So I was just checking up on some of my stuff at AmJ when this discount-pricing jumped at me:

http://www.amazon.co.jp/%E8%B6%85%E6%99%82%E7%A9%BA%E8%A6%81%E5%A1%9E%E3%8 3%9E%E3%82%AF%E3%83%AD%E3%82%B9-%EF%BD%9E%E6%84%9B%E3%83%BB%E3%81%8A%E3%81%BC%E3%8 1%88%E3%81%A6%E3%81%84%E3%81%BE%E3%81%99%E3%81%8B% EF%BD%9E-%E3%82%B9%E3%82%BF%E3%82%B8%E3%82%AA%E3%81%AC%E3%8 1%88/dp/B00005EDM2/sr=8-3/qid=1168153261/ref=sr_1_3/503-3126266-9614359?ie=UTF8&s=dvd

I'd never seen DYRL-dvd discounted as much since prolly when the re-release/repackaging came out late in '99 or early 2000, so this discounting at AmJ was kinda surprising. Even back then, I think 10% off was the most discount for it.

Maybe it's just wishful thinking or something, but could it be that Bandai-Visual's currently remastering it for another release? Remastering classic R2-titles seems to be in vogue right now.

Most likely wishful thinking, but it would be cool. Though the only real complaint I have is the weird telecine they did. Outside of that and a bit of dust in the transfer at times, it's still a pretty darn good looking DVD especially for being one of BV's earliest DVD titles.

They've been remastering classic titles for 5 or more years now. It's not some new trend.

How does the current DVD quality compare with DYRL's CAV LD quality?

Perhaps a BD release is coming! :virgin:

It's better than the LD by far. The only real problem with the transfer is with the weird telecine.

BV is thankfully in the HD DVD camp. So I can pretty much assure you no BD release is coming.

Since when? I've gotten the impression that BV is format neutral, and they haven't released anything in HD yet either.

HD DVD ! how sad :( sorry but to me BD is the true next generation media format...well at least until now.

I'm really wondering where Black Jack is getting his info about BV being in the HD-DVD camp and not in the BD-camp. :sigh: :sd:

To be fair, BV just now at CES announced they'd released 40 anime titles/discs on HD-DVD in 2007. However, since they've earlier proved to be format neutral I'm not taking that as a sign that they've chosen sides. They could easily do releases on both formats, and with Blu-ray being much stronger in Japan than HD-DVD it makes sense to do so. Until we have more information like which formats they're releasing on and release dates, I take it as nothing more than showing their support for HD in general. BV has a hard time ahead of them if they're going to convince Japanese otaku to pony up for a HD-DVD player.

According to yesterday's press release at the CES, Bandai Visual is in the HD-DVD camp. The Innocence BD was released by Disney, I believe, which supports Blu-Ray.

I thought it was already known that they were in the HD-DVD camp (in addition to Blu-Ray it seems). I'm 100% there was some press release about BV/HD-DVD a while ago and I know I've seen posters/banners of Stand Alone Complex with the HD-DVD logo on.

I agree with SkyWise in saying BV is format-neutral.

It gets down to which anime-owner wants their titles in which hd-format.

In DYRL's case, BigWest (and prolly Victor Ent, as well) is the ultimate authority to decide which format a probable DYRL hd-release will be using. BV will just get paid to do it coz they can do it in either or both formats.

The main movie is great... although as mentioned, the telecining is very strange. Lots of blends and whatnot that can give some players trouble.

The end credits, with the concert footage, are in my opinion terrible on the DVD... whereas with the LD release it looks just as good as the main movie.

The problem with the concert ending footage on the Mac DVD is that the main film is remastered whereas the ending (edited parts from Flashback 2012) are not.

I didn't know Bandai Visual owns the film in Japan. I wonder if they'll make the grab for the R1 version.

So the Flashback 2012 DVD is not re-mastered? Or is it, but a LD master was used instead?

No, the Flash Back DVD was not remastered. It looks virtually the same as the LD to me.

It's too bad they didn't include the original end credits for the movie as an alternate angle or something.

I could be wrong, but I remember the old, old LD ending has a long credit scroll without animation. I heard that the rerelease on LD had some recap scenes from the movie, and the final LD release I know was also the edited Flashback footage.

Of course, if I were rereleasing the movie, I'd play the first half of Flashback's Angel's Paint, then fade to black, and then go into the second half which shows the characters years later departing on the Megaroad. What never made sense to me about tacking the Flashback footage on the Mac movie was removing all of the second half's footage, which was the important followup. After all, Flashback was originally going to be the ending to the Mac movie but had to be scrapped because the film was behind production.

Of course, I'd also provide the original ending to satisfying the fans. ^_^
