View Full Version : Fund Your Anime

I was just thinking... "if I had a billion dollars and wanted to spend it on funding an anime production of my choosing, what would I choose?" I immediately recalled the great unsolved mystery (and crime!) that there is no Jojos' Bizzare Adventures TV series, so I'd fund a 700 episode long series, even if nobody watched it. ^_^
I'm curious, what would you fund?

I've actually had this fantasy myself, and it usually involves giving lots of money to Yasuomi (Kite, Mezzo Forte) Umetsu. I think he's one of the true genius auteurs of anime, with a unique style and sensibility that strongly appeals to me, and it's a shame his output is so limited. He's apparently been trying to get a feature called Kiss and Cry made for several years. I'd fund that, or pretty much whatever else he wanted to do.

If you happen to run out of money, I'll fund more Umetsu work in your place, a kite TV series would be nice but it would have to be "real" and adult, not the toned down fantasy that crept into Mezzo DSA.
I'd also front the funds for more Kino's Journey and more Bubblegum Crisis (2041 :) ) and a new Princess Nine TV series - for that I would even provide the story outline.
Oh and a Yukikaze TV series and an Alien 9 TV series.
clearly I'm running into the billions of yen by this point. :sd:

With that kind of money the first thing on my list is funding the rest of Berserk to completion in anime form, but with a little more integrity from the manga (ie, secondary cast and twists) Then funding Hellsing Ultimate to ensure the entire Manga was adapted... If anything was left after that... I'd invest in Media Blasters, TRSI and some of the smaller entities of Region 1 to ensure there viability and long term health.
I'd also ask Caitlin Glass to marry me... forget my current wife... trade her in for in-store credit!

With ease, I'd fund the continuation of Fruits Basket up to the very end of the story, and then fund for my novel to be animated (because I'm greedy like that), and the rest of the money would go in the bank after I've comfortably moved to Japan.

I always did have a sneaking suspicion that TRSI was involved in human trafficking... in retrospect, it's obvious.

A billion's a lot to spend.
First, R1 licenses for AIR and Kanon. That would be easy.
Then, I'd like to hire JC Staff to do a Yotsuba& anime (for some continuity in animation with AzuDai).
I would save the rest (which would be a huge pile) and retire.
I'd fund the resurrection and expansion of Cool Devices.
… What?

A billion dollars, huh...
Well, there's the easy stuff, lots of sequels. Rozen Maiden 3, Narutaru 2, a real third Banner of the Stars (no 3 ep bullshit), etcetera. Nanoha is already getting a third so they don't need me there, and Haruhi is guaranteed a second, so again not needed. Might not even be needed for Rozen, but it's still unsure. Natutaru is definitely dead in the water though, so a second would need a financial miracle (like me getting $1bn USD, for example). A third Banner TV series probably isn't far fetched but I'm not expecting it any time soon.
Still, I'd keep a sizable amount of the money aside as a bribe, in the unlikely event that anyone in Japan should really be crazy enough to decide someone other than KyoAni should do Haruhi season 2. I would bribe, cheat, murder and steal as far as my money would take me to correct that.
Honestly I could go on forever and spend far more than a hypothetical billion on all the things I want, so I'll just stop there. In reality I'd probably just give every penny to KyoAni and trust them to do whatever they feel is right with it, because I think they know what I want even better than I do.
Planetes season two
Thats pretty much it for me, but I wouldn't mind seeing more Full Metal Panic since it looks like the story is ending soon. I'm scared of messing with someone(remakes) since you don't really want to ruin anything heh.

Evangelion ending, to my taste. Get the original Gainax creators back, & an army of shrinks if neccessary to help/support.
Original Gunbuster OVA sequel.
Tenchi Muyo OVA series 4 - the sequel to series 2!
Hyper Police series 2
A My-Hime OVA series
Really though, I'd like to license shows already made. Bring back KOR, introduce Touch & other Mitsuru anime - with his manga as well, Galaxy Express 999, Yamato, Lupin series 1, Macross DYRL. And some new shows; Aria, I"s Pure, Macross Zero, Shuffle. Probably gone over the billion $ mark by now though :P

