I recently got my twin brother for Christmas the XBOX 360 game "F.E.A.R." and its a great game however the only problem with it (and its a huge one) is that we both get motion sickness, headaches, and nausea from playing the game. It really puts a damper on how great the gift was :(
Its happened to me and him before and that was Red Faction II. Does this happen to anyone else here and what is the game that caused it?

I've never had motion sickness playing a game but a PS1 game called Die Hard Trilogy always made my eyes water when I played it. I've never had any problems playing any other games, including FPSs.

I've never really had that problem.
My problem lies with blur effects, which range from annoying, to "hurts my eyes badly enough I can't play this game".
Rainbow Six Vegas nailed that last bit.
I get motion sickness when I read in the car heh. As for games, I don't get motion sickness, but when I'm at a high place and near an edge, I get that automatic "push back" feeling if you will. Like if you were physically up on the cliff yourself. I did get a headache from playing F-Zero X(think thats the title) for the Cube though.
I had a friend who got motion sickness from playing The Next Tetris on the PS1. She couldn't handle the wobbling tetrads. I could play that game for hours; it was like LSD without the whole 'illegal' aspect.

Wow, and here I thought the stories about people getting motion sickness from the early FPSs like Wolfenstein and Doom were just myths. Needless to say I have never suffered it nor have I heard first-hand of anyone else until now.
By the way, if motion sickness is when you feel the motion but cannot see it, shouldn't this be called "inverted motion sickness" or something? Or is there already a specific term for it?

How long do you play these games before feeling sick? For as long as I can remember, the saftey booklets that come with games and systems have always warned to take a break every hour or so, especially if one's feeling eye strain, nausiated, etc. I think the booklets also say to stop immediatly if the game is affecting you like that....
I've never really gotten any motion sickness from a game, but occasionally I've gotten a bit of eye strain if I've played too long. Usually I feel tired of playing after an hour or two anyways though, so I normally don't marathon-play as it is.

I get motion sick pretty easily, but I don't think it's ever happened while I was playing a game. It has happened when I've tried to watch other people play a first-person view game, though. Katamari was actually pretty bad for that - I couldn't watch for more than a few minutes, but I could play it myself for hours. I think it has something to do with being able to anticipate the way the camera and the view are going to move.

It's never happened to me and it's the first I've heard of it happening.

Yes, and I can hardly play FPS games anymore as a result. I do have Fear on the PC though, and what helps for me is to turn off headbobbing (whoever decided to have that turned on as standard in FPS games needs to be shot, in the gut, repeatedly). If I can control the motion in the game I can keep going longer without problems. I do still need to take breaks and get some air at times, but it's every hour or so instead of after the first 5 minutes.

I feel bad for people with motion sickness. I know my brother has it pretty bad, my dad has it mildly, but I've never been affected by it. It sucks, though, as there's so many fun things you miss out on experiencing.

i suffer from motion sickness very badly, put me on a boat and plane and i will spend 95% of the trip in the bathroom throwing up :(
that said, i do get motion sick while gaming but mildly so i ignore it. i kno i should stop but games are too fun. yesterday, i played 4 hrs of Rainbow Six Vegas and had to lie down for over an hr until my nausea dissipated
it was worth it :>

Actually I don't get motion sickness from being on planes or boats - it's just FPS games. I can't explain it really.

I get nausea often when I play various FPS games. It's terrible. Fortunately, I am not overly into those games. I am pretty much the same as Skywise in that I do not get motion sickness from anything else.

I only get motion sickness when playing a handheld in a moving vehicle (car, plane, etc). But the same applies to reading books too, so it's not because of video games. It's the whole nothing is moving then looking up and seeing stuff moving disorientation that gets me.

I used to feel a bit nausious when playing Duke Nukem 3D (I think it was), and the original Quake due to the "head bob" effect.
I haven't felt it for years playing games though, so I guess either I've got over it, the games have changed how they do head bob etc, or it was related to the hardware (low refresh/frame rates or something?)

I've never had that problem, but a know a couple of friends that do. One of them, always has to take motion sickness pills, when playing racing games.

as strange as it may be for a FPS gamer, I admit, I did experience a bit of nausea playing DN3-D and Quake the first time. Though for some reason, no game other than the first Turok, made me sick in the first few seconds. Still, I can play UT2k4 with no symptoms of nausea for as long as I can before my eyes start burning. I think you just have to accustom yourself to the way the game looks and plays, even if the game is running smoothly.

