Yep, I bought a PS3 today. Staff is now allowed to buy the new systems, and we had one unit that comes with Talledega Nights left, so I figured what the hell. I got it with the Best Buy credit card offer with no interest for 6 months, which will give me enough time to pay it off thanks to tax returns and my birthday in June. Didn't get any games for it, as we are sold out of teh ones I would buy (which is really only Resistance until DMC4 comes out), but I now have a complete video game system collection again. On the other hand, I did pick up X-Men 3, Kingdom of Heaven, Fantastic Four, and Ice Age 2 (my g/f said the only way she would approve of me getting it is if I bought her Ice Age) for it. Now I just need to get it out of the box, set it up and download teh firmware updates. I did get the 2 year replacement plan though, should anything go wrong.
However, please forgive me, as I could not resist.
I say congratulations. Once you have some rockin' games, that'll probably work out for you just nicely. (Now that I have a worthy TV, I can say that I'll join you when FF13 drops.)

Hmm...that's right, the PS3 is expensive enough for you to do the 6 months thing with the BB card....hmmmmmmmmm.....and VF5 is just around the corner too......
Buy a Sharp LC-46D92U and load up on Blu-Ray movies and I'll forgive you........ and probably ask you to invite me over for the weekend...... and possibly steal all of it while you're sleeping. :P

This is the second time I've seen someone post something like this (a confessional about buying a PS3). I'd like to get one myself...if only I weren't broke and they weren't so expensive!
But...uh...congratulations on your purchase and enjoy! :D

Yes, and it will also be available on the 360 a couple months later. ;)

I haven't decided what game I want. I do want DMC4 and Heavenly Sword though, but those aren't out right now. Plus I'll need to get a headset when I have money, so it is going to be a while before I can play anything but demos. Right now though, the PS3 is being used a BR player. <can't wait to get Resident Evil Apocalypse on BR next week>

Grats on the PS3. Get Resistance. It really is a pretty sweet console FPS. Only thing I don't like about Resistance is the difficulty level. It has been, at least so far for me, pretty easy, but a hell of alot of fun at least.

Do it Zanza you know you want to. And when you do you should pick up Lair.

Congrats. I hope you find some great games to play on it. :)
I'm not bothering right now as it would essentially be a dust-collecting brick until later this year at a minimum.

I feel the same way. There aren't enough games out for me to make it worth the price at the moment. I might purchase one next year.

I downloaded the demo, and I'm honestly not impressed. As for difficulty, if you consider that easy, then I want to know what you consider hard. HOLY ****!!!
I think I can wait until Heavenly Sword comes out to get a PS3 game. Right now I have tons of other games (when the hell is Bulletwitch for 360 coming out???) that I'm playing, so the PS3 is being right now as just a BR player.

Well is the demo the first level of the game? The first level is hard cause your little life bars don't regen Halo-sheild-style yet, and there is no health pick-ups in the game yet. Which gets explained after the first part of the game is completed.
As for not liking it, well, that's too bad, but as I recall I didn't care for it when I was playing through the first level either, assuming that's the part you played. As I was just pissed off wondering where the fuck all the health packs were. After I got farther I found it to be addicting, and still find it to be very much so.
So maybe you should try renting it or something if you can, and try getting alittle deeper into it. As I think it does many things just right, and personally would highly recommend this game to any FPS fan.

Don't know, but these levels had health packs and 4-5 different guns. The first level had you in a city and after killing the grunt dudes, you had to fight a spider-like robot that was only vulnerable from behind. The second stage they had on there had a few monsters with a torch, and looked like a mining facility or something. The sniper rifle was pretty sweet in that one though.
However, I just don't feel it is worth $51 (that is what the game costs with my employee discount), especially since money is tight right now.
Congrats. I hope you find some great games to play on it. :)

Ditto. The upcoming Ratchet and Clank PS3 game might get me to buy a PS3 sooner but I think even that's due mid 2007. Hopefully Nippon Ichi will be getting their groove on with the PS3 by that time too.

I have a question to those of you with a PS3 (US and Japanese), aside from not being able to play PS1 or PS2 games, what are the downsides to having a Japanese PS3?
Currently, I have the chance of picking up a 60GB PS3 for around $500 US and since that option is on the table, I'm considering it. However, I want to know the consequences of picking up the Japanese unit over the American unit.

Your purchase will erode the ozone layer and increase the build-up of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. You'll be single-handedly responsible for the extinction of the polar bear. Live with your guilt! :D Just playing.
The Playstation website says that "You cannot access or purchase products from PLAYSTATION®Store of regions or countries other than that for which you have registered a PLAYSTATION®Network account." Could mean that you can only get Japanese PS1 games for the PSP, which is sort of a bummer because you can't put your own CDs in to play with Vib-Ribbon (owing to the fact they won't fit in a PSP). Sony'll probably find a way to bite you in the ass somehow. Still, if all you're interested in is PS3 games and BDs, there's probably no problem.

I have a Japanese PS3 there really isn't much difference. I registered it to a US address so I can only access the US PS store. I've heard that certain games will censor certain scenes depending on what PS3 you own. And also if you bought a JP PS3 you can played online with only JP players. So far I've only play with only NBA 2k7 online and can play with US players so I'm not to sure about that one.

Ya, also I think johnny said somewhere that you have to have a JP credit card to use the JP Playstaion Store at all. Which sucks, but I've heard there are ways to get access to other regions PS Stores. As I've heard some people have figured out how to access the Asia stores from NA PS3 to d/l Tekken 5: DR.