I second an anime based on Yotsubato animated by J.C. STAFF.
Other anime I would like to start would be based on Nintendo francises. I like to start a 24-52 episode anime based on Super Mario Bros., Legend of Zelda, Densetsu no Stafi, The Famicom Detective Club, and a Fire Emblem anime that doesn't get cancelled in production or whatever reason they ended the OVA. One series would focus on 6&7 and a series reset would focus on 9&10. Sadly, I don't know much on the first five, but I suppose it wouldn't hurt to do one based on Marth & Sigurd's worlds.
Other anime I would like to try would be a decent Real Bout High School anime that focuses on the manga and NOT done animated by GONZO. I'd also like to see more of Twelve Kingdoms focusing on what kind of kingdom Youko builds.
Other sequel anime I'd invest in is pretty much underway already. Haruhi, Nanoha, Ichigo Mashimaro. Well Okay, there is Shana, My-HiME and Full Metal Panic! I would like to see more of. :P

I would make Tokyo Crazy Paradise an anime! Well Skip Beat too, but it doesn't have enough storyline to go to 26 volumes nor anything near a conclusion.
Also would make more initial D anime, 12 Kingdoms(even if she's not done), more Whistle, animate Vampire Knight... am I out of money already?

An easy choice for me would be the continuation of the Beck anime series. There's a lot of manga material left to be animated.
After that I'd make a Bleach spinoff series with Kenpachi and Yachiru as the main characters. It'd mostly be comedy. Yachiru finding even more amusing ways to tease Ikaku about his bald head. Kenpachi trying to finally connect with his zanpakutou, with other 11th Division members standing around wondering why he's alone in a room talking to a sword. And of course the 2 of them trying desperately to get from point A to point B. This series would be 12 episodes, and there'd be 2 DVD exclusives which would involve Kenpachi releasing his zanpakutou and then having a rematch with Ichigo.

Ooh...
First off, I'd want a good Xenosaga series, with uber-l33t animation, encompassing the story & sub-plots of all three games plus everything they had to cut out in order to fit it into merely three games.
Then I'd throw trucks full of cash at Kunihiko Ikuhara and beg him to start directing anything--anything!--his heart desires.
I'd pay inventors to come up with some new form of technology by which to read Yoshihiro Togashi's mind mind and determine, in detail & up until the story's end, his future plans for Hunter x Hunter. Then I'd have it all animated. None of this weird OVA nonsense--a well-paced, quality TV series.
I crave seeing Parfait Tic in (super-awesome) anime form.
Sequels, a couple of which have been mentioned by others: Big O III, Rozen Maiden 3rd series, Kino's Journey II, more Kaleido Star and, above all else, more Mushishi.
ETA: Oh, and a gorgeously animated show with loads of yuri and BL, a strong plot to hold it all together, and a generally astonishing lack of suckiness. Haha.

I'd fund a Yotsuba&! anime, an Azumanga Daioh:10 Year Reunion OVA, and a Planetes second series.
Then I'd bribe ADV Manga to finish Yotsuba&!.

There would be a lot of things on my mind with that probably, but first things first.
1) More Magic User's Club!
2) Good uncut dubs for Cardcaptor Sakura and Magical Project S!
Everything else is secondary to that. :)

Oh, and I would throw in my backing in this Umetsu Financial Group.
Would also like to get some hardcore hentai/Gore stuff like Tokyo Red Hood by Tamaoki Benkyo and Uziga Waita's Death Panda. Of course more Demon Warrior Koji. And wild comedy hentai like Sei So Tsui Dan Sha by Shiwasu no Okina with its witchcraft, bulling, fruta, and a transfrerable weenie or Nene Pretty Cat! by Naruko Hanaharu with its frisky cat girl storyline.
I would make sure they had complete backing to properly do the show start to finish with all the sex, violents, and taboos intact. I don't know as of right now most hentai seems a little too shallow and not making more progess like they were a few years back. Of course it could just be me getting old.

I think instead of creating new stuff I would probably spend a lot of it on doing superior restoration and remastering work on some of the older titles that need it, and make the subsequent DVDs available subtitled.
Although funding another season or two of Stand Alone Complex would also be likely, maybe also a new Blood series with the designs and style of the movie. And something new for the Patlabor franchise. I'd try to get Oshii, Kamiyama and Itou in there, with Production IG, Sunrise, Madhouse or all three of them doing the animation, and I'd make damn sure they didn't do any labors using 3DCG.

Uncut, bilingual releases for the whole of Ojamajo Doremi, Sailormoon, and Cardcaptor Sakura. They would have all episode previews in their proper place, correct OP/EDs for each episode, and all the extras from the R2 DVDs (plus more R1 extras.) All of the shows would get brand new, accurate dubs.

This is exactly what first leapt to my mind as well. I'd donate my billion to that project! And if there were any money left over I suppose I'd throw a bone to the Xenogears fans and have that animated as well.