I suffer from it too. 2 hours of FPS is more than enough before I feel really sick. If the room was cold then I might last a bit longer. It wasn't a major thing when I was younger when I would do all-nighters with Quake or Counter-Strike. Strange how things change as you grow older.

I didn't use to have problems playing deathmatch quake for hours either. I'm thinking that it's something that's changed with the games, not something that changes in us.

But if you took a 15 minute break every hour like the booklets say then you wouldn't have to feel sick for a solid hour. :P

I used to never have the problem. But, after putting down first person shooters for a few years, then trying to go back and play some fairly recent ones, I get it with those.
First one I had this problem with was Halflife 2. I don't know what the problem is. But, usually after about 30 minutes, I start feeling pretty sick. Never did get around to finishing it.

I also assume that as well, but I might have been only thinking it was due to age of some sorts. Call me crazy, but I think it's that we aren't too used to the graphical nature of these modern FPS. Too much information is what I'm bound to say.

FPS games aren't a problem for me, but the first two Grand Theft Auto games did me in. The "top down" perspective on my 36" TV would give me outragous headaches. Now the 3d Vice City version I can play all day.

I generally don't feel anything wrong when playing games; the last time I got a nauseous feeling was playing the demo to Bubsy 3D...but somehow, I don't think that was because of motion sickness... :P

Actually this used to happen to me terribly when I played any of the Spyro games on the PS1. Other games like these used to bother me a little bit too, but it seems to have chilled out some over the years with the newer games. Once in awhile I still notice some dizziness if I play for awhile, but I don't play those kinds of games very often, so...
Oh, but I do have to say, I am totally reliant on "watching" the mini-map as I run around in FFXII, because if I don't, I don't feel grounded and get dizzy depending on certain camera angles (which change so frequently thanks to the fighting style). :nervous:

Yup FPS and sometimes TPS get to me and make it hard to play. Of course this really was tough when I played Perfect Dark Zero. I couldn't stop because it was work testing it and so I went through 3 days of hell almost throwing up several times. Slowly I got use to it and was able to go on. Still games like GRAW and especially Prey (which I will never go near again if I have to) will still make me dizzy and nausea, lucky for me Gears doesn't and a few others seem to be okay. Not sure what exactly does it.

You're going to have a great time of it in the Pharos — if you make the wrong choices, that is.
I wonder if all this motion-sickness has to do with the ever-increasing monitor sizes. When your eyes send you messages that everything's moving, but your inner ear thinks everything's stable, the rest of your body gets confused. I think one reason I've never had this issue is that I don't have a monitor big enough to fill my field of vision. Well, that and I watch TV and play games at a safe distance in a well-lit room (except when it's Parasite Eve, which really needs to be played in the dark).

I do not get motion sickness, and I play a lot FPS games on PC. I do have a co-worker who will not touch them because of his motion sickness.

Though I haven't played since the SNES era, all the FPS games make me motion-sick (for example Nuke- Dukem or Quake)
I can barely stand for 15 mins before i begin to feel really bad, with nausea and seeing everything in blur.
That's why I always preferred to play RPG's and soccer games.

Heh. "Give up the thing you use the least." I'm not stupid; I didn't chose the mini-map. :neko: I actually finished that whole area tonight .. all I've got left to do is upgrade whatever I can with my measly 100k gil and go face down Vayne^3. ^__^

I have no problems with motion sickness while playing games, but my mother has an awful time. Especially with FPS. Even when she's the one controlling it, it just makes her dizzy. She enjoys platform and racing games. Those don't make her dizzy.
I think the only one that's come close is NFS: Most Wanted. The sun reflecting off the road at 200mph kinda disorients you. ;)

I gave up items. Who even uses items in that game?

The only game to ever give me motion sickness was Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. First time I played it, I must have had it going for 4-5 hours. For the next week or so, I felt so damn nausious I thought I was going to die.
My own damn fault, right? So I thought...when the XBox version came out, I thought I'd try that out. That time, I played it for 2 hours, took a break, then played for another hour. Next morning, same results...thankfully they only lasted for about a day and a half.

I don't get motion sickness but I do need to see an optomotrist for some glasses because if I sit near (not with my face straight up to the screen) I get headaches and my eyes just start to get teary and I squint. I have to set further away from the screen.

The only game I've ever almost gotten motion sickness from is Extreme-G. Sheesh. O.O
My mom doesn't fair so well. She's so bad at handling racing motion on video games that she can feel sick watching a fast bout in Mario Kart. :D
