I don't think the DVD only rule makes any sense for Japan. The very reason I like Saimoe so much is that it goes by air date (and, well, gets so many votes, which is nice) and so focuses on current characters, allowing fresh blood to compete each time.

And not including Ayu or Nayuki and the rest is just criminal.

Whatever it takes =D It would be a crime to exclude Kanon.

Still, I'd have to think about who my #1 favorite was in terms of "moe" in 2006. Haruhi was my favorite character, and gives me moe feelings in many ways, but hmmm... could there be someone that's almost as good overall, but more purely from a moe standpoint? Probably.

I think I'll let others do the nominating, and just hope things turn out as well as the Saimoe tourney did overall.

It's a double-edged sword either way. If one were to go by air date then that would allow in series that have eliminated. Yet at the same time it would eliminate other series that were able to make it in because of DVD dates. For example while a change to air date would allow the nomination of the Kanon girls, it would also make it so the girls Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha As are out of the running. Since it ended in 2005. Then you'd have the matter of shows that started in 2005, but ran into 2006. Especially if the show started on the 31st of December. Not that I know of any example like that.

Regardless, I think I'm sitting this tourney out. Moe is just too... subtle? confusing? whatever... a concept this kind of thing. Saimoe did (in my opinion, of course) a pretty damn good job of it when all is said and done with the bracket winners they had, but here it's just too confused. So, luck to the aod tourney and all, I guess, but... meh.

Moe is a feeling, not a character type or genre. It is different things to different people. It often complements but is not necessarily synonymous with cute.

One way to look at it is if your heart goes out to a character, and you want to protect or care for them and keep them safe, then that character is moe for you. There are no age or gender requirements for a character to be moe.

We had a thread (in the Recommendations forum, I think) about this, but I can't seem to find it.

This might be a good thing.
If both versions of Nodoka were eligible they might come up against each other and split the vote. This way one will have a chance this year and the other next year.

I agree with that move, since when it comes to the Negima girls, the more likely thing is to have the person who nominated the Negima girl to choose whether she should compete in the R1 side or the R2 side (given how Negima has both R1 and R2 releases this year, but the characters are still the same).