Not much really. I'm in Europe with a Japanese PS3 so I'll try and respond/expand on to what people have asked/said:
Obviously, Blu-Ray disks won't be an issue as the US and Japan share the same region code.
For playing games online, some games (Resistance in my experience is the only one) seem to only allow you to play on the Japanese servers against other Japanese. Although I play Ridge Racer 7 online too and I'm playing against people from all over the world so it seems to be going on a game by game basis.
If you have your PS3 language set to English, all menus will appear like that and some games (Resistance, RR7 etc) will be fully playable with 100% English language.
Some are saying that playing Resistance on a Japanese console censors the game, but I remember seeing blood and stuff and others have reported the same so I'm not 100% sure on that. This could be an issue in the future though as games such as Dead Rising and Gears of War were censored for their Japanese release, but buying a US disk would most likely rectify the problem.
As far as signing up for the Japanese PS Store goes, it's hard to navigate through the menus when you try to register plus you'll have to have a Japanese credit card so it's not worth the bother. What you should do though, is set one up without adding CC details so that you can download some of the free stuff that's available now and in the future.
To get access to the Japanese PSone games (or most of them anyway), you'll be wanting to set up a Hong Kong Account. Registration is 100% in English and all you need to do is grab an HK address (use an online business, hotel etc) and you can input your credit card and buy things. Couple of things worth pointing out - I have a Mastercard CC and have no problems adding money and buying stuff but some people are saying that it won't allow them to add different cards etc so you'll have to see if your card is valid. Also, if you go to buy something you'll have to add money in HK$40 amounts at a time as it doesn't seem to like adding the maximum HK£125 or lower all in one go for some reason.
When you get into the HK Store, it's all in English and is laid out nicely when you go to browse PSone games. It's recently be split into US and Japanese versions and currently some of the US games are on there (doesn't really matter though as you can just d/l them from the US Store) and about 80% of the Japanese ones (some stuff like the L'Arc en Ciel Tomarunner special which is on the JP Store isn't here, presumably as it was a Japanese exclusive, but pretty much everything else is).
To give you an idea, like I said, I'm in Europe with a Japanese PS3 and have been able to buy PSone games/Tekken DR from the US and HK Store and download movies and demos from the Japanese Store so if I can do all this in a region where the PS3 isn't even out, you will be fine in the US.
Hopefully that will help you out. Any other questions just ask. This is a great time to take the plunge and buy a PS3 too as there release schedule is starting to heat up over the next couple of months.
Considering the improving availability I don't know why you'd have to resort to picking up a Japanese model now. There were 3 of them sitting behild the normal game case in my local Walmart when I was there picking up lunches for work the other day.

I'd say it's only heating up a little bit though. Only games coming in the near future that I want are Heavenly Sword and Virtua Fighter, and, if I recall correctly, didn't you say Xbox 360 is getting a better version of Virtua Fighter? So I may hold off on that one if that's true.
I have another question. Did Lair always have a May release date or was it pushed back? Cause I thought it was coming sooner than that, but that's what EB and IGN have up on their sites.

Well for me there's VF5 and Fatal Inertia in February and Gundam Musou, Heavenly Sword and Virtua Tennis 3 in March.
As for the 360 VF5, it's to be based on an updated version of the arcade game, but this could be downloaded and applied to the PS3 version. Remember that the Lindburgh system the arcade game runs on is easier to port to/closer in power to the PS3 and not 360 too, meaning the game was more or less designed for the PS3.

Yeah, it's a little weird. It's down as being out soon but according to the developers is only around 30% complete. Obviously someone isn't being honest and if I was a betting man I'd go with a Q3 release, but I'd love to see it earlier.

I'll be asking questions here if they arise. At this point, if I buy it, it will be in a few days and it depends on how my funds go. Tokyo is one damn expensive city.

Even with international shipping, you can get a Japanese 60GB PS3 for cheaper than a US 60GB version depending on where you look.

And then you run the risk of having problems with some games, and that Sony might get more serious about enforcing region stuff. I'd rather pay more to get a PS3 that I know will work with all my games.
Also I bet it's a pain in the ass to use your warranty for anything if you're in the wrong region.

As a person who mainly did import gaming for about 7 years (Saturn and Dreamcast), I always either purchase both a US and JP system or made sure the system could switch regions.
If I were going to buy a JP system for the PS3, then I would probably wait until a price drop and buy a US version as well later on.

Sinner! To the pits of hell with thee for thy transgressions!.......
....is what I might have said a few years ago. But after my brother bought a PS2, I gained more respect for the Sony systems. I'm still a Nintendo follower at heart, though. Anyway, enjoy your new system!
Now, if you had bought an XBOX 360........then I'd have had some choice words for you. :)

Yeah, this was the reason (aside from impatience) that I bought both a US and Japanese Wii. Sure, the freeloader will turn up eventually but there is always the chance, especially in this age of firmware etc updates, that Nintendo could "force" an update to the Wii to counter this. I'm sure a way around that would surface eventually but it's easier with two separate consoles.
In the future I hope that I don't have to buy a US PS3 to go alongside my JP one (mainly for space issues) but if a slim version rears its head in a few years then I might find it hard to resist.

I picked up Marvel Ultimate Alliance and a controller so my girlfriend and I could play together. I hoep it is as good as everyone says it is. I can't wait to play as both Ghost Rider and Silver Surfer. Last, I forgot to get a headset though, so I still can't play online yet.