Well one thing I'd consider is trying to get licensed series that would take a miracle to get licensed. Akazukin Chacha for some reason is the first thing that comes to mind. Although I still need to finish watching that. Of course I'd get special copies for myself. However in general I'd make sure they'd get decent extras if possible.
There is also the idea of making an anime based on the SaGa series. If I didn't say that, I'd be considered an impostor. Still I'm not sure which game to do first. Romancing SaGa 3 has Tatyana Lasaiev so that's tempting. Especially if they focused on Sara as the lead. Since her version of the final battle would be fun to see animated. Although perhaps an original story based on the ideal of the series would work best. They'd just have to figure out how to handle the whole multiple main character thing effectively.
One other idea is to make a new anime based on Star Ocean the Second Story. Which would actually be a complete story this time. It would make sure the world of anime fans know the awesomeness that is Chisato herself! It would also include an apology from the creators of Star Ocean EX. Who would be forced to admit that they shafted Rena simply because they despised her. Yes I'm still angry about that.

I had that much cash on hand, I'd fund BONES to make an Eureka Seven movie regardless of whatever the ending may be. Its just that ever since Rahxephon and Full Metal Alchemist and I guess Bebop counts as well. It be thrilling to end major series with a feature film. Whether sequel/prequel or just plain random.

Well, hell, if I have a billion to play with, I could use just a fraction to completely redo Berserk in completely faithful adaptation with movie quality animation at 30fps, retaining the unique art style, thereby forgoing all of the oversimplification to which anime adaptations are usually subjected.
Then I'd throw a boatload of cash at Satoshi Kon and let him animate whatever he wants. Then, I'd, um, retire to my island nation? :D
edit: Ah! I'd also buy the rights to Dune and have someone (maybe Production IG?) make an OVA that faithfully adapts the series up until the end of God Emperor.
There is also the idea of making an anime based on the SaGa series.
It would be ~300 episodes long, have seven main characters who cross-pollinate the various threads of what we may laughingly call the "story," have a whole bunch of episodes in which the cast run around trying to figure out what to do and where to go … but if it's done in the watercolor style they used for SaGa Frontier 2, I'll rent it.

You know what I just realized? I basically described Ranma!

I'd first buy the licenses for every series they'v ever gotten from 4Kids, order all their material destroyed in a nuclear fireball, and then record new (FAITHFUL) dubs for them.
Then I'd get Studio Madhouse to do a new GTO series covering all 25 volumes of the manga.
Then I'd get Tohru FUgisawa to do a sequel to Onizuka so we could find out if he and Urumi ever got married, and have Madhouse animate that too.
Other stuff - fund more episodes of the excellent hentai Sex Friend.
Slap Rumiko Takahashi in the face with wads of 100 dollar bills until she wrote a real ending to Ranma 1/2.
Fund another ROD series.
Then I'd get Tohru FUgisawa to do a sequel to Onizuka so we could find out if he and Urumi ever got married, and have Madhouse animate that too.
While you're there, tell them to get cracking on animated Rose Hip Zero and Rose Hip Rose.
Rather than wish for continuations of series (though I'd totally be funding an Onegai Ichigo series for sure!), I'd rather fund a completely original concept with breathtaking animation to match. I'm thinking something along the lines of schoolgirl gladiator matches. The story can justify it later. :P

If I had a billion dollars, I would fund the rest of the Hajime no Ippo getting animated in full oav/movie quality level or art & animation just so that everyone can experience the greatness that is the Takamura vs Hawk fight in full HQ goodness! Episode count wouldn't matter either in this case, if they run out of manga, I'll stop and wait on production until more is made no fillers!

Thanatos asked a hypothetical question:
"if I had a billion dollars and wanted to spend it on funding an anime production of my choosing, what would I choose?"
I'm having difficulty working out where to start. So many possibilities! Let's see...
For a start, fund the anime productions of Naoki Urasawa's 20th Century Boys and when it is sufficiently done, Pluto. Oh.. not to forget, license Monster for R1 release. If we're even going to talk about licensing for R1 release, must not forget funding the licensing of Legend of the Galactic Heroes and all the movies and side stories.
Another manga I would fund for anime production is my current manga obsession, Rainbow. I'm just a big sucker for gritty drama.
MKVarana
01-17-2007, 12:17 PM
Let's see, I'd finish a bunch of incomplete anime, such as Fruits Basket, Ai Yori Aoshi, and Spiral, fund a Love Hina wedding OAV, and fund anime series based on Rockman Classic, Rockman X (loved the OAV on IHX), Breath of Fire (particularly BoF2), Angelic Concert (complete w/ a Yui-sung song in every episode o(^-^)o), and Gyakuten Saiban/Phoenix Wright.

I'd pay off the author of His and Her Circumstances and have Gainax finish it off. I'd also stipulate that they would have to continue doing it the way they did the first season. Man, I so want them to finish it...
I'd also fund more R.O.D. TV cause you just cant have too much Yomiko.
On the R1 side, I'd bring Legend of the Galactic Hero's over. I wouldnt care about cost or anything, I'd just bring the damn show over. Who cares if it makes money, I just wanna get it digitally restored and released.
Since I'm sure there would be cash left over after even all that, I'd also help fund Chris' directorial movie career. Not Anime related, but I've always wanted to see what kind of porn he would make. I'm sure it will involve catgirls and that is all the incentive I need.

I would pay Nintendo to END Pokemon and do so in the way I choose.

I'd probably make an amazingly, over the top, well directed and completely fluidly animated OAV series in 2.35:1 with all kinds of expensive expenses, and it would be the deep, moving saga of a 5 year old clown, stuck in a world where everyone smokes cigars, talks about exhaust pipes, wears frilly miniskirts and is about 40 or so, muscly, and with burly, manly mustaches.
It would be called "ESCAPE FROM CONGO ~thekiss paradice~" and you would love it.

If I had a billion to fund anime...
I would create an Alternate Universe version of EVA. (Where Shinji isn't a real wuss, and is much more badass, something Spike Spencer will be sure to appreciate. :D )
Create a 26-episode continuation of Nadesico, which starts after the end of the current series, but ignores the plot from the Sega Saturn game and the movie, but features more in the way of continuation of the balance between the humor and drama of the show, and more focus on the Akito/Yurika relationship.
Create the anime within Nadesico, Gekigangar III, where it explains all the hubbub explained in Nadesico, plus original plot, in the 39-episode classic, from 2096! Sure to make any old-school otaku happy. :)
Create an ice hockey or lacrosse anime series. If American Football can make a dent on the anime landscape with Eyeshield 21, I don't see how a hockey or lacrosse anime can't make an impact (especially the latter, given the growth of the game internationally.) Don't know about the presence of those sports in Japan, but I could raise their profiles there somewhat. :D

End Pokemon? o.o
Why?
It just keeps going and going and going, and it's the same thing over and over. They should just end it before it falls even deeper. At least for me.
Seeing as the Pokémon franchise is still rather popular in Japan & the RPG versions of the games still sell relatively well here, I don't see it ending anytime soon.
And as a Pokémon fan myself, it would be one of the things I would fund, to further improve the storylines, animation, & scripts.
I'd also fund remakes of Shuffle!, with each series moreso based on the other girls, each with their own endings.
Finally, I'd fund the creation of an anime adaptation of Dragon Head, & perhaps The Drifting Classroom as well. :D :P

I'll second that Jojo TV idea.
For starters, I'd hurl money at Sunrise to do a series after Gaogaigar Final, unless this "Project Z" stuff isn't just a few sketches to pad out a DVD release.
While I'm talking Brave stuff, I want them to actually make the Saint of Braves Baan Gaan. They were going to, but the money went for GGG Final, and the creative crew was given another show to do instead. GEAR Fighter Dendoh came out of that, and carried over a lot of the same themes.
(Yes, I'm playing Brave Saga 1 & 2)
..and just for kicks, Super Robot Wars Alpha: The Animation.

I immediately recalled the great unsolved mystery (and crime!) that there is no Jojos' Bizzare Adventures TV series, so I'd fund a 700 episode long series, even if nobody watched it. ^_^
I'm curious, what would you fund?
I'd fund animated OVA versions of some of the classics of Japanese literature. It has always surprised me that so few of the classics are animated, in anything more than criminally truncated versions. Examples:
A full Tale of Genji
A more complete version of The Hakkenden, Takizawa's other works like Crescent Moon and Young Gentlemen of These Times (an ultraviolent bloodbath, by all accounts).
Shimazaki Toson's Before the Dawn
Yoshikawa's Taiko and Musashi
Any number of the works of Mori Ogai, possibly the greatest modern Japanese writer.
With that amount of money, I'd immediately fund a continuation series for Hajime no Ippo. Of course, I'd also fund a second season for Berserk, despite how the anime erased Puck entirely. And I can't forget poor Rurouni Kenshin and it's lack of a Revenge Arc.
The leftovers will go to a third season of Gantz. :>

If I had the money, I would probably fund for animating the rest of the Fruits Basket manga, the Kare Kano manga, and the Ai Yori Aoshi manga. I really want to see the proper conclusion for those in animated form. I would also, of course, get more of the Full Metal Panic novels animated as well. Oh, and I always wanted to see "Alice 19th" animated because when I was reading that, I felt that it made good material for a TV series. Lastly, I'll probably fund for a OAV series of Full Metal Alchemist to pick up where the movie left off because I didn't really like how that ended.

New entry. I would spend a ton of money making an anime comedy about the lives of Divi-chan and Dee-kun. ^^
For refernce I drew this a couple years back >>

So when I first answered I wasn't really thinking because I forgot the one thing I want most... more than anything... more than funding a Yotsubato anime or pretty much any anime sequel.
A Touhou anime. A 52 ep minimum orgy of pure win, with unfathomably beautiful game-inspired battles animated to the absolute height of perfection, and a complex and deep storyline personally overseen by ZUN and integrated into the Gensokyo universe. It would redefine our concept of epic.
...also, lots of hot hot Marisa/Alice yuri. Actually, lots of yuri in general, since Gensokyo is almost entirely populated by females.
I'd pour all one billion dollars into it, except for a couple mil to fund translation and licensing and all that for R1.
I really need a Touhou anime so damn badly.

Please enlighten me, preferably with linkage as to what this "Touhou" you speak of is. o.o

You would need SO much less than a billion dollars to do everything you said there. That's the cruel, criminal thing about this medium that we love--it's so cheap compared to doing the same thing in live action, that it makes it even more sad when great projects are spoiled through penny pinching and grinding on the part of the Capitalist Overlords (tm) who pay for this stuff.
When the first GITS PC game came out, it had some little sequences of really great animation done in an "authentic" Shirow style. Production IG had really gone to the wall on those sequences, to give something back to the manga fans who put up with the characters looking so different in the first GITS movie. Someone on staff told me that when Production IG showed the demo to their financial backers, one of the suits asked how much money it would cost to make a whole theatrical film with that quality of animation. The IG people suggested that considering they would have to buy a lot of new equipment and train staff, it might cost the equivalent of 20 million dollars. The executives burst out laughing--what fool could imagine paying the outrageous sum of 20 million dollars to make a full feature film? The idea was dropped instantly.
Needless to say, Hollywood considers 20 million a bargain for even a tiny independent film, shot on location with no-name actors. I say it's astonishing how the Japanese waste their opportunity to do great things with this medium, simply because of the short-sightedness of the financial backers.

In its purest form, it's a schmup/bullet hell (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bullet_hell) top-down shooter that's been running in numerous incarnations since 1996 (including a fighting game, Immaterial and Missing Power).
Link to Touhou Project (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Touhou) at Wikipedia.
Link to the dedicated Touhou Wiki (http://www.pooshlmer.com/touhouwiki/index.php/Touhou_Wiki).
They'll give a lot more info on the actual mechanics of the games, which I'm content to just watch videos of rather than try to play (though I'd kill for IaMP) for myself. I watched a full run of Perfect Cherry Blossom last night, and it was pretty cool.
Going far beyond being a mere shooter though (and this is where I get interested), Touhou is really distinguished by its (fairly enormous :sd: ) universe of fan works depicting all the characters and events of the magical realm of Gensokyo. Some things, such as Alice's affections for Marisa, started as fan/doujin creations and were later sort of made canon in official artbooks and comic collections and such.
Touhou is a great example of why I love imageboards and fanartists and all such things that are part of an internet-based anime fandom, because even if they generate a lot of crap ::cough/b/cough::, they add a whole layer to a show's fandom that's far more often good than bad. It looks like the Touhou Project guys realized this long ago, and they've made an effort to put some kind of personality behind the dozens of characters that have populated the game universes. Even one-off mid-stage bosses have taken on a life of their own in the official and fan generated works (particularly poor Hong Meiling). Also, I love all the character's costumes, at least in more recent artwork where the designs are much more refined than the very amateurish designs of the early games. Reimu is <3
Also, Touhou has more images on Danbooru than any other single game/show/manga/etc, although it trades places back and forth occasionally with Haruhi.
I'm not sure what the market would be for such an anime, and I know there wouldn't be one over here (at least not before people started watching it and seeing if it was any good), but that's what the billion dollars is for... I'l hand them a check and say MAKE IT WORK SOMEHOW!

Haha, of course, but that was just me making the exaggerated point of "MAKE IT COMPLETELY AWESOME AT ANY COST" even if it would be pretty much impossible for them to spend a billion dollars.
